Social media platforms should include algorithms to detect cyberbullying or threatening content in vernacular languages.
This was the suggestion by broadcast journalist S. Hemalatha, 40, a friend of the late influencer Rajeswary Appahu, or Esha, who took her own life last year after facing cyberbullying and threats.
00:00Right now, I'm facing this cyberbullying on the TikTok platform, and I was accused of covering evidences pertaining to my friend Rajeshwari or Aesha.
00:18So at that point of time, I've already given my full cooperation to the police.
00:22So the forensic experts and the police, they have concluded the cause of death.
00:28But right now, they are saying that I'm trying to hide certain facts pertaining to her case.
00:36And Mr. Joseph Prakash has approached me to ask evidences pertaining to Aesha's death.
00:45So these are all crucial evidences which I cannot be giving out.
00:51So that's about it.
00:53And also, in terms of my cyberbullying incident, I appeal to the MCMC and our Minister Fahmy Fazil to please come up with a mechanism where it stops fake accounts.
01:09Please implement biometrics or something which could stop this because I think I should be the last victim right now because there are a lot of unreported cases also because normally there's no big action taken.
01:23And it's a very complicated process actually to lodge a MCMC report.
01:28So those who are uneducated actually or not tech savvy, they will be finding it a bit difficult to lodge a MCMC report because we have to give the links, we have to crop the videos, exactly what being said, and we have to give an explanation and translation as well.
01:45And TikTok algorithm do not detect Tamil vulgar words and the failure of TikTok detecting violations which is spoken in Tamil words need to be addressed immediately for the safety of the users.
02:01So I appeal TikTok and MCMC to collaborate and collaborate and come up with a proper mechanism to handle this.
