New baby zebra welcomed at National Zoo and Aquarium

A new foal was born overnight at Canberra's zoo surprising zookeepers the following morning.

00:03 I went up to feed our Barbary sheep at around 8 o'clock

00:05 and as I was putting the food out for the Barbary sheep,

00:07 I looked over to check our zebras.

00:10 I saw Keeva and I thought, "Oh, she looks a bit funny.

00:12 Her belly isn't quite as big and she has too many legs."

00:15 And I was like, "Oh my gosh, we have a baby."

00:17 And yeah, I was very excited.

00:19 We are just waiting to see if it's a boy or a girl

00:23 and then from there we'll kind of look at names

00:25 and yeah, get to that.

00:27 In the past, we have kind of tried to follow

00:30 with the first letter of mum's name,

00:31 but we have too many K names and too many J names

00:34 from our other mare.

00:35 So we might try and do something different this time.

00:37 You know, normally the foals try and stay really close to mum

00:40 and mum is really protective,

00:41 but this foal is more than happy to go

00:43 and annoy its big brothers and dad,

00:45 which is yeah, funny to watch.

00:46 So the new little foal is doing really well.

00:49 So obviously one of the first things we want to see

00:51 is that they're up and about and moving around.

00:53 They're really active.

00:54 We definitely want to see them drinking from mum

00:55 quite early on and so far we're seeing all of those things

00:59 and mum herself is being really healthy also.

01:01 So she's protecting her foal.

01:03 You know, she's still interacting with the rest of the group as well.

01:06 Do all the right things.

01:07 So we're really happy with how they're progressing at the moment.
