00:00One man's toxic sludge is another man's potpourri.
00:03I don't know. It's some kind of soup.
00:06Welcome to WatchMojo.
00:08And today we're counting down our picks for the best characters we thought were villains,
00:12but ended up good guys.
00:14Eventually at least.
00:15There will be spoilers.
00:18Number 10. Old Man Marley. Home Alone.
00:21You ever heard of the South Bend Shovel Slayer?
00:25No.
00:26That's him.
00:27Even Boo Radley never had this bad of a reputation.
00:30Rumored to be a murderous serial killer called the South Bend Shovel Slayer,
00:35Marley put the fear of God in Kevin McCallister's soul.
00:38Granted, the wizened face, dark clothing, and the shovel didn't help matters.
00:43Eventually though, Kevin makes Marley's acquaintance at a local church.
00:47And there, Marley debunks those wild rumors about him.
00:50Merry Christmas.
00:52It turns out that he was estranged from his son due to an argument,
00:56preventing Marley from seeing his beloved granddaughter.
00:59If you miss him, why don't you call him?
01:01I'm afraid if I call him, he won't talk to me.
01:04How do you know?
01:06I don't know.
01:08I'm just afraid he won't.
01:09Kevin's friendship with Marley proved life-saving,
01:12as Marley rescued him from the wet bandits.
01:14Appearances really can be deceiving.
01:17Come on. Let's get going.
01:20Come on. Let's get you home.
01:23Number 9. Phil Connors, Groundhog Day
01:27Sometimes protagonists can be the worst villains.
01:30Weatherman Phil Connors is a real piece of work in particular.
01:34Ned, I would love to stand here and talk with you.
01:38But I'm not going to.
01:41Snobbish, rude, and condescending,
01:43Phil is forced to stay in Pugsatawney for Groundhog Day,
01:46intending to leave the following morning.
01:49Instead, Phil finds himself in a time loop,
01:52waking up each morning to Sonny and Cher
01:54and repeating the same events.
02:08Yes!
02:09It takes a while,
02:10but Phil eventually strives to use the time loop for good,
02:13helping the people of Pugsatawney
02:15and even falling in love with his colleague Rita.
02:18His change of heart complete,
02:20he finally awakens the next day,
02:22with Rita by his side.
02:24Oh, please. Not again.
02:25That is a great sign.
02:26No, it's not.
02:27Don't listen to this man.
02:30It's too early.
02:32This is one redemption arc we approve of.
02:36Number 8. Cable, Deadpool 2
02:39A time-travelling soldier,
02:41Cable is introduced as just another villain Wade Wilson must fight
02:45when he attacks a young mutant, Russell Collins,
02:47Wade wastes no time to protect the latter.
02:50Hello, Russell.
02:53But Russell betrays him big time
02:55when he solicits inmate Juggernaut in a revenge plot,
02:58with Juggernaut ripping Wade in half.
03:01As Wade recovers,
03:02Cable explains that Russell becomes a serial killer in the future,
03:06killing Cable's family.
03:08You came into my home
03:10and took the only thing that made it a home.
03:13Wade agrees to help take Russell down,
03:16sacrificing himself.
03:18Cable then travels back in time,
03:20not only to save Wade,
03:22but also his girlfriend, Vanessa.
03:24It's okay.
03:25There's a time for us.
03:26It's just not now.
03:28I need you.
03:30The real hero, it turns out,
03:32is the one you least expect.
03:35Number 7. Jobu Tupaci
03:37Everything, everywhere, all at once.
03:40I got bored one day
03:42and I put everything on a bagel.
03:47Everything.
03:49It's bad enough learning about several parallel universes,
03:53but what if your daughter were a villain in all of them?
03:56Evelyn Wang is a struggling Chinese immigrant
03:59with a strained relationship with her daughter, Joy.
04:02You are very lucky.
04:03Do you know that your mom is already very open to you?
04:07She is still a foreigner.
04:09While her laundromat is being audited by the IRS,
04:13her husband from a parallel universe saddles her with devastating news.
04:17Alpha Joy, known as Jobu Tupaci,
04:20is going to destroy the multiverse.
04:22But Jobu's villainy is a cry for help.
04:25What she wants is for Evelyn to join her in the nihilist void.
04:29I wanted to see if I went in, could I finally escape?
04:35Like actually die.
04:37Evelyn instead chooses radical empathy,
04:40saving Jobu from the nihilistic everything bagel
04:43and reconciling with her daughter.
04:45Lesson learned.
04:46Do not underestimate the power of bagels.
04:54A man on the inside is always requisite in a revolution.
04:58The plan was always to get you out.
05:00Half the tributes were on it.
05:02This is the revolution.
05:04We are introduced to Plutarch Heavensby as little more than a capital stooge.
05:09The new game maker after Seneca Crane dies.
05:12Plutarch also advises President Snow
05:15that the best way to destroy Katniss is to destroy her image.
05:18She just wants to save her own skin, it's as simple as that.
05:21I think that's true.
05:23She's become a beacon of hope for the rebellion.
05:26And she has to be eliminated.
05:28But it isn't until Katniss is rescued by the District 13 rebels
05:32at the end of Catching Fire that Plutarch's true loyalties are revealed.
05:36Plutarch is a secret rebel against the capital,
05:39even helping to shield Katniss' prep team from torture.
05:42He would eventually become Panem's Secretary of Communications under the new regime,
05:47so his subterfuge wasn't totally disinterested.
05:50And whatever she's doing, we conceived it.
05:54It was our plan all along.
05:57Of course it was.
06:00Still, we can be assured that Plutarch is one with his moral compass,
06:05still intact.
06:075. General Francis X. Hummel, The Rock
06:24Everybody likes a rebel with a cause.
06:27Once a loyal state stooge, General Frank Hummel and his second-in-command
06:32now go against the US government itself, taking the island of Alcatraz prisoner.
06:37The demands?
06:38$100 million due to his men and the families of those who died on covert missions
06:43and were not compensated.
06:45If not, then San Francisco will get the worst rocket show imaginable.
06:50You alert the media, I launch the gas.
06:53You refuse payment, I launch the gas.
06:56But Hummel is not a case of a character with a good motive but bad means.
07:01His rocket threat was a bluff, detonating it harmlessly into the sea.
07:06Hummel then valiantly tries to call off the mission.
07:09This mission was based on the threat of force.
07:12I'm not about to kill 80,000 innocent people.
07:15Do you think I'm out of my f***ing mind?
07:17His refusal to endanger civilians leads to his tragic death due to mutiny.
07:22The true heroes are often the most unexpected ones.
07:264. The Grinch
07:28Dr. Seuss, How the Grinch Stole Christmas
07:31He's a mean one, alright, but like Ebenezer Scrooge, the Grinch isn't totally irredeemable.
07:37Bleeding hearts of the world unite!
07:42Detesting the very idea of Christmas and the holidays,
07:45the Grinch hatches a plan to steal Christmas from the residents of Whoville.
07:49In this adaptation, however, the Grinch's hatred for the holiday stems from schoolyard harassment
07:55and the materialistic culture of Whovian Christmas in general.
08:07The Grinch steals everybody's presents,
08:09only to find the townspeople have taken his criticism to heart and began to sing carols.
08:15Every Who down in Whoville, the tall and the small,
08:19was singing without any presents at all.
08:22Realizing the true meaning of Christmas for the first time,
08:25the Grinch returns the presents and apologizes for his actions.
08:29This Grinch is truly no humbug.
08:33Fa-hoo-ray-moo-ya-hoo-dee-ha
08:37Well, oh Christmas, pray don't you dare
08:47We were shocked, we tell you, when this shamelessly corrupt police captain
08:51turned out to be not such a bad guy.
08:54I'm shocked, shocked to find that gambling is going on in here.
08:57Granted, Renault was just a minor antagonist in this tale of loyalties,
09:02lost love, and fighting Nazis.
09:04The worst he ever did was to try and arrest Ilsa's husband, Laszlo.
09:09This is the end of the chase.
09:1020,000 francs says it isn't.
09:13Is that a serious offer?
09:14But Renault does do Rick a salad when the latter shoots Strasser dead.
09:19It turns out corruption can go both ways, and may be used for good.
09:24And of course, there is Rick's now iconic line about his and Renault's new alliance.
09:29Louis, I think this is the beginning of a beautiful friendship.
09:38It isn't easy being a replicant.
09:40In this dystopian future of Blade Runner,
09:42these humanoid androids are created and destroyed
09:45once their use in the space colonies has been fulfilled.
09:49It seems you feel our work is not a benefit to the public.
09:53Replicants are like any other machine.
09:56They're either a benefit or a hazard.
09:58One such replicant is Roy Batty,
10:00who manages to elude the authorities with his fellows,
10:03seeking out his corporate creator to give him more life.
10:07I've done questionable things.
10:10Also extraordinary things.
10:13Revel in your time.
10:15But it isn't long before Rick Deckard catches up to him
10:18and Roy's own body begins to fail him.
10:21He dies, uttering a now iconic monologue.
10:24All those moments will be lost in time.
10:31What he wanted, in the end, was what we would all want.
10:34More time on this brief Earth.
10:37And that is the most human thing of all.

10:56Number 1. Severus Snape – The Harry Potter Franchise
11:00There are few Harry Potter characters that inspire such love and hate
11:04as Hogwarts' own Potions Master and ex-Death Eater.
11:08Severus Snape is acerbic, domineering,
11:11and truly hates Harry for the sins of his father,
11:14who had picked on Snape in school.
11:17Sir, it's Quidditch tomorrow.
11:19Then I suggest you take extra care, Mr. Potter.
11:22Loss of limb will not excuse you.
11:26But Snape ultimately turns from Voldemort's pure-blood terrorism
11:30due to the love he had for a Muggle-born, Lily, Harry's own mother.
11:35Despite Snape's trauma and grudges,
11:37he successfully protects not only Harry, but his fellow students.
11:41He isn't even guilty of Dumbledore's death,
11:44since Snape only killed him on his orders.
11:47Avada Kedavra!
11:50In the end, Snape deserved credit for his covert and heroic actions,
11:54and for teaching us that being nice is different than being good.
11:59Look at me.
12:07You have your mother's eyes.
12:09Which other admirable villain-cum-hero had you weeping tears in the rain?
