00:00This week, we would like to explore the causes of erectile dysfunction, and namely focusing

00:07on cigarette smoking.

00:14For many decades, we begin to link cigarette smoking with one important condition, which

00:20is cancer.

00:21In fact, two cancers have specifically been linked to smoking, which is lung cancer and

00:29bladder cancer.

00:30However, in recent years, we identified that smoking can also be linked with erectile dysfunction.

00:38So we want to know exactly what is the link.

00:42In fact, there are four reasons why cigarette smoking can cause erectile dysfunction.

00:48Number one is that the nicotine itself is inflammatory, and that itself can cause scarring

00:56and also occlusions of the vessels.

00:58And that is known to cause erectile dysfunction.

01:03Number two is that smoking contains chemicals that actually eventually can cause the inflammations

01:12of the blood vessels, and that is the same inflammations and damage that causes coronary

01:19artery disease and also strokes.

01:23So all these inflammations can result in atherosclerosis, and atherosclerosis in the

01:30early stages will affect the vessels that are quite small, for example, the penile artery.

01:36So in many ways, scientists believe that the early problems of erectile dysfunction can

01:43be the precursor for later problems such as heart attack and stroke.

01:49The third way of cigarette smoking causes erectile dysfunction is the reduction of nitric

01:55oxide.

01:57Nitric oxide is crucial in our body to cause vasodilation.

02:01When the cigarette smoking and the chemicals wipe out the nitric oxide, then the problem

02:06arises with erectile dysfunction.

02:10And the fourth reason why people who smoke will have erectile dysfunction is the activation

02:16of sympathetic system.

02:18When the sympathetic system is activated, the blood pressure goes up, and it also will

02:24constrict the blood flow to the penis, and that itself is pretty bad for erection.
