Council facing ‘tough decisions’ to fix £50 million funding gap

With increased financial pressures over the last few years, Cardiff council now have to make up an almost £50 million budget gap next year to stay afloat. Councillors have said that there are some difficult decisions to be made, but no plans have yet been announced.

00:00Councils all around the country have been struggling. Soaring costs and financial insecurity

00:05have meant serious hardships for many local authorities, and Cardiff Council is no different.

00:11In the most recent projections, Cardiff Council could face a massive budget gap of almost

00:15£50 million, with longer-term gaps over the next few years of over £140 million.

00:22The Council's Cabinet Member for Finance, Modernisation and Performance, Councillor

00:26Chris Weaver, has said some tough decisions will have to be made over the next few weeks

00:30and months in order to keep the Council's finances in check.

00:34He said he was committed to creating a balanced budget, and said priorities would lie with

00:38key services that local residents rely on, but that task was becoming increasingly difficult

00:43given the financial constraints.

00:45He blamed inflation and more dependence on social services, as well as increased costs

00:49of maintaining roads, parks and education, and general building work, and the added pressures

00:54on the Council.

00:55A budget will be announced towards the end of this week.
