Beach comes to Lincolnshire Show

A new attraction at this year's Lincolnshire Show was a beach. 60 tonnes of sand had been shipped from the Lincolnshire coast and it was proving very popular with the students.

00:00Good morning from the Lincolnshire Show. This is the 139th show and everyone associates

00:10it with the celebration of agriculture and the best food and drink. Now what you probably

00:16wouldn't expect to see here is a beach. I'm with Rosie Crust who is the head of charity.

00:25Why have you brought a beach to Lincolnshire Show this year?

00:29So the Lincolnshire Show is all about celebrating what's great about our wonderful county and

00:33obviously we are so lucky to have the East Coast in Lincolnshire so we wanted to bring

00:38the beach to the Lincolnshire Show for families and children to enjoy making sand pies and

00:43having a lovely day on the beach. Well we've already got some children on here so I think

00:48it's going to be a big success. I have 60 tonnes of sand that you've brought from the

00:54coast. Yes we've got 60 tonnes from the Lincolnshire Coast here today with us for the next few

00:58days and then we'll be going back to the coast once it's had it's visit to the Lincolnshire

01:03Show. The environment agents are probably going to be really pleased about that because

01:05they've just spent £7 million putting sand back onto the beach so they're going to be

01:09pleased with that. Now you're involved with some of the education and charity things that's

01:14going on today so would you like to tell people what they can expect? Yes absolutely. So lots

01:19of people don't know that the Lincolnshire Show Grant is actually a charity and our objective

01:22is to promote food farming in the countryside so behind us in the Schools Challenge we've

01:27got 57 Lincolnshire schools competing to be crowned Schools Challenge champions. So

01:33they basically choose a challenge project, they've been working on it all year through

01:36in school, they'll do food farming, sustainability, agriculture, local community and they're presenting

01:42to a panel of judges and then they'll be crowned Schools Challenge champions. We also have

01:46livestock tours going around the show, we have a careers trail to get secondary schools

01:50interested within the careers within the agri-food industry. We've got an education marquee which

01:56this year is themed around super soil so so much for school children and members of the

02:01public to come to the show to basically learn a little bit more about food and farming and

02:05agriculture. Well we'll be having a look at that later, thank you Rosie. Now we've got

02:10Councillor Colin Davie who's popped over to the beach. I couldn't talk him into making

02:16any sandcastles but he has agreed to talk to us about the season along the coast. How's it going?

02:24I think it's been very difficult so far this year. Obviously the weather has not been great

02:29and businesses are reporting that it's been very challenging over the last few weeks and

02:34so obviously you know we're looking forward now to the peak season of July and August.

02:41It's really important we get good weather and we've got some good weather in the forecast for

02:45next week so let's hope that sticks with us until September. It's really important for our coastal

02:51businesses that we actually make sure that the message about how great Lincolnshire is, about how

02:57great the coast is, gets out far and wide. We need to encourage people to come even if it's for a day

03:03trip or for a short weekend. Come to Lincolnshire, come to our beaches. They are some of the most

03:08fantastic in the country and they are great places to explore and great places to bring your kids to.

03:15So Lincolnshire is open for business this year, the coast is absolutely beautiful.

03:21Come and enjoy it, come and spend your money with us and we'll make sure you have a good time.

03:26It certainly seems like the weather's getting better and we've even got a bit of sun breaking

03:31through on the beach at Lincolnshire right now. So thank you Councillor Davey and enjoy your day.

03:43children playing in the sand so we'll just see how it's getting on.

03:58in Lincolnshire. Did you expect to see a beach when you came to the show?

04:05I've seen it online on Instagram. I've seen they have one this year but to be fair it's bigger

04:10than I thought it would be. I know that it's kind of a big activity for kids this season but yeah

04:15it's amazing. But they've brought it in, great quality sand, good for sandcastles, keep the

04:20kids entertained, just hope the sun comes out. Yeah well it's trying isn't it? It's really trying.

04:25We'll get there later on. Can we have a look at some of these sandcastles here?

04:41Yeah. Are you? Is it good quality sand? Is it good sand? Yeah. Well it comes from the

04:46Lincolnshire coast so do you go to the seaside? Do you visit Skegness or during the summer?

04:53Yeah. Okay. So you're enjoying making sandcastles now. Are you going to go and

05:01have a look at some animals though today? Yeah. What do you think you might like best,

05:05the animals or the sand? The animals. Sand? Okay well that answers that isn't it? Thank
