Bruce Bochy talks Mahle's debut, moving Adolis down in the lineup & more

Rangers manager Bruce Bochy joined the K&C Masterpiece to discuss the debut of pitcher Tyler Mahle last night, the continued struggles of this team's offense and why he moved Adolis Garcia down in the lineup.

00:21Does this one today feel more important than another one of 162 or am I putting too much

00:27focus on today's game?

00:29No, I don't think you're putting too much focus, but that's the way it's going to be

00:37from this point on every game.

00:39You know, that was a tough one last night.

00:44You know, when you get pretty good pitching there, we just couldn't get much going offensively

00:49till at the end.

00:50Yeah, it's, you know, this is a big game.

00:54We've got a series against the Yankees, we get a win there, you know, we get ground to

01:00make up.

01:01So, and I talked about this, it's not going to work until we start taking series, so it's

01:08going to work.

01:09And, you know, I just love the way we're fighting, but, you know, you'd like to get these bats

01:15going throughout the lineup, you know, put some crooked numbers up there on the board

01:21and make it a little bit easier.

01:24So Boats, Tyler Malley made his Rangers debut.

01:27He looked great and kind of, unfortunately, the Astros scored kind of a cheapy off of

01:32him there.

01:33It happens, puts a ball in play and kind of some bloopers fall in, but man, he looked

01:38great the first time out.

01:40Didn't he?

01:41I agree with you.

01:42Good location.

01:43He's got a calmness about him out there.

01:47That's what I love, even with the runners who score in position, good pace.

01:53You know, he elevates the fastball when he wants to.

01:57I thought he located in a way very well and, you know, Slider was really good at times.

02:05So, you know, his first start back, I thought it was really impressive.

02:10You know, the radar gun, it's telling the truth on what the speed is, but the hitter

02:14will tell you different sometimes.

02:16And with Malley throwing 91 to 93-ish yesterday, boy, he was throwing a lot of those fastballs

02:22by guys or guys were late on that.

02:25And I'm just assuming he has a lot of deception on his release that guys maybe have trouble

02:30seeing it out of his hand.

02:32One, how true is that about Malley?

02:34And then maybe going back to the 80s when you were hitting or catching somebody, who

02:39was the most deceptive with their fastball?

02:43Well, Malley, I saw him a few years ago when he was with the Reds and he's got that late

02:54life on his fastball and he does have deception, you know, where he comes from.

02:59So, you know, hitters don't really pick it up.

03:01So as we say, sometimes at 91, 92, it plays harder and just like at 98, sometimes doesn't

03:09play as fast.

03:11I've had hitters tell me when a guy is throwing 98, 99, it just, you know, they see it well

03:16or not.

03:17So I think deception is a big part of pitching and he certainly has that in location, but

03:23he's got that top rail that he can work with and he's very consistent at hitting it.

03:30And that works and he's got confidence.

03:33He's not backing off.

03:34He attacks the strike zone.

03:37You know, any pitch he throws, it's with conviction and I think that's what makes him

03:43so good.

03:44You think he's not going to power his way through them, but he's going to get his strikeouts.

03:49As far as deception with, gosh, guys I caught, man, I had to think hard.

03:57I won't say Deidre Vecchi, you know, he had a fastball that just got up on guys and he

04:05had that effortless delivery that, you know, it's come at you at 94 in that area, but it

04:13just played harder than that and it had sink on it and a lot of hitters had trouble catching

04:18up with it.
