French President Emmanuel Macron has called snap legislative elections.
The unexpected decision comes off the back of a disastrous performance by Macron’s allies in the recent European parliamentary elections.
According to exit polls, Marine Le Pen’s National Rally party won about 32% of the vote, more than double the amount won by any other party. This has left Macron’s Renaissance party in a weak governing position.
According to experts, the move is designed to reclaim initiative and take Le Pen’s party off-guard, but the risk offers the far-right a shot at real political power after years on the sidelines.
