Saundersfoot Sailing Club had the honour of hosting the 2024 Saundersfoot New Year’s Day Swim presentation - recognising those that make it the largest Festive 'dash and splash' event in the UK.
NYDS Chairman, Chris Williams welcomed and thanked everyone for attending, along with the hardworking 'volunteer' committee members, as without their commitment and dedication it wouldn’t be possible to hold such a large scale event.
Also thanked, were the army of volunteers who assist year on year; the marshals that are operating; the water safety team who brave the elements; the emergency services, in particular Tenby Fire Station who have given up their time for over 20 years; the bucket collectors who help raise as much money as possible; the 2,500 swimmers who entered the water (and raised personal sponsorship); and finally, the spectators, who help to make it such an enjoyable spectacle.
Much praise was also given to the many organisations and businesses who assist: The RNLI, Tenby Surf Link, Pembrokeshire Paddlers, St Johns Ambulance, Saundersfoot Sailing Club, Police, The Odley Family (who keep the volunteer army and spectators refreshed), Pembrokeshire County Council and our event partners Saundersfoot Harbour, Hean Castle Estate, Saundersfoot Beach and Saundersfoot Community Council.

Chris said that the organisers were overwhelmed with the response, with just over 2,500 registered to enter online, raising in excess of £11,000!
Sponsors always play an integral part in the NYDS’ success and without their support, there would be no event. Thanked for their continued support and generosity were: Ocean Beach Grill Ltd; Neil Finlay Cars; S'foot Sports & Social Club; S'foot Beach Company; Fisher Family Builders; The Stone Crab; Tazzrock; Big Brums; Pro Waste; CBS; Janz Broadfield Farm; Pembrokeshire Laundry; Sterling Construction; Capitan Property Services; The Silver Lily; Trueform Ltd; M&M Windows; Lewis & Lewis Solicitors; Sunnyvale Caravan Site; Folly Farm; Broughton Caravans Ltd; Scaffold 2000; Fussell Builders; The Royal Oak; Elston Construction; The Snug; Saundersfoot Harbour; Hean Castle Estate; Saundersfoot Community Council; Travel Chapter; Mike Wealleans; Sue's Pantry; Rhodri Lewis; Welsh Coast Maintenance; Castle Homes; Caldey Construction.

During the presentation 45 charities and organisations received donations with a further 10 charities receiving swimmer sponsorship directly.
Chris added: "The NYDS Swim is an inclusive community based event run by dedicated volunteers and we will continue to support sporting clubs, local organisations, charities, people young and old and those who may benefit from financial support.
“Work is already progressing well for next year, with an emphasis on bigger and better.”

02:10 [APPLAUSE]
02:13 Thank you so much.
02:14 Thank you so much.
02:16 There we are as they make their way off.
02:19 I'm about to introduce to you the person who is going
02:23 to be starting to swim this year.
02:25 Please welcome on stage our former chairman of community
02:30 council here in Sordersveld, Mr. Martin Williams.
02:35 Give him a nice big round of applause.
02:36 [APPLAUSE]
02:38 Martin, do you know what?
02:40 It never ceases to amaze me.
02:42 You said, I made a speech for you at St. Bride's back
02:46 in the summer for the presentation night
02:48 when it was announced that you were retiring from the swim,
02:52 along with Steven, your son.
02:54 Steven is over there flapping like a chicken,
02:57 doing the timing.
02:58 And you are here constantly badgering me every five seconds.
03:03 You can't leave it alone, Martin, can you?
03:06 No, but it's the village.
03:08 It's all about the village.
03:10 And Chris has taken over.
03:11 He's done a phenomenal job.
03:14 Everybody, his new committee are up and running, outstanding.
03:19 Martin, you've been doing this for 39 years.
03:22 Does it ruin your Christmas, or do you look forward to it?
03:27 I didn't hear that.
03:28 Oh, OK.
03:29 It doesn't matter.
03:30 Listen, Martin, you were a former schoolteacher, weren't you?
03:33 Yes.
03:34 Yeah, and what did you teach?
03:36 Maths.
03:37 OK, so 14 times 9.
03:40 Oh, too late.
03:42 Too late.
03:43 Oh, dear me.
03:44 He didn't like that, did he?
03:45 Anyway, listen, give Martin a nice big round of applause.
03:48 [APPLAUSE]
03:49 Because he's going to start the swim with a countdown
03:53 and a wave of the flag.
03:55 Now, looking at the crowd here, this
03:59 is the biggest I have ever seen in my 30 years of comparing.
04:07 Yeah, you should clap yourself.
04:08 You really should.
04:11 It is just-- where I'm standing, it's phenomenal.
04:15 I've never seen anything like it.
04:17 And it goes right back into the back of the village.
04:20 Listen, I hope you have a good day today.
04:22 All the pubs will be open, of course.
04:25 If you fancy a bit of a disco, I'll
04:27 be doing a disco over the sports club later on this afternoon.
04:31 All the 70s, 80s, 90s, I'll be doing that.
04:35 That's at the sports club.
04:37 Right, well, ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls,
04:40 I think it's almost noon.
