00:00:00We'll be right back.
00:00:13Yes, welcome back to Zhengzhou
00:00:17in China here for the World
00:00:19Championships 2024. The final
00:00:22day and the mixed relay day. We
00:00:24appreciate you taking the time
00:00:26to join us and as you will see
00:00:28in a moment, we're going to be
00:00:30doing the final day of the
00:00:32World Championships in China.
00:00:33It's a bit of a point out, but
00:00:34it will be blatantly obvious in
00:00:37the next second or two. The
00:00:39weather's changed slightly here
00:00:43in Zhengzhou. Try one 80 has my
00:00:45name's Ian Stringer. That's the
00:00:46voice of Mariam Amur next to me.
00:00:49It's 24 degrees, which is fine.
00:00:51It's colder and it's not as
00:00:52humid. But the issue is the wet
00:00:54stuff behind that sign. That's
00:00:55the problem that we have.
00:00:57We have the modern pentathlon
00:00:59mixed relay. There is no riding.
00:01:01So we're about to show you what
00:01:03would essentially be the riding
00:01:05course. And it's a challenging
00:01:07course. And we saw the course in
00:01:09the men's final yesterday in the
00:01:11women's final the day before.
00:01:13But there will be no riding
00:01:15today because of the weather
00:01:17because of the weather
00:01:18conditions and the fencing.
00:01:20There will be no fencing today.
00:01:22They have. They've done it in
00:01:24the ranking round hall.
00:01:26So we will be having it live.
00:01:28But the swimming will take place
00:01:30to 100 feet freestyles by gender
00:01:32two and a half minutes the time
00:01:34and then the laser run. Now you
00:01:36will see a course at the moment
00:01:37that we will outline on this
00:01:39graphic. It's changed a little
00:01:40bit still 600 meters clearly,
00:01:42but it has changed a little bit
00:01:44so into the range. That's the
00:01:45same. Our athletes head into the
00:01:47range and shoot at a series of
00:01:50targets. 10 meter distance, five
00:01:51targets twice per athlete, and
00:01:53it turns left, but then it does
00:01:55not. It actually goes around the
00:01:56top of the course. The bit of the
00:01:58course on the right hand side,
00:01:59you can see that isn't part of
00:02:01the course, as it were. It now
00:02:02is. Just go with us for now.
00:02:05We'll explain more as we progress
00:02:07through the competition. The
00:02:09ranking round took place about
00:02:12three minutes ago. No, it's a bit
00:02:14longer than three minutes ago,
00:02:15but not too long ago. And our
00:02:19athletes are preparing Mariam for
00:02:23a truncated result of truncated
00:02:27mixed relay. They are the results
00:02:29after the bonus round. Yes.
00:02:33Ranking and bonus round put
00:02:34together now. So the ranking
00:02:36round is in there. The bonus
00:02:37round is in there and they are
00:02:39the standings as we are. Yes.
00:02:41With swimming to come, laser on
00:02:43to come. Yes. Right. It's a bit
00:02:45more confusing today in mixed
00:02:47relays. A lot of things change
00:02:49with the weather conditions.
00:02:51As you said, it is. Yes, it is.
00:02:53So we have the heat in front of
00:02:57us and we'll go through the
00:02:58heats in a few moments time. But
00:03:00Mariam, just tell me what the as
00:03:02an athlete, what the
00:03:04differences in conditions are
00:03:05going to add challenges to for
00:03:07our athletes? Well, first of all,
00:03:09the in terms of swimming, that's
00:03:11that's not going to change
00:03:12during the pool anyways. Um, in
00:03:14terms of the laser and obviously
00:03:16the ground is going to be a bit
00:03:18more slippery, so they have to
00:03:20take their time around the
00:03:22turns, making sure that, um,
00:03:24yeah, there's again no slipping.
00:03:26There are very tight turns in
00:03:28this new course that they've
00:03:30drawn out. Um, if the range
00:03:32starts that well now it looks
00:03:34fine. But if the range starts to
00:03:36pick up, I think there's going
00:03:38to be an issue with the laser
00:03:40shooting range. The pistols
00:03:42cannot be left in the rain that
00:03:44long. They will get much more
00:03:46So how do they come back? Can
00:03:48you cover them? Can you? I think
00:03:50I think the competition will
00:03:52move as they can. So if it's if
00:03:54it's not the perfect conditions,
00:03:56maybe they'll delay for a while.
00:03:58Okay, So this is a start list.
00:04:00These are the four nations who
00:04:02will operate. We have China,
00:04:04Mexico, Chinese, Taipei. And our
00:04:06team from Switzerland. And the
00:04:10welcome from the United States.
00:04:12From Switzerland. And the
00:04:15welcomes and the war columns
00:04:17will begin. And there's Mariam
00:04:19Amur, former pentathlon athlete,
00:04:21quite rightly said. In the
00:04:23swimming pool. It doesn't make a
00:04:25huge difference because it's
00:04:27pretty wet in there already.
00:04:29Maybe dry off the blocks a
00:04:31little bit. That's not to slip
00:04:33off. The irony that in the last
00:04:35week, athletes have been putting
00:04:37water on there to keep the blocks
00:04:39cool, which has been a real
00:04:41challenge. But here come the
00:04:43first set of athletes, Mariam.
00:04:45We have the start list and we
00:04:47have the times for our athletes
00:04:49as well. The team from China,
00:04:51Goo and Chen. And the lovely
00:04:55synchronized workout as well. A
00:04:57point to the badge. That was
00:04:59lovely. Love a bit of that.
00:05:01Always like mixed really a lot
00:05:03more relaxed and chill and you
00:05:05have your partner to lean on and
00:05:07you're not alone in this
00:05:09one. And now they come. You're
00:05:11right, Mariam. Look at the
00:05:13smiles. Everybody enjoyed that.
00:05:15Lovely. A bit of a tiger, a bit
00:05:17of a monster. Fierce. Well,
00:05:19quite, yeah. And the team from
00:05:21Chinese Taipei will be hoping
00:05:23that they very much are. Chen
00:05:25and Liao. And have the Swiss got
00:05:27anything in their locker?
00:05:29Holding hands. Wave to the
00:05:31crowd. We'll take that. Well
00:05:33done to Jerts and Muller, who
00:05:35are going to be the first to
00:05:37finish in the semifinals.
00:05:39Jerts and Muller, who are our
00:05:41team from Switzerland. Jerts,
00:05:43one of the athletes who certainly
00:05:45stood out in the women's
00:05:47discipline. Yeah, semifinals.
00:05:49She was incredible, starting in
00:05:5117th and finishing in the top
00:05:53nine and not quite where she
00:05:55wanted to finish in the finals.
00:05:57But, yeah, strong laser in her.
00:05:59Maybe she can overcome this
00:06:01deficit they have, the Swiss
00:06:03team. Mariam, reminders of the
00:06:05format because you swim kind of
00:06:07per gender. So, yeah, it's a
00:06:09total of 200m, 100m per gender.
00:06:11The women get us underway and
00:06:13then it's off to the men's.
00:06:15They hand over. As the women
00:06:17touch the wall, the men can
00:06:19enter the pool.
00:06:23Our athletes then call to their
00:06:25blocks. This is heat one. It's
00:06:27mixed relay. World Championship
00:06:29final time.
00:06:31And all the way without
00:06:33any incidents, all of our athletes
00:06:35and according to the times, we're
00:06:37expecting lane one, the team from
00:06:39China, to
00:06:41be the quickest it would seem, but
00:06:43we will see. It looks like they might
00:06:45be leading out nice and early there
00:06:47as well, Mariam. Yeah, China's
00:06:49looking strong there.
00:06:51Yeah, that is
00:06:53the Chinese Yuwen Gu
00:06:55in the black cap and on the
00:06:57far left of your screen is
00:07:00the Swiss Afit
00:07:02and a Yurt
00:07:04who is in third
00:07:06at the moment.
00:07:08So, China leading.
00:07:10Reminder against the clock here in
00:07:12terms of the points. The points will be
00:07:14deciphered and we will have
00:07:16some kind of start
00:07:18list and time advantage.
00:07:20This is where the Chinese team will
00:07:22touch and Chen will take over
00:07:24for the Chinese and this is the
00:07:26advantage of 100m. It is an
00:07:28aerobic. You can go. You can go and
00:07:30really put it in and leave
00:07:32nothing out there and that's going to be the
00:07:34touch here for Chen to take over
00:07:36and does.
00:07:38Good effective handover
00:07:40and again our athletes, male athletes
00:07:42take to the water. A little bit of a
00:07:44deficit for
00:07:46the team from Chinese Taipei to make up.
00:07:48They are incredible
00:07:50in the pool. I mean, Bai Liang, Chen
00:07:52has taken that lead and run with it.
00:07:54Look at that pace
00:07:56and rhythm from his arms.
00:07:58That's quick. It is.
00:08:00Really quick.
00:08:02Some of the athletes
00:08:04still looking to get out from there.
00:08:06It's too quick. You can't even get out of the water
00:08:08and he's going to win this one.
00:08:10The Chinese team are certainly going to win. They've got a
00:08:12five and a half second lead. Now the lead doesn't particularly
00:08:14matter in this event. It's all against the clock
00:08:16but the Chinese will want to cross the line first.
00:08:18They will want to break the tape and they'll want to
00:08:20get as tight to two and a half minutes
00:08:22as much headroom as they possibly
00:08:24headroom as they possibly can. And make no mistake
00:08:26it's the Chinese who are going to win this one
00:08:28and they're going to win it to the canter.
00:08:30It's going to be a two minute swim
00:08:32under two minutes, sub two minutes swim.
00:08:34And so
00:08:36the Chinese come in in first
00:08:38and the Swiss team on the far side
00:08:40in second
00:08:42six seconds behind. So that's still
00:08:44a 2.06 for them.
00:08:46It's a good swim but the Chinese are standout
00:08:48performers there, Mariam. Yeah, Chinese
00:08:50are leading the way at this point.
00:08:52This is of course the first of three heats
00:08:54and so they're still
00:08:56in the bottom end of things so a lot to make up
00:08:58for and seeing as there's
00:09:00no arriving so no
00:09:02significant disciplines to
00:09:04make up points.
00:09:06But yeah, good swim from them
00:09:08as we get
00:09:10ready to introduce heats two and
00:09:12three and we'll find out where
00:09:14they stand. Yep, the Chinese
00:09:16definitely the standout performers
00:09:18there and that changeover was slick
00:09:20and very effective
00:09:22and the aggression in the forearms and the shoulders
00:09:24of the Chinese athletes.
00:09:26Chen took over and really picked up
00:09:28the baton from Gu who started
00:09:30superbly.
00:09:34The effort and desire from our Chinese team
00:09:36has really laid down a bit of a
00:09:38marker. The next teams in the
00:09:40next heat will
00:09:42do well to get a
00:09:44good sub two in there.
00:09:461.59 and a bit of change.
00:09:48That's the leaderboard
00:09:50at the moment for the mixed relay
00:09:52final here in Zhengzhou.
00:09:57We have a crowd. We have people who
00:09:59are braving the elements today. Good to see.
00:10:01Four teams in
00:10:03the next heat.
00:10:05Heat number two. The team from
00:10:07Kazakhstan, our Italian team,
00:10:09Ukrainian team
00:10:11and Estonian team.
00:10:13Have they worked
00:10:15on their walk-ons as much as they did in heat
00:10:17one, I wonder.
00:10:19Again,
00:10:21big fans of the holding hand
00:10:23wave to the crowd.
00:10:25You can see the difference
00:10:27tonight between male and female athletes.
00:10:33And our Italian team.
00:10:35Fraser and
00:10:37Micheli.
00:10:43Difference for the athletes
00:10:45tonight.
00:10:47A truncated
00:10:49event.
00:10:51They will feel
00:10:53different. It has had to.
00:10:55The rain here is just
00:10:57outrageous.
00:10:59The company was great. You were lovely.
00:11:01The rain was horrendous.
00:11:03It was a bit intense this morning.
00:11:05There was lightning and thunder as well.
00:11:07Maybe not perfect conditions
00:11:09for the horses. They could get scared,
00:11:11spooked off in the arena.
00:11:13It was a bit of a challenge
00:11:15in terms of safety of the athletes.
00:11:17So the heat number
00:11:19two, our team
00:11:21from Kazakhstan
00:11:23statistically
00:11:25are the quickest
00:11:27but they are nowhere near two minutes.
00:11:29It has got to be said.
00:11:31That time from the Chinese.
00:11:33I think it is going to be quicker than their
00:11:35seed times because it is really hard to
00:11:37figure out
00:11:39their cumulative
00:11:42people swimming.
00:11:44You can see the rain splashing
00:11:46off the surface there.
00:11:50And in we go.
00:11:52Expecting lane number one, the lane closest to you
00:11:54to be quickest out. You can see the Ukrainian
00:11:56team in the middle of your picture
00:11:58are certainly keeping pace. It is pretty much neck and neck.
00:12:00Maybe give Ukraine a slight
00:12:02advantage on the female leg
00:12:04of heat number two.
00:12:06But then as we expected, Mariam, lane one,
00:12:08the team from Kazakhstan look to be
00:12:10leading out here.
00:12:14Taking that stroke, it is a strong stroke
00:12:16and then gliding forward
00:12:18to utilize every bit of strength
00:12:20with that quick kick
00:12:22as well, propelling herself forward.
00:12:26So, Potapenko of Kazakhstan
00:12:28leading out and has a bit of a gap
00:12:30here. You have got to say second, third and fourth
00:12:32at the moment are
00:12:34not stroke for stroke but there is not a great
00:12:36deal in it for our teams from Italy,
00:12:38Ukraine and Estonia.
00:12:40But again, this is where the teams really put it in
00:12:42for the changeover, giving everything
00:12:44they possibly can.
00:12:46But there is still fatigue in those shoulders ahead of the
00:12:48laser run they needed for the pistol
00:12:50as our Kazakh team into the pool.
00:12:52Nice big foot splash in there as well
00:12:54from male athletes.
00:12:58And those fuchsia pink shorts were on the discount
00:13:00Mariam because a few of the boys have got them.
00:13:02Yeah.
00:13:04And
00:13:06Kazakhstan is leading the way but I think
00:13:08Ukraine might be closing in now.
00:13:10They are getting closer.
00:13:12Kovalchuk, the male
00:13:14Ukrainian athlete
00:13:16who is trying to close
00:13:18that gap in.
00:13:20It is going to be slower than the first
00:13:22heat.
00:13:24You are quite right Mariam, the lane
00:13:26number three, Kovalchuk
00:13:28is closing in, whether a catch or not.
00:13:30Again, it is against the clock so it does not matter
00:13:32overly. Italy as well.
00:13:34Side by side now.
00:13:36But I think Kazakhstan is going to
00:13:38touch that wall first.
00:13:40You would think so but lane number three
00:13:42Ukraine on a million miles away.
00:13:44Again, let's all eyes on the clock. It is quicker.
00:13:461.58. I did not think it was going to be
00:13:48quicker. It is.
00:13:50It is impressive from the Kazakhstan team.
00:13:52Yeah, very much so.
00:13:54I think it was a 1.02
00:13:56from Potapenko. So it was a quick
00:13:58100 meters from her and
00:14:00Verutachkin with
00:14:02a sub one minute
00:14:04time.
00:14:08So heat number one and heat number two
00:14:10concluded
00:14:12for our athletes.
00:14:18They had a bit of a lead, didn't they
00:14:20going into the change over the team from
00:14:22Kazakhstan?
00:14:26I am trying to take a look at the scores
00:14:28now. We of course have one more
00:14:30heat to go.
00:14:32But concerning the
00:14:34ranking round, I don't think that
00:14:36there was much of a gap between the
00:14:38teams.
00:14:44So that's the leaderboard
00:14:46as it stands. But actually
00:14:48Egypt
00:14:50the Czechs and Korean
00:14:52teams
00:14:54even the Polish team very close.
00:14:56A bit of a lead for Lithuania at the start
00:14:58of the swimming. And we have those teams coming
00:15:00into the pool now.
00:15:02Again, they'll have seen that time. I should
00:15:04point out as well ahead of the laser run, and we will
00:15:06discuss it probably a little nearer.
00:15:08It's still very, very humid. Don't let the rain
00:15:10deceive you. I actually looked at the humidity
00:15:12earlier. It was 86%.
00:15:14I think maybe the rain might
00:15:16increase the humidity as well.
00:15:18So our team
00:15:20from Lithuania, Adamantite
00:15:22and Peronas
00:15:24are leaders heading into the pool.
00:15:26So we've had the ranking and the bonus fencing rounds
00:15:28without the horses because
00:15:30of the weather conditions.
00:15:32But out come our leaders at the moment. Remember World
00:15:34Championship medals up for grabs here.
00:15:38The Polish team
00:15:42certainly look ready for action.
00:15:50It's a strong Korean team
00:15:52Marian, when we were looking at the team entries
00:15:54I think last night the first thing
00:15:56you said was look at the strength of that Korean team.
00:15:58Yes, Seo and Sunwoo Kim too
00:16:00happy to always be in the top
00:16:0210 of every final.
00:16:04Seo wasn't his day yesterday in the finals
00:16:06with that ride. It was I think a
00:16:082.38 from him.
00:16:10But yeah, I think he's
00:16:12looking for a medal here.
00:16:14In come the Egyptian team.
00:16:20And now Gendy.
00:16:23They're matching swimsuits.
00:16:25That is cute.
00:16:27I like that.
00:16:29Fashion points go to the Egyptian team
00:16:31certainly.
00:16:33But unfortunately
00:16:35they don't get added to your laser on total I'm afraid.
00:16:39That's a good turtle based swimsuit in the middle as well isn't it.
00:16:41So our athletes
00:16:43preparing themselves then
00:16:47for heat number
00:16:49three.
00:16:53Yeah, Lithuania, Poland, Korea
00:16:55Czech Republic and Egypt
00:16:57are top five teams
00:16:59as things stand.
00:17:01Athletes and female athletes call to
00:17:03their blocks. The team in
00:17:05lane number one is the team from
00:17:07Lithuania and they
00:17:11are the team who are in the lead
00:17:13at the moment. It's a bit deceiving because they usually
00:17:15wear that green colour and that's the same colour
00:17:17as the Koreans in lane three but
00:17:19Celebi
00:17:21Let's see how they play out here
00:17:23with a five team heat.
00:17:25It looks like Malek Ismail
00:17:27has turned first on the wall.
00:17:29Things are going to be clear at that 50
00:17:31metre mark but this is considerably
00:17:33faster than they would do in their own
00:17:35individuals. It's an all out sprint
00:17:37this 100 metres. Looks like lane
00:17:39five and four doesn't it. Looks like Egypt
00:17:41in the checks.
00:17:43First and second and it's quick.
00:17:45Maybe
00:17:47exactly one minute
00:17:49for
00:17:51Malek Ismail.
00:17:53Good strong turn
00:17:55as well. You saw the kinetic energy in that.
00:17:57That was perfectly timed from the Egyptian
00:17:59team out there in lane number five.
00:18:01Like a spring recoiling.
00:18:03Perfect wasn't it.
00:18:05She's really putting the effort in here. This is
00:18:07quick. This is going to be really quick.
00:18:11And
00:18:13into
00:18:15the pool go our
00:18:17male athletes.
00:18:21And for Egypt
00:18:25Mohamed El Gendy has
00:18:27a bit of a lead.
00:18:29Certainly no slouch in the pool.
00:18:33It is looking quick out
00:18:35there and I think these three teams are
00:18:37clumping up together now
00:18:39as they head to the wall and it might not be Mohamed
00:18:41El Gendy for Egypt.
00:18:43It's going to make a huge difference.
00:18:45First it is a sale.
00:18:47Not too much in it
00:18:49though. Pretty much neck and neck.
00:18:51This is the final of the three heats
00:18:53before we head to the laser run.
00:18:55The final turn now for these athletes
00:18:57and I think that the Czech Republic
00:18:59are in first place now.
00:19:01Korea in second and Mohamed El Gendy
00:19:03for Egypt dropped down into third.
00:19:05Let's check the clock and see how close it is.
00:19:07Whether it's going to make a huge difference
00:19:09for the Koreans. It seems it could be close
00:19:11between them. It is.
00:19:13Korea in first, the Czech team
00:19:15and the Egyptian team. 158-88
00:19:17Mariam Amur. Who were the
00:19:19success stories in the pool?
00:19:23Well China in that first heat
00:19:25was actually pretty quick maybe.
00:19:27They made up some time after that swim.
00:19:29Seo and
00:19:31Kuf made
00:19:33I think quite a bit of a lead
00:19:35on the rest of the pack.
00:19:37I think the big one
00:19:39for me here is Lithuania.
00:19:41They started out in first. They might be
00:19:43losing a bit of that gap if
00:19:45not dropping down the order after that swim.
00:19:51So our Korean
00:19:53team
00:19:55impressive in their heat.
00:19:57Yeah.
00:20:05It's really interesting. I've never
00:20:07seen the transition
00:20:09from just the swim to the laser
00:20:11and obviously there's
00:20:13no riding. So it's kind of
00:20:15like qualifications almost.
00:20:17Yeah, it usually builds
00:20:19to a crescendo, doesn't it?
00:20:21It feels like we've
00:20:23just moved from one discipline
00:20:25to another. Yeah, which essentially we have
00:20:27and it's going to be laser run next up because the
00:20:29fencing bonus round took
00:20:31place away from the arena. It's normally
00:20:33and that's the allure of modern
00:20:35pentathlon these days. It's all in one arena.
00:20:37It's 90 minutes. It's condensed. It's
00:20:39you know, harem, scarem. It's where do you look? Where's the action?
00:20:41But that couldn't happen today because of the
00:20:43conditions so. You have to adapt.
00:20:45Yep.
00:20:47Here we go then. This is
00:20:49the table
00:20:51heading in to the
00:20:53laser run. Korea will lead us
00:20:55out with a tiny
00:20:57tiny advantage over Lithuania
00:20:59and the Czech Republic. Couple of seconds
00:21:01in that a piece there, Mariam.
00:21:03Not too much in it. Not too much
00:21:05in it. I mean, 25 seconds separate
00:21:07first and ninth.
00:21:09I think Egypt in with a chance.
00:21:11Kazakhstan with a chance. Czech Republic
00:21:13and Lithuania all good runners as
00:21:15well. And Korea, you
00:21:17have to think maybe
00:21:19keep that place in
00:21:21first. But again, the gaps are
00:21:23pretty tiny between those athletes.
00:21:25And
00:21:27further down, 10th, 11th, 12th
00:21:29and 13th. Estonia,
00:21:31Taipei, Mexico and Switzerland.
00:21:33Yep. So our athletes have completed
00:21:35the swimming discipline. Laser run is up next.
00:21:37Let's reflect on their time in the pool.
00:21:51Yeah.
00:21:53Yeah.
00:21:55Yeah.
00:21:57Yeah.
00:21:59Yeah.
00:22:01Yeah.
00:22:03Yeah.
00:22:05Yeah.
00:22:07Yeah.
00:22:09Yeah.
00:22:11Yeah.
00:22:13Yeah.
00:22:15Yeah.
00:22:17Yeah.
00:22:20Yeah.
00:22:22Yeah.
00:22:24Yeah.
00:22:26So swimming complete.
00:22:28Our athletes will make the move
00:22:30and the transition
00:22:32from the swimming arena and the swimming
00:22:34pool to
00:22:36the Laser Run.
00:22:38Let me finish it. So handicap
00:22:39starter reminder. So whoever you see first
00:22:41the line in Modern Pentathlon, they are the
00:22:43gold medalist, silver medalist and bronze
00:22:45medalist respectively. Into
00:22:47per gender a couple of trips to this 10 meters of five targets to hit in 50 seconds or less
00:22:54and the course is adapted so the minute it looks like it goes through the riding arena it doesn't
00:22:58it will go to the right hand side clockwise around that turn there's a an out and back
00:23:04essentially to then go back and complete the rest of the the rest of the course but Mariam
00:23:09you were just saying to me a few moments ago that the lack of riding is going to mean a more
00:23:13congested field very congested add to that the water on the track which there is we can't hide
00:23:18it's gonna be drama yeah there is gonna be drama today in mixed three days which i don't think
00:23:23we've had in such a long time maybe we've had some scraps for finishes in those uh top metal
00:23:29positions but now i think we have all nine athletes uh sorry nine teams uh fighting for
00:23:35those uh positions and tell me when you're an athlete how much the rain affects shooting and
00:23:42why i think whenever there's a competition where we expect rain there's something usually over the
00:23:50arena or over the range to keep the pistols covered so i'm actually not really sure what's
00:23:56gonna happen probably they're gonna be using that umbrella until that last second they want
00:24:00to make sure that their pistols are are clean and dry before the start of the race even if they do
00:24:05get a little bit wet in the actual race it's uh it's important to keep them out of the water as
00:24:11much as they can and they are the timing chips i believe i'm gonna see a lot of water spring as
00:24:17they head around the track that's for sure they are the timing chips that the athletes will wear
00:24:22on their on their ankle that was a test of the starting horn that you just heard in case it
00:24:28doesn't work and then it doesn't work yeah it was tested this morning who tested it mariam um
00:24:35uh i don't know i do so our athletes just going through their preparation you just saw the timing
00:24:43chips a few moments ago there is the laser pistol and they need to keep that dry now they can keep
00:24:49it dry for now because their coaches will be able to hold an umbrella over it and it will although
00:24:55saying that you can still see a few spots that's an easier way to keep it dry close the case close
00:25:00the case if you're out of the range and if you're in the range keep an umbrella overhead yep
00:25:07so they are our korean team favorites for gold at the moment korea
00:25:16korea and then
00:25:19interesting that our athletes uh you can see some k tape on the back there not necessarily
00:25:27indicating an injury no it's not it just helps blood flow helps blood flow and helps support
00:25:31your muscles um sometimes you feel like you've got a little cramping about to happen just want to
00:25:38make sure that doesn't and uh team from italy frezza on your screen just getting used to the
00:25:44track and that will be a challenge being on a wet track spikes will be needed so the italian team
00:25:54will start in eighth that's 15 seconds off the lead so basically nothing podium is more than
00:26:01achievable potentially even gold from down there at eight would you say i say all the way to ninth
00:26:06is uh just to get shot all the way down to ninth is only again separated by 25 seconds
00:26:13but realistically speaking i think korea lithuania czech republic and egypt are going to be
00:26:23the four teams essentially on the podium
00:26:27so the korean team will certainly be there or thereabouts as it were you would expect them to be
00:26:34anyway yeah they had a good day yesterday in the finals we had sung ming sung take that gold and
00:26:44in a dramatic manner has to be said uh joan wong tai with that bronze at the final shooting was uh
00:26:51was incredible for me it was a seven second shoot and came out of the range and third
00:26:55and finished the race in third 12 minutes then until the start of the laser on we'll try and
00:27:00show you the uh start list graphic once more before we uh before we do get underway but
00:27:05our athletes i'll tell you what if 48 hours ago you'd have said to our athletes you're going to
00:27:08need jackets to warm up what's the jackets are you mad no chance but uh that's certainly the case
00:27:15today and it is a change and it uh it is going to affect our athletes for sure and i think the
00:27:22big thing for me is uh is the running track curious to see how they make their way around
00:27:29that backside of the uh of the shooting range especially because it is very tight and if there's
00:27:35multiple teams heading into that tight turn together it's going to be uh maybe a bit dangerous
00:27:40the part you're talking about mariam and it's difficult to see from where that camera is i'm
00:27:44sure we'll try and show it before if we can but the so when the athletes come out of the range
00:27:49so essentially heading towards the camera you can see they will come out and they'll turn left but
00:27:55it's an immediate right so it's a horseshoe and i'm going to give it two three four five six paces
00:28:02i think from when you turn left out of the range it's six paces until a
00:28:07and 180 degree turn and then maybe 100 meters out and back and another 180 degree turn
00:28:15and then you're back around the course and back through to the start finish so
00:28:20so they're not doing the riding but they're kind of doing the riding course aren't they
00:28:24tight turns yeah that's true the egyptian team we just saw um muhammad al-gandhi there starting in
00:28:33six ten
00:28:38ten seconds behind
00:28:43yeah it's ten seconds behind for the egyptian team is i think very very doable
00:28:48and don't write off um veronica and volkan yankov for czech republic
00:28:53you can see the athletes there that's
00:28:57the
00:29:03the athletes having to
00:29:08bless me uh wipe down their wipe down their uh their pistol area it's just
00:29:16there's a lot in it mariam there's a lot in it as well for the coaches because as a coach for
00:29:20the last seven days you've been right it's going to be hot it's going to be humid let's talk about
00:29:23water let's talk about ice vests let's talk about rehydration electrolytes and in less than 24 hours
00:29:29like we woke up this morning and it was it was apocalyptic so the coach it was wasn't it
00:29:34look at all but it's like thunder and lightning was going on but the coaches have got to change
00:29:38as well because their advice is going to change yeah well in terms of conditions maybe your
00:29:43strategy in terms of conditions yeah that's for sure and um i think it's all about taking it easy
00:29:49on those turns to be honest because that's what i'm worried about i think the athletes will manage
00:29:53fine even in the range um again it's a bit different because uh the shooting pistols
00:29:58i'd say five six years ago were air pistols and now they're all based on electronics and
00:30:04yeah that's quite different and humidity and moisture does affect that so hopefully no issues
00:30:12with our outfits today mexico on your screen by the way yep the mexican team are going to be
00:30:19starting you know what they're in 13th but they're 41 seconds i don't know go on say it you're dying
00:30:25to say it say it they might work their way to i'm not gonna say podium positions but they're
00:30:32gonna work their way up okay yeah no that's fair that's fair and we'll see whether they do work
00:30:36their way up they're starting alongside the swiss team as well on 41 behind so they've got somebody
00:30:41instantly chasing them down or they are chasing yeah and again remember they're only three times
00:30:48600 meters per gender so it's going to be substantially quicker than the individuals
00:30:53yes and they can put more effort in with that in mind
00:31:00the coach's best job at the moment is to hold an umbrella or somebody from within the coaching
00:31:04staff should i say hold the umbrella and make sure you keep everything that jacket's on backwards
00:31:10is that the swimming goggles the mexican hands up no sorry it looked like it looked like it for a
00:31:16second from the back it did look like it though the mexican athletes then macias and oliver 41
00:31:24seconds behind macias was uh if you remember him by the way laser run uh senior finals he did that
00:31:31uh incredible finish at the end came in third yes yes yeah of course what a day that was yes that
00:31:38was laser run laser yeah it all molds into one man yeah been a long time here for the athletes
00:31:47been a long time here for the supporters a long time here for the teams as well
00:31:54but uh everyone's enjoyed it everybody's had fun 52 nations incidentally 52 nations represented
00:32:01across six continents more than 700 athletes have been through this stadium in the last 10 days
00:32:06mm-hmm so it has hosted quite the competition this olympic stadium here in zhang jiao and
00:32:13they've done it in style the organization has been incredible volunteers staff local committee
00:32:19and uh have you enjoyed zhang jiao i have yeah it's been a very interesting city very different
00:32:25than uh where previous world championships have been held and yeah the culture and food we've
00:32:32been able to try some of that and it's uh yeah it is incredible to be honest the athletes and
00:32:39teams have been looked after that's for sure as have we and we're tremendously thankful for that
00:32:44spikes are the only option today frankly i think that's that's spikes or spikes spikes or spikes
00:32:50yeah yeah they uh usually opt for that uh carbon shoes that like you said but now everything
00:32:58everyone i think is moving with spikes most of the athletes yeah like it will we will definitely
00:33:03be on they need that grip they need that grip if you're not on spikes i'd be shocked if anybody's
00:33:08not wearing spikes today we will be on spike watch see what we can come up with
00:33:16good to see our teams from around the world they are spikes indeed good excellent camera work by
00:33:22the way yeah team from poland is um is in fourth place they are not
00:33:33estonia they didn't look like they had spiked shoes on
00:33:37shoe watch everybody tune in same time next week for more shoe watch james adedakis is track side
00:33:43with an interview james yeah so this is a bit of an unorthodox interview with you as you're just
00:33:48finishing off the final touches helping your athletes out here we won't keep you for too long
00:33:52uh the top six are separated by such a small margin obviously it's been a little bit of a
00:33:57different uh mixed relay here today hasn't it but just explain to us about what's happened today and
00:34:02then how tight it's going to be whilst you're obviously helping out malak as well actually so
00:34:06as you can as you as you see we had a slight change in the weather from having like uh very
00:34:13very hot warm i would say egyptian weather as i'm coming from egypt to what we are experiencing
00:34:19now we had to cancel the riding which is something that happened in in any sport when the condition
00:34:24is abnormal because of this the gaps is really small this is going to give us a very exciting
00:34:30race enjoyable one you cannot predict who's going to win because we are talking about 10 seconds gap
00:34:36as you said in between the top six going to be enjoyable so maybe maybe the removal of riding
00:34:42in this one would give the laser run a better taste yeah i'm not gonna keep it much longer
00:34:48because i know you've got a lot to do before the race starts but this is quite unique isn't it this
00:34:52is quite a special laser run i don't think we've ever seen the top six separated by such a small
00:34:57margin this could be a real special race i haven't seen something like this uh in the mixed relays or
00:35:03even it's very rare in the individual finals it's gonna be special it's the last day some nations
00:35:10haven't got the results they expected in the individual egypt is upon them so hopefully this
00:35:16one is gonna be is gonna be uh one to satisfy satisfy those nations all right yeah so get back
00:35:22to work good luck my friend thank you for your time as always thank you very much enjoy thank you
00:35:28really good points there actually the points that were raised marion were an opportunity
00:35:35for nations who have struggled a bit to get some momentum back as you see the start list and
00:35:41the uh differentials between the start list yeah a lot of these athletes who are competing in the
00:35:46team relay mix have either not made it to the finals or have struggled in one way or another
00:35:53maybe even not competing in the individuals at all so it's good to see them out here and
00:35:59trying for a podium finish adamaititi for example wasn't in the finals as well as
00:36:05mohammed gindi and permakina so we are excited for this one 10 seconds to separate the top six
00:36:12athletes so you can see the start list there our korean team will go out first they have a lead of
00:36:17two seconds which is nothing at this stage going in uh to the first turn four seconds seven seconds
00:36:25eight seconds as james said 10 seconds look at six the egyptian team 10 seconds in a laser run
00:36:30is nothing 15th follows and if we have a look at the second page from here on in ninth is uh 25
00:36:39seconds in there so that's first to ninth and our 10th place team marion you've already made the
00:36:45point is the same 40 41 and 41 and we know that in the range all it takes is for target two to be
00:36:53missed twice three times talking about that actually yesterday men's final last shooting
00:36:59series mutas mohammed was in the range in third and he didn't shoot terribly it was a 13 second
00:37:05shoot but jung woong thai was so much faster it was a seven second shoot so that's essentially
00:37:09double the time and that's what separated bronze from fourth place yep there we go there's some
00:37:17more footwear which we particularly enjoy spikes are plenty because you can see it is still raining
00:37:23you might be able to see from that shot that the puddles are still being hit by some of the
00:37:27overhead conditions here in zhang jiao in china it's certainly a little more like the weather in
00:37:32estonia but um not quite yeah with my tt in your shot again did not make it to the finals and some
00:37:43of these athletes not only did they not make it to the finals but uh have their dreams olympic
00:37:48dreams uh taken away from them um a lot of olympic hopefuls and uh came here to jang jao to
00:37:56try for a qualification spot but were unable to i think they'd like to walk away with a medal
00:38:02look how still that arm was from so
00:38:08still not moving our athletes
00:38:13just about ready was there a minute or so left a minute or so to go
00:38:16look doesn't move a muscle look perfect time he's gonna walk away now thank you
00:38:22called the curse of the commentator kids so it works our athletes then mixed relay final is
00:38:29imminent because of the riding and the conditions in the riding being a bit of a problem it is a
00:38:35truncated event meaning this laser on is gonna be good it's gonna be tight it's gonna be congested
00:38:41it's gonna be this way in that way and the medals will change hands i would imagine a few times
00:38:48yeah we're gonna be back and forth with these athletes till the finish line
00:38:52our team from kazakhstan were leading the way actually uh uh no sorry that was um lithuania
00:38:58were leading the way weren't they kazakhstan and nepal were were pretty strong and the egyptian
00:39:02team mariam as an impartial but proud egyptian they quite rightly from the coach that was that
00:39:09was a message from the coach say kind of underperformed as a nation a bit here individually
00:39:13we need to get a medal that was basically what he was saying to be honest i think i think the
00:39:18egyptians for some reason this competition have had bad luck we've had two top competitors ahmad
00:39:22against him on it shaban withdrawn from the competition due to injury and then mutas mohammed
00:39:27yesterday almost in bronze and finished in fourth and some of the most who was just on the line in
00:39:32third and then fell right before that finish line and again in fourth so it was like
00:39:39nothing was going their way this competition so again a medal here would be a big win for egypt
00:39:44yep and they will uh know that the playing field is level for all of them as well in terms of the
00:39:50conditions that's the one thing you can say is yes the rain's difficult it's troubling it's
00:39:54a challenge but it's the same for every athlete out there so we shall see the start of the laser
00:39:59on 2024 mixed relay is imminent we start in 60 seconds time one thing i will say maybe the
00:40:07conditions the past few days have been okay for some of the athletes such as the egyptians as
00:40:14for some of the the athletes coming from colder regions maybe today is their day maybe today is
00:40:20their favorable conditions the swiss maybe the estonians it will certainly be a lot more used
00:40:28to conditions like this so 30 seconds to go until the final event here in zhang jiao
00:40:36but it's an event where medals are up for grabs and these athletes make no mistake are desperate
00:40:42for those medals it's the mixed relay final here in the east of china and with a slender lead
00:40:49our korean team will head out because of the truncated nature of the start
00:40:55this is going to be close strap yourselves in folks
00:40:57and the way we go could that be a false start from lithuania there could be a penalty there maria
00:41:08this is uh where you want to start considering the gaps in this uh race but you can see marcus
00:41:15mayo now off of that line in sixth place seven and eight are out as well so there could be a
00:41:24penalty for lithuania adamantiti broke the line somewhat there and you're seeing all of the
00:41:30athletes off the line desperate to go desperate to catch desperate to chase they're having to
00:41:35wait their 41 seconds and that's the race at the moment for ninth and tenth and away they go the
00:41:43swiss team are out and the mexican team are out so we have all our athletes on track and that turn
00:41:49mariam just seen the turn down in front of us the turn that's been added is really tight
00:41:56it has to be that they can't do anything about it in that turn but again it's on all of the athletes
00:42:01so pretty much a level playing field and first place for korea you can see in your way you can
00:42:08see in your shot there it is pulling away there's a six second lead they started out with a two
00:42:13second lead the korean team now is there going to be a penalty on the line for the lithuanian team
00:42:19the two places have been gained by egypt already egypt up into fourth and can see on the back
00:42:26straight actually it's a good move it's a move they've made stick have the egyptian team with
00:42:35malik ismail but here come korea navarro overtaking lithuania by the way so
00:42:41czech republic is now in second the lithuania is in third
00:42:47yeah so the korean team are in the lead
00:42:53yeah they're gonna head now to their first shooting series and it's
00:42:57actually second place lithuania and czech republic pretty much together
00:43:04so into the range they go for the first time korea
00:43:08will head in first the team in second are the czech team as they head into the range all
00:43:15important range lithuania head in the team the czech team head in in go korea and there's a
00:43:23miss of the first target lithuania hit first time lithuania ahead now and korea making up
00:43:30the czech team a little behind lithuania might come out first here you know they may well come
00:43:33out first if this one is made to stick it is they're out at the same time korea first by less
00:43:38than a second second place are lithuania around these tight turns now keep your eyes on these
00:43:43turns because they are tight they're difficult for the athletes and you'll be able to suss out
00:43:47ahead of the next lap or two where the passing opportunities are look at the czech republic in
00:43:53the range and struggling ukraine might overtake them they're like 32 seconds egypt by the way
00:44:01third yep right away and shooting and not too far away from second may i say
00:44:09and uh kim is uh is trying to put in the pace now but uh my tt's keeping
00:44:16on her tail she is so lithuania in second korea in first and that is the distance
00:44:22you can see you can see the back of your shot there egypt making their way into third position
00:44:28and the team from poland are in fourth which is where they started the day
00:44:34korea in first as they ran the or head into the turn the turn for home as it were
00:44:43and if you ain't right on the shoulder mariam yeah i think she's keeping pace now not wanting
00:44:48to burn off too much energy at this stage there's one more shooting series to go before the last
00:44:54stop and handing over to their partners and uh you don't want to increase that heart rate too
00:44:59much going into the range so here come our leaders and lithuania behind korea lithuania
00:45:05look like they might fancy an overtake here on the inside lithuania right behind there's nothing in it
00:45:13into the range for the second time korea will head into the range in first place it would seem
00:45:19egypt in third but narrowly in third i've got to say poland in fourth and not a million miles away
00:45:27so korea into the range lithuania into the range yeah who holds their own in there that is the
00:45:33question and they pick up their laser pistols at exactly the same time it's all on the range
00:45:40korea hit number one hit number two lithuania struggling somewhat hit number one korea three
00:45:45down now four down now it's going to be quick income egypt 8.95 korea are out egypt could come
00:45:51out second here i think they're going to poland behind indeed and it could come out all of them
00:45:58together 11 seconds out come egypt out come lithuania lithuania is second egypt in third
00:46:02but it's tight the biggest advantage in the second trip to the range mariam amur was for the leaders
00:46:08korea yeah korea now pulling away from the rest of the pack in egypt getting closer to that second
00:46:14place medal in that silver medal but lithuania is really pushing here but korea is miles and
00:46:21miles ahead of them so here come that's the scrap for second you can see the elbow running elbows
00:46:29pumping of the lithuanian athlete adamatiti is trying to catch korea in first but quite frankly
00:46:37that second trip to the range was outstanding now can egypt take that place there's an opportunity
00:46:43on this patch straight for silver and bronze and indeed she's going to try and take it she wants to
00:46:50hand over to her male partner in silver medal and say right i've given you silver you can keep it
00:46:56and they're both this is going to go down to the finish line between those two but malika
00:47:00smile i think is making her way around the outside of the lithuanian and she is gritting her teeth as
00:47:07well the lithuanian there's a chance here for egypt you know if they can spray the rest of the
00:47:12fuel into the tank this will be it for their week then if they can make this silver play stick at
00:47:17the transition they'll give a real chance to mohammed el-gendi here come korea for the hand
00:47:23over the handover successful and away he goes seo for korea will do a lap without the pistol first
00:47:31in and egypt in second yeah el-gendi and peronis at second and third peronis with those long levers
00:47:39as you say yeah he has and they help certainly help but i know who my money would be on if we
00:47:45were able to that would be the egyptian athlete because as the coach told us there's a fire in
00:47:50their belly they want to go home as a team with more medals if they can that turn is tough on
00:47:55the athletes it's tough for all of them but it's tough so korea out leading seo for korea with that
00:48:03turn and they are stride for stride are the egyptians not opting for the uh spikes here and
00:48:10i think that's not gonna be in his best interest it's uh it's hard to grip on this uh slippery
00:48:16slope that we have here in zhang zhao yeah and they're trying to hunt down first i'm not sure
00:48:21they're going to get anywhere near the korean team who've been in imperious form they have over the
00:48:26course of the weekend and they have shown ahead of a trip to paris in a couple of months that they
00:48:30are the ones to potentially catch the egyptian team no they've got themselves under pressure and
00:48:35lithuania here have made a move and have made it stick and the silver medal at the moment belongs
00:48:41to the lithuanian team as they head to the range for the first time maria mamoon yeah heading to
00:48:47the range for the first time and again as you said the range does separate the boys from the men
00:48:53and peronis and mohammed akinzi while peronis is taking quite the lead in second place i don't
00:49:01think there's too much of a gap as they head to the first shooting series that's where it's going
00:49:05to be important sayo heads in for korea as lithuania in second and i don't think gold secured
00:49:13yeah you don't okay i think those two have a chance of really closing in now al candy
00:49:20let's just the straight approach the running pose and posture of seo's impressive and up he goes
00:49:27can he keep pace he's missed his first target he gets it second time
00:49:31income lithuania income egypt the two targets are down now misses the third and egypt hit one they
00:49:38hit two if they hit three we've got a serious race career a four down and they miss five egypt
00:49:44come come out first they do egypt in the lead here the first trip to the range and the egyptian team
00:49:50currently have gold a long way to go mariam yeah a long way to go two more laps and one more
00:49:56shooting series sale is closing on mohammed akinzi again those tight turns are really difficult for
00:50:01mohammed in those specific shoes i'm surprised i am surprised this is a difficult bit for him
00:50:08getting around there you see he's got no purchase there and he's overtaken sayo takes the place and
00:50:13korea take the place the important thing here though mariam is that gap is rewrite as nothing
00:50:18yeah it is nothing i think mohammed is trying to stay behind sales trying to keep pace because he
00:50:24knows if he's leading the way i think they might get tripped out on the turns especially so lithuania
00:50:31are in third we're staying with the battle for gold and silver quite rightly but in the back of
00:50:35your picture just then there you go there's a lithuanian team i think with poland and behind
00:50:39them in fourth but it's close between gold and silver korea and egypt as they head in towards
00:50:47the bend for the penultimate time that's that's a quarter of a second they are look how close they
00:50:53are to the advertising holdings seo is calm personified yeah no facial expression nothing
00:51:00nothing i don't want to play poker against him i'll tell you that i think mohammed again is gonna
00:51:05go for an overtake here maybe i think you'll we'll see we'll see you might be right but i think uh
00:51:12given how well he shot if i were him back myself in the range come out first and put the hammer
00:51:17down yeah as they enter the range as well as getting closer to those two if they head to the
00:51:22final shooting series this is it this is it who shoots best here probably get on the plane tomorrow
00:51:30with a gold medal around the neck and they know it korea head in egypt head in all on the range
00:51:35here we go mixed relay medals and gold medal on the line korea one down two down egypt two down
00:51:43korea three down egypt three down it's close they're missing and hitting at the same time
00:51:48four repeats five and out come egypt egypt have got a lead of about a second and it's with el
00:51:52gendy can he keep it can he hold it the korean team lose the hat look at this this is going to
00:51:58be a scrap folks strap yourselves in outcome lithuania in third that bronze medal isn't
00:52:05secure incidentally if it's uh there's jeopardy amongst that we will focus on it but this is a
00:52:10race for gold can elgeny get around there he does and now he tries to put a move on but here you go
00:52:16the korean team this is where they're going to try and pull out look at seo go that's going to be
00:52:21tough to keep up with mariam that is look at wow look at the rhythm and tempo and his feet but
00:52:27muhammad is trying to keep pace with him i think sales opening up slightly slightly just opening
00:52:34it up but actually now it's getting it's getting bigger that is a big gap now the korean team and
00:52:39say oh this is outstanding running from the korean team they had no gap coming out of the
00:52:46range in fact they were half a second maybe a fraction behind but seo has broken the egyptian
00:52:53team the korean team have been outstanding in the last couple of days and they will take gold
00:53:00in the mixed relay seo for korea sprinting away into the last 20 meters he will secure gold and
00:53:07it is a golden day for korea the silver medal will go to egypt a huge effort from them and bronze is
00:53:15secure for lithuania in they come and across the line there's the bronze medal your gold silver
00:53:22and bronze athletes in the mixed relay 2024 dare i say the medal positions could be highly influenced
00:53:30by footwear in this competition i really really think that gripping was the most important factor
00:53:37today but korea was absolutely outstanding in that race china is finishing in fifth place
00:53:46huge congratulations to all of our athletes over the line again they are spent
00:53:51after that laser and you can see the effort that they put in remember when we saw them
00:53:54walking up and i said they don't look like spikes they were yellow it was el guendy's
00:54:02yeah but i think it's a good comeback from egypt though with no medals yeah they were
00:54:08really good in the range it was incredible but uh led just led in the last lap out of the range
00:54:14he led normally i'd say muhammad against you would win but again that footwear i think was uh was
00:54:18crucial for this race yeah it was uh i think is he is top of the laser run in terms of time wise
00:54:28speed wise and our final athletes estonia in fact beg your pardon penultimate athlete estonian team
00:54:35will come over the line we'll get a round of applause lovely embrace between the egyptian
00:54:39and the korean teams and again for the uninitiated mariam spikes versus carbon shoes on a wet track
00:54:46what's the difference yeah that's like using dry versus wet tires in formula one
00:54:51basically you need that grip you need to be able to take those turns um while not breaking
00:54:58very very abruptly like muhammad against you that he really took his time on the turns and it was
00:55:04uh it was kind of slippery it was uh shaky um so yeah so there we have our spent athletes i'll leave
00:55:15you any and team came in third second place went to egypt and the gold medalists are korea word on
00:55:21korean the korean team and their performances in the last few days what can you say about korea they
00:55:26are dominant they are consistent they are just all-around incredible as uh as athletes and i think
00:55:34heading into the olympic games they are a definite threat
00:55:38so the korean team start to finish look like a uh false start but in fairness lithuania they went
00:55:44back to the line so there was no advantage gained but they did break the start line a little bit and
00:55:49uh korea with kim yes i know kim gave us a quite the lead so that might have been the difference
00:55:58between gold and silver for them she shot brilliantly ran really well and uh yeah gave him
00:56:04that gap he needed to finish things off for gold and he did but my goodness me was it close was it
00:56:12tight the range was insane especially with the men's lithuania dropped out of that battle for
00:56:18gold and silver after that first shooting series in terms of the men and you can see almost going
00:56:26athletes keeping their pistols dry the korean athletes heading out first ahead of the transition
00:56:34and uh someone kim certainly did her job that's for sure and again
00:56:38spent everything there's a touch a finger touch will do anything will do an effective
00:56:45touch i'll tell you what it was close to not being an effective touch but it was close
00:56:52it was close to not being an effective touch but effective it certainly was
00:56:57and mariam it was all down to seo from here on in yeah and seo is uh you can see there was a
00:57:02trip up from how they're gonna be coming out of the range but again under normal conditions i'd
00:57:08have to favor the egyptians but again with the with the weather conditions we've been seeing today
00:57:13and that quick shoe switch up it's look at that he's out in the lead the egyptian team off goes
00:57:20the cap he's out in the lead but has he got no he's not got spikes definitely their carbons without
00:57:26doubt it's significant and we talk about one percent as a korean team break the tape and break
00:57:32the line and secure gold and look at that that's the best sight in sport elation at the line and
00:57:39gold to korea vengeance after that ride yesterday yeah again it was silver it's a silver medal
00:57:46congratulations to them because a reminder they started out in sixth yeah yeah but again the gaps
00:57:52were pretty tightened to be able to pull off a lead um the korean team was uh was just insane and
00:57:58the egyptian team got closer to it but yeah the korean team were on fire this competition they
00:58:06were outstanding here is a classified result then for the mixed relay korea with your gold medal
00:58:12silver goes to egypt bronze to the team from lithuania yeah kazakhstan missing out poland
00:58:19missing out and china ukraine mexico mexico so mexico actually started in 13th finished up in
00:58:26eighth so we said they're going to move up but not um it wasn't that significant for them so in the
00:58:34men's event june with a bronze for korea songmin song with a gold in the women's event and a gold
00:58:42in the mixed relay who's had the better week in the hungarian or the korean team for sure hungarians
00:58:49i mean both of them were were the ones to watch this competition they've had
00:58:54medalists in both the men's and women's events james zanadakis is trackside with some reaction
00:59:00well done congratulations it's a bronze medal for lithuania here at the world championships
00:59:08a well-earned bronze medal on a strange day because obviously things have had to be reshuffled
00:59:12a bit today talk to us about what it was like as an athlete sort of having to work around these
00:59:16these changing conditions not easy is it i think it helped i think it uh like brought our mind not
00:59:22into the competition more into just that moment so we didn't think about you know the time or
00:59:26anything we're just in that moment so i think it helped for us just to focus on where we at
00:59:30now so it's obviously you had to bring it home in the end they'll be able to set you up nicely
00:59:35talk to us about the final lap of that race you had to work hard for that one didn't you
00:59:38yes of course my shooting wasn't so good so that's why i had to do a very fast finish it was hard
00:59:49i am not a very good finisher so i'm happy that i managed to stay and bring the bronze home
00:59:56it must be difficult to watch from the sidelines there because there's a real battle for bronze
00:59:59sort of building up towards the end of the race he just managed to hold on to it and now for you
01:00:02as better a first senior uh medal which is this is incredible right yeah it's really nice and it's
01:00:08really nice because it's the last one with the horses and uh no matter what what that we didn't
01:00:14have to ride today it's still the last world championship with horse riding so i mean it's
01:00:18a pretty phenomenal yeah it's a it's a momentous occasion isn't it competing together as a team
01:00:23what's that been like teachers have you guys you guys have had a good day clearly you were on the
01:00:26podium but it's been it's been a good partnership this yes today we worked as a team very good
01:00:31we supported each other and it was a fun competition listen congratulations to both
01:00:37of you it's good to see such big smiles on your faces and what a great way to end the season well
01:00:40done thank you so much james congratulations to the lithuanian team and what a lovely thing to
01:00:48say in terms of uh his sprint finish peronis mariam saying i've not got a great finish in me
01:00:53so i had to really dig deep yeah it's uh admitting when you have some weaknesses and
01:00:59he's definitely going to work on that but again to bring it home in that way whilst um knowing that
01:01:05maybe that's not his strongest area is is incredible for lithuania so they are our team
01:01:13in third place james annadakis is busy getting amongst the podium places malik mohammed
01:01:20congratulations to both of you it is a silver medal at the world championships it's been a good
01:01:25year for both of you i've had to interview you both for various individual medals now a medal
01:01:29collectively here at the world championships we'll start with you uh malik how does that feel
01:01:33to to have won a silver medal at the world championships yeah i feel really i'm feeling
01:01:37very happy but this race was very different there is no riding and even the fencing bout was
01:01:44just three points but we were all very close to each other in the start of the laser run
01:01:50that was really different race for me today yeah it was a different one wasn't it was a bit of a
01:01:55strange day but you you held your nerve you kept your concentration and a really exciting battle
01:02:00at the end with chang wang seo talked to us about that mohammed yeah it was a very
01:02:07fast lap he just uh just begin the finish from the beginning with a lap it was hard a little
01:02:13bit hard for me but i'm super happy with this medal uh the competition ends with the middle
01:02:20it wasn't good for me with the individuals but i'm happy with this result at the end
01:02:26chang went quite early didn't he did that surprise you how quickly he started to sprint
01:02:30off uh on that final lap did it surprise you yeah for sure uh we just get out from the shooting
01:02:35range we just uh 50 meters and just began to put a very fast pace so i just was shocked and was i
01:02:44want able to be with him till the end malik it's been a great year for you i know it's been a great
01:02:49year for both of you you've won you know a few medals individually as well as obviously uh
01:02:53collectively so how do you sum up 2024 for yourself so far yeah 2024 was really a strong
01:03:00year the olympic qualification year is really difficult in the whole the season um i did it
01:03:07very well and now i'm just having the olympics in less than two months and the whole year was
01:03:14really surprising for me i didn't um i didn't know that i can do this but i did it at the end
01:03:21yeah you've been amazing to watch congratulations same question to you mohammed obviously you picked
01:03:25up a gold medal in budapest i know how much that meant to you uh you picked up a bronze medal in
01:03:29bulgaria as well two big strong podium finishes for you how's 2024 been for you yeah it was a
01:03:35very hard year long uh pulled with competitions but as it is a olympic year but i was so happy
01:03:44for this i got two medals and i was so happy for this result i was aiming for more but
01:03:53at the end it's good for me listen congratulations to both you ending the world championships in the
01:03:58best possible way with a silver medal congratulations to you and congratulations to
01:04:01egypt thank you thank you thank you bye bye congratulations to them then malik ishmael and
01:04:08mohammed el gendi with silver medals and again silver medal wonderful smiles mariam they were
01:04:15delighted they were overjoyed yeah that's uh the end of the world championships so it's uh
01:04:20it's nice to pick up that last medal before they head home and have something to show for
01:04:24the competition yeah and james is i think now with our gold medalists
01:04:32well congratulations to both of you an amazing race an amazing gold medal it feels like another
01:04:38long list of medals for korea in 2024 so i know you're both going to be very proud of this
01:04:42achievement uh let's start with you somewhere i mean it's it's been it's been a great year for
01:04:46you it's been a great year for korea just talk to us about what it feels like to win this gold medal
01:05:08in korea
01:05:24and this season is uh this competition is a first game is a man and women's relay is a
01:05:32gold medal so we have is a start is a very good and then last competition is a mixed relay is a
01:05:38again is a gold medal so it's a very happy and then we have is a full golden medal and then
01:05:43two is a silver medal so and then so very is happy and then we have is a prepared to the body
01:05:51olympic games we are come back to the korea we can a little bit less and then we can try to the
01:06:03training and then and so we are prepared to the party olympic games yeah chang wang has been a
01:06:10great year for you as well obviously a gold medal in ankara another gold medal here and as amongst
01:06:16other medals as well um sum up your season and and and how it's been for you 2024
01:06:46good
01:06:56and this season is so many is competition is
01:07:01but it's the feeling is is much better is in the competition so it's a very good season so
01:07:09but it's a decision this year is a very important decision because there's a
01:07:14olympic season so i i was in the two starting in the season is i don't have i i didn't have
01:07:23as a olympic ticket and the bodies this season is a very uh each competition is a very good
01:07:30position so i think i can take the olympic ticket so i can so i will back to the in the korea so
01:07:39so many is like and like the food and some day is a vacation so yeah and then we can prepare
01:07:48by olympic games thank you thank you both so much congratulations to you both congratulations
01:07:52to korea and uh well done for all your success thank you thank you so much and the korean team
01:07:58have certainly earned their food and rest as they quite rightly just said and uh athlete to
01:08:05athlete doesn't change does it just one world championship gold what you're going to do next
01:08:08i'm going to eat i'm going to sleep and then i'm gonna go and train some more because the season
01:08:12isn't over maria mama it's not i mean it's over for some people but for others it's it's just
01:08:18starting potentially i mean olympic games that's the dream and meddling at the olympic games is
01:08:23is incredibly hard incredibly tough especially amidst those outfits there are your classified
01:08:30results then for the mixed relay final results here at the world championships in zhengzhou
01:08:36korea egypt and lithuania uh your one two three
01:08:45and we have a bit of a look now shall we at the korean road to the top
01:08:53so
01:09:23so
01:09:53so
01:10:23so
01:10:53so
01:11:03that then is a road to the top for our athletes mixed relay done men's final done women's final
01:11:12done laser run championships mariam a little bit of time to reflect as we prepare for the
01:11:17victory ceremonies for our mixed relay athletes a chance to maybe prepare on the last 10 days
01:11:22here in zhengzhou we've had the laser run world championships we've had the qualified semifinals
01:11:27and finals of the men's of the women's now the mixed relay your overarching thoughts on the last
01:11:3110 days thrilling unpredictable surprising incredible um yeah a lot of emotions and
01:11:40thoughts running through my mind right now as we get ready to start the podium but it's kind of
01:11:47bittersweet to end this season because as you said some of them will be moving on to the olympic
01:11:52games to compete and some of them will essentially be in their off-season time now and resting for
01:11:57next season and there's going to be a big big change for next season if you are going to be
01:12:02competing from those senior athletes because you have to obviously train for the obstacle course
01:12:08obstacle course is is a whole different story now and you have the younger athletes who've
01:12:14been training now for two years and you you're going to have to go up against that and you have
01:12:18no training because you've been training for riding all year in preparation of the olympics so
01:12:23it's going to be very interesting to see that but yeah laser run world champs
01:12:28we're seeing the younger generation the generation that's that's going to carry the sport and
01:12:34um lead it hopefully uh into yeah a good place and uh and senior world champs
01:12:43for last time for the riding so um again it's a very unique competition pick out some highlights
01:12:49some memories that in a week's time or a month's time from whether it be the laser run and the
01:12:53youngsters or the you know the masters or whatever the the seniors pick out a few highlights things
01:12:59that will be etched in your memory from this championships in jangar
01:13:03uh south african athlete from the laser run was it van der berg van der berg yeah he was
01:13:08incredibly uh fast on course and the fact that he had only two months to to learn uh how to shoot
01:13:15was that was something that i've never heard of uh chang won say without finish it has to be said
01:13:20that was insane um i think both uh bronze medalists yesterday uh were incredible in the
01:13:29women that finish was was i think we weren't expecting that at all and uh that scrap for
01:13:36gold at the end something sung really dug deep in that final turn and i think it was about to
01:13:42be overtaken by guzzi right at the line but yeah timing chip says otherwise um you know very
01:13:49memorable moments here in zhang zhao botanical gardens oh you cutie we went for a little walk
01:13:56this morning folks and they are beautiful i counted it 17 paces from the stadium to the
01:14:01botanical gardens um do you know what i really like because i'm a bit of a soft lad was um
01:14:08the real real real young young underlies yeah the little indian girl she was about six
01:14:17she was gorgeous but just to have like the cute factor aside but the future of the sport we've
01:14:23had 700 athletes from 52 countries and six continents come through this stadium in the
01:14:28last 10 days that shows the sport's alive and well the sport's evolving the sport's moving on
01:14:33and i thoroughly enjoyed seeing seeing those young athletes seeing the compete
01:14:37seeing the smiles on everybody's faces and just seeing sport epitomized by these athletes spirit
01:14:43determination dedication practice training and ultimately fun definitely i think especially with
01:14:51that transition from laser run to seniors we could see the difference and the youngsters
01:14:55having a little bit more fun with it and yeah just easing their way into the sport and then
01:15:01taking a look at those other elite senior athletes who have competed in the senior world championships
01:15:06and obviously the younger athletes who have still been here after this and will be watching them on
01:15:11as well and thinking i want to be that guy this this guy's my hero this uh athletes who i want to
01:15:18be when i grow up and it's it's just like generations yeah it's good and yeah generations
01:15:24um handing off to other generations to carry the sport and they may be watching on now some of those
01:15:28laser run athletes watching on as the mixed relay takes place and the seniors yesterday and the day
01:15:34before take place some of the stories to come out of it as well not all good news stories either
01:15:40you've got to say jose chung and failing to make the final elodie cluvel
01:15:46struggling to make the final leaping with his his wrist problem yesterday we had a chat about this
01:15:51this morning as well the czech athlete merrick reich yes who did not make it out into the course
01:15:57i think there was a slight injury with his horse and all he needed to qualify to the olympic games
01:16:03was a 16th place finish and he came in 17th so essentially that's his olympic dream gone
01:16:10and that was bitterly disappointing it is devastating i think for him and if he's watching
01:16:15on you're incredible and you will recover from this and you'll be back stronger it's it has to
01:16:22be very tough right now olympics are the dream but many more to come and we saw athletes come
01:16:28through as well didn't we yurt for switzerland in the women's discipline performed really really
01:16:33well uh it would be remiss of us to not congratulate the chinese for putting on this
01:16:40event it's been probably the most organized sporting event i think i've ever seen they've
01:16:46coped with a deluge it's been the kind of monsoons sort of stuff today they've coped with that
01:16:52brilliantly really really well after the volunteers thank you pardon thinking on their feet yeah no
01:16:58they have they absolutely have and they've adapted they've changed and you know the the stadium's
01:17:02gorgeous clearly you can see that all the facilities are out of this world but actually
01:17:06they've done it with character as well they've done it with care and the volunteers have been
01:17:09superb all of the officials have always been very precise and very diligent with their work
01:17:15so i think all in all it's been a very very successful world championship so far i'd say so
01:17:21yeah it's uh it's been incredible to be a tiny part of that competition and to witness again
01:17:29all these incredible athletes coaches nations on the podiums and as you said like the organizational
01:17:36committee behind the scenes and the media committee by the way there's so much that
01:17:39goes on behind the scenes to make this live broadcast happen a lot of equipment a lot of
01:17:46people involved and so thank you to everyone behind the scenes it's not just thrown together
01:17:51on the back of a cigarette packet everybody there is uh there's a lot that goes into it
01:17:55we can look ahead to the olympic games as well who are the favorites for the women's and for the
01:17:59men's it's really tough to point out at this stage we have a lot of athletes who have qualified to
01:18:06the olympics who have not made an appearance here in the world championships the likes of
01:18:11marina chick correnza bryson who i think um are really good chances for podiums um but yeah but
01:18:19we see young talent emerging as well rita erdos who i don't think we we had her uh in our sights
01:18:27at all and yes stealing that third place finish yesterday that that was the moment that slip up
01:18:32from selma at the end is is what gave rita erdos her position at the olympic games and erdos for
01:18:38those laser run youngsters watching this is a perfect example she won the laser run in dublin
01:18:44in 2018 and picked up a bronze medal in 2024 here in Zhengzhou in the modern pentathlon final
01:18:52that's the natural progression from the laser run into the seniors in the pentathlon
01:18:56and that is inspiration right there from the hungarian who did brilliantly may i also
01:19:01doff the cap to the man that normally sits in this chair james annadakis who has done a tremendous job
01:19:07as mc as well as bringing us our interviews in between the disciplines
01:19:12plenty of reaction will be on the uipm website passion for paris and the series in the build up
01:19:23to the olympic games which is very very soon as we can see our team's being led out
01:19:31and a bronze silver and golden smile in there as well
01:19:38and the mixed relay had plenty of effort plenty of desire
01:19:50the egyptian team be happy with the silver it's a good way to end this competition in the season
01:19:59always nice to be on the podium whichever step everyone wants to be on the top but
01:20:02you're on the podium and you're there to be honest i think
01:20:06from the last olympics tokyo 2020 which actually took place in 2021 due to covid
01:20:12i feel i don't know where the time went because we're on to the next olympics now and uh
01:20:18i don't know how we got here but yeah we're here and we're here in style
01:20:22they are your lithuania athletes
01:20:31on to the third step of the podium they will take their bronze medals started out in second
01:20:43but the class shooting frankly of the egyptian team elevated them excellent running as well
01:20:49and by their own admission the lithuanian team peronas admitted himself not the quickest finisher
01:20:55in his running so a bronze medal they are delighted with and huge credit to them as well
01:21:05still not managed to get our hands on one of those mascots yet marion by the way i think that's a
01:21:09someone riding i think that's a rider in celebration that this is the last world
01:21:15championships that will include the riding okay got a little key chain on so silver for egypt
01:21:30on to the second step
01:21:33world championship silver medal look at those smiles that's
01:21:37priceless they are that's that is the epitome of sport
01:21:49so our athletes receive their silver medals for the mixed relay here in jing jiao 2024
01:21:57by chairman of jing jiao culture tourism and sports peru company
01:22:04and all i start to move on paris which is august so there's a little bit of a gap there's a training
01:22:10gap and a training block that will need two months under two months just enough to get a
01:22:14few days rest in and then repeat and then yeah repeat it's it's interesting by the way most of
01:22:21the athletes don't plan their peaks at the world champs so this this isn't their best yet yep there
01:22:27will be more to come in paris make sure you stay tuned and follow the modern pentathlon in versailles
01:22:33i'm sure you will and here come our gold medalists they were imperious where the korean team
