00:00:00 [MUSIC PLAYING]
00:00:03 Yes, hello.
00:00:23 Welcome to everybody tuning in from around the world
00:00:26 to Ankara, Turkey, for the conclusion of World Cup 2
00:00:30 here in the 2024 UIPM Pentathlon season.
00:00:35 It is mixed relay day.
00:00:37 We've had the women's individual and the men's individual
00:00:40 finals.
00:00:41 It is now time for the teams to join forces
00:00:45 and see if they can have one more chance at getting a medal.
00:00:49 That magpie has been the most consistent spectator here
00:00:52 all week, been perched on top of that tree enjoying the weather.
00:00:55 16 degrees today with the sun just peeking through the clouds
00:01:01 as we look forward to the start of the mixed relay.
00:01:06 So before we get underway, let's just
00:01:07 take a look at how the new format starts with riding.
00:01:11 The first has been, of course, in mixed relay.
00:01:15 Eight obstacles per gender.
00:01:16 The usual rules apply with seven points per knockdown,
00:01:19 10 points for refusal.
00:01:20 It's then off to the fencing bonus round,
00:01:23 the ranking round happening this morning.
00:01:25 We'll update on those scores in a moment's time.
00:01:28 We then move over to the ball.
00:01:29 It's two sets of 100 meters per gender.
00:01:34 Then it's the laser round where each athlete has
00:01:36 to complete three times 600 meters.
00:01:39 It's the formation lap for the first lap
00:01:41 before the two shooting series at 10 meters distance
00:01:44 per gender.
00:01:45 They have to hit the five targets
00:01:47 before they can move on.
00:01:48 The first over the finish line, as always, is the winner.
00:01:52 This is the new format.
00:01:53 It's fast, it's frantic, and a new challenge
00:01:55 for athletes to overcome.
00:01:56 Welcome to Modern Pentathlon 2024.
00:02:00 So we'll update you then on the ranking round
00:02:03 and bring you up to speed with how the athletes got on a little
00:02:06 bit earlier today when they competed up
00:02:09 against each other for those fencing points.
00:02:14 And it was quite a tight and good affair.
00:02:22 It's Kazakhstan top of the pile with 31 touches.
00:02:27 In second place is Egypt with 24, 23 touches for Italy,
00:02:33 19 for Mexico, 17 for Poland, and four for Turkey.
00:02:38 So that's where we are.
00:02:39 Six teams taking part in the competition today.
00:02:42 An Olympic year tends to result in fewer nations risking
00:02:46 athlete injury with the additional competition.
00:02:50 And of course, we have two events back to back
00:02:52 here in Ankara, because a lot of the athletes
00:02:54 will be flying out today to Budapest in their quest
00:02:58 for Olympic ranking points.
00:03:01 Let's introduce Mariam Amur.
00:03:05 And there's a little applause going on there, Mariam.
00:03:07 I'm not sure if that's for your introduction.
00:03:08 I'm sure it's for the athletes.
00:03:09 But welcome, Mariam Amur, of course, Egyptian athlete.
00:03:11 Thank you for joining us in the competition.
00:03:13 Pleasure to have you here.
00:03:14 Yeah, thank you.
00:03:14 It's amazing to be here, as always.
00:03:16 We've had a fantastic day yesterday
00:03:19 with the men's and women's final.
00:03:21 And today with the mixed relay, things
00:03:24 should move on swiftly as we crown our top three.
00:03:27 Yeah, looking forward to concluding the action here
00:03:33 in Ankara with an exciting day of mixed relay action.
00:03:37 Kazakhstan have been in very, very good form so far.
00:03:41 Those 31 victories could put them in a very good position.
00:03:45 But don't forget, the crowd's, by the way,
00:03:47 out in their numbers here for mixed relay
00:03:50 to support the athletes.
00:03:53 Here in Turkey, of course, the event
00:03:56 will return with the World Cup final in--
00:04:00 well, it's just over a month's time now.
00:04:02 This season is flying by, Mariam.
00:04:04 Blink and you miss it.
00:04:05 Yeah, I mean, Olympics are in August.
00:04:07 So we have to move on very quickly throughout the season.
00:04:11 I think it's going to be fastest season ever.
00:04:13 And these athletes pretty much have no time
00:04:15 in between the competitions.
00:04:17 Who's going to win gold at the Olympics?
00:04:21 Skipped a couple of steps there.
00:04:23 I mean, with how things have been so far--
00:04:26 In the women's?
00:04:28 We don't even know who qualifies yet.
00:04:30 Yeah, but it's all hypothetical.
00:04:32 That's jumping the gun.
00:04:33 Hypothetical.
00:04:35 You know what?
00:04:36 As of now, two very informed female athletes,
00:04:41 Corenza Bryson and Michelle Kuljic.
00:04:44 But so much can change in pentathlon corner.
00:04:45 That's the exciting nature of this sport.
00:04:48 And applying it to mixed relay today,
00:04:49 obviously Kazakhstan are in a really good position.
00:04:55 Cute baby looking on and thinking, oh, maybe,
00:04:58 mom and dad, you can get me involved
00:05:01 in this exciting sport.
00:05:04 Yeah, Turkey, by the way, is going out with their B team,
00:05:07 giving them a bit more experience.
00:05:09 Because obviously, they're not going to be joining pentathlon
00:05:14 with the riding.
00:05:15 Well, Ilkra Zucsel has potentially now got
00:05:18 to compete in Budapest.
00:05:19 Because she didn't qualify for the final
00:05:21 here in Ankara, which has ruffled up her plans this year.
00:05:27 So she has to go to Budapest not to get those necessary points.
00:05:30 Turkey will not be competing in the riding, by the way.
00:05:34 So our first team out will be Poland.
00:05:38 Malgorzata Karbaunik and Daniel Lanowicz.
00:05:42 Again, with mixed relay, we know both athletes
00:05:48 have to start inside that box on your screen.
00:05:51 And the handover is also in the box.
00:05:53 So we'll see how quick that handover time is
00:05:58 with these athletes.
00:05:59 But we have Malgorzata Karbaunik out first.
00:06:01 The female athlete always starts a bit wobbly on the horse
00:06:05 there.
00:06:06 Needs to rebalance, heading into that sharp left hand turn
00:06:12 into two.
00:06:12 This is looking--
00:06:13 Nice and up.
00:06:16 It's looking good so far.
00:06:18 There's some sharp turns in this mixed relay course,
00:06:20 isn't there?
00:06:21 But actually, we know with mixed relay,
00:06:24 a good riding score can really propel you up those standings.
00:06:28 But equally, it can cause you problems.
00:06:30 So a lot on the--
00:06:34 a lot of the stake here for the athletes.
00:06:36 This is solid, though.
00:06:37 No knockdowns or refusals to report on.
00:06:43 Good stuff, this.
00:06:43 I must say I'm very impressed by Karbaunik here.
00:06:47 She heads towards obstacle eight and goes clear.
00:06:50 Great start.
00:06:51 So Lanowicz needs to--
00:06:54 he's lost time there, isn't he?
00:06:56 He's not obviously struggling a little bit with the horse,
00:06:58 and the build-up.
00:07:00 Lanowicz is experienced enough, though, to recover.
00:07:03 Goes past one, and here we go.
00:07:04 The horse is up and running.
00:07:06 And often, you might see when the horse struggles a little
00:07:09 bit at start.
00:07:10 But once they get into their rhythm,
00:07:12 then you can still pull off a really good ride, can't you?
00:07:16 That turn from two to three, by the way,
00:07:18 is quite a challenging part of the course, isn't it?
00:07:20 It is, yeah.
00:07:21 You have to take that turn as early as you can
00:07:25 so the horse can see the fence before it jumps it.
00:07:28 But he is doing that beautifully here.
00:07:31 Recovered well from that slow start around over,
00:07:34 should I say, in the box.
00:07:35 So we head over to the final three fences.
00:07:37 This could be a perfect ride.
00:07:39 But of course, we'll have some time penalties.
00:07:42 That's OK, though.
00:07:43 I think I can afford to have a few time penalties.
00:07:47 A really good standard being set by the team from Poland.
00:07:51 There you have it.
00:07:52 A TAR score of 286.
00:07:57 So we've just been informed that Mexico are not
00:08:01 going to be taking part in the riding, which is interesting.
00:08:05 I wonder if that means that they have withdrawn
00:08:09 from the competition.
00:08:12 So interesting.
00:08:14 That means we will have three more teams.
00:08:16 So we've been informed Mexico will not be riding,
00:08:27 which is curious, actually, because Mexico is a good team.
00:08:31 And as I say, Emmanuel Padilla will pick up medal
00:08:33 after medal after medal.
00:08:35 Wonder if there's a reason for that.
00:08:37 We will endeavor to bring you an update as soon as we get one.
00:08:45 So they've withdrawn from the competition, we've been told.
00:08:48 So interesting.
00:08:50 Yeah, I think we thought we'd see them up on the podium.
00:08:54 But again, things happen.
00:08:56 We're not really sure why they've withdrawn.
00:08:58 So that 286 from Poland could be--
00:09:07 Daniel Norwich looks pretty pleased himself, doesn't he?
00:09:13 There are the Mexicans, Emmanuel Padilla and Mariana Arceo
00:09:17 withdrawn from the competition.
00:09:19 You think maybe something happened in the warm-up arena
00:09:21 that--
00:09:22 I mean, it could have been.
00:09:24 I mean, they're in their riding suits.
00:09:27 Yeah, it's not like they've left fencing
00:09:29 and decided not to continue with the competition.
00:09:33 So we'll find out as best as we can.
00:09:36 Who knows, maybe we can even get an interview with Emmanuel Padilla
00:09:38 and Mariana Arceo in their break between the riding and--
00:09:45 well, the fencing and the swimming
00:09:46 would be the obvious juncture for that.
00:09:49 So we are reduced now down to five teams.
00:09:51 We have three more riding teams to bring you coverage of.
00:09:58 Yeah, I mean, those top three teams
00:10:03 are pretty close together-- the team from Italy,
00:10:05 the team from Egypt, and the team from Kazakhstan.
00:10:09 So we'll keep our eyes peeled on that riding from them.
00:10:13 Good score here could go a long way for these athletes.
00:10:17 Sounded good, couldn't it?
00:10:19 I mean, the team from Egypt, we have
00:10:22 Amira and Dilmataz Mohamed.
00:10:24 Mataz got the silver medal--
00:10:26 two silvers, yeah.
00:10:28 Back-to-back silvers from Cairo and here in Ankara.
00:10:30 And Amira did not make it to the final of this competition.
00:10:33 But again, a pretty strong team.
00:10:35 You have to think that if Mataz is given quite a bit of lead,
00:10:39 he'll hold on to it or even--
00:10:41 What I will say, an excellent opportunity for a medal here
00:10:44 for all these teams, really, now.
00:10:46 Well, for Poland, Italy, Egypt, and Kazakhstan,
00:10:48 because of course, Turkey are not going to be riding.
00:10:53 So they won't be in medal contention.
00:10:56 It's more an experience thing for Turkey.
00:10:57 Absolutely.
00:10:58 I mean, they're younger athletes,
00:10:59 and they have the obstacle discipline
00:11:03 to look forward to next year.
00:11:05 It makes sense, doesn't it?
00:11:06 I mean, they're not going to be pushing
00:11:07 for Olympic qualifications.
00:11:08 So they'll be focusing on their obstacle training
00:11:11 and this being a good opportunity for them
00:11:13 to experience competition in this format.
00:11:20 The Italian team is in the arena.
00:11:23 Aurora Tognetti and Federico Alessandro,
00:11:26 as Aurora gets things started.
00:11:30 Here we go, then.
00:11:32 286, the best score so far.
00:11:35 And if you look at those live standings,
00:11:37 you can see just how far Kazakhstan are ahead.
00:11:41 Tognetti, clear so far.
00:11:46 She makes way over obstacle three.
00:11:49 Eight obstacles each with a mixed relay.
00:11:53 Four, heading towards five.
00:11:57 Goes in a bit deep, but she's doing
00:11:59 a good job of balancing the horseback.
00:12:02 Before those fences, very sharp turns here.
00:12:05 Yeah, it's a challenging course.
00:12:07 Sharp right now towards eight.
00:12:09 And Tognetti clears this, and she'll
00:12:11 be pleased to time 138 to beat.
00:12:13 Oh, it's a one-knot down there, so seven off the score.
00:12:15 Handing over now to Alessandro.
00:12:18 So reasonably good getaway.
00:12:20 And they're looking to rebuild this course.
00:12:25 But they're going to have to be quick here because--
00:12:28 He has to pick up the pace because we've
00:12:30 seen how that can go wrong yesterday.
00:12:32 Mohamed Chabane yesterday, of course,
00:12:34 without elimination in the ride, had a slow start.
00:12:36 And really, that's why the horse refused to jump.
00:12:41 And eventually, Mohamed did fall.
00:12:45 It's great work there from the volunteers
00:12:49 getting this course back up, putting it back together.
00:12:52 Obstacle eight, five, clear.
00:12:54 Yeah, definitely some--
00:12:56 There is only eight seconds to go.
00:12:59 So seven for that knockdown.
00:13:01 You can be confident in saying that they will lose some time
00:13:08 here through the time penalties.
00:13:09 Here we go.
00:13:10 And every second they go over is a second off their score.
00:13:13 A point off their score, shall I say.
00:13:15 There we go.
00:13:15 Nine time penalties.
00:13:16 Seven, that's another 286.
00:13:20 No, 284, that one.
00:13:22 So yeah, not a bad score at all, actually, for Italy.
00:13:28 284 their score.
00:13:29 Yeah, pretty solid score.
00:13:31 We'll see how the athletes or the teams high ranked will do
00:13:37 as we welcome the next athletes into the arena.
00:13:40 Mira and Dilamatas Mohamed, the team of Egypt.
00:13:44 They are riding Pamir and Polatkin.
00:13:54 They are a bit--
00:13:56 I mean, they're 28 seconds behind Kazakhstan at the
00:14:00 moment.
00:14:02 Good ride here could really close that gap right up.
00:14:04 They could do themselves a world of good if they were to
00:14:08 go clear here and really put the pressure on Kazakhstan.
00:14:12 I think they need to make up points here in the riding to
00:14:15 really stand a chance of catching Kazakhstan, but you
00:14:17 never know.
00:14:19 Mira and Dil.
00:14:22 First fence done, a sharp left hand turn.
00:14:27 Into two, it seems like.
00:14:28 Something spooked the horse there.
00:14:30 She's managed to get it back under control.
00:14:33 Over two, that's good recovery for Mandel.
00:14:37 She's got to cut back around now towards three.
00:14:40 Well done.
00:14:41 Oh, she's just catching the back legs on the top of that
00:14:45 vertical obstacle.
00:14:47 So that's seven off the score.
00:14:49 I think given that moment of caution, I think she's done
00:14:56 well to recover here.
00:14:57 Yeah, she's recovered well.
00:14:58 She has two more fences to go and Oxford done.
00:15:02 And number eight is, of course, the vertical fences.
00:15:06 Matas needs to pick up some pace here.
00:15:09 Going out of the box, the handover looks good.
00:15:12 Tazmahamed is already out of that box.
00:15:15 Only one knockdown here would be OK for the Egyptian team.
00:15:19 Given that it looked like it could have been a refusal
00:15:21 heading into two.
00:15:23 Matas has recovered.
00:15:24 Oh, and that always looked like it was going to be a
00:15:29 refusal, didn't it?
00:15:30 He's done well to stay on the horse and
00:15:31 keep it under control.
00:15:32 So that's one refusal now.
00:15:34 Bit of a tight turn into two, I have to say.
00:15:36 It's pretty difficult.
00:15:39 He has to go around.
00:15:40 Yeah.
00:15:41 It's a case of just finishing the course now, isn't it?
00:15:43 Because one more refusal and Egypt will be
00:15:47 eliminated from the ride.
00:15:49 There we go.
00:15:50 Covered nicely.
00:15:52 Yeah.
00:15:52 So that is 27 off the score.
00:15:55 So it's damage limitation now.
00:15:56 And we are losing points per second.
00:15:58 Oh my god.
00:15:59 That was--
00:16:00 he was a bit off balance there.
00:16:02 But again, managed to get over five nicely as we had it on
00:16:08 to our final fence, the vertical of eight.
00:16:13 So Matas Mohamed to bring it home for Egypt.
00:16:18 And he's done well to finish that off.
00:16:21 It is 52 points off the score.
00:16:23 That moves Egypt down to fourth place.
00:16:27 So 248, as Mahmoud said.
00:16:31 It's going to push them.
00:16:32 Well, listen, there's still one more ride to go, isn't
00:16:35 there, in Kazakhstan.
00:16:36 If they can put a half decent score together here, they're
00:16:38 going to be--
00:16:40 Yeah, but I think they're going to move behind
00:16:42 Italy regardless.
00:16:43 --behind Italy, aren't they?
00:16:46 We'll see the scores in a moment.
00:16:49 It's our final team.
00:16:50 It is the team from Kazakhstan.
00:16:54 And you feel now it's going to be a battle between Italy and
00:16:57 Kazakhstan if Kazakhstan can put together a good ride.
00:17:05 Yeah, Lena Potapenko, Pavel Ilyashenko,
00:17:08 two very experienced.
00:17:09 Actually, Poland.
00:17:12 Now only 22 points behind Italy in their live standings.
00:17:17 And Egypt have dropped over 30 seconds behind Italy.
00:17:28 And you can see the scores right there.
00:17:32 Here we go.
00:17:33 It is over to you, Kazakhstan.
00:17:35 A clear ride here.
00:17:37 And you can pretty much say that gold will be theirs
00:17:40 unless there was something drastic
00:17:42 to happen on the laser run.
00:17:44 But Kazakhstan looking in a very good position here.
00:17:47 Potapenko on the course.
00:17:50 Two experienced athletes here as well.
00:17:53 This is looking good from Elena Potapenko.
00:17:55 She approaches her final fence.
00:17:57 And it's handover time.
00:18:00 Yeah, nicely done.
00:18:01 This is a very smooth ride.
00:18:03 Look at that handover.
00:18:04 Perfect, isn't it?
00:18:05 So all eyes now on Ilyashenko.
00:18:08 Solid start, looks to be in reasonably good control
00:18:11 of the horse.
00:18:12 I see a bit of a shortcut for it to do there.
00:18:14 It doesn't go around the trees.
00:18:17 Nicely done.
00:18:18 Doesn't need to put himself under any pressure here,
00:18:20 does he?
00:18:20 It's just a case of getting it home.
00:18:22 Yeah.
00:18:22 I think he just needs to pick up that pace a little bit
00:18:25 to avoid the refusal.
00:18:27 Yeah.
00:18:28 And that's a knockdown on--
00:18:30 That's fine, though.
00:18:31 Yeah, that's OK.
00:18:32 They can afford two or three knockdowns
00:18:33 and still have a very good lead.
00:18:35 Kazakhstan flying here.
00:18:37 And on their way already, you feel, to an uncatchable lead.
00:18:44 Just a few more to go.
00:18:45 Oh, there's a knockdown.
00:18:50 Over to eight now.
00:18:51 Clears this, and you feel Kazakhstan
00:18:53 are in a very good position to march on the way to gold.
00:18:57 Well, it is another knockdown, and they've
00:18:58 got a few time penalties.
00:18:59 So we're going to see how that affects their score overall.
00:19:01 They've still got a decent lead.
00:19:03 It's been chipped away, though.
00:19:05 It is now 21 points, the difference between Italy
00:19:09 and Kazakhstan, which is--
00:19:12 273.
00:19:13 That's 273 in the red.
00:19:14 Yeah, 273.
00:19:15 So that's actually going to be quite a bit closer
00:19:17 than we thought.
00:19:20 Let's close the pack up nicely.
00:19:22 And we've got a nice competition on our hands here.
00:19:25 Kazakhstan lead, Italy second, Poland third, Egypt fourth,
00:19:30 Mexico have withdrawn from the competition.
00:19:34 We'll try and speak to them and see what happened.
00:19:37 And then, of course, we have the team from Turkey
00:19:41 who we look forward to seeing in the fencing bonus round, which
00:19:45 is, of course, our next discipline live here
00:19:48 from Ankara, Turkey.
00:19:51 Let's look at the scores.
00:19:53 Kazakhstan on 535.
00:19:56 21 points behind them is Italy.
00:20:00 A further 23 points further down is Poland.
00:20:07 10 points behind Poland is Egypt.
00:20:11 Mexico, of course, didn't compete in the riding.
00:20:15 They've withdrawn from the competition now.
00:20:18 So it's effectively a five-team race.
00:20:22 But if you look at those standings,
00:20:23 there are battles that could play out
00:20:27 amongst all those teams.
00:20:29 Mexico gone, Turkey still in the competition,
00:20:32 but won't be competitive in terms of the medal standings.
00:20:35 But Egypt, 10 points now behind Poland,
00:20:38 will still be in a battle for a podium position,
00:20:42 despite losing that score in the riding.
00:20:48 And of course, Italy with a decent score,
00:20:51 and Kazakhstan still top of the pile.
00:20:54 That concludes the riding discipline.
00:20:56 Time to look forward to the fencing,
00:20:58 but let's just take a look back at the replays.
00:20:59 We'll be back in a moment's time.
00:21:01 (upbeat music)
00:21:03 (upbeat music)
00:21:07 (upbeat music)
00:21:10 (upbeat music)
00:21:12 (upbeat music)
00:21:15 (upbeat music)
00:21:17 (upbeat music)
00:21:21 (upbeat music)
00:21:24 (upbeat music)
00:21:27 (upbeat music)
00:21:31 (upbeat music)
00:21:34 (upbeat music)
00:21:38 (upbeat music)
00:21:41 (upbeat music)
00:21:44 (upbeat music)
00:21:50 Welcome back to Ankara, Turkey,
00:21:52 as we continue our build-up to the fencing bonus round.
00:21:57 We've completed the riding,
00:21:58 and the scores have been mixed up a little bit.
00:22:01 The headline from riding is that Egypt dropped 52 points,
00:22:07 perhaps one of the favorites for gold.
00:22:10 They slipped down the standings,
00:22:11 they're now in fourth place.
00:22:12 They've gone from second to fourth,
00:22:13 but they still have a chance to get a medal, Mariam.
00:22:16 (laughing)
00:22:17 - That was fast.
00:22:18 You know what, the two-- - As fast as frantic,
00:22:19 it's modern pentathlon 2024. - It is, it is, you're right.
00:22:21 It is.
00:22:22 Something dramatic has to go up top.
00:22:25 I think the teams up top are pretty solid,
00:22:27 so it's pretty tough to-- - At this ground,
00:22:29 it's hard to look past Kazakhstan taking gold,
00:22:33 doesn't it, isn't it?
00:22:34 All right, let's see how things move swiftly over there
00:22:36 from the riding arena to the swimming pool,
00:22:39 and, sorry, the fencing arena, should I say.
00:22:42 Getting a bit ahead of ourselves there.
00:22:44 The fencing ranking round happened earlier this morning.
00:22:49 We've been through those scores.
00:22:50 We will, of course, recap on them in a moment's time,
00:22:52 and it's Kazakhstan's fencing ranking round
00:22:54 that has really been the difference
00:22:57 between those teams at the top.
00:22:59 In fact, Egypt, you have to feel for,
00:23:01 'cause they had a solid fencing ranking round,
00:23:03 but it is the nature of pentathlon
00:23:06 that things can just mix up like a tumble dryer,
00:23:11 if you like, 'cause-- - Yeah, I mean,
00:23:12 Patrick Dogg yesterday, he was leading the entire pack
00:23:15 and elimination in that riding was the end
00:23:19 of his competition, effectively.
00:23:21 - Yeah, it was.
00:23:22 That was a real shame for Patrick,
00:23:24 who was really in a good position,
00:23:26 having set a score of 27 victories
00:23:30 in the fencing ranking round.
00:23:32 The athletes have turned up to watch today.
00:23:37 Is that Christopher Patton in the crowd?
00:23:40 Maybe it's Christopher Patton.
00:23:42 Look alike.
00:23:44 - Yeah, most of these athletes have now--
00:23:47 - Jumped on a plane to Budapest,
00:23:49 and that is a crazy calendar
00:23:52 and a quick turnaround for those athletes
00:23:54 in terms of having to get themselves ready
00:23:57 for the next World Cup.
00:23:58 It's Olympic year.
00:24:01 All these events have to be fit in before August,
00:24:05 and obviously, Olympic year tends to result
00:24:09 in fewer nations risking athlete injury,
00:24:12 of course, with the additional competition,
00:24:14 and two events back to back.
00:24:17 We have a smaller participation here in the mixed relay.
00:24:22 - Yes, the teams line up, checking their equipment,
00:24:26 make sure everything's ready to go.
00:24:29 Out of that bonus round, these are the Turkish athletes.
00:24:34 They have not competed in the ride.
00:24:37 Again, they are one of the younger athletes
00:24:41 and just competing for experience here
00:24:43 in their home nation.
00:24:44 Of course, start the bonus round
00:24:48 with our lowest ranked athletes, Poland and Turkey.
00:24:53 Lowest ranked, meaning lowest ranked
00:24:59 in the fencing ranking round.
00:25:01 There you can see the team of Poland,
00:25:03 Daniel Lavrovich and Margorzata Karabovnik.
00:25:08 (crowd chattering)
00:25:11 Yeah, just live shots then of the athletes
00:25:17 preparing themselves for the start
00:25:19 of the fencing bonus round.
00:25:21 Just a reminder of the rules.
00:25:25 Every victory for each team is worth two extra points.
00:25:30 And at this point in the competition,
00:25:32 two extra points can make a difference to your score
00:25:35 in terms of climbing up.
00:25:36 (crowd chattering)
00:26:03 So Ankara, Turkey has been a great location
00:26:07 for the World Cup once again.
00:26:08 We were unlucky with the weather once again,
00:26:12 weren't we yesterday?
00:26:13 Heavy downpour, meaning that meant individual final
00:26:17 had to be delayed.
00:26:18 Wasn't quite as dramatic as the weather
00:26:20 we had the year before.
00:26:22 It's very volatile, the weather in Ankara this time of year.
00:26:26 It's very somber.
00:26:27 - Very moody.
00:26:29 - Very moody.
00:26:30 - Yeah, it's unpredictable.
00:26:32 (crowd chattering)
00:26:34 - Such as modern pentathlon itself.
00:26:37 I mean, the delay though,
00:26:40 I think it was safer for the athletes.
00:26:42 - Any gossip from the Egyptian team
00:26:45 that could have brought us to this today?
00:26:46 Obviously, Mahan, for those of you who know him,
00:26:47 he's a former Egyptian athlete.
00:26:51 And obviously, yeah, very close ties to the Egyptian team.
00:26:56 Any lines, any news you can offer us?
00:26:59 - So no gossip, but one thing I can tell you
00:27:01 is Mahan Achabian is okay after that fall yesterday.
00:27:05 We were worried a bit 'cause he didn't get straight up,
00:27:08 but he's recovering, he's doing well,
00:27:11 and he's going to compete in Budapest.
00:27:15 - Good to know.
00:27:17 (crowd chattering)
00:27:20 A lot of the Egyptian athletes have already flown out
00:27:24 to, or they're on their way to the airport as we speak.
00:27:27 (crowd chattering)
00:27:30 - Ladies and gentlemen, welcome again
00:27:32 to the U.S. pentathlon board.
00:27:34 (crowd chattering)
00:27:37 - Which will be Turkey versus Poland.
00:27:42 (crowd chattering)
00:27:45 Taking a look at the live scores there.
00:27:59 Kazakhstan 21 points ahead of Italy.
00:28:03 Poland moved up to third place.
00:28:05 They were second bottom after ranking round.
00:28:07 So it is interesting to see how things can mix up.
00:28:13 (crowd chattering)
00:28:16 - Like two points.
00:28:18 (crowd chattering)
00:28:20 - Here we go then, the start of fencing points.
00:28:35 About to get underway, our first two teams
00:28:38 making their way out onto the stage.
00:28:39 Good opportunity for Turkey to test further
00:28:42 their fencing abilities in competition level.
00:28:46 - Listen, they only got four victories in the ranking round.
00:28:49 We're not gonna shout that glory.
00:28:50 It's not about them winning medals here.
00:28:55 Interestingly, I mean, they are potentially
00:28:58 gonna finish fifth, which is, I mean,
00:29:00 that's an accolade, isn't it?
00:29:01 Fifth in a major competition.
00:29:02 It's something to put on the resume.
00:29:06 - Yeah, definitely.
00:29:07 I'm glad that there are younger athletes joining
00:29:12 these mixed relays than the seniors.
00:29:14 I mean, it gives them a bit of exposure
00:29:16 and just a taste of what competition is all about.
00:29:21 As always, the women start us off in every discipline
00:29:28 and here on the bonus round piece,
00:29:30 there's no exception as
00:29:32 Margozata Karbovnik and the Turkish athlete
00:29:40 get us underway.
00:29:42 - Team needs a total of two hits
00:29:45 for two extra bonus points.
00:29:48 - So here we go, Poland versus Turkey.
00:29:52 Can Turkey build on the four victories
00:29:55 they got in the ranking round?
00:29:56 Can Poland build on the 17 that they got?
00:29:59 Pick up an extra couple of points.
00:30:02 It's a cautious start to this bout.
00:30:04 And Poland with the touch.
00:30:07 Bogdan committed herself to the top of the ladder.
00:30:11 Committed herself there to the attack
00:30:14 and it was Karbovnik who countered the attack
00:30:19 with an attack of her own.
00:30:20 - Yeah, it was a counter-attack defense from her.
00:30:26 As she hands off to her male teammate, Daniel Lavrinovich.
00:30:32 If Poland get this second hit
00:30:40 that they win this bout on the bonus round,
00:30:44 if Turkey get the hit,
00:30:46 then we have one more touch to look forward to.
00:30:49 Here we go.
00:30:50 One, zero for Poland.
00:30:54 - Poland looking to get this done and dusted then.
00:30:57 Turkey hanging on to this fencing bonus round tie.
00:31:02 Danilovich versus Tomis.
00:31:07 Yeah, Lavrinovich cautiously going for that attack.
00:31:12 - Into the final ten.
00:31:13 Five to go.
00:31:16 I don't think there was a touch there.
00:31:21 So three seconds now for Tomis to get the touch.
00:31:24 If it ticks to zero, Poland are victorious.
00:31:26 You would imagine that Larnowich takes a step back.
00:31:30 Tomis will probably attack this.
00:31:32 Three to go.
00:31:34 - Goes for the flesh and Lavrinovich with that counter six.
00:31:37 It's a win for Poland.
00:31:41 - So Poland move two points ahead of Egypt now.
00:31:43 Building that advantage over third.
00:31:49 - Let me tell you, with Matas Mohamed being in that team,
00:31:55 I think they really have to build up quite a bit here.
00:31:58 - Yeah, they've got to win every round.
00:31:59 - Yeah, they've got to win every round.
00:32:00 - Yeah, they've got to win every round.
00:32:02 - Yeah, they've got to win every battle, haven't they?
00:32:04 I think that's the pressure they have to put on themselves now.
00:32:07 If they want to try and claw their way back into this competition after this point in the ride.
00:32:11 - Yeah, that guy's lightning fast.
00:32:13 - Yeah, Matas Mohamed is scary quick, isn't he?
00:32:15 I mean, handles over three laps, I think she'll do well, won't she?
00:32:20 Yeah.
00:32:20 What about the swimming? Are they quick swimmers?
00:32:23 - Yeah, they are actually one of the best swimmers out there.
00:32:27 I think we might even see a sub two.
00:32:31 - It'll be interesting to see, won't it?
00:32:32 That's not ruled out any possibility yet.
00:32:36 It is Poland now up against...
00:32:40 I guess the disadvantage for Egypt is now they only have the chance to complete in the two fencing bonus round bout,
00:32:47 because obviously it's Italy up next, so they could only win four points.
00:32:51 Sorry, it's Mexico.
00:32:52 Oh, okay, so Mexico haven't withdrawn.
00:32:58 So apologies on that misinformation.
00:33:01 So Mexico are still a part of this competition.
00:33:11 They obviously won't be...
00:33:26 So Mexico still in the mix.
00:33:28 Six teams here in Ankara as Mariana Arceo goes against Margarzata Karbovnik.
00:33:35 It's 1-0 for Poland.
00:33:40 A second win here would be good for them.
00:33:45 Heading into that laser run, Mariana Arceo is very aggressive at this stage.
00:33:50 Looking for that parry.
00:33:51 Margarzata, that bit of extra reach goes down and...
00:33:58 Mexico.
00:33:59 Touch.
00:34:01 Tie score. 1-1.
00:34:03 Next touch win. 1-1.
00:34:05 1-1. Poland on the left, Mexico on the right.
00:34:19 Mexico.
00:34:24 So Poland looking to continue this run here.
00:34:28 Mexico are really competing for experience now.
00:34:32 They won't be winning medals, but it's good to see that they've carried on the competition.
00:34:36 Still curious to find out what it was that happens to prevent them from riding.
00:34:40 Double touch.
00:34:42 Remember, it's a 1-1, so the next touch does win this bout.
00:34:46 Yep.
00:34:47 Time priority, of course, is with the Mexicans.
00:34:53 Turn to go.
00:34:54 Oh, gets a bit scrappy now into the final five.
00:34:58 And Mexico get the touch.
00:35:01 Effectively, it doesn't change anything for Mexico.
00:35:06 I mean, they have a 0 on the right, so there's no chance of a medal for sure.
00:35:11 The advantage over Turkey is significant too.
00:35:19 It almost becomes a training exercise effectively now for Mexico, doesn't it?
00:35:25 And a good training exercise, don't get me wrong.
00:35:27 It's great to practice in and they'll take their later on time and compare it against other later runs.
00:35:33 There's still a lot they can gain from this.
00:35:35 Same for Turkey as well.
00:35:36 Yeah, absolutely.
00:35:37 I mean, withdrawing from the competition completely is your last resort if you have an injury or any of that.
00:35:44 But continuing on is definitely a good thing.
00:35:49 So Mexico stay on the piste and we welcome Italy, Aurora Tognetti and Federico Alessandro.
00:35:58 Tognetti, a very good fencer.
00:36:08 But it is Mariana Arceo, just as I say that, with, I think it was a wrist touch.
00:36:13 It's quite quick from Arceo.
00:36:15 Mexico just preventing anyone from getting extra points here.
00:36:19 They are still having their impact on this competition.
00:36:22 Competing now with no pressure.
00:36:26 So Padilla next and Federico.
00:36:33 Mexico with one touch so far.
00:36:43 Italy.
00:36:47 Being very aggressive here.
00:36:51 They know they need to get a point.
00:36:53 It's 20 seconds on the clock.
00:36:55 Manuel Padilla is waiting for an attack and there you have it.
00:36:59 That counter-court.
00:37:01 Beautiful job from Manuel Padilla gives the Mexicans a second win.
00:37:07 Next up, the team from Egypt.
00:37:11 We put the pressure on them, didn't we?
00:37:13 We lay down the gauntlet and we said they need to win all of their bouts.
00:37:16 It's only going to be two bouts that they'll be taking part in.
00:37:21 So there's only a maximum of four points.
00:37:23 But given that Poland did win one of theirs, they've slipped two points further back.
00:37:27 Every point could be vital in this battle.
00:37:29 So it's a very good game.
00:37:31 Poland did win one of theirs, they've slipped two points further back.
00:37:34 Every point could be vital in this battle for medals.
00:37:37 Marta and Mohamed will be starting things off against Manuel Padilla.
00:37:45 These athletes have fenced each other before.
00:37:49 They've fenced each other in the qualification.
00:37:51 Of the finals, of course.
00:37:59 Manuel Padilla needs to be aggressive now.
00:38:01 Time priority is with the Egyptians.
00:38:03 Matas Mohamed is being cautious.
00:38:06 And there you have it, another wrist touch.
00:38:08 Matas Mohamed with the win.
00:38:11 As we hand things over to the women to finish up this bout.
00:38:15 Amira Enzil, we know she's a good fencer.
00:38:18 Struggles a bit with the laser run.
00:38:20 But again, we only have three times 600 meters today.
00:38:23 So it should be okay.
00:38:26 Mariana Arceo and Amira Enzil.
00:38:29 Here we go then.
00:38:46 The chance now for Egypt to pick up those extra points if Andal can get past us.
00:38:54 So two very experienced pentathletes here, two very experienced fencers.
00:38:58 This is, I think, probably the most exciting bout we've had of the fencing bonus round here in mixed relay.
00:39:04 Andal and Arceo getting scrappy.
00:39:06 And Andal gets the touch and ends Mexico's streak of two wins.
00:39:11 One extra victory for Andal.
00:39:13 Moves them back on level points with Poland.
00:39:16 Egypt over Mexico 2-0.
00:39:19 Egypt over Mexico 2-0.
00:39:23 So back to where they were, 10 points behind Poland.
00:39:29 Egypt are our final team. This will be the last match.
00:39:32 Egypt stay down the beach.
00:39:34 We welcome our next team.
00:39:36 Final bout, Kazakhstan versus Egypt.
00:39:40 Any chance of Egypt catching Kazakhstan, do you think?
00:39:42 Is there any hope of that?
00:39:43 Honestly, I'm not... That's kind of hard.
00:39:47 I mean, what I'm saying is it's impossible with these...
00:39:50 If they pick up these four points now, that's it, it's done.
00:39:53 This... I mean...
00:39:55 Yeah.
00:39:56 We're trying to build a narrative that probably doesn't exist here, but...
00:39:59 Kazakhstan with that amazing fence earlier in the day.
00:40:05 Mira Enzil versus Elena Potapenko.
00:40:08 Mira Enzil is aggressive, trying to look for that blade.
00:40:11 Elena Potapenko trying to go for that low line.
00:40:13 She is, of course, a left-handed fencer.
00:40:16 Makes it a bit harder for Mira Enzil.
00:40:18 Goes for that flush, but Elena Potapenko on the outside
00:40:21 gets the touch against Mira Enzil.
00:40:24 Hands over to her partner, Ilya Shchenko and Matas Mohamed
00:40:30 for the conclusion of this bonus round.
00:40:34 So, final bout.
00:40:39 [INAUDIBLE]
00:40:42 So, chance now for Kazakhstan to increase their lead by four.
00:40:54 Matas needs the double header here to stop them.
00:41:00 Final bout, this. Mohamed versus Ilya Shchenko.
00:41:06 Ilya Shchenko gets the touch here and Kazakhstan extend their lead by four
00:41:10 into the final 20.
00:41:12 Oh, gets scrapped.
00:41:14 But I think Ilya Shchenko did get a touch there. He did.
00:41:17 Which give Kazakhstan those extra four points,
00:41:20 which moves them ahead now of Italy by 25 seconds.
00:41:25 And that is a big gap.
00:41:27 Yeah, this is looking like it's going to be Kazakhstan taking gold already.
00:41:34 We still have to swim. 46 seconds, the gap between Egypt and Kazakhstan.
00:41:38 And the reason I'm focusing on this battle between Egypt and Kazakhstan
00:41:41 is because Egypt, of course, is a strong team.
00:41:43 I think that they could make up time.
00:41:46 I think they could be on the podium, not necessarily in first.
00:41:50 And that's not playing down the relevance of Poland and Italy,
00:41:55 who have strong teams as well.
00:41:56 It's just trying to keep the idea of four teams still being in the mix
00:42:01 for that battle for gold.
00:42:03 So just seeing replays there of that final battle between Mohamed and Ilya Shchenko.
00:42:14 Big smiles on everybody's faces.
00:42:16 Yeah, mixed relay is more relaxed than individuals for sure.
00:42:22 Definitely. Let's take a look at those scores then.
00:42:24 Kazakhstan top, Italy in second place.
00:42:30 That gap has grown to 25 points.
00:42:34 It's 20, the difference between second and third.
00:42:38 Italy on 514, Poland on 494.
00:42:42 And then the gap restored back down to 10 points between Poland and Egypt.
00:42:47 I think Egypt could make a step forward in the swimming
00:42:52 if they swim as well as we know they can and put pressure on Poland.
00:42:56 It might be a little bit difficult to put pressure on the top two,
00:43:00 but this is pentathlon. Everything can change in an instant.
00:43:04 We're done with the fencing. Let's watch the replays.
00:43:06 And then we will be back after the highlights building up to the swimming.
00:43:12 [Music]
00:43:15 [Music]
00:43:18 [Music]
00:43:21 [Music]
00:43:23 [Music]
00:43:33 [Music]
00:43:43 [Music]
00:43:45 So that concludes the fencing here in mixed relay in World Cup number two in Ankara.
00:44:01 We had the ranking round earlier on and we just finished the bonus round.
00:44:06 Let's look at how things move over to the pool then.
00:44:09 This is a quick walk and of course this is mixed relay.
00:44:13 So each athlete will swim 100 meters, hand over to their partner,
00:44:18 and the other partner swims 100 meters.
00:44:20 And as always, we will be starting with the women.
00:44:23 And since there are only six teams here in Ankara,
00:44:28 we'll just have one heat of this mixed relay.
00:44:31 So it should fly by pretty quick because James is out in the field
00:44:35 and trying to get you live words from the coaches and athletes watching over.
00:44:40 And we just wait as the athletes make their way,
00:44:48 change in between that quick bonus round into their swimming kit.
00:44:55 I don't know if you can hear it in the background.
00:45:01 The Turkish team is a big roundup of Turkish cheerleaders in the background there.
00:45:10 You can see kids and people of all ages out here and trying to support them.
00:45:14 They will not be competing for a medal since they did not do the ride.
00:45:20 But again, it's good experience for those young athletes.
00:45:23 I'll just leave that cheer for you guys to hear in the background.
00:45:30 (Turkish cheer)
00:45:35 Ha!
00:45:36 That's good television for you guys.
00:45:41 Big turn up for the Turkish team.
00:45:43 You can see them right there.
00:45:45 And you're shot in all the people in support of them.
00:45:49 So we're just over five minutes to go.
00:45:56 So the start of the swim.
00:45:58 We only have one heat as previously mentioned.
00:46:01 So this is going to fly by really quickly.
00:46:04 As things stand, it seems like Kazakhstan do have the lead
00:46:12 and will continue to hold on to that lead heading into that laser run.
00:46:16 Let's throw to James in the field.
00:46:20 Yes, I have the Egyptian coach.
00:46:24 Let's start by reflecting on the atmosphere here in Ankara, Turkey.
00:46:28 It's brilliant fun, isn't it?
00:46:30 Everyone's enjoying themselves.
00:46:31 The crowd are really getting into this and it just adds to the level of the competition.
00:46:34 It's amazing in here.
00:46:36 To be honest, I didn't expect to have this crowd during the mixed relay.
00:46:40 But you can see everyone is excited.
00:46:43 I can see that there's going to be a big potential in this country
00:46:47 when looking at the people coming and following and enjoying what we have here.
00:46:53 This great stadium has a lot of things to do with the spectators we have.
00:46:59 When you have everything in the same place, nice weather,
00:47:03 except with a few hours yesterday, it feels great.
00:47:06 You can hear the crowd. It's amazing.
00:47:09 Your athletes, Mohamed and Amira, have dropped down to fourth place,
00:47:14 but only ten points off of Poland in third.
00:47:18 Is their competition now about trying to get bronze?
00:47:22 I think it's going to be a good fight.
00:47:24 I think for bronze and silver, we are talking about Italy, Egypt and Poland.
00:47:29 All of them are strong competitors.
00:47:34 Kazakhstan have gone. Do you think they're going to win a gold?
00:47:36 Kazakhstan is like...
00:47:39 Unless something really bad happens.
00:47:43 But we don't wish anyone anything bad. They are in a good place.
00:47:47 Both of them are very well experienced.
00:47:49 I think the fight is going to be for silver and bronze.
00:47:53 Yasser, you're very much becoming our field of play reporter here.
00:47:56 We'll try and catch up with you ahead of the laser run.
00:47:59 Good luck for the rest of the competition, for your team and all the teams as well.
00:48:02 Thank you very much, James.
00:48:04 And you know, five minutes for $50. I'm just kidding.
00:48:07 Thank you very much.
00:48:08 Thanks, Yasser. I appreciate it. Cheers.
00:48:09 That was Yasser Hafni, the Egyptian head coach,
00:48:13 obviously here for their team.
00:48:16 Emirhan Dilamont has Mohamed, one team you don't want to mess around with.
00:48:21 They are currently in fourth place,
00:48:24 so it's going to be hard for them to move up the standings.
00:48:26 But again, with a quick swim here, things can turn around pretty quickly
00:48:30 as Kazakhstan still lead the way and Poland and Italy following.
00:48:35 So we're just two minutes away from the start of the swim.
00:48:39 We'll have again, only one heat, six teams will be joining.
00:48:45 And ordered in their current standings.
00:48:48 So Kazakhstan will be in lane number one, Italy in lane number two,
00:48:52 Poland in lane number three, Egypt in lane number four,
00:48:55 Mexico in five, and Turkey in six.
00:48:58 [Speaking in foreign language]
00:49:06 [Silence]
00:49:17 [Indistinct chatter]
00:49:29 So those are your six teams of this mixed relay swimming heat.
00:49:35 It's going to be a tight battle for gold silver and bronze,
00:49:38 although Kazakhstan still hold very good lead.
00:49:41 I think the athletes further behind pretty quick on the laser run arena.
00:49:46 There you have it, six teams.
00:49:51 Lane of Potapenko, Ilyaschenko in lane number one,
00:49:54 Tagnyaty and Alessandro from Italy in lane number two,
00:49:56 Karbovnik, Lavrnovich from Poland in lane number three,
00:49:59 Kandyl, Mohamed in lane number four,
00:50:01 and Padilla, Arteo in lane number five,
00:50:03 Tevez and Bogdan in lane number six from Turkey.
00:50:07 Take a breath, Marianne.
00:50:08 I think that's the quickest I ever heard you speak.
00:50:10 Well done. Good introduction of the athletes one by one
00:50:13 as they make their way out onto the swimming arena.
00:50:16 Which is, and I don't think we've ever heard that.
00:50:19 The atmosphere was incredible, wasn't it?
00:50:22 Yeah, I don't think I've ever heard that much supporters in mixed relay.
00:50:27 Well, Pan American Games Santiago 2023.
00:50:32 I sound corrected.
00:50:34 Sorry to correct you, but yeah,
00:50:36 it was a packed stadium, a thousand fans all up on their feet,
00:50:39 cheering and stuff.
00:50:41 That was pretty good.
00:50:43 The mixed relay here in Turkey, the locals doing themselves proud.
00:50:48 How loud was it from here?
00:50:49 Really loud. Yeah, I think it was...
00:50:53 Not something you needed to commentate over, I'm assuming.
00:50:56 No, yeah, I just let them do their thing.
00:50:59 Boca Panco and Iliasenko are absolutely in a league of their own
00:51:05 in Turkey.
00:51:09 He's a buddy, as I said.
00:51:15 He has to have the Egyptian head coach.
00:51:18 I'm not sure we can afford him for the second in the world.
00:51:22 Don't say.
00:51:24 He's a fun guy.
00:51:26 He's got some good lines from him as well, don't you?
00:51:28 Togeti and Alexandru comfortably in second place.
00:51:33 The quickest team will be the team from Egypt.
00:51:35 I'm pretty certain of that.
00:51:37 I just don't think there's going to be too much of a shuffling here
00:51:41 in terms of mixing things up ahead of the laser run.
00:51:46 But there will, I'm sure, be a battle for bronze.
00:51:49 I think that's something we can really look forward to and get stuck into.
00:51:52 Not that we're not going to be enjoying the gold and silver medals, of course,
00:51:56 but you do have to see the drama and attention that inevitably comes from
00:52:01 laser run at the end of the competition.
00:52:04 Egypt on their way out.
00:52:08 The heat we have here.
00:52:11 Arseo and Badia.
00:52:16 Yeah, just strolling to those boxes as if they're not going to race in
00:52:20 less than a minute.
00:52:22 And Turkey with that big cheer, I'm sure you can hear,
00:52:26 is out next in lane number six.
00:52:29 Those are our six athletes competing in the mixed relay.
00:52:37 So it's 100 meters each.
00:52:40 As always, the women start first, and it's off to the men to finish things off.
00:52:46 I really want to see some sub-two-minute times.
00:52:49 It's obviously hard to predict what these athletes are going to swim
00:52:52 because it's a two-person effort.
00:52:56 Yeah, I think sub-two-minute is very possible.
00:53:05 Here we go then.
00:53:07 The athletes preparing themselves on the start of this very exciting
00:53:18 competition.
00:53:21 Conclusion of our penultimate discipline.
00:53:24 Here we go.
00:53:25 In the pool they go.
00:53:27 And it is flat out.
00:53:29 I love this about mixed relay swimming.
00:53:31 There's no holding back.
00:53:32 It's only 100 meters.
00:53:33 Four laps of this 25-meter pool.
00:53:35 First 25 meters done in 13 or so seconds.
00:53:39 Yeah, Mira and Dil have taken the early lead of this race,
00:53:41 but it is pretty tight.
00:53:42 Again, it's only 100 meters.
00:53:44 Karbovnik is now pulling away.
00:53:47 She looks like she's going to be heading into that second turn
00:53:51 first at the wall.
00:53:52 It's going to be pretty tight between those two.
00:53:54 Karbovnik and Dil.
00:53:55 0.39 separating the top three.
00:53:59 This is quick swimming.
00:54:03 You can see the male athletes already preparing themselves here.
00:54:06 Yeah, this is the final turn for the women's as they touch the wall
00:54:09 and the men take it from there.
00:54:12 You will see six male athletes launching themselves into this pool
00:54:18 in a matter of moments.
00:54:22 They've just got to touch the wall first.
00:54:25 It's Karbovnik.
00:54:26 Off they go.
00:54:27 They need to get out of the pool pretty quick because the men are going
00:54:30 to be heading back to that wall any second now.
00:54:33 Look at...
00:54:34 Is that Lavrinovich?
00:54:35 Who is that?
00:54:37 It's really close, this, isn't it?
00:54:40 I think we could see a couple of sub two-minute times here, by the way.
00:54:50 Yeah, Lissandro for Italy is doing some quick swimming here.
00:54:54 Mohammed is in first, though.
00:54:57 It looks like it's going to go to Egypt.
00:54:59 It is pretty tight.
00:55:00 It is pretty tight, isn't it?
00:55:02 It's an ultimate lap now.
00:55:05 Yeah, final 25 meters.
00:55:06 This is going by fast.
00:55:07 We're going to get some sub two minutes here.
00:55:09 I'm sure of it.
00:55:10 I think it might be Egypt.
00:55:12 If Muhtas Mohammed can keep this pace going.
00:55:15 Flying towards the finish line.
00:55:16 Egypt looking to chip away on that lead that Poland have on them
00:55:21 in the battle for bronze.
00:55:22 It's a 1.58.2 for Egypt.
00:55:25 Italy coming home in second place.
00:55:26 Poland in third.
00:55:28 And interestingly, Kazakhstan a little bit further back.
00:55:30 So that gap has been chipped away at in those various battles.
00:55:34 Italy have taken a little bit of a time out of the battle for first.
00:55:40 Poland have lost effectively eight points.
00:55:43 So that gap between Egypt and Poland is now being reduced to two seconds or so.
00:55:49 That's interesting.
00:55:50 Kazakhstan is going to probably lose ten points as well from that swim.
00:55:54 Yeah.
00:55:55 This is closing things nicely.
00:55:57 Yeah.
00:56:01 Just look at the replays then from that heat and our only heat of this mixed relay.
00:56:07 So just seeing those replays.
00:56:27 And that, of course, the point in which the men took over.
00:56:31 That's the moment they touched.
00:56:38 Muhtas Mohammed, which things off nicely a 1.58.
00:56:46 Let's take a look at the scores.
00:56:49 And it's closed that gap down to 20 points now.
00:56:55 I'll tell you what, this is a bit closer than we thought it was going to be.
00:56:58 20 points the gap between Kazakhstan and Italy in a one pad laser shooting round.
00:57:02 And that immediately eliminates that lead.
00:57:06 24 points the gap between second and third.
00:57:10 If Egypt were to have the absolute perfect laser run.
00:57:17 And I'm talking six second shoots with all four shoots.
00:57:22 Sprinting around all six laps.
00:57:26 46 seconds.
00:57:28 If Poland was to have the perfect laser run.
00:57:33 44 seconds.
00:57:35 One more question.
00:57:36 If Italy were to have the perfect round.
00:57:40 20 seconds.
00:57:41 We're going to get Maren's thoughts on all those questions in a couple of moments time.
00:57:45 Don't go anywhere folks.
00:57:46 We're going to have a replay of the swimming before we have our build up to the start of the laser run.
00:57:53 We'll be back.
00:57:54 [Music]
00:57:57 [Music]
00:58:00 [Music]
00:58:03 [Music]
00:58:06 [Music]
00:58:08 [Music]
00:58:18 [Music]
00:58:28 [Music]
00:58:30 [Music]
00:58:36 That concludes the swimming discipline here on the mixed relay in Ankara.
00:58:45 That's the penultimate discipline before we move over to laser run arena.
00:58:49 As always to figure out who will be our top three athletes.
00:58:53 Before that let's take a look at how things move from the pool to the laser run.
00:58:57 The athletes will of course be running three times 600 meters per gender.
00:59:03 The women as always will start first and two shooting series for each athlete.
00:59:08 For a total of four shooting series and six times 600 meters per team.
00:59:13 The first over the finish line as always will be crowned the winner.
00:59:19 This is World Cup number two.
00:59:21 We're here in Ankara and it's the mixed relay day.
00:59:27 So things are bright and sunny here in Ankara as the athletes change their kits and move over to the laser run.
00:59:35 Yeah, start of the laser run not too far off then.
00:59:46 We will head track side to see if we can grab some interviews.
00:59:49 But it feels like they are potentially going to be a little bit slower in getting things underway.
00:59:57 Because swimming discipline just flew past, didn't it?
01:00:00 It's the quickest I've ever seen it go by.
01:00:04 So there we go.
01:00:06 It's now a bit of work for the coaches to do to get themselves raring to go.
01:00:12 The shooting range looks so small, doesn't it?
01:00:15 With six targets.
01:00:17 It's kind of cute, isn't it? Small.
01:00:19 Yeah, I mean, every other target has been pulled down and this competition is nearing the end.
01:00:25 Six targets, six teams.
01:00:27 The athletes will have both men and women will shoot on the same target.
01:00:36 You can see the coaches just putting the numbers on their running shirts.
01:00:52 This is going to be a short transition for all the athletes since they're all swimming in the same heat and starting at the same time.
01:01:00 I think that's Emira Anzalia already in her running gear and taking her pistol, heading over to the range as Muathaz Mohamed will join her shortly.
01:01:12 This is one of the quickest transitions I think we've ever seen.
01:01:18 None of these athletes had time to...
01:01:19 Well, they have only eight minutes and 57 seconds to go.
01:01:22 So they're going to have to get themselves warmed up, aren't they?
01:01:25 And I think the shooting range closes like three minutes before as well.
01:01:30 I think Andel got the message and is making her way to the shooting range now.
01:01:44 Right, let's head trackside. I'm going to go and try and find some interviews, Mariam.
01:01:47 And I'll be back in a moment's time. We'll leave you with describing and building up to the laser run.
01:01:52 So again, just over eight minutes to go to the start of this laser run.
01:01:57 And some exciting potential medalists in the making.
01:02:03 I mean, Kazakhstan have a 20 second lead over Italy.
01:02:08 They're both very experienced athletes, so it's hard to rule them out for gold, to be honest.
01:02:12 But I think that Italy, Poland and Egypt could all be in the mix for silver and bronze, that's for sure.
01:02:20 Italy is 20 seconds behind the leader. We've already said that.
01:02:23 And 22 seconds behind them is Poland, as we drop down only two seconds back to fourth with Egypt.
01:02:32 So Egypt definitely in with a shot for a medal.
01:02:36 As for the bottom two teams, well, they, of course, did not compete in the ride, so no medal positions for them.
01:02:43 But they will be competing for experience.
01:02:47 And for the team from Mexico, you feel like they would be competing next week in Budapest.
01:02:53 So we'll just take this as a training session, let's say.
01:02:58 These athletes really have no time to warm up.
01:03:01 Just over seven minutes as they run to the range.
01:03:05 That's kind of the beginning of their warm up. I'm not sure if you can hear in the background.
01:03:09 The Turkish audience is really making an appearance here in this Pentathlon stadium,
01:03:20 supporting the Turkish team and just watching Pentathlon unfold.
01:03:28 Spectators are packed on the beaches.
01:03:34 This promises to be an exciting race. The top four athletes will really be pushing to their max.
01:03:43 The athletes are now just doing their finishing touches, shooting in the range a couple of times before they have to go to that start/finish line
01:03:54 and start the race.
01:03:57 The Turkish team is now in the lead.
01:04:04 And the Turkish team is now in the lead.
01:04:10 And the Turkish team is now in the lead.
01:04:16 And the Turkish team is now in the lead.
01:04:29 And the Turkish team is now in the lead.
01:04:49 And the Turkish team is now in the lead.
01:04:59 And the Turkish team is now in the lead.
01:05:09 And the Turkish team is now in the lead.
01:05:29 And the Turkish team is now in the lead.
01:05:49 And the Turkish team is now in the lead.
01:06:09 And the Turkish team is now in the lead.
01:06:29 And the Turkish team is now in the lead.
01:06:49 And the Turkish team is now in the lead.
01:07:09 And the Turkish team is now in the lead.
01:07:29 And the Turkish team is now in the lead.
01:07:49 And the Turkish team is now in the lead.
01:07:59 And the Turkish team is now in the lead.
01:08:09 And the Turkish team is now in the lead.
01:08:29 And the Turkish team is now in the lead.
01:08:39 And the Turkish team is now in the lead.
01:08:49 And the Turkish team is now in the lead.
01:09:09 And the Turkish team is now in the lead.
01:09:29 And the Turkish team is now in the lead.
01:09:49 And the Turkish team is now in the lead.
01:10:09 And the Turkish team is now in the lead.
01:10:29 And the Turkish team is now in the lead.
01:10:49 And the Turkish team is now in the lead.
01:11:09 And the Turkish team is now in the lead.
01:11:29 And the Turkish team is now in the lead.
01:11:49 And the Turkish team is now in the lead.
01:12:09 And the Turkish team is now in the lead.
01:12:29 And the Turkish team is now in the lead.
01:12:49 And the Turkish team is now in the lead.
01:13:09 And the Turkish team is now in the lead.
01:13:29 And the Turkish team is now in the lead.
01:13:49 And the Turkish team is now in the lead.
01:14:09 And the Turkish team is now in the lead.
01:14:29 And the Turkish team is now in the lead.
01:14:49 And the Turkish team is now in the lead.
01:15:09 And the Turkish team is now in the lead.
01:15:29 And the Turkish team is now in the lead.
01:15:49 And the Turkish team is now in the lead.
01:16:09 And the Turkish team is now in the lead.

01:28:33 >> Pretty quick run.
01:28:41 Handed over to her partner.
01:28:43 Some struggles in the range.
01:28:45 If that race were to continue for one more lap, I think we
01:28:48 could have seen Egypt up there in gold.
01:28:52 But again, it was a fantastic effort from the team from
01:28:54 Kazakhstan.
01:28:58 >> Great effort from the team from Kazakhstan.
01:29:03 Greater portion of this race.
01:29:08 Bad shooting was what caused them that silver medal.
01:29:12 But they still came home in bronze.
01:29:17 That silver was taken by Mohammed at the end there with a
01:29:22 fantastic finish.
01:29:25 >> Incredible performances we are seeing across the field.
01:29:32 Struggling a bit with his shoot.
01:29:35 But that was enough.

01:31:13 Kazakhstan in first.
01:31:16 It was just under ten seconds.
01:31:19 Nine seconds between Kazakhstan and Egypt.
01:31:22 If that race were to open up for one more lap, maybe Egypt would
01:31:26 have stolen that gold.
01:31:29 Italy in third.
01:31:31 Poland in fourth.
01:31:33 Mexico in fifth.
01:31:35 And the European team in fifth.
01:31:38 >> Congratulations.
01:31:40 It is a bronze medal under the sun here in Ankara.
01:31:43 A difficult day for you guys.
01:31:45 You have had to work hard for this.
01:31:47 We will start with you.
01:31:49 Talk to us about your day.
01:31:51 >> It is a really good day.
01:31:54 After the individual, for me it is like a revenge because I
01:31:58 didn't pass to the semifinal.
01:32:01 I didn't have the right emotion to take something good.
01:32:06 We are so satisfied.
01:32:10 Now we go to -- to -- to -- to cheers with our coaches for the
01:32:21 medal.
01:32:22 >> Congratulations.
01:32:24 Federico, the battle you had with Muhammad was crazy to watch.
01:32:28 How did it feel to be the first to win the medal?
01:32:32 How did it feel to be the first to win the medal?
01:32:35 How did it feel to be the first to win the medal?
01:32:38 >> My shooting today was not good.
01:32:41 In fact, after the last shooting, my coaches said there
01:32:48 is a -- I said, oh, my God, I must run very, very fast.
01:32:54 I must run very, very fast.
01:32:58 I am happy for the competition.
01:33:01 I am happy for my coaches.
01:33:04 For my city.
01:33:05 For my country.
01:33:06 All people.
01:33:08 >> Your city and your country are watching back home.
01:33:11 I am sure for you too.
01:33:13 Just have a quick word in Italian for your friends and
01:33:16 family watching back home.
01:33:18 >> Thank you.
01:33:24 >> Congratulations.
01:33:25 Thank you so much.
01:33:27 >> So congratulations for the team from Italy coming home in
01:33:31 bronze.
01:33:32 It was a tough road for them.
01:33:34 They didn't have the best of ranking rounds and obviously has
01:33:39 competed in the individuals here in Ankara and didn't have the
01:33:43 best of luck.
01:33:44 So this, as she said in her own words, was the best revenge.
01:33:49 Grabbing a medal at a World Cup series is something to be proud
01:33:54 of for sure as we look forward to the next interview.
01:33:59 I think it is going to be with our silver medalists.
01:34:03 Let's go to James.
01:34:05 >> Congratulations on a silver medal, another medal for Egypt.
01:34:09 A tough day for you guys.
01:34:11 Obviously you had work to do after the riding.
01:34:14 Talk to us about how you got back into the competition and
01:34:18 ended up second place on the podium.
01:34:20 >> We started very good in the fencing ranking round and we got
01:34:25 some mistakes in the horse riding because the horse, it is
01:34:30 really difficult when they jump.
01:34:32 It is like a hard jump, you know.
01:34:35 And when I saw Moatez in the course, I was so scared before
01:34:42 him.
01:34:43 >> I was about to die three times.
01:34:45 >> No, no, Moatez, please.
01:34:47 And after that, we started the laser run in the first place.
01:34:51 And I know, and we take the third place for me, but Moatez,
01:34:56 it is got a big fantastic day in the finish.
01:35:00 He can tell you about this finish.
01:35:03 >> Nicely thrown to Moatez.
01:35:05 Moatez, you are one of the most exciting athletes in the world
01:35:09 to watch at the minute.
01:35:11 Amira is saying how exciting you are to watch.
01:35:14 It is now three silver medals for you.
01:35:16 Another exciting laser run.
01:35:18 Talk to us about the day in the race from your point of view.
01:35:22 >> In the ranking round, I did like 50/50.
01:35:25 Amira did most of the work.
01:35:27 She is better than me.
01:35:30 At the horse riding, I got the difficult horse.
01:35:33 Coach told me it will be a great training on the difficult horse.
01:35:39 After in the warming up, in the horse riding, it was good.
01:35:45 I didn't have like many problems.
01:35:48 When I start, I made the first obstacle good.
01:35:51 At second obstacle, I got like two stops.
01:35:55 I was about to fall.
01:35:57 I tried to fight because I had two stops.
01:36:00 It will be the last one.
01:36:02 If I stop, we will take elimination.
01:36:04 But thanks God, I could control myself on the horse
01:36:08 and made the horse riding.
01:36:12 At the swimming, it was not--
01:36:16 >> Swimming is so easy.
01:36:18 >> During talking, the swimming.
01:36:21 It's like it's only 100 meters.
01:36:24 Close your eyes and finish the competition.
01:36:27 >> One breath. >> One breath, yes.
01:36:30 >> At the laser run, we started in the first place.
01:36:33 Amira, because she will participate in Budapest,
01:36:36 she had to save energy.
01:36:38 At the finish, she didn't do great finish.
01:36:41 She can rest.
01:36:43 >> To be honest, I was a little bit tired.
01:36:46 >> But she did. >> Yeah.
01:36:49 >> When I start, I told myself I won't participate in Budapest.
01:36:53 So I had to make a great laser run, an excited one.
01:36:56 So I pushed myself to limits
01:37:00 because after the four days before, it was so hard today.
01:37:03 But I got this finish, and I told myself
01:37:06 I had to get the second place.
01:37:08 I will be the silver boy.
01:37:11 >> Thank you.
01:37:12 >> Three days continues. It's really, really hard.
01:37:15 >> Well done. You both seem very happy with this.
01:37:17 You have good chemistry between you two as teammates as well.
01:37:19 Just a quick word in Arabic for your many Egyptian friends and family watching.
01:37:23 >> [ Speaking Arabic ]
01:37:30 >> My friends, enjoy the podium. Thank you so much.
01:37:33 We'll see you in Budapest.
01:37:35 >> That was a fun one from the dynamic duo,
01:37:39 Amira and Amir and Mottaz Mohamed.
01:37:41 Fantastic pairing, those two.
01:37:43 And finished things off pretty nicely at the end there
01:37:46 with Mottaz snatching that silver away from Italy.
01:37:49 And that boy is one to look out for.
01:37:52 I mean, he's definitely in the running for Olympic qualifications.
01:37:55 We have a very strong Egyptian team.
01:37:57 But again, he proves time and time again that he's worthy of that position.
01:38:02 And we'll just have to go about in our way in the season
01:38:05 and see how things unfold with the Egyptian team.
01:38:07 But he's definitely one I have my money on
01:38:11 as we wait for James and the team from Kazakhstan with gold.
01:38:17 Let's go to James.
01:38:19 >> And actually almost kind of made it look a bit easy in the end there.
01:38:22 I know it wasn't. Talk to us about the day.
01:38:25 >> Oh, today was really lucky day for us.
01:38:28 We had nice fencing.
01:38:30 Some problems was in riding,
01:38:32 but we have a very big gap before other teams.
01:38:37 And we did it and very happy.
01:38:40 >> And talk to us about the laser run,
01:38:42 because, OK, you started with a good lead,
01:38:44 but equally you can't take away your attention from your shooting and from your running.
01:38:48 You have to remain focused.
01:38:49 And you did and managed to bring it home with a nice lead.
01:38:53 >> Yeah, it was some difficulties in shooting today.
01:38:59 But my first shooting was clear and it helps us.
01:39:04 But we are also good runners, so we had no problem.
01:39:09 >> And just how much confidence can a win like this give you in mixed relay in an Olympic year
01:39:15 that you can both take individually into your own competitions heading forward this year?
01:39:19 >> Of course, we become more confident in our every discipline today.
01:39:29 And I think next competition will be more comfortable in our individual.
01:39:34 >> Any messages for your friends and family watching back home?
01:39:37 >> I want to say thank you all, our coaches, my family, Pavel's family and everybody.
01:39:46 Thank you for your support.
01:39:48 >> Thank you so much. Enjoy the podium. Well done to both of you. Well done. Thank you.

01:43:24 Week break, and then Bulgaria.
01:43:27 It's a frantic year for the athletes as they continue their buildup, their preparations for Olympic year,
01:43:35 for the Paris Olympic Games, which will, of course, take place in August this summer,
01:43:41 the pinnacle of this sport, the opportunity for athletes to make a memory that will last them, no doubt about it, a lifetime.
01:43:51 >> Yeah, these athletes have worked hard for their positions.
01:43:54 Kazakhstan, the reigning leaders of the ranking round.
01:44:03 Kazakhstan always seems defensible in the mixed relays, by the way.
01:44:07 We see them come out on top regardless of which two are participating.
01:44:12 But here are your medalists.
