Melbourne police searching for a number of males following fatal stolen car collision

Two teenage girls have been arrested, but police are searching for a number of males after a fatal collision in Melbourne's east.

00:00There's still glass that's strewn across this intersection here at the corner of Highbury

00:05and Warragal Roads in Burwood, which is about 14 kilometres east of Melbourne CBD.

00:10You can see behind me the force of the impact here, where this sedan careened off the road

00:16and basically obliterated this brick and wooden fence behind me.

00:21Sadly, the driver of that car, he died at the scene despite attempts to resuscitate

00:29him and we spoke to the owner of this home, Peter, who says that it was a really tragic

00:35scene.

00:36This is what he had to say.

00:37It was like an explosion.

00:40It was obviously hitting a brick and pailing fence, it was enormous.

00:49Now there was a car that was a stolen four wheel drive that's believed to have crashed

00:54into this sedan.

00:55That ended up crashing into a tree just metres down the road and inside were two 15 year

01:01old girls.

01:02They were arrested by police and are now under police guard in hospital.

01:06We don't know the extent of their injuries, it's not believed to be serious.

01:10However, we do know that there was a group of males that was also in that four wheel

01:15drive believed to be stolen who very quickly fled the scene.

01:19Police put up the helicopter, they also had the dog squad out as well as the public order

01:23response team.

01:24They were trying to look for them, but as yet they have not located those males that

01:29were involved.

01:30And major crash investigation unit detectives were here after this collision at 7 o'clock

01:36last night.

01:38They have been trying to piece together exactly what happened and what caused this crash.

01:43One very strong theory is that this stolen car could have come through this red light

01:48and actually T-boned that sedan that was just going about its business.

01:53There is actually a red light camera here and also CCTV, so no doubt they'll be looking

01:58very carefully at that.

02:00But they have also asked that anybody who has dash cam footage or witnessed this crash

02:05to get in contact with them.
