00:00 Thank you for joining us in this segment of CreateUp, and I'm your host, Rosalind Chiu.
00:06 Thank you, Mirza. And to discuss the theme of this CreateUp, which is "Cuan a la Startup"
00:11 The continuous packaging has been connected with us through Line Zoom, David Christian, the founder and CEO of EvoWare.
00:20 How are you, David?
00:22 I'm good, how are you?
00:25 Thank you for joining us. EvoWare is a platform that provides packaging and also environmentally friendly drinking water.
00:34 That's right. We provide more environmentally friendly plastic replacement equipment.
00:40 And if I'm not mistaken, you also provide glass in seaweed containers, right?
00:46 That's right.
00:48 So the glass can be eaten.
00:51 Let's talk about the awareness of the community, or maybe the need for packaging and also environmentally friendly drinking water.
00:58 What is the current development like?
01:01 So, we started EvoWare in 2016.
01:06 And since we started in 2016 until now, in 2024, we have seen a lot of changes in the government's regulations
01:18 and also the public's awareness, especially on the issue of plastic waste and plastic pollution.
01:25 So, from a business point of view, we have grown quite a bit, and from the order, it has grown quite a bit from year to year.
01:35 Okay, in terms of benefits, there are a lot of benefits. One of them is reducing pollution.
01:43 If there are a lot of benefits, why are there not many people using packaging or environmentally friendly drinking water?
01:48 Is the issue still in the price? Or what, David?
01:53 Yes, in terms of price, it is definitely more expensive than ordinary plastic.
02:01 Because in terms of economic scale, we have not yet reached an economic scale like plastic, where the price can be as cheap as plastic.
02:12 And also, from the public's awareness, we choose the alternatives, first, from the economic scale,
02:21 second, from the availability of products that are not mass-produced or not available anywhere,
02:28 and third, also from the public's awareness, because there are still not many people who know about environmental products,
02:36 not many people who are mainstream plastic, in our opinion. And also, in terms of the public,
02:44 or from the government's introduction, we can also see that the cheapness of plastic is actually quite short-term.
02:55 But the environmental impact produced by pollution and environmental damage is actually long-term,
03:04 so it can be more expensive when we have to improve our relationship or reduce our relationship from pollution to this.
03:11 So maybe that's what we have to look at, and we still have to be more careful,
03:16 because there are still many products, environmental products, that are still not used in a mass way.
03:25 Yes, okay, David. If we look at it, one of the interesting things about E-BOWER is the edible straw.
03:33 If I'm not mistaken, it can be eaten, right?
03:36 If we look at it, there are many concerns from consumers, if they use straws or products that are environmentally friendly,
03:43 usually, what is the language of children nowadays? It's easy to pass through the paper, and then it's eaten.
03:51 And if we buy stainless steel straws, there are complaints that it's difficult and complicated to wash.
03:58 So where does the inspiration come from, presenting an edible straw? And what does it taste like when you eat a straw?
04:04 Yes, so our first product is actually a glass that can be eaten.
04:09 Then after that, we have the product launching, the glass is made from seaweed, then we have the second product launching,
04:15 packaging that can be consumed too.
04:20 So for example, for wrapping instant noodles or coffee, it can be directly poured into the water, it can be eaten.
04:27 So that's where it started. So the concept is actually, it can be consumed or eaten, but it doesn't have to be eaten or consumed, depending on the content.
04:38 We just want to show that it's very safe, even we as humans can consume it.
04:43 So we see that the idea is that the product should be really unique and quite unique,
04:52 so that the public can see it as something exciting and fun, and not just an alternative to plastic, which was boring and not good.
05:04 So the taste is almost not there, so just plain.
05:10 Because we don't want to change the taste of the drink itself, but it doesn't have to be eaten either.
05:18 We just want to show that it's very safe, even we as humans can consume it.
05:22 That there are movements to produce plastic packaging for the environment,
05:27 environmental protection, that's one thing that needs to be appreciated.
05:31 But one thing that causes concern is related to the knife, spoon and fork made of wood.
05:41 So it will be used, but to produce these tools also need wood.
05:50 I want to know, how is the process of making the food tools made of wood?
06:01 In my opinion, it's true that plastic is not environmentally friendly,
06:06 first of all, the material itself, the petroleum, is taken environmentally friendly.
06:11 Then when it's produced into plastic, this plastic won't deteriorate in a period of hundreds of years to thousands of years.
06:18 So it's not environmentally friendly, there are two reasons.
06:20 First, because it's made of wood, and also because it's used.
06:25 When Mas talked about wood, alternative wood,
06:31 it's true that when it's thrown away, it can be destroyed,
06:36 but there is a concern that the tree will be cut down.
06:40 We also have to see that the wood used for production,
06:48 the wood or paper used for production is better, and must also have an FFC standard.
06:56 Because FFC, as far as I know, when they cut down one tree, they also have to plant two more trees.
07:07 So in the end it can remain continuous.
07:12 So the tree is cut down, but there are also trees that must be planted.
07:17 But this certification is really follow-up and transparent,
07:20 making sure that what is used is from the tree that practiced the practices earlier.
07:26 Yes, so there is a certification, we provide alternatives that use wood or paper,
07:35 we make sure they have an FFC certification.
07:38 Okay, we will continue the discussion in the next session,
07:43 and we will be back soon with CREATE UP.
07:47 We are still discussing with Mas David Christian, the founder and CEO of EVOWEAR.
07:52 So when will the use of plastic, not plastic,
07:56 yes, environmental plastic, and also the waste that can be environmentally friendly and can be recycled,
08:03 this is a very significant increase, and in terms of price to the economy,
08:06 will be as cheap as conventional plastic.
08:10 Is it still a long time or is it already in front of our eyes?
08:13 Hello, Mas David.
08:18 Okay, so we are under the signal, but one thing I want to try,
08:24 drink using a straw that can be eaten.
08:27 Yes, edible flowers, if I'm not mistaken.
08:30 Straw and glass, so we don't leave a trace, so we don't have to wash the glass too.
08:35 Hello, Mas David.
08:38 Okay, the signal was lost.
08:40 So when do you think the use of this environmental plastic,
08:45 this environmental plastic will increase significantly, and in terms of price to the economy,
08:48 will be as cheap as packaging and conventional plastic?
08:52 Yes, in my opinion, it will depend on the market too,
08:57 because automatically we from the industry must be able to adjust from the market too.
09:05 So the market will also be driven by the government's regulations.
09:10 After that, the awareness of the public about environmental issues too.
09:14 The faster there is a regulation, and the more people are aware,
09:20 and want to use alternative plastic that is more environmentally friendly,
09:23 the process will be faster.
09:26 And other industries that are similar to ours will also grow,
09:32 and also help to speed up the process of the government's regulation.
09:38 But from your assessment, Mas David,
09:40 you see so far the awareness of consumers in Indonesia,
09:44 how far is it for awareness about the use of sustainable materials,
09:49 and the growth of business from E-BOWARE itself, how far is it?
09:52 Yes, from 2016, what we see is that the growth is quite significant, quite a lot.
09:59 Especially in 2018-2019, there are more movements,
10:06 and also maybe the government's regulations,
10:09 which can ultimately increase the awareness of the public,
10:16 and also from the market, it also increases the success.
10:19 So, year by year, the E-BOWARE business has increased significantly from year to year.
10:28 Have you already sold it?
10:30 If you say already sold, it's definitely already sold.
10:34 But because besides providing alternative plastic, we also want to innovate.
10:41 So, we also turn the profit back to be able to innovate to alternative plastic.
10:51 How interesting is it to sell?
10:54 How interesting is it for other players to join, to take part in a movement that ultimately has preserved the environment?
11:01 Yes, maybe compared to other commodity industries,
11:06 this environment is still not that big.
11:09 But what we see is actually from a long-term perspective.
11:12 When we become one of the first players,
11:16 when the industry is booming, people will definitely remember us.
11:23 The online industry is also like that.
11:25 The early players can also benefit.
11:28 The pioneers usually dominate the market.
11:30 Okay, David, I want to ask for your opinion.
11:33 The government applies paid plastic, but this program is not effective.
11:36 It even becomes a retailer's incentive to make a profit from selling plastic.
11:40 Because the public still loves to use conventional plastic, even though they have to pay.
11:44 What is your opinion on this matter and what is the solution?
11:49 Actually, it is a good step.
11:55 But maybe the regulations can be improved and made better.
12:00 Not only from the consumer's point of view, which may be burdened,
12:05 but also from the producer's point of view and the service provider's point of view.
12:11 It must be able to be burdened and responsible.
12:15 And when there is a burden or payment,
12:22 the funds can be used as a resource and development again
12:30 to make products, solutions or be cross-subsidized
12:36 so that the alternative plastic solution can be more affordable for the public.
12:44 So, it's not only for the public, but also for other sectors.
12:47 Okay, David, lastly, maybe there is a long-term target for EVOWARE to innovate in the future.
12:54 Yes, for now, EVOWARE is developing alternative replacements for plastic,
13:02 plastic seeds that can be used in conventional plastic machines and made from seaweeds.
13:08 So, our target is hopefully in the next 1-2 years, we can finally produce our innovation in mass
13:18 and we hope that in the next 1-2 years, we can also be a platform in the industry.
13:25 Okay, keep up the good work on the efforts made by EVOWARE.
13:30 Hopefully, environmental friendly products are more and more consumed by the public
13:36 and can be more beneficial to the environment.
13:38 Good luck to you.
13:40 Thank you, David.
13:42 We will update the movement of the IHSG from the opening of session 1 until now.
