00:00This year's NAIDOC theme is patrula puni rāla, paua rāla, keep the fire burning,

00:18black, loud and proud.

00:22NAIDOC celebrations are important to us because it gives us the opportunity to celebrate our

00:25culture and to celebrate our achievements throughout the years.

00:30It pushes us to continuously fight for our rights just like our ancestors did.

00:35Thank you for coming out here today to start our week of celebrations.

00:40Keep the fire burning, wear black, be loud and proud.

00:52This NAIDOC week lets us reflect on the importance of cultural pride and indeed the power of

01:03Tasmanian Aboriginal people.

01:08Your contributions to our shared history and future are absolutely invaluable and we are

01:17committed to walking alongside you in partnership and respect.

01:23So thank you again for inviting me here today and I do acknowledge the long road the City

01:28of Launceston has to reach a place where true history, storytelling and the ongoing role

01:35of the Tasmanian Aboriginal people in this is properly remembered and respected, an important

01:42place that is held in our community.

01:46So we as a Council, we're committed to sharing the journey ahead and to keep the fire burning.
