00:00Today's an absolute tragic day for the city of Charlotte and for the profession of law enforcement.
00:07Today we lost some heroes that are out just simply trying to keep our community safe.
00:14I'm going to try to go through a series of events of how this all occurred and played out
00:19and then tell you a little bit more about the injuries and the things that we had to endure today as a profession and as a city.
00:28So about 1.30 p.m. this afternoon, the U.S. Marshals Fugitive Task Force went to the 5,000 block of Galway Avenue
00:40in an attempt to serve a warrant on an individual for possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.
00:47When they approached that individual, they were met with gunfire.
00:51Officers returned gunfire and struck the victim, who was later pronounced deceased in the front yard of the residence.
01:01As officers approached that individual, they then received additional gunfire from inside of the residence.
01:10So after a long standoff, we were able to clear this residence and confirm that there were two additional people inside.
01:19They were both brought to the police station as persons of interest,
01:23and we're trying to determine now what exactly occurred inside of the residence.
01:29Tragically, there were three members of the U.S. Marshals Task Force who were pronounced deceased,
01:40and there were four CMPD officers who were shot,
01:46one being in critical condition who is now in the hospital fighting for his life.
01:51A total of eight law enforcement officers were shot by the suspects in this house.
01:59I come to you again with heavy heart to announce that Officer Joshua Iyer recently passed away
02:07as he succumbed to the injuries that he sustained this afternoon in the shooting.
02:12Officer Iyer has been with CMPDs for six years.
02:17He was a graduate of the 178th Recruit Class.
02:21He's survived by his wife, Ashley, and his 3-year-old son, Andrew.
02:30We'll always be indebted to Officer Iyer for his bravery and his sacrifice for this profession.
02:40It was just last month I was in this very room
02:45congratulating Officer Iyer for becoming Officer of the Month in April.
02:51He certainly dedicated his life and gave his life to serve our citizens,
02:57and I ask that you will keep him and his family and all of the others that fell victim this afternoon.
03:06Keep everyone in your prayers.
