Mother charged with murder of 10-year-old daughter on the Gold Coast

Police have charged a mother with the murder of her 10-year-old daughter on the Gold Coast. Emergency services were called to a property at Emerald Lakes yesterday, where the child was found unresponsive and declared dead at the scene.

00:00A 46-year-old woman has been charged with the murder of her 10-year-old daughter after

00:09Sophie Wang was found dead at her Gold Coast home.

00:13Police say Sophie's father found Sophie and called triple zero emergency services, then

00:21got to the scene at around 6pm and found Sophie unresponsive.

00:26She was then pronounced dead.

00:29Police have told us that this was one of the most horrific scenes they've ever attended

00:35to.

00:37The scene was incredibly confronting and our attending members both QPS and paramedics

00:43will be receiving the necessary support.

00:46In my 15-year career as a detective it's one of the most confronting scenes I've seen.

00:52We understand that this is going to cause distress amongst the community but can I please

00:58remind the community that there is no one outstanding and there is no ongoing community

01:03safety concern at this time.

01:06At about 10.25pm Yingying Zhu was located nearby and police arrested her just this morning.

01:17She was charged with murder and she's faced the Southport Magistrates Court today.

01:24And what happened in court today Julia?

01:27Ros, Yingying Zhu didn't appear personally in court but her matter was briefly mentioned

01:34and she'll reappear in November.

01:36And this would be a huge shock to the local community.

01:40It's been described as tragic Ros, Sophie was a student at nearby Emanuel College in

01:47Carrara.

01:48They put out a statement today saying that they've been devastated by the tragic passing

01:55of one of their beloved students and they're providing support to staff, students and families.

02:02In a past newsletter, a school newsletter, Sophie was described as an avid reader.

02:08She got awards for all her reading skills so it's just a really tragic time.
