00:00So the counting of ballots has started in Portsmouth, Portsmouth North and Portsmouth
00:21South seats are both up to grabs with the exit poll predicting 410 seats for Labour
00:25in a landslide victory, 131 seats are predicted for the Conservatives, 61 for the Liberal
00:31Democrats and 13 for Reform UK in a surprising rise.
00:44Good evening, my name is Mark Zimmer, I'm Reform UK for Portsmouth South. I'm here at
00:50the counts and it's been really, really exciting. Looking around, there's a buzz in the room.
00:58The feedback we've had, actually the feedback we had before we even came here was in the
01:04pub across the way. And the response we got from the younger people, all voting Reform
01:11UK, that took me back a bit. So it's been really exciting. Walking around, just looking
01:18at the tables, listening, there is a buzz in here. I think there's going to be a little
01:24few shocks tonight, but I won't tell you any more, you'll have to wait and see.
01:30This evening has clearly been a very tough night for the Conservative Party, losing a
01:33number of key members of Parliament, particularly here in Hampshire, where we have lost some
01:38of our very valued people who've served our communities for over a decade. It is a real
01:44time for the Conservative Party now to soul-search. They really need to reconnect with the public
01:48and they really need to understand what the public place a lot of value on. And I think
01:52that's on British values, it's on morals, it's on putting the British public first.
02:14I, Councillor Jason Mazzacoli, returning officer for the Portsmouth North constituency, hereby
02:21declare that the total number of votes given to each candidate was as follows. Simon James
02:27Dodd, Liberal Democrat, 3,031. Amanda Louise Martin, Labour Party, 14,495.
02:44Penelope Mary Morden, commonly known as Penny Morden, the Conservative Party candidate,
02:561715. Duncan Stuart Robinson, the Green Party, 1,851. Melvin Stuart Todd, Reform UK, 8,501.
03:26I therefore give public notice that Amanda Louise Martin is duly elected as a Member
03:32of Parliament for the Portsmouth North constituency.
03:37Portsmouth is my home. It's where everybody I love lives. And being your MP is the privilege
03:55of a lifetime. And I will not take it for granted.
04:00Tonight is historic. We have returned in the bellwether seat a Labour MP and we hopefully
04:09return a Labour government. And if my friend and colleague Stephen Morgan is returned,
04:15it will be the first time we have two Labour MPs in the home of the Royal Navy.
04:24To those disappointed at the result tonight, let me cheer you up. Democracy is never wrong.
04:32I want to add my thanks to all those who have facilitated this election, the count, the
04:38police, those who ran polling stations, the electoral team at Portsmouth City Council
04:44and also to all candidates who have run in North and South and in particular my running
04:51mate in the South, Sina Biddle.
04:54Congratulations, Amanda. You have my assurance that I and my team will do everything we can
05:02to assist you in setting up your office and having a smooth transfer of our casework so
05:09that the people of Portsmouth have a good service throughout that period.

07:11The people of Portsmouth have spoken, they have voted to change our country for the better
07:20and that change starts right here tonight.
07:31Seeing that we have put forward a positive campaign of hope and of change, I think that
07:36they want to see a trust in politicians and I think that Keir Starmer's message is something
07:41that I know I personally believe in, is that to be elected as an MP is humbling but it's
07:46a service. And those that haven't elected me, I guess we need to show them that we are
07:52there to do the job for them and we are here to work for the people of Portsmouth.
07:57So it's clearly a change election, nothing was working in our country, people in Portsmouth
08:02are struggling to see a doctor or a dentist, we see raw sewage pumped into our oceans,
08:06cost of living has taken its toll on so many people up and down our country and we wanted
08:10to see change and people have voted for that today with this historic result, both in Portsmouth
08:14North and across the country.
