Marathon Oil to Pay $240 Million for Air Quality Violations to North Dakota Indian Reservation

The federal government announced a settlement of more than $240 million with Marathon Oil for air quality violations at its operations on the Fort Berthold Indian Reservation in North Dakota. The settlement mandates Marathon to reduce emissions, resulting in a pollution reduction of over 2.3 million tons. This initiative aims to improve air quality and reduce health risks for the Fort Berthold community and other areas in North Dakota. The company will invest $177 million in compliance measures to further cut emissions from its facilities. This case marks the first of its kind against an oil and gas producer for major source emissions violations under the Clean Air Act's Prevention of Significant Deterioration program.
