Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil will meet with all social media platform providers in Malaysia at the end of July to address the management of cyberbullying issues.

Speaking to reporters after visiting the Malaysian Film Directors Association (FDAM) Convention and inspecting film production facilities on Saturday (July 6), Fahmi expressed dissatisfaction with the commitment shown by platform providers in handling complaints related to cyberbullying.

Regarding a recent case involving a TikTok influencer allegedly committing suicide due to cyberbullying, Fahmi said the matter has been handed over to the police for investigation.

00:00On a different topic, there was a case recently about a girl, a social media influencer on TikTok who committed suicide due to cyberbullying.
00:10So can you talk on this issue a bit?
00:14I've spoken to the Prime Minister.
00:16I've received a message from the Prime Minister this morning regarding this issue.
00:21I've spoken to the Minister of Digital Affairs, Mr. Gobind Singh.
00:26He has also spoken to Mr. Datuk Sri Azalina, Mr. Usman Saib, who is the Minister of Legislation and Parliament.
00:39So we have a consensus that this incident should not have happened.
00:47I am very reluctant to accept this news.
00:52Although we have repeatedly reminded the public,
00:55while we are commenting or uploading content,
00:59that this incident should not have happened.
01:02But it seems that the assurances that we have given are not enough.
01:07I will not touch the police investigation aspect.
01:14I understand that there is a police report that has been made by MENDIANG.
01:20And we leave it to the police to investigate.
01:23But at the same time, in terms of management and management of social media platforms,
01:31I have spoken to TIKTOK and stated that we are disgusted and angry
01:41because we have not seen the seriousness of the cyberbullying issue.
01:55So this is one of the reasons why we need to investigate the relationship or management of social media platforms.
02:08But inshallah, this week, in the next few days,
02:12I have called for a meeting between MCMC, TIKTOK, the State Prosecutor's Office,
02:20and several other parties to see in detail, based on the complaints that have been received.
02:27I have spoken to MCMC.
02:30MENDIANG has not made a complaint, especially regarding the cyberbullying that has occurred previously.
02:44MCMC has stated that MENDIANG has made a complaint previously,
02:51but regarding other matters, not this issue.
02:55So I have asked MCMC to provide a list of complaints that have been received.
03:03But what we want is a systemic change that needs to be made.
03:12Because we are not sure how many people may suffer in silence as a result of cyberbullying.
03:21The government's commitment is that those who are responsible will be brought to court.
03:28And this is what we need to investigate.
03:33If they are found guilty, they have to bear the consequences.
03:38And once again, I would like to remind all social media users,
03:42just because we can post negative comments,
03:46doesn't mean we should post negative comments,
03:49comments that can hurt people's feelings.
03:51We don't know if someone has received our comments in a bad way.
03:57If they feel like they are committing suicide,
04:05that is not a good thing to do, especially in social media.
04:10And I am worried that if this cyberbullying trend continues,
04:17or it enters schools as an example,
04:20this is what we don't want.
04:22This is a very serious matter and we see it as part of online safety for children and families.
04:29This is part of our discussion on online safety for children and families.
04:35And I make a commitment to immediately investigate and take action,
04:44if necessary, on social media platforms.
04:59Are you curbing this cyberbullying or hiding behind anonymity online for cyberbullying?
05:05Any measures from the government looking into this?
05:07In general, what we are trying to do on online safety for children and families,
05:13it includes aspects of online scamming, online gambling,
05:21pedophilia and sexual crimes,
05:28as well as cyberbullying.
05:30So there are a number of things that we are looking into,
05:35but there is no specific decision yet.
05:40Some of these things, as Dato' Azalina mentioned,
05:44involve the transfer of assets, such as mule accounts.
05:51So that will solve the scam aspect, for example.
05:58But there are a few other things that we need to take action on.
06:02At the end of the day, it is about compliance of these social media platforms.
06:06We understand that these social media platforms are making money from Malaysians.
06:12They benefit from the ads that are played on their platforms.
06:19But no matter what happens, they must be held accountable.
06:22They must be subject to the law in our country.
06:31Do you have any words for the Beri family?
06:35Yes, I will visit them.
06:38I am quite upset that this happened.
06:42This really should not have happened.
06:45I believe what triggered it was how her account was doxxed.
06:53Or rather, in a live session on TikTok,
06:58her face was posted very prominently.
07:02This is absolutely terrible.
07:05And we must be mindful.
07:12And I would like to urge all Malaysians,
07:15if you feel that you are a cyber bully,
07:20do not remain silent.
07:22File a police report.
07:23File a complaint with the MCMC.
07:25And we will take action.
