Should you be taking protein powder? I'm a dietitian, let me explain.

When I was in college, I worked at a sports nutrition clinic and my main job was to talk

to all the athletes before they left. And I would focus on two main things. You should

have a source of protein and carbs within 30 minutes of your workout and a full balanced

meal within 90. Your muscles actually grow at rest and they need nutrients for that.

And protein powder can be really convenient for getting that in right away. Sometimes I'll use it

after a workout like right now to give myself time to make a full meal without feeling totally

ravenous. But whole foods like chocolate milk and Greek yogurt work just as well, so you don't

need to use it if you don't like it. And if you do use it, don't overdo it because that can put

a lot of stress on your kidneys, liver, and bones. Like with all supplements, protein powders aren't

regulated, so make sure you choose one that's third-party certified for safety. In short,

protein powder can definitely serve a purpose, but you don't need to use it if you get in
