The teenager who killed Emma Lovell has been sentenced to jail

A judge has categorised the home invasion murder of Queensland woman Emma Lovell as "particularly heinous".

00:00For the family of Emma Lovell, no sentence will ever be enough.

00:06Emma's not here. It's not going to bring her back.

00:08Instead of celebrating his birthday with his wife, her husband, Lee Lovell,

00:12watched in court as her teen killer was punished for murder.

00:16It would have been a very different day if Emma was here.

00:19The teenager received 14 years in jail for stabbing the mother of two,

00:23after the then 17-year-old broke into their North Lakes home on Boxing Day 2022.

00:29It's one of the longest sentences handed to a juvenile in Queensland in several years

00:34and could only be given because a judge found his crime particularly heinous.

00:39It is correct to describe the offence in this case as atrocious

00:44and one which would create a sense of outrage in the general community.

00:48I'm pleased I suppose he's gone from particularly heinous crime

00:50and we've got more than up to 10 years which is what I thought it was going to be.

00:54I'd like to think that maybe going forward this can help other people set a new precedent maybe.

00:59Under Queensland legislation, the maximum time a juvenile can be ordered to serve in custody

01:04is 70 per cent of their sentence.

01:07That's unless special circumstances can be determined.

01:10Justice Sullivan found those factors still did not outweigh the seriousness of his offending

01:16as well as his lengthy criminal history.

01:19The Lovells were ordinary citizens enjoying their family life in their home

01:24where they were entitled to feel safe.

01:26What occurred violated that entirely.

01:29This means the teen will have to spend nine years and nine months in jail

01:34and will be released in 2032.

01:37I suppose my mind ran away in thinking that you're going to get a life sentence

01:41but no I don't feel justice is served one bit really no.
