A off-shoot of cricket that originated in the back streets of Pakistan is gaining traction across suburban Australia. Tape Ball cricket has grown in popularity among South Asian communities in recent years and is something that enthusiasts claim could be the next big thing.

00:00This might look like your average amateur cricket match, but this group is playing Tapeball.
00:08It's slightly different to the traditional game and interest is booming across the globe.
00:13So here in Australia it's getting very popular, there are lots of new arrivals, new people
00:20coming from Pakistan, so they started playing here the tapeball as well.
00:25Tapeball is played with a tennis ball wrapped in electrical tape and a curved bat, sometimes
00:29with holes along the edge.
00:31It was one of the, like a great passion, like everyone was starting to think there's a new
00:35way of fast cricket.
00:37The sport started in Pakistan and is now played professionally, with crowd numbers there sometimes
00:43reaching more than 100,000, even more than at some cricket games.
00:47It's also given rise to some of the world's best bowlers.
00:50In Australia, tapeball is already a competitive sport.
00:53There were more big tournaments happening in Sydney as well as in Hobart, so in the
00:58last three, four years a lot of people have migrated to Hobart.
01:02People from Sri Lanka, India, even Nepali, Nepali people they play tapeball cricket as
01:07well.
01:08For these players, the sport also offers opportunities to connect with different migrant
01:12communities and put aside cultural barriers.
01:14When you play tapeball and different communities come and all that, it just brings us together
01:18man, it's better for everyone.
01:20Earlier this year, the England and Wales Cricket Board introduced a new tapeball tournament
01:24as a way of finding unique and future talent for their national sides.
01:29Tapeball enthusiasts warned Cricket Australia to follow suit.
01:32Cricket Australia says for now, it's focused on grassroots participation, but may consider
01:37a similar tournament in the future.
