00:00My Outro For My 20th Birthday
00:30Hello and welcome to Latest TV News, my name is Sam Wharton, a reporter for Sussex World
00:48and I'm going to be speaking to fellow Brighton & Hove Albion writer Henry Bryant about Albion's
00:523-0 defeat at Bournemouth before we look ahead to the visit of Aston Villa.
00:57Here are the top stories from across the county.
00:59Multiple Sussex restaurants are facing an uncertain future after a major hotel chain
01:04announced it will be shutting more than 100 sites.
01:06Despite announcing a significant rise in returns to shareholders, the Premier Inn's owner
01:11Whitbread will cut 1,500 jobs across the UK and shut 126 restaurants.
01:18Whitbread, which runs 850 hotels in the UK, began its consultation process on Tuesday,
01:23promising to find alternative jobs for staff members affected.
01:27Unprofitable Beef Eater and Brewers' Fair restaurants are in danger of closing.
01:30There are four Beef Eater restaurants in Sussex, including in Horsham, Arundel, Burgess Hill
01:35and Hastings.
01:37Brewers' Fair has restaurants in Goffs Park, Crawley, Hastings and The Drove, Newhaven.
01:42Whitbread is not providing details on specific restaurant closures at this stage whilst staff
01:47are being consulted.
01:48A developer is looking to add more apartments to a Hailsham housing scheme by removing a
01:52convenience store put forward in a previous version of the plans.
01:55In an application submitted to Weald Industrial Council, developer Belway Homes is seeking
01:59planning permission to erect a seven-unit apartment building at the entrance to its
02:04220-home development in Mill Road.
02:06The application seeks to build the apartments in place of a previously proposed convenience
02:10store, which was first approved as part of the scheme's outlying planning permission
02:14in October 2020.
02:15It was also part of the Reserve Matters approval granted last year.
02:18The removal of the store has come in for criticism from Hailsham Town Council in a statement
02:22submitted in response to the application.
02:24A spokesperson for the authority said,
02:26The Town Council strongly objects to the removal of the convenience store.
02:30It was an integral part to creating a sustainable plan for the development and the viability
02:34of the site is integrally impacted by the presence of the convenience store.
02:38But Belway Homes argues the store would be undeliverable as its location is not viewed
02:42as desirable by retailers.
02:43Meanwhile, essential beach maintenance and repair works have begun on Eastbourne seafront.
02:48On Monday, contractors for Eastbourne Borough Council started on maintenance and repair
02:52work at the beach, focusing on Fisherman's Green, Langley Point, Holywell and the steps
02:57east of the bandstand.
02:58In a statement, a spokesperson for Eastbourne Borough Council said essential beach maintenance
03:02and repair works to access steps and groynes along Eastbourne seafront begin this week.
03:06The Council also confirmed that the works will take place around tide times and weather
03:10conditions, leading to a variety of times when the work will take place.
03:14Works will need to be arranged around tide times and weather conditions, so start times
03:17may vary.
03:18Be cautious while heavy machinery is in use in these areas and allow staff to carry out
03:22their work safely.
03:23Govia Thameslink Railway is urging customers planning to travel by train during the early
03:27May bank holiday that they must check their journeys ahead of time, as industrial action
03:32by the Aslef Union will impact services.
03:34There will be no trains across the majority of the Southern, Thameslink and Great Northern
03:38and Gatwick Express network on Tuesday, May 7th.
03:41In addition to May 7th, there is a nationwide ban on overtime in place by Aslef.
03:46This means that from Monday 6th until Saturday, May 11th, there will be an amended timetable
03:50in place for all GTR services.
03:52With engineering works taking place across the May bank holiday, followed by industrial
03:56action, GTR is advising customers to check their journeys for the entire period, starting
04:00from Saturday, May 4th.
04:02Finally, a hotel in Brighton has been named one of the best in the UK.
04:06Room of the View in Marine Parade has been named the fifth best hotel in the small and
04:10boutique category in TripAdvisor's Traveller's Choice Awards.
04:13The awards celebrate the highest level of excellence in travel and awarded to fewer
04:17than 1% of listings on the site.
04:20The hotel, which appeared in the 2014 episode of Channel 4's 4 in a Bed, was commended
04:25for being all about quality and comfort.
04:27With beach access, modern and clean rooms and beautiful decor, it's a great spot for
04:31a relaxing getaway, a spokesperson for TripAdvisor said.
04:34The hotel features boutique sea-view rooms with amenities like roll-top baths and monsoon
04:39showers.
04:40A rooftop balcony offering fantastic views of Brighton Palace Pier.
04:43A Room of the View has been given a five-star rating for more than 1,000 reviews on TripAdvisor.
04:48So we're here on Brighton Pier with Henry Bryant to speak about all things Brighton
04:51and Hove Albion.
04:52So Henry, you were there on Sunday to watch Brighton loss 3-0 to Bournemouth, another
04:56defeat which has been a pretty poor run of form for Brighton and doesn't look like ending
05:01any time soon.
05:02So how would you sum up that performance?
05:04It was just a lacklustre performance overall and I think Brighton fans came into this one
05:08thinking, yes, this is a chance to reset against opposition that we should have a
05:12good game against, even considering the form that we're in at the moment.
05:16And we just didn't prove our worth and we weren't unlucky.
05:22We deserved to lose that game and it was, as Roberto Di Zerbi has said, a tough period
05:26for us, not just in that game, but for the last few months of the season really, ever
05:31since we've got lots of injuries in terms of the key plays that we've had with the likes
05:36of Matoma even, it's just been really hard for Brighton to find any sort of attacking
05:41presence and attacking creativity that we've been so used to and Premier League fans and
05:45football fans all over the world have praised Brighton for.
05:49And when that first goal went in, through the corner, it was the debutant starter, O-Mahoney,
05:54that just wasn't able to get his head on the ball and clear it out from the first man that
05:58sort of floated in the air for a Bournemouth player to attack and score the goal.
06:02And from then, head's dropped and the likes of Eagle that was in defence was just getting
06:07outdone for pace and also just passion to get the ball from Kluivert that was really
06:13obvious to see and Kluivert was able to get a goal as well in that game.
06:18So in terms of the performance, I think we just allowed our opposition to play well because
06:22of the lack of intensity that Brighton are having at the moment because they haven't
06:27really got that much to play for at the moment.
06:28It's looking like Europe's out the window for back-to-back seasons and Brighton fans
06:32and even Roberto Di Zerbi said in a post-match press conference that he's not quite sure
06:36what the goal is now for the end of this season.
06:38He mentioned there was a lack of motivation, didn't he, in his press conference?
06:41I think fans were a little bit miffed by that, weren't they?
06:43Some fans were saying, why should we bother to turn up if there's a lack of motivation
06:47from the players?
06:48Why do you think that is?
06:49Can you fully blame injuries for the run of form?
06:52What else can you pin this on?
06:54I think potentially just getting used to playing and competing in Europe as well.
06:59I think that's a big difference for Brighton and Hove Albion and also not bringing in enough
07:03players to have a nice squad rotation if there were to be injuries in this sort of capacity
07:09because Brighton are definitely in that top category of Premier League clubs that have
07:14suffered the most injuries, for sure.
07:17Paul Barber mentioned in a recent fans committee that he said that they've employed a new scientist
07:23to actually help them and understand what is going on with these injuries and hopefully
07:27make sure that they are not going to be suffering with these extents or seriousness of injuries
07:32in the future.
07:34In terms of just how Brighton have played with that intensity and actually getting into
07:38the knockout rounds and losing against Roma in the end, I think that was the main thing
07:45is just that prolonged journey where we actually topped the group and had a brilliant time
07:50but actually at the cost of a lot of player injuries and also just a lot of fatigue coming
07:55into the end of the season which has just resulted in us having a bit of an underwhelming
07:58end to be honest with you.
08:00Coming up next is a home match against Aston Villa who are obviously going for the top
08:04four so it doesn't get any easier for Brighton.
08:07How do you see this one going?
08:08Well I've thought about it and I think that if Brighton are to not get embarrassed they
08:12need to really look at themselves in the mirror.
08:15Roberto Di Zerbi included because he's been quite melancholy about the situation saying
08:20I'm sorry Brighton fans and keeps on repeating these apologies but I think Brighton fans
08:24just want to see a little bit more fight and a bit more integrity because no matter what
08:30we're fighting for Brighton have always had that passion and soul and in terms of soul
08:35Roberto Di Zerbi said they didn't have that in that Bournemouth game so it's quite worrying
08:39at the moment and we're just hoping in terms of a Brighton perspective that they're able
08:43to show themselves in a good light for this game.
08:46I mean Aston Villa have been absolutely quality and they're almost doing what we would have
08:50maybe liked to have done last season and actually pushed for Champions League or even maybe
08:55what we would have wanted to do this season actually go from Europa League to Champions
08:59League and still have that amazing run that Brighton fans were all dreaming of and I still
09:04think the dream is alive in terms of maybe next season if we sign the right players but
09:08I think it'll be a really difficult one against Villa and I'm just hoping that Brighton are
09:13able to not get embarrassed. I think it'll be a loss but I think that they need to just
09:18sort of maintain themselves so they don't get embarrassed in this game and make it even
09:21worse for their fans.
09:22Yeah absolutely and obviously after that they've still got to play Chelsea, Newcastle and Manchester
09:26United obviously three tough games and Brighton couldn't get results from but how do you see
09:32Brighton getting another point this season because obviously at the moment they're bottom
09:36half of the table so there must be an incentive to at least finish top half.
09:39Yeah I know what you mean it's crazy to sort of see how we were competing for Europe this
09:44year and have sort of been catapulted back down into the bottom half like we're in the
09:50Chris Hewton sort of Graham Potter type season so it's weird really as a fan who's seen the
09:57progression of Brighton to be ending on a whimper which is what a lot of people have
10:01been telling me and if we're able to get a point I think we'll be able to get one point
10:05from a game whether that's Newcastle which I'd say is our best chance of getting that
10:12point we'll see or even Manchester United because of their performances as of recent
10:16sort of getting the result done but sort of in the later stages of matches if we were
10:20able to get a point it may be over that game or the Newcastle game I think that would be
10:24a big take home for Brighton fans coming into the summer transfer window and it's just sort
10:30of getting ourselves over the line because they're really struggling to get over that
10:34at the moment.
10:35Thank you for that Henry and stay tuned after the break for the Goldmouth Action Podcast.
11:05Welcome to another episode of the Goldmouth Action Podcast where we take a look at all
11:28the latest goings on at Brighton, Hove Albion and Crawley Town.
11:32I'm Matt Pulp and this week I'm joined by Brighton, Hove Albion writer Darren Howard,
11:36Crawley Town expert Mark Dunford and Sam Moran who covers both the Seagulls and the Reds.
11:41Brighton's win this run continued as they were beaten 3-0 at Goldmouth on Sunday.
11:44We'll pick over the bones of Albion's latest defeat and bring you some excellent news from
11:48Crawley Town.
11:50You can read all the stories we are talking about with videos and pictures online at sussexworld.co.uk
11:54for special support and you can check out other great videos on shotstv.com and freeview
11:59channel 276.
12:00You may also be watching on latest TV so thank you very much for tuning in.
12:05As Brighton are in relegation form, we have also relegated them to the second half of
12:08this podcast and with good reason too as Crawley Town's 2-0 win over Grimsby secured their
12:12spot in the League 2 play-offs and sparked euphoric scenes at the Borefield Stadium
12:16at full-time.
12:18Sum that performance up for us please Sam Morton.
12:21Oh it was fantastic Matt.
12:22It was obviously a do or die game for Crawley Town.
12:26They had to win and they had to rely on other results going their way elsewhere and it went
12:30perfectly for them really.
12:32They got the result they needed and they managed to get into the play-offs sparking jubilant
12:37celebrations, all the fans around to the pitch and it was a thoroughly professional performance
12:42in such extreme pressure really.
12:45You never would have could have thought I think we noticed in previous games that maybe
12:48the pressure was having an effect on Crawley especially as Sutton ended up really nervous
12:54and you don't really see any of that.
12:56They got the early goal that we were discussing so vital for Giannino Orsi and Lobos made
13:012-0 which is exactly what they needed and it was a really routine performance and yeah
13:07a lot more comfortable and routine than I expected really and the fans obviously just
13:13absolutely loved the manner of the victory and obviously the news came at the end of
13:18the game there at the play-offs and it was a historic moment, one that will go down in
13:21the world record books and in the Maverick's loyalty to our fans really.
13:25So yeah a really brilliant day for the club and yeah just fingers crossed they can continue
13:31the form and into the play-offs.
13:32Yes, absolutely.
13:33The Reds will now meet MK Donners over two legs of the semis.
13:38The first leg will take place on the 6th of May at the Broadfield Stadium with the return
13:41leg taking place three days later.
13:44How do you rate Crawley's chances against Milton Kingsmark?
13:46I think we've discussed off-podcast that it's quite a nice draw for them considering their
13:50geographic location, it's their teams that are left in the play-offs.
13:54Oh absolutely, yeah geographically it's perfect for Crawley because there's only a couple
13:59of hours trip in it there on the Thursday for the second leg.
14:02Although part of me thinks that this is probably who they would have wanted in the play-offs
14:09given what's happened this season because they beat MK Donners, I think they were the
14:12first side to inflict a defeat on MK Donners in August when they won 2-1, goal of the season
14:19contender from Danilo Orsi winning the game there and then they lost 2-0 in December,
14:25it was the end of December 29th I think it was, so it was a night game, right, yeah horrible
14:31fixture.
14:32But they absolutely dominated that game but they just could not score, I think they had
14:36like 18, 19 efforts on target or something or on shots on goal and they just could not
14:41score and I think MK Donners got an early goal and a late goal just to sort of condemn
14:47them to defeat.
14:48So I think Crawley feel they've had the better of MK Donners this season on the whole, whereas
14:55you look at the other two teams in the thing, Doncaster and Crewe and Crawley have lost
15:00both times to both of those teams.
15:03So I know it's a play-offs and that but psychologically it always helps if you're playing a side that
15:07you know you've got won over so far this year.
15:10So yeah it's a huge game, I think they can win, I think Crawley think they can win, I
15:17think Scotland definitely think they can win.
15:20And I went to the ground yesterday while the fans were queuing up to get their tickets,
15:24there were big long queues yesterday, people were waiting for a couple of hours to get
15:28their tickets for Monday's game and I chatted to a few fans who, you can see the video on
15:35Sussexworld.co.uk, but they all seem very confident, I don't think they think this Crawley
15:43team can fail now, it's just there seems to be this thing, right we're getting to Wembley
15:47and we're winning it.
15:48So it's the first time they'll ever get there, first time they've ever been in the play-offs
15:52and confidence is very high in the Crawley town camp, let's say that.
15:56So I think they stand every chance, but MK Dons, they won't be a rollover obviously,
16:03but it's that thing of momentum, Crawley just getting in the play-offs in the last game
16:07of the season, that gives them that little boost.
16:11MK Dons, they've been there the whole time, they always knew they were going to be there,
16:15always there a little bit of, I don't know, like Ramsgate, you saw Ramsgate, they've been
16:19almost won the title, they've lost the title and then they lose to Chichester City last
16:23night, finishing 20 points ahead of them.
16:25I know it's a completely different level, completely different thing, but you see it
16:29happen all the time.
16:30Doncaster I think will be the favourites for the play-offs because of that momentum, but
16:36Crawley will be there, they've had that boost of getting there and they're riding high at
16:40the moment.
16:41So yeah, I'm confident.
16:43What's the view from the MK Dons camp going into the semi-finals, Sam, how do they view
16:48this tie?
16:49Well, manager Mike Williams has said he is preparing his side for a difficult couple
16:53of games in a recent quote that came out from our press conference.
16:58So obviously, in the regular season, as Mark said, Crawley inflicted Dons to their first
17:03defeat of the season back in August, so they probably will harbour memories of that and
17:07know what to expect when playing against Crawley and they'll probably be looking to make a
17:12commencement for that when they return to the Broadfield Stadium.
17:15But as Mark said, they'll be looking to make a quick return to League One after being relegated
17:19last season.
17:21So they're obviously going to be favourites for the game just because of that.
17:24But I think in the play-offs, form completely goes out the window and in that sense, it's
17:29going to be who can deal with the emotion of it and the pressure that comes with it.
17:33And obviously, as we've seen from Crawley, they haven't performed the best when the crowd
17:37has been there, when they had the £2 tickets.
17:42So just fingers crossed they can perform better because obviously we are anticipating
17:46a sell-out crowd.
17:47The demand has been something we've not seen before for Crawley tickets before, so just
17:52hopefully they can deal with that kind of added pressure of playing in front of more
17:57fans.
17:58But as Williamson said, they're going to a tough semi-final against a team who play good
18:03football and they're really good when they went away from KDons as well.
18:07And he actually thought Crawley were the better team despite MKDons coming out on top on the
18:11day.
18:12And he actually said that, like MKDons, Crawley, when they get it right, are really hard to
18:17stop and it will just be who can deal with the pressure on the day and who performs the
18:21best over the two legs.
18:23So yeah, definitely a lot of respect between the team managers and the two teams, I think.
18:27I think, yeah, that's the thing.
18:30They're two really good at training, so it should be a good game, whatever happens.
18:34And it's just, like Sam said, it's the pressure and that, but it'll be interesting if Lindsay
18:39gets one over Williamson, because Williamson has been nominated for Manager of the Year,
18:42obviously, and Lindsay did not.
18:44Yes, it does smack of silly in the hindsight that he wasn't even nominated, as he considered
18:50the Miracle was at his worst, isn't it, Mark, as big as Belize?
18:54Oh, and it really does.
18:55It's crazy how he has not been nominated for Manager of the Year.
18:59I read a piece earlier on one of the betting sites just saying who's been the best manager
19:02in League Two this year, and it was all the top five managers, and Lindsay was top and
19:07just saying, just with what he's got to work with, where they were, he's just done an incredible
19:12job.
19:13He's said it time and time again, that it's been great.
19:15Absolutely, and I've seen that Gillingham have lost their manager as well, Mark.
19:19Is there any, is the rumor mill kicked into gear again?
19:23Well, betting odds have.
19:25Lindsay's second favourite with a couple of the betting sites at the moment, but it was
19:29funny, I saw a couple of Crawley fans, keep your hands off this man, and they're showing
19:34Lindsay celebrating with Crawley.
19:37In the Gillingham statement, it said that they were looking to make a quick appointment.
19:41Obviously, Lindsay's not going anywhere in the next couple of weeks, so it depends how
19:44quick.
19:45I think Gareth Haynesworth was a favourite with some of the bookies, so we'll see.
19:50But, yeah, I don't think it's going to be quite like it was in November with the rumors
19:54going around and all that, but if I was Gillingham, I'd want Scott Lindsay.
19:58Absolutely, and yeah, I was going to say, he's also been linked with the Stevenage
20:02job, or had been linked with the Stevenage job, hadn't he?
20:04He's very much a man in demand at the moment.
20:06Finally, the Reds held their end-of-season awards on Sunday.
20:10Mark, you were in attendance, dishing out awards.
20:13How was the night, and who won what?
20:15Yeah, it was a really good night.
20:16I mean, I can't imagine what it would have been like if they hadn't qualified for the
20:19playoffs the night before, but it was a really good atmosphere.
20:23There were fans there, there were players there, staff, all the players' girlfriends,
20:29wives, etc.
20:30So, yeah, it was a really nice atmosphere.
20:32I'm at Lingfield Race Park.
20:35Well, I handed out, obviously, the biggest award of the night, Crawley Observer Player
20:38of the Year.
20:39We gave it to Will Wright.
20:41He's been a bit of an unsung hero, I think, this year.
20:43Scored some cracking goals, but yeah, he's just been so consistent in his play.
20:47I think he's played 40, I think he might have played 44, 45 of the 46 league games.
20:54And yeah, it was nice to see a bit of reaction on Twitter with that, saying what a good choice
20:57that is, because Danilo Orsi won two awards.
21:01He won the Community Champion for doing his trademark celebration, which is on the horse,
21:08I'm going to do it, riding the horse.
21:10And he's raising money for charity while he does those celebrations, and he's done it
21:1521 times this year, which is great.
21:17Clydie Lollos won the CTSA Young Player of the Season award, and I think that's well
21:22deserved.
21:22He's been a revelation this year, Clydie Lollos.
21:24He was playing for Oxford City last year, mental.
21:28Goal of the season went to Lollos for his brilliant strike against Harrogate Town.
21:32Player of the season went to Jay Williams.
21:36I would have loved to have put up his full acceptance speech, but it was not for the
21:40young ears.
