Five Centenarians celebrate their 100th birthday together at Adelaide nursing home

A group of five nursing home residents have celebrated their 100th birthday together with family and friends in Adelaide’s north-east. One centenarian said it was important to be ‘as happy as you can’ and laugh rather than hold a grudge. Bolton Clarke Nursing home’s operations director, Richard Wirth, said the individuals has given so much to the community, and the home was ‘lucky’ to have them.

00:05Hundreds, they're amazing.

00:08But at a rare event in Adelaide, five people have jointly celebrated reaching the century milestone,

00:13with families and friends coming together for the momentous occasion.

00:17I can't get over it being so wonderful.

00:20The food's beautiful.

00:23I'm very honoured to be here.

00:27Half a millennium of combined life experience taking centre stage

00:31at the Bolton Clark Aged Care Centre in Walkerville.

00:34It's just an extraordinary event and I think the staff,

00:37they really bond with the residents and the families over a longer period of time

00:41and it really shows the warmth and care and the togetherness of it.

00:45It's very special.

00:47The joint birthday celebrations here at Walkerville today are raging on

00:50with cake, music and even champagne in hands.

00:53More and more Australians are eclipsing the century milestone,

00:56but to have five in the same room is a remarkable achievement.

00:59And their secrets for reaching triple figures?

01:02I think it's possibly the way that I've lived.

01:05I haven't been an out garbler and gone mad here, gone mad there.
