00:00Nuclear Magnetic Resonance, NMR, can be considered as one of the greatest inventions of modern medicine.

00:06It can quickly obtain high-precision three-dimensional images of the inside of the body

00:11without causing any harm to the human body.

00:14The essence of the NMR instrument is a huge, superconducting magnet.

00:19Its magnetic field strength can reach 30,000 Gauss,

00:22which is 30,000 times the Earth's magnetic field.

00:26Therefore, it cannot carry any magnetic metal,

00:28otherwise it will be directly sucked in.

00:31So how does it obtain an image of the inside of the human body?

00:3560% of our human body is made up of water.

00:39One water molecule contains two hydrogen atoms.

00:43Each hydrogen atom is a small magnetic field.

00:47They are always spinning chaotically in the body.

00:50When the body enters the magnetic field of NMR,

00:53the magnetic field of the hydrogen atoms in the body will change

00:56and resonate with the magnetic field of NMR.

00:59When a pulse is applied, they will absorb energy and change direction.

01:04When the pulse signal stops,

01:06the hydrogen atom nuclei will release the absorbed energy

01:10and return to their original direction.

01:12These released electrical signals are collected by the receptor outside the body

01:17and then processed by the computer.

01:19They are transformed into images, which is the imaging principle of NMR.

01:23Since the water composition of each tissue in the human body is different,

01:27once degeneration occurs, the water composition here will change.

01:31Through NMR, the deformation position of each tissue can be clearly seen.

01:36The method does not produce artifacts and does not involve ionizing radiation.

01:41The only disadvantage is that it is expensive.

01:44Since the NMR instrument needs to be cooled to minus 261 degrees Celsius,

01:49using liquid nitrogen before it can enter the superconducting state,

01:53it generally cannot be shut down from the time it is installed

01:57and turned on until it is decommissioned.
