- Hyakkimaru and Dororo: Hyakkimaru, a powerful demon-hunting ronin, and Dororo, a young orphan thief, travel through the war-torn countryside. Hyakkimaru was born without limbs, eyes, ears, a nose, or mouth after his father made a pact with 12 demons to gain power. He was rescued and raised by Dr. Honma, who made him artificial limbs and helped him learn to fight demons. Each time he defeats a demon, he reclaims a piece of his body.
- Mio's Song: Hyakkimaru, who has just regained his hearing, is overwhelmed by the loudness of the world. He finds solace in the song of a young woman, Mio, who takes him and Dororo to the place she lives with a group of orphans she cares for. Mio works as a prostitute at night to support the orphans.
- The Demon: Hyakkimaru and the priest go to fight a demon, but Hyakkimaru's leg is bitten off, and he screams in pain for the first time. The demon is killed, but Hyakkimaru's leg is not recovered.
- Mio's Secret: Dororo discovers Mio's secret when he follows her to her workplace and sees her with three men. Mio is uncomfortable with Hyakkimaru's ability to see souls, thinking her soul may be a disgusting color.
- The Consequences: Hyakkimaru's actions have consequences, and his father, Daigo, is beginning to suspect something is amiss. Hyakkimaru's brother, Tahoumaru, is also suspicious and wants to go to battle. Lady Daigo reminds Daigo of the consequences of his pact with the demons.
