00:00A reading program that enlists college students for tutors is a brainchild of the Department of
00:04Social Welfare and Development designed to ramp up learning and comprehension of school children
00:09in both elementary and high school levels. Our Denise Osorio tells us more.
00:17The Department of Social Welfare and Development on Tuesday revealed that
00:20based on a study conducted by the Department of Education during the recent pandemic,
00:25most children in the first and second grades, or approximately 27%, could not read or have
00:32difficulty reading. Thus, through the Tarabasa Tutoring Program, the DSWD aims to help children
00:38who struggle with reading by deploying college students willing to tutor their younger
00:43counterparts. DSWD NCR Spokesperson Attorney Noorjaniza Kalaka assured the tutorial program
00:50will not get in the way of the academics of the volunteer college student tutors.
00:54Partner state universities and colleges, or SUCs, assured to have it held during the school break.
01:16Currently, there are more than 160,000 beneficiaries of the Tarabasa program in the NCR,
01:22where SUCs focus to help college students in the lower-income sector to pass muster and become
01:28tutors. The DSWD added the tutors are deployed to schools not far from where they live
01:34to defray the traveling expenses of student volunteers. The Tarabasa project was soft
01:39launched in mid-2023, when they pilot-tested the program for Phase 1 and will possibly have
01:45its full-blown implementation in July this year, or mid-2024, after Phase 2.
