Alberto causes coastal flooding in Texas

Storm chaser Mike Scantlin reported live from Rockport, Texas, on June 19, as Tropical Storm Alberto pounded the coast with flooding.

00:00Joining us right now is Mike Scantlin, storm chaser Mike Scantlin, live in Rockport, Texas,

00:05this afternoon. And Mike, I see the water's way up there. Yes, sir. We've got the ocean is up and

00:14over the road here. This is Fulton Beach Road here in Rockport, Texas. You know, not a terrible

00:19amount of water. It's about a foot and a half or two feet deep here, and it's moving pretty quick.

00:23But, you know, further inland, we're dealing with, you know, just as much water over the roadways.

00:27In some areas, I think we've seen over six inches of rain here measured in the Rockport,

00:32Fulton Beach area. So, fortunately, we kept it just a little bit north of Corpus Christi proper,

00:38but still not a good situation for some of these folks. Fortunately, we have a little bit of

00:42clearing between the more, the heavier cells, and I think that's kind of helped us

00:47keep the drainage systems a little clear here. In any structures, we're looking at some footage

00:54here where it looks like houses are very, very close to the water, if not maybe a few inches

00:59above. Are you seeing any cases where people do have water in their homes? You know, I haven't

01:04seen anything in the homes. I've seen it getting really, really close. You know, they're just right

01:09on the cusp of having it be an issue. But right now, you know, this is the worst that I've seen

01:14here along the coast. I haven't seen much in the way of residential impacts. You know, I saw some

01:21reports earlier. I went and checked it out, and I didn't find it. So, you know, that's good news.

01:25That's really good news down here. Good news. And, Mike, you know, the wind, we're not expecting a

01:30tremendous amount of wind, maybe a couple of gusts of 40 to 60 miles per hour. It's mainly about the

01:34storm surge and the rainfall-related flooding. Have you seen much wind with any of these squalls

01:39come in? You know, in the heavier cells, I think we have had gusts probably close to 40 miles an

01:45hour. And, you know, we did have a couple of those tornado warnings earlier that you mentioned, and

01:49we've had a little bit of a spinner just coming into Rockport here just to my south. But, you know,

01:53that's where the heaviest winds I have experienced have been in the stronger cells that have just

01:57enough spin to gust up the winds to about 40 miles per hour. Okay, we have seen a couple of

02:03brief tornado warnings here and there, so we'll have to keep an eye out for that. And obviously,

02:08if you do get a brief tornadic spin-up, you can always see gusts that may pick up over 80

02:14miles per hour in one of those isolated events. Storm chaser Mike Scantlin, thank you so much
