00:00 Hello OG! Welcome to our modern tropical house in the city. Let's go inside!
00:07 And upon entering, this is our lanai in front of the house. So this is my sister-in-law,
00:20 and my nephew Tommy and my mom. We usually relax here. So if you can see,
00:26 we put a kalachuchi tree to create shade in the lanai. And you can see the pond. Every time
00:34 we hear the water, it gives refreshing feels in the lanai. And this is the table in the middle.
00:42 Actually, it's a mango tree trunk. So the client just gave it to me.
00:47 He said he's going to throw it away. So I made a table to be the focal point of this area.
00:56 The dream of building this house started actually when my mom told me one day,
01:01 "The houses you're designing and building are beautiful. I hope one day we'll experience
01:08 your dad living in a house like that." So that's where the dream for them started.
01:13 And I told myself that what I'm going to build for them is a retirement house that they'll enjoy
01:20 for the rest of their lives. Before we go inside, this is our garage. So two cars can fit here.
01:29 And if you can see, the roof that I used in the garage is a solid polycarbonate roofing.
01:35 So its purpose is to light up our dining area inside. You can see, I used
01:42 cladding like stone tiles. And these slots are made of steel.
01:46 So I can achieve the feel of being outside the house.
01:50 Okay, we've seen the outside area. Let's go inside.
01:59 Oh, you're already here. So we're here in our living area.
02:08 Our design here in the living area is high ceiling because that's what we deprived in our old house.
02:15 So here, you can see our side garden. That's my favorite plant, guys.
02:20 So it's called Thai Constellation. We also put a sliding door here
02:26 because its purpose is actually cross ventilation.
02:29 The prevailing wind is here. So we also have another sliding door in the dining area.
02:34 You'll see it later. So that's where the natural air passes through.
02:39 Our chandelier is actually a local supplier.
02:43 So this one became the centerpiece in the living area because the design is very unique.
02:49 I got the inspiration for this house from the style of architecture that I'm promoting,
02:59 which is tropical architecture.
03:01 I said, "I want this house to be like a villa, like a resort."
03:07 Where you're in the city but you feel like you're in the province because there are a lot of plants.
03:13 And at the same time, promoting the natural lighting and ventilation in the house.
03:18 As you can see, our planning here in the house is what we call open plan.
03:27 So our living area, dining area, and show kitchen are connected
03:32 so that the house looks spacious.
03:34 I also like to connect paintings.
03:37 So this painting is by Nell Campos.
03:40 So here, you'll notice the sliding door that connects to the garage.
03:45 So sometimes when we have guests at night, we open this sliding door to connect to our dining area.
03:52 I also put what we call clerestory windows.
03:55 So that's what you'll see on the dining and living area.
04:00 The purpose of that is during the summer, when it's too hot,
04:03 we open our clerestory windows so that the hot air that builds up on the ceiling can be removed.
04:09 This is the main kitchen or our clean kitchen.
04:13 You'll notice that the main highlight is my dad's collection, his alcohols.
04:17 So it's very symbolic because he's the one who arranged this.
04:20 And we also used induction cooking in the clean kitchen
04:25 since heavy cooking doesn't happen here, it's just hot.
04:28 For the material, for the top, we used granite.
04:32 And then for the backsplash, porcelain tile.
04:35 For this part, we hid our water dispenser inside the cabinet.
04:41 So as you can see, it doesn't look ugly.
04:44 And at the same time, our refrigerator is black
04:48 because I dyed it with the color of our cabinets in the kitchen.
04:52 Come, let's go to the dirty kitchen.
04:55 So we're here in the dirty kitchen.
05:01 So in the dirty kitchen, the color I used is light color
05:05 since the light is limited in this part because we're in the firewall.
05:11 I put a solid wood countertop here
05:15 so that the preparation area is here since the space is limited.
05:19 So here, you'll notice that it's the same as the main kitchen.
05:22 I used porcelain tiles for the backsplash
05:26 and then granite for the countertop.
05:29 This is our laundry area.
05:34 So we invested in a washer that has a dryer
05:38 since the space is limited.
05:39 This is our drying area and at the same time, storage.
05:44 So you'll notice that I used a solid wood countertop
05:48 and a solid polycarbonate roofing.
05:51 The purpose of this is so that we can still dry our clothes even if it rains.
05:55 And this is our storage cabinet that is almost ceiling-high
06:01 for the clutter inside the house.
06:03 This project is very special to me
06:07 because my clients here are my parents and my family.
06:12 The most memorable moment that I experienced with my family in this house
06:17 was when we celebrated my dad's birthday
06:20 and at the same time, it was also the blessing of the house.
06:23 But unfortunately, after three months, my dad passed away because of a heart attack.
06:28 I'm still thankful because even though that happened,
06:31 he still experienced his dream of having a house.
06:34 I think the process is that I already know what the family needs.
06:38 Cons in building the house?
06:40 Maybe because you want to do a lot of things.
06:46 Sometimes, I prioritize small properties.
06:52 So this is the area that leads to the rooms.
06:58 This is where our altar is located, and of course, my dad's.
07:03 His picture is here.
07:04 We decided as a family to put it here
07:09 so that we can always remember him.
07:11 And I know that he's very proud of us all.
07:15 And here, as we go along,
07:17 we put our family pictures here.
07:21 We were with our dad.
07:23 So these are our memorable moments with him.
07:27 So one of them is the blessing of our house,
07:30 my brother's wedding,
07:33 and this is our first family picture together.
07:37 This door is our common bathroom.
07:44 As you can see, we used stone tiles here.
07:49 The ones on the wall and on the floor
07:53 to make it look tropical.
07:55 I bought this property last pandemic.
08:02 It's actually an old house,
08:04 but eventually, we demolished everything.
08:07 The lot size is around 240 square meters,
08:11 and the floor area is 150 square meters.
08:15 Mostly, I used sustainable materials in building the house.
08:20 I used PVC ceiling for exterior.
08:23 I also used driftwood inside the house
08:27 to refurbish the wooden floors.
08:31 And I make use of it to make the interior look better.
08:35 At the same time, I also used materials
08:38 that I know will last for a long time.
08:40 Even the cabinets are made of marine plywood
08:44 so that it won't absorb moisture.
08:47 And all the areas, as much as possible,
08:52 are made of tiles that will last a long time.
08:55 Let's go to the first bedroom.
09:00 This is my sister's bedroom.
09:04 As you can see, it has a different vibe.
09:08 I made it colorful.
09:11 The room is small but functional.
09:14 The second bedroom is my brother's family's bedroom.
09:21 It's a bit bigger than my sister's bedroom
09:25 because they're family.
09:26 And last but not the least,
09:31 let's go to the master's bedroom.
09:35 In the master's bedroom, my mom has her own bathroom.
09:42 It's the same concept.
09:43 We used tongue tiles inside.
09:45 This is her bed.
09:50 On top of her bed, I put an art piece
09:54 with indirect lighting.
09:56 And this one, this is her wardrobe cabinet.
10:00 I made it tinted glass
10:03 so that it looks spacious.
10:05 In this part, she has a reclining chair
10:08 so that when she wants to read,
10:10 she has light and a spotlight.
10:12 The total amount that we spent here in the house
10:19 is Php 4.8 million.
10:21 But when we were able to get the appliances,
10:25 the furniture, and the things we'll put in the house,
10:28 we also added around Php 5.6 million all in all.
10:32 The advice that I can give to all the children
10:36 who want to give back to their parents
10:41 is that we don't value the things we give to our parents.
10:48 What's important is what's from the heart.
10:50 And guys, welcome to our secret garden.
10:58 My mom often meditates here.
11:01 She often has a Zoom meeting here with her churchmates.
11:05 On this side, this is the side garden that I mentioned earlier
11:10 that has a view of the bedrooms.
11:12 And here, you'll notice that
11:14 the grass that we used is actually fake grass.
11:18 The advantage of this is easy maintenance.
11:20 You won't have to water it.
11:22 And at the same time, when it rains,
11:24 since the ground beneath it is also soil,
11:26 the rain will go straight there.
11:27 [music]
11:34 Thank you for joining me on this tour
11:36 of our modern tropical house in the city.
11:39 And to all the children who want to give back to their parents,
11:43 go, guys!
11:44 Give your best to your parents
11:47 because we won't be able to be with them here for the rest of their lives.
11:50 And that's it!
11:51 Thank you very much and goodbye!
