00:00Drones like this are cheap and accessible but did you know that they are a crucial part of the war

00:06in Ukraine? These devices which are easy to buy are causing a headache for Ukraine and its allies.

00:13Drones are very important of course they can be used for a lot of good purpose but they can also

00:17be weaponized and one way is for example for espionage or for finding targets and then sending

00:25ammunition towards the target location. Despite their low cost there's concerns that they could

00:31be used to knock out complex air defense systems costing millions of pounds. Current technology

00:38that we have at the moment is advanced technology but at the same time it's quite expensive

00:45technology. Now having these small drones which cost probably a thousand euro you would not be

00:51feeling very comfortable of spending a hundred thousand euro missile. NATO have a designated

01:00team working around the clock to tackle this new threat. First step is to understand the threat

01:05and what the capability of the threat is. Second step is to be able to identify the threat early

01:11enough so you can do something about it. Third thing is to develop countermeasures to know how

01:16to interrupt the operation of the drone such as jammers like I have here.

01:23This is a counter US jammer, counter drone jammer which is actually able to interrupt the drone

01:29communication with the remote control. Is there a risk that without technologies like this what you

01:35get is very very expensive missile systems like the Patriot which we've seen here being able to be

01:41effectively you know shut down or hindered by a drone which somebody could buy off the street?

01:47Absolutely that risk is definitely there and we have seen this being employed in Ukraine.
