00:00Hi, welcome back to my channel, in this video, I will explain the ending of Ayo Capitano,
00:04so let's begin.
00:06Ayo Capitano is a 2023 drama film directed by Matteo Garone.
00:11Ayo Capitano narrates the epic journey of a teenage boy and his cousin as they decide
00:15to leave Dakar in Senegal for the promise of Europe.
00:19Throughout this compelling odyssey, the young man confronts a myriad of challenges, from
00:22the harsh realities of the desert to the harrowing experiences in Libyan detention centers and
00:27the risks of the open sea.
00:29A 16-year-old Senegalese kid is asked to sail a boat full of passengers from Libya to Italy
00:33across the Mediterranean Sea.
00:36The boy, Seydou, is understandably scared and doesn't want to take the responsibility,
00:40especially after what he has had to endure in life so far, here is everything you need
00:43to know about the ending, just to let you know this video will contain spoilers.
00:47For young teenagers like Seydou and Moussa, Europe is like a dreamland.
00:52From music to football, that's the land where all life is.
00:55It's not that these two don't have any love for their homeland, in fact, Seydou is very
00:59close with his mother, but their dreams of going to Europe and living a better life are
01:02too big to be contained.
01:04Among the two of them, Moussa is the excited one who is responsible for planting the bug
01:08of journeying to Europe in Seydou's head.
01:10Seydou is very much into the idea of fleeing home one day, but he does make a futile attempt
01:14to convince his mother.
01:16Before leaving, Seydou and Moussa participate in this ritual to take blessings from their
01:20ancestors.
01:22What happens on the journey?
01:24From the very beginning, it becomes evident that the journey Seydou and Moussa are embarking
01:27on is not going to be an easy one, in fact, it's quite the contrary.
01:31They even get discouraged by this local man named Sisko, who's sort of a planner for the
01:35trip.
01:36That fails to prevent them from boarding the bus to Agadez, Niger.
01:40But before that, they have to cross the Mali border, for which they need to acquire fake
01:44passports.
01:45Seydou and Moussa have no other option but to spend 100 dollars on it, which concerns
01:50Seydou as their savings for the trip are pretty limited.
01:53The fake passport fails to help them cross the border, but some more money does.
01:57Once the border is crossed, the next goal is to somehow reach Tripoli, that is, the
02:01capital city of Libya.
02:03What awaits then in the middle of the terribly cruel Sahara desert are the Libyan rebel groups,
02:07along with the mafias.
02:09Not to mention, there are so many people who would deceive all these poor people who are
02:13trying to get to Europe at any given moment.
02:15Then there are suggestions, like the only way to protect your money is by shoving it
02:19up in the only place where nobody would look.
02:21Seydou and Moussa soon get a car after making a deal where 600 dollars would take them to
02:26Italy after they reach Tripoli.
02:28The car abandons them and several other passengers in the middle of the desert, where they get
02:32hitched with a guide who will take them to Libya on foot.
02:35An elderly woman gives up in the desert, and despite trying his best, Seydou has to leave
02:39her behind.
02:40In a scene that breaks your heart, Seydou imagines holding her hand and wondering why
02:44the woman is literally flying.
02:46But we can all assume what really happened to women in the middle of the desert, without
02:49food or water.
02:51The biggest blow in the journey comes for Seydou when Moussa gets detained and taken
02:54by the Syrian rebels for hiding his money up his you-know-where.
02:58Seydou is also thrown into the prison, along with so many others.
03:02After going through barbaric torture for a few days, Seydou manages to get a job as a
03:05builder, thanks to Martin, an older man whose goal is the same as his, reaching Italy.
03:10Martin takes Seydou under his wing, and thanks to their tireless work as builders, their
03:14employer finally lets them go to Tripoli and even pays for the journey.
03:18Do Seydou and Moussa reunite?
03:20Seydou never stops searching for Moussa, and he even gives up on the chance of safely traveling
03:24to Italy with Martin.
03:26He chooses to stay in Tripoli and scours through the Senegalese camps in order to find Moussa.
03:31To get by, he picks up a contract job.
03:34The first big win in Ayo Capitano comes when Seydou finally manages to find Moussa, although
03:38the latter is in a horrible state, both emotionally and physically.
03:42Moussa has managed to escape, but he couldn't avoid getting shot in the leg.
03:46As a result, he's in danger of losing his leg, and the only way out is to go to the
03:50hospital.
03:51Sadly, Libyan hospitals don't admit black people, so the only solution is somehow getting
03:56to Italy.
03:57Moussa wants to get back to Senegal, as he has given up on life, but after surviving
04:01everything life has thrown at him, Seydou is determined to not give up.
04:05But the proposition he gets is nothing short of ludicrous.
04:08Since he can't pay the money for two, he has to sail the boat to Italy.
04:12What makes things worse, neither does he have any experience with riding a boat nor does
04:16he know how to swim.
04:17Does Seydou manage to get Moussa and everyone else to safety?
04:21The only reason Seydou tries to refuse the job of de facto captain of the boat is because
04:25he doesn't want to kill someone by accidentally drowning the boat.
04:28But he is in no position to make a choice like that considering the situation he's in.
04:33So he does take hold of the boat's helm, with the hope of somehow making it to Sicily, Italy.
04:38And the journey on the water is as hard as it gets to be.
04:41There are women and children, even a pregnant woman, a considerable number of seasick people,
04:45and a bunch of people who are actually hiding inside the engine room.
04:48In the middle of all the chaos, Seydou tries to sail the boat and help the pregnant woman.
04:53Seeing her bleed, he stops the boat and tries to call for help, but that doesn't work out.
04:58Seeing no other choices, Seydou promises everyone that he will get them to Italy.
05:02The most significant part is Seydou telling everyone that no one is going to die.
05:06And then, after tirelessly sailing the boat for days with his injured cousin right beside
05:10him, Seydou spots land.
05:12This was Italy for certain, unlike last time, when he mistook an oil rig for land.
05:17He took the journey in order to find a better life for himself and Moussa, but ends up saving
05:21so many people by taking them to the land of dreams.
05:24We don't know if Moussa will eventually survive, or how life would be for Seydou in Italy,
05:28or whether or not he will see Martin again.
05:31But for now, Seydou, screaming in joy, wearing the same worn-out FC Barcelona jersey he has
05:35been wearing throughout the film.
05:37Seydou, the boat captain, is a champion.
05:40That's where Ayo Capitano is choosing to leave us.
05:43That's all for now folks.
