00:00 June 18, 2023, Hardeep Singh Nijjar was arrested and charged by Canadian police on Friday with
00:07 the murder of Sikh separatist leader Hardeep Singh Nijjar last year and said they were
00:11 probing whether the men had ties to the Indian government.
00:15 The Royal Canadian Mounted Police named the three men as 28-year-old Karanpreet Singh,
00:22 22-year-old Kamalpreet Singh and Karan Brar, who is also 22 years of age.
00:29 Following many months of investigative work by the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team
00:34 with close collaboration and assistance from the Federal Policing Programme in B.C., RCMP
00:39 National Headquarters, the Surrey RCMP Detachment and other partner agencies, three suspects
00:45 have been arrested and charged for their alleged involvement in the killing of Mr. Nijjar.
00:51 45-year-old Nijjar was shot dead in June outside a Sikh temple in Surrey, a Vancouver suburb
00:58 with a large Sikh population.
01:01 A few months later, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau cited evidence of Indian government

01:11 Nijjar was a Canadian citizen campaigning for the creation of Khalistan, an independent

01:21 "I definitely think it was a real threat.
01:22 I think that's what the plan was.
01:23 And I don't think they will deviate from that plan in the near future.
01:29 As long as there are Sikh voices out there demanding Khalistan or sovereignty or potentially
01:32 other minorities that could be under risk as well, that are Indian minorities, I think
01:37 it's a very real risk."
01:39 The presence of Sikh separatist groups in Canada has long frustrated New Delhi, which
01:44 had labelled Nijjar a terrorist.
