00:00Good news may be on the way for cardiothoracic surgeons who graduated from the Royal College
00:07of Surgeons of Edinburgh via the Parallel Pathway Programme. The lack of recognition
00:13for the programme is likely to be resolved, with the RCSED being placed on the list of
00:18recognised specialist degrees in Schedule 4 of the Medical Act 1971, Amendment Bill
00:252024. The amendment, which was tabled for its first reading yesterday, could resolve
00:31the Malaysian Medical Council's refusal to list cardiothoracic surgeons from the College
00:36in the National Specialists Register. Two other specialist degrees, Medical Pathology
00:41from USM and Neurosurgery from Ireland's Royal College of Surgeons, which the MMC had
00:47previously refused to list on the NSR, have also been included on the list. However, the
00:54Cardiothoracic Surgeons' Programme at University Technology Mara, which is expected to produce
00:59its first specialists in about two years, is not on the list yet. Health Ministry Chief
01:05Surgeon Dr Bashir Ahmad Abdul Karim said changes will also be made to Section 14b2
01:11of the Medical Act to empower the Health Minister to register specialist doctors upon the MMC's
01:17recommendation. Bashir said these amendments were significant as the Health Ministry will
01:23be officially listed as a training institution.
