00:00He's recognized for two minutes. Thank you, Ranking Member.
00:02I rise to post H.R. 7109. I mean, think about it. It's another Republican attempt
00:09to attack immigrant communities in this country.
00:13So many of us are children, grandchildren of immigrants,
00:17and we have the hypocrisy to stand in this room here
00:22and continue to attack immigrant communities. Republicans are trying to
00:25amend the Constitution through unconstitutional means.
00:29The Census Bureau has constitutionally mandated responsibility
00:33to count the number of persons in the United States,
00:37to count every single person. Because, as the member prior
00:44from this side said, they are here. They're contributing.
00:48They are paying taxes. They make it possible
00:51for us to be able to retire and then be able to have
00:55the benefits that we've worked so hard because they're paying those taxes.
00:59And they serve our communities. Republicans are adding census questions
01:03to have a chilling effect to keep people afraid, to make them
01:07nervous, to discourage your participation in the
01:10census. And the ultimate effect that it's going to have on these communities
01:14like mine is undercounted and underrepresented.
01:17Our democracy grows weaker every single time these kind of actions
01:22are brought to this floor. We must ensure that the census remains
01:27as accurate as possible and free from the political
01:31interference that would be robbing whole communities
01:35of the resources and the representation they are entitled to.
01:39I encourage strongly a no vote and I yield back to the ranking member.
