Biloela residents in central Queensland react to Coalition’s nuclear plans

Communities where a future Coalition government has flagged building nuclear reactors, have been speaking about yesterday's proposal. Residents in Biloela near the Callide Power Station have a mixed view on the matter.

00:00Yesterday, Mr Dutton released the Liberal Party's plans to build a nuclear power plant

00:06here, just 10 minutes from a small regional town in central Queensland.

00:10Biloela residents have mixed feelings about what that would mean.

00:14We heard from farmers who say it's a divisive issue in the community, including anti-nuclear

00:19posts on a community notice board.

00:21It's a bit unknown.

00:22I don't really know much about nuclear and it sounds a bit scary, but maybe if they explained

00:27it better, more details for us, yeah, might think differently then.

00:32But producers are eager to learn more about what this could look like.

00:37While the Chamber of Commerce here is supportive of the idea and favours nuclear power over

00:42renewables.

00:43It's reaching for the future, it's reaching for the stars so to speak.

00:46We need to have a plan moving forward and our population's increasing ever more in Queensland.

00:52We're proud about that, we're proud about presenting an area that wants to accommodate

00:56this sort of infrastructure.

00:58It's one of two stations in Queensland set to become nuclear, which the state LNP leader

01:03David Crisafulli has not thrown his support behind.

01:06Cowlard Power Station itself has been subject to controversy over the past few years, after

01:12an explosion in 2021 left thousands without power.

01:16Mr Dutton says he wants to see two of the stations come online within the next decade.
