00:00How hungry are the guys to level a serious game of five-a-side?
00:06Yeah, the guys are very eager after, obviously, a defeat.
00:09The guys are ready to go.
00:12What do you feel needs to be different here to Lawson?
00:15How quickly can you turn that around and make those changes?
00:18How easy is that to do after such a convincing victory?
00:22I think it's pretty simple what we've got to do.
00:24We've got to bat better.
00:26Obviously, we've got to find a way.
00:28We had some discussions around different things we can do better as a team.
00:33There are still a bit of positives with the bat.
00:37With the ball, as I said before, 50, 60 runs is too many,
00:40but it was a positive to get 10 wickets.
00:43But with the bat, we've just got to put runs on the board.
00:45It's simple.
00:46To what extent can you look back to January and what happened in Australia
00:49where you lost heavily in the first test and then made history in the second?
00:53I think from a belief point of view,
00:56it shows that we could get it done after a loss,
00:59albeit it's different conditions.
01:01It was a couple of months ago.
01:03But, yes, we could take a bit from that.
01:05But the main thing is just having that belief within yourself.
01:09England have added Mark Wood to their bowling attack.
01:11James Anson passed ways.
01:13He'll bring a bit of extra pace.
01:15What would you expect from him in these conditions?
01:17How do you counteract what he's going to bring?
01:20He will bring, obviously, extra pace.
01:22Obviously, he's got a lot of experience as well,
01:25playing international cricket.
01:27So, yes, I think he will bring a lot to their team,
01:29and we've got to be up for it.
01:31How much is he going to play?
01:34Yes, he's good.
01:35He's good to play?
01:36Yes.
01:40In terms of Mark Wood's entry-base grade,
01:43is that something that your West Indian bats relish?
01:47It's not something you'll be stepping back from
01:49and backing away from a bit more speed at all?
01:52I mean, we look forward to facing every English bowler.
01:54You know, we won't emphasise on one bowler.
01:56So, yes, we've got to do a job against their spinner
01:59and, obviously, their four quicks as well.
02:01Can I ask how important creating a record
02:05in the batsman is to you as a captain?
02:08Yes, I mean, it means a lot.
02:10You know, I've been opening my entire life,
02:12so I know what I have to do,
02:14and it's obviously important to lead this team
02:17and lead the batting.
02:18So, you know, just to build that foundation
02:20is obviously what I'm focusing on,
02:22and obviously that will always put us in a better position,
02:24you know, to score big runs.
02:27Trevor?
02:28Craig said that you have an 11.
02:31Yeah, same 11 as first X.
02:34And what was the thought process for us?
02:36If we were to say that, what did you have to think about?
02:38The pitch looks a good cricket pitch, to be honest.
02:41It would be good for batting.
02:43You know, the bowlers would get a bit of assistance as well.
02:47So, yeah, we think the guys had a long rest.
02:51Obviously, unfortunately, the game finished quite early,
02:53and I would say Shemar is doing well.
02:56So, you know, I mean, we believe 100% in this 11
02:59that played the first X, and, you know,
03:01we're backing them 100%.
03:03Was there any questions of Shemar with the bat?
03:06How did he come through?
03:07Did he get involved yesterday?
03:09Yeah, I mean, from a couple days ago,
03:11he pretty much was good.
03:13It was just a bit of cramp he had, to be honest.
03:15So he's good to go.
03:18Craig, you've come here with quite a young side.
03:21Many of you haven't played a test match in England before.
03:25How difficult is it just to adjust to English conditions
03:28if you've only got sort of one warm-up game?
03:30I appreciate it's difficult with the T20 World Cup
03:33and trying to fit these things in.
03:35I mean, we won't dwell on that too much.
03:37Obviously, it is a young team, and, you know,
03:39playing any test match would always be a challenge
03:42for anyone that's young.
03:44You know, we've been here for a number of weeks now,
03:46and, you know, what is gone is gone.
03:48You know, the first defeat is gone.
03:50You know, the preparation period is gone,
03:52and I think the guys are in a very good spirit.
03:54You know, mentally, it's really important to believe in yourself,
03:58and, you know, the guy's ready to go.
04:01Craig, after the win at Gatwick,
04:03you sort of said that your team was kind of inspired
04:06by one of the Hulk's comments.
04:07He pointed to your muscles.
04:08I wonder if there's anything in the last week
04:10or subsequently after the rules
04:12that has kind of piqued your interest in that way.
04:14Is there any kind of additional motivation
04:16or any comments that's got you back up?
04:19Well, I mean, that's gone as well.
04:22Obviously, that was in Australia.
04:24You know, we have a motivation.
04:25You know, we've got to be better than the first test.
04:29You know, the batsmen obviously got to put runs on the board,
04:32and that's our focus.
04:33I think once we remain disciplined,
04:35session by session, you know, build partnerships,
04:37that will put us in a good position, you know,
04:39in the overall result of the game.
04:41Can I ask?
04:42I mean, obviously England play a lot of test cricket.
04:45They sort of put somewhere between 12 and 15 tests a year,
04:48and they're trying to build under a head coach and a captain,
04:52their kind of philosophy, et cetera.
04:53How is their kind of...
04:55Jealousy is probably the wrong word,
04:57but is their argument slightly obvious
04:59of being able to do that?
05:00Because it must be, I'm guessing it's harder,
05:02tell me otherwise, to sort of instill a philosophy in a team
05:06when you play two test series, there's big gaps between.
05:09Is that a challenge that you face as a captain?
05:11Yeah, it's a challenge.
05:12I mean, we're longing for more test cricket.
05:14I think the more you play it, you know,
05:16and the faster you will learn.
05:18You know, obviously if it's drawn over a long period
05:20and you're playing two tests here, two tests there,
05:22you know, you take longer to learn.
05:24But the guys are learning, you know, that's the positive.
05:27But, yes, we need more test cricket.
05:28It would improve, you know,
05:30everything about the makeup of playing test cricket
05:33because, you know, it's always going to be tough,
05:36you know, playing international cricket,
05:38and, you know, you get good peers, you get bad peers,
05:41and the more often you play,
05:43you pretty much understand it better.
05:45So, I mean, we long to play many more test matches a year.
05:48But obviously we have what we have.
05:50We have a good period now till December, you know,
05:53where we have six more test matches for the year.
05:55So we've got to make use of that, and hopefully, you know,
05:58going forward we can get more because it will benefit the players,
06:01you know, going forward, the more test matches you play,
06:04the more experience you get, and you always learn
06:07because I'm pretty much still learning, you know, after 90 games.
06:10And, yeah, we need more test cricket.
06:15Craig, just one more question.
06:21Is it at the same level what you heard, you know,
06:24strictly about West Indies and West Indies cricket?
06:26Is it at the same level that you already know
06:29based on what is being said about this West Indies team
06:32and West Indies cricket in general from the media?
06:36I don't fully understand. Just repeat again.
06:38The criticism.
06:39Yeah.
06:40I mean, Rodney Hall, what he said about West Indies being disgraced
06:44and all that, are you hearing comments,
06:47whether from the media or generally,
06:49on the same level being disparaging about West Indies cricket?
06:54I mean, we don't listen too much into the media.
06:57But, you know, they always have someone that may be saying this or that.
07:01But that is our focus, to be honest.
07:03You know, we focus on doing the best we can do.
07:05And I think that's very important for this group.
07:08And it's all about attitude, I think.
07:10We've got some young guys, you know, that have a nice attitude.
07:12We've just got to remain, you know, remain true to success,
07:15you know, through tough times.
07:17You know, like the first test, for example,
07:19obviously easy to give in, give up.
07:22But, you know, we've got to keep believing.
07:24We've got to keep digging deep.
07:25But, no, we're not hearing much about, you know.
07:28Sure.
07:29And on that point of more test cricket,
07:31you have been saying that over and over.
07:33Jason, before you, I was going to say that over and over.
07:36Are you hearing anything?
07:38Are you getting any sort of indication, any sort of bias
07:42that tells you that the authorities are really interested
07:45in giving not just to the West Indies
07:47but other teams outside the Big Three more test cricket?
07:51I mean, this period, as I said, we have for the remaining years,
07:55it's quite good.
07:57Going forward, you know, one or two, well, pretty much two years, one year,
08:01it's not a lot of test matches.
08:05So not fully hearing, you know, that there will be, let's say,
08:0812 or 15, I mean, I would have never played that we have so much in a year.
08:13So, I mean, all I can do is keep preaching for it
08:16and keep asking for it because it will benefit us.
08:19I mean, I don't know how hard it is to put on a test series, you know,
08:23for West Indies or whichever team.
08:26But all I can do is keep asking.
08:28I'm very thankful for the matches we have remaining this year, as I said.
08:31And I just hope that, you know, the powers, you know,
08:34that may be that may control the scheduling,
08:37obviously pertaining to White Ball and T20 tournaments around
08:40that we can, you know, fit in, you know,
08:42at least five or six more test matches for us per year.
08:46Adam.
08:47Greg, so the last thing about finding a way,
08:50is there any discussion about whether that is being more proactive,
08:56putting more pressure back on even lower,
08:58so some good partnerships where you absorbed a lot of pressure
09:01and spent time in the middle,
09:03but then it's about trying to get that school board moving
09:06and be more proactive?
09:08I think it's a balance.
09:09I think you said it right in terms of, you know,
09:11a few guys did get in and didn't go on.
09:14It's just important that you go on for longer
09:17because the longer you're back, the easier it becomes.
09:20And it's important to stay in that plan for as long as possible, you know.
09:24Obviously, you want to put away bad balls.
09:26You know, that's what every batsman wants to do.
09:28But it's that hard work that you do for 40 minutes,
09:31being able to take that to an hour and two hours,
09:35and it's a balance.
09:37It's a mixture of putting away the bad balls
09:39because when you put away bad balls, it gives you confidence.
09:41So, you know, as I said, we've just got to keep learning.
09:44You know, I think a lot of learning would have taken place
09:46in the first test.
09:48And you've just got to believe in our ability and do it
09:52and aim to do it for longer periods.
09:55Obviously, you packed on that over your career.
09:58You know, big school's against you.
10:00You've done a lot of conference over here.
10:03Does that add some pressure on you as that, I suppose,
10:06captain and sort of the leader with the bat
10:10to try and, you know, put out the school first?
10:14Not really.
10:15I mean, I enjoy captain.
10:17I enjoy leading.
10:18I've been opening my whole life.
10:20So when I go there to bat, for me,
10:22it's always to see off that new ball, you know,
10:24and be there as long as I can.
10:26And that's always my focus.
10:27So I don't, you know, see it as any added pressure.
10:31Yes, you know, at times you don't get runs,
10:33and, yeah, it could be a little bit tough.
10:35But, you know, just important to stay mentally tough
10:38and keep believing.
10:39But, no, no added pressure.
10:40No added pressure on me.
10:43Okay, well done.
10:44In the room, any questions on Zoom?
10:49Yeah, go on.
10:51Speak up, yeah.
11:19Yeah, I think Morty did a very good job.
11:23He was pretty much wrong three runs in over,
11:25which especially overseas,
11:27you always ask the spinner to be just around that.
11:29And then getting two key wickets in England's team,
11:31that was very well done.
11:34And Jadon was, you know, pretty much,
11:36you know, he's a good guy.
11:37He's a good guy.
11:38He's a good guy.
11:39He's a good guy.
11:40He's a good guy.
11:41He's a good guy.
11:42He's a good guy.
11:43He's a good guy.
11:44He's a good guy.
11:45He's a good guy.
11:46He's a good guy.
11:47He was, you know, pretty much not surprised
11:49by what I saw from him in terms of his discipline,
11:51in terms of his lengths.
11:53But I think we as a group,
11:55we could improve on the boundary balls,
11:57especially square the wicket,
11:59and just a little more discipline.
12:02But, you know, we did a decent job,
12:04and we got to look forward to the second test.
12:08Okay, thank you very much.
