00:00It was a training flight that went horribly wrong, leaving an instructor pilot dead while
00:08his student survived.
00:10I was very lucky and Roger was very unlucky and that's the nature of crashes.
00:15Roger Corbin had been flying helicopters for 35 years and been involved in more than 700
00:21rescues.
00:22But his death during a simulated hydraulics failure in 2017 left his family and his colleagues
00:29devastated.
00:30Everything was a joy in life for him, like you said, larger than life and he cared so
00:36much for everyone around him.
00:38Coroner Olivia McTaggart has now released her findings on the tragic incident, saying
00:43the training procedure was conducted during a crosswind, contrary to the conditions stipulated
00:49in the aircraft manual.
00:51I'm satisfied that the crosswind contributed to the inability to control the aircraft.
00:57The coroner said despite his skills, the veteran pilot misjudged when to intervene
01:02once his student began to lose control.
01:06His judgement erred on this occasion.
01:08This fact contributed to the crash and his tragic death.
01:12The coroner also found there was no pre-flight briefing or demonstration of the emergency
01:18simulation.
01:19She said these procedures are critically important, although she acknowledged they may not have
01:25prevented the crash.
01:26We do know that at the time that it occurred, he would have done absolutely everything he
01:31could have to have got that aircraft on the ground.
01:34His death is a tragedy, obviously, for his family, in particular his kids, but it's also
01:40a loss for the industry, who has lost one of those elite mentors.
01:46Despite the tragedy, Roger Corbin's twin daughters are maintaining a connection with the industry
01:52their father so dearly loved.
01:54Susie's literally weeks away from getting her commercial helicopter licence and she'll
01:58be following in her dad's footsteps and he'll be supporting all of the business as well.
02:04Ensuring Roger Corbin's legacy lives on.
