00:00It's no secret weed killers aren't good for us or our environment,
00:03meaning we need alternative solutions for pesky invasive greens.
00:07Enter CLAWS, an AI-powered farming rover that could bring sustainability to a crop field near you.
00:13CLAWS is short for Concentrated Light Autonomous Weeding and Scouting,
00:16and the device can roam around a farm all on its own, identify weeds that don't belong,
00:21and then use a patented concentrated light system to kill them.
00:24Here's CEO James Miller of Earthrover, the company developing the bot, to explain.
00:29Best way of describing it is a schoolboy with a magnifying glass,
00:32so it concentrates the light onto a small focal point on the mirror stem,
00:36the growing point of the weed, and delivers a small pulse of energy,
00:39which is enough to kill the weed.
00:41The robot first identifies the crop, then scans around it for weeds that don't belong.
00:45The whole process takes microseconds, with the rover then moving on to the next crop
00:49in need of protection, all the while taking metrics on general crop health and yield.
00:54But solutions like this one aren't just good for humanity,
00:56they're also great for the farmers who work the fields.
00:59Nobody really wants to go through a field weeding on a really wet, windy, cold day,
01:04so why not give it to a robot?
