What is culturally appropriate care for victim-survivors of domestic violence?

Remi King, a specialist First Nations support worker says the only proper way to support her Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander clients is through culturally appropriate, trauma informed care.

00:00 So in our everyday work with our clients, there's a lot of one-on-one contact with our women.
00:05 And a lot of the times if I'm working with an Aboriginal woman and she's coming from a background
00:10 where she might not have an education, maybe she finished high school, maybe she didn't,
00:15 maybe she's over the age of 50 or 60. I'm using a Bogan Occa way of speaking. I'm dropping F-bombs
00:24 and C-bombs and we're talking about the frustration of the system and I'm meeting her at where she's
00:30 at there. I'm not trying to tell her to be professional or appropriate and use nice language
00:36 because what she's been through is not nice. So the best way for me to connect with this woman
00:41 to provide culturally appropriate care is to use all these different mechanisms of language,
00:47 of sharing culture and sharing stories so that we can get an end result that's good for her.
