How Did Sponge Cola Get Their Band Name?

'Sponge' plus 'Cola'? What's that supposed to mean? Well, Sponge Cola frontman, Yael Yuzon is letting you in on that secret.

They say coming up with a band name can be difficult and frustrating to some artists, which can be surprising given the fact that there's always a wordsmith or two in the group. Perhaps inspiration really plays a huge role; prompting artists to be patient and wait for something that really represents their sound.

Yael and his friends did come up with a name that resonates with their music. Nope, they didn't just flip open a dictionary and try to intentionally misspell a word. But you could say they were able to keep it simple yet enigmatic and there's a couple of cultural references to thank for. 2020 marked the band's homecoming to Sony Music Entertainment, releasing Lumipas ang Tag-Araw in July and Siguro Nga - inspired by the popular KDrama Start-Up - in December. And as 2021 drawing to a close, the band keeps their sound alive.
