00:00An iconic Penang ferry sank early this morning at the Sultan Abdul Halim Terminal in Butterworth.

00:07Currently the Penang Port Commission is working to salvage the ferry while the Fire and Rescue

00:12Department is preventing oil from spilling into the sea.

00:17It is understood that the ferry began to lean to one side before sinking after strong winds

00:21snapped its mooring ropes.

00:24PPC Chairman Yeo Soon Hin also confirmed the incident, saying the Commission was notified

00:30of the sinking at 3.36am, Benama reported.

00:35PPC personnel immediately attached additional mooring lines and oil booms to the ship to

00:40stop an oil slick from forming.

00:43The iconic Penang ferry service ran for 126 years before being discontinued in 2020.

00:49It was replaced by speedboats for passengers and ferries for motorcycles and bicycles.
