00:00Barrett Court Retirement Village in Skegness has celebrated its 10th
00:05anniversary with a party. Hello there I'm Leanne Hawthorne, I'm the Retirement
00:12Housing Officer here at Barrett Court Skegness. I work alongside Vicki Edgar
00:16who is also our full-time Retirement Housing Officer. It's a milestone day
00:23isn't it? It really is, 10 years to the day since Barrett Court opened and it's
00:29just wonderful to see the residents coming together and enjoying the
00:33celebration. Now can you tell me what's different about Barrett Court to other
00:39retirement homes? So Barrett Court is classed as retirement living. What
00:46that is, it's very much encouraged independent living. We have 40 flats,
00:51apartments on site and they're all one bedroom, living room, kitchenette and
00:57excuse me and a wet room shower room. So it's it's a little apartment within a
01:04community where we have walnut care on site so for anybody that has a care
01:10package they've got staff here day and night to meet their needs and we're
01:16here to help with the housing side so if there's a problem with the water or
01:21heating or whatever if there's an issue we're here to help. Now how many
01:25residents do you have? In total 40 flats, we've got 41 residents. One of the flats
01:34is a husband and wife that's here so yeah we've got one big community here
01:39that's our ethos. What is the age range? So our youngest I
01:45think is 50 coming up to 55 and our oldest is 94 years young. Now I know the
01:56cafe here it's open to the public and has got a really good reputation but
02:00you've got other facilities here haven't you? Yeah so this is this is an
02:04extension on what we try and promote with independent living so when the
02:09residents reside here at Barrack Court they have a FOB. This FOB entry allows
02:15them to go into the newsagents and the hairdressers and also into the cafe
02:26without actually having to step foot out of the main doors and out. So on
02:31bad weather days they can get access to all their needs. There's a shop as
02:35well isn't there? Yeah yeah so we've got Dee's convenience store, we have Barnet
02:39Babes hair salon and Steve with Central Cafe. And are there any activities that
02:47are organized for the residents? Yes yeah I've just handed out the newsletter
02:51for July so every month Vicky and I compile a newsletter for the residents
02:55let them know key bits of information but we also put a what's on at Barrack
03:00Court this could be bingo it could be a dementia coffee group it what whatever
03:07we can get in forum we will put it on the calendar. We have Askafield as well
03:12that come they do an art session with the residents and once once every so
03:18many weeks they take the residents to the farm and they get to have a day out
03:22at the farm with them and have a lunch included. So they've got a lot going on?
03:27There is always something going on and we have our regular fortnightly coffee
03:32mornings so and that enables them to raise their own money for towards
03:38something to do at Christmas if they want to go out on an outing or you know
03:42but it is the ethos is for Barrack Court it is a community they are their own
03:48community within this building and to all keep an eye out for each other. So
03:53what have you got planned for the 10th anniversary? 10th anniversary so we've
03:57got entertainers we've got Lenny here and a colleague of his to do some
04:02singing for us we've got the ice cream van here and we're putting on a full
04:06buffet for all our residents and catered for their needs so yeah we've got plenty
04:12of little activities happening as well we're going to get the garden bowls out
04:16later. I think the new bowling association in Skegness might be
04:22interested in that. So thank you, thank you very much. No worries, thank you.
04:28Les, I understand that you moved into Barrack Court just a few months after it
04:34opened. Yes, four months after. What do you enjoy about living here?
04:40I guess I was very good with most people, very friendly. They treat me very well so far and no one disturbs me, they try to be helpful at all times and I've made some good friends here.
05:01Do you like the fact that you can go shopping here and you've got your cafe here as well?
05:06Yes I do, I enjoy it. What am I missing? I used to like enjoying the newspapers, but then all of a sudden they stopped selling it here.
05:19Well we'll definitely have to make sure there's some newspapers here. You're going to be in the Skegness stand in next week.
05:27So you'll definitely need that one, won't you?
05:30Yeah, I'm a bit shy, I'm not so easy.
05:34Jim, are you enjoying the party?
