00:00:27 Welcome back to Ankara, Turkey for the continuation of Women's Semi-Finals Day.
00:00:33 It is the second of the two semi-finals.
00:00:37 Women's Semi-Final B where after the next hour and a half or so
00:00:41 we will have the conclusion of the semi-finals and we will know
00:00:44 the 18 athletes that will make it through to the final.
00:00:48 Two magpies is usually a sign of good luck.
00:00:51 Hopefully there will be some good luck for the athletes on the course today.
00:00:54 The weather has worked in their favor. 24 degrees with a bit of cloud cover
00:00:58 in some ways, that's perfect. But there is still a bit of blustering wind
00:01:01 as you can see those trees rattling in the background.
00:01:03 Let's take a look at the current format which starts with qualifications
00:01:06 where the athlete numbers are reduced to two groups of 18
00:01:09 with Semi-Final A and Semi-Final B taking place.
00:01:11 After the semi-finals we are left with the 18 best athletes
00:01:14 who contest in the final. The event taking place over a content
00:01:18 90 minute duration with five disciplines.
00:01:20 18 athletes up against each other and competing for the medals.
00:01:24 Well today is of course Semi-Finals Day.
00:01:26 So no riding, the riding rules points scoring system on your screens now.
00:01:30 We will go into greater detail as the competition progresses.
00:01:33 It's then over to the fencing bonus round for the one-on-one bout.
00:01:38 Seems the victory is worth two points.
00:01:41 That is the conclusion of the fencing action.
00:01:44 We then move over to the pool for the heats of 200m freestyle.
00:01:48 Here in Ankara it's a 25m pool.
00:01:52 We conclude with the ever dramatic laser on five laps of the 600m circuit
00:01:56 with four laser shooting rounds where the athletes have to shoot
00:02:00 the five targets. The first over the finish line, as always in pentathlon,
00:02:06 is the winner. This is the new format. It's fast, it's frantic
00:02:09 and a new challenge for the athletes to overcome.
00:02:12 It's Olympic here everybody. So strap yourselves in.
00:02:15 Five sports in 90 minutes. Welcome to modern pentathlon.
00:02:19 So let's take a look then at the Olympic rankings.
00:02:23 And you can see Anna Malashevska is currently top, a point ahead of Ilka Rzucsal
00:02:29 with Mariana Aseo in third place. Satero in fourth.
00:02:33 Gulyash is up in fifth place. But don't forget a lot of these athletes
00:02:37 have already got a quota outside of the Olympic rankings.
00:02:39 So it gets a little bit complicated as to who's qualified.
00:02:42 But the headline act is try and get yourself inside that top nine
00:02:46 to get yourself a place in the Olympic rankings.
00:02:50 Laura Astalskaiti in 10th place. Marie Orteza, 11th. Guzy in 12th.
00:02:56 Rebecca Castaldi is in 13th place. That would be a real surprise
00:03:02 if she was able to get herself into the Olympics.
00:03:04 Let's take a look back at the fencing bonus round.
00:03:07 And what I want to say is a surprise in front of Elodie Kluvel
00:03:10 who you just saw on your screen there. She is an Olympic silver medalist.
00:03:13 But it wasn't her day today. Her gun let her down.
00:03:17 And that has set one of the dramatic stories of this day.
00:03:20 This, though, is semi-final B. These are the pictures from the fencing
00:03:24 ranking round arena. And you'll see there,
00:03:27 Corenza Bryson. What a day she had yesterday with 27 victories.
00:03:34 Lange got 22. Orteza got 21. Abdul Maksoud got 20 alongside her.
00:03:40 Natalia Dominiak, Xiaoming Xiang with 19. Elena Prokopenko with 18.
00:03:45 Spurs' Valerina Pernakina and Lisly Khladkova on 17.
00:03:51 It's all about getting inside that top nine on semi-finals day.
00:03:55 Prokopenko is level on points with 9th place.
00:03:58 Khuryeva is in 11th place. Anderlin 12th. Cabrera in 13th.
00:04:04 And the rest of those athletes will be looking to get themselves up that standing.
00:04:08 So it's time now for fencing bonus round here in Ankara, Turkey.
00:04:13 Each victory is worth two points.
00:04:16 And we will begin the action here in Ankara.
00:04:26 And alongside me is my colleague Mariam Amur, Egyptian athlete and now seasoned commentator.
00:04:36 Here we go, Mariam, another fencing bonus round about to get underway.
00:04:39 First up is Anna Yurt versus Rita Endos.
00:04:42 Yeah, exciting stuff. Two very young athletes.
00:04:44 And we saw the most runs we've had in the semi-final.
00:04:49 It was three. I think it was Veronica Novotna.
00:04:52 So we'll be looking at that heading into this semi-final.
00:04:55 So Anna Yurt on the right going for the attack.
00:04:58 Rita Endos currently in the top ten of the Olympic rankings and gets the touch against Anna Yurt.
00:05:06 Two extra points added to her name.
00:05:10 So the important part of fencing bonus round is to try to get as many athletes as possible
00:05:38 to get as many extra points as you can.
00:05:41 One victory is minimum requirement really.
00:05:43 It disappoints you if you don't get one victory, aren't you?
00:05:45 Yeah, I think at least you'd aim to get one upon this bonus round piece
00:05:51 because even if you only get one, you kind of keep your position.
00:05:56 So Emma Whitaker tries to take the highland.
00:06:01 Rita Endos goes for a lunge and it's Emma Whitaker with the touch.
00:06:07 [no audio]
00:06:21 Ranked 15th from the ranking round.
00:06:24 Anna Yurt from Belgium.
00:06:27 [no audio]
00:06:35 195 she fenced yesterday.
00:06:39 [no audio]
00:06:48 So a nice Uds versus Emma Whitaker here.
00:06:53 And Whitaker already won, but she took her name.
00:06:58 [no audio]
00:07:05 Back underway with 15 seconds to go.
00:07:08 And there is the touch from Uds.
00:07:11 So Uds is making her way back from injury.
00:07:15 [no audio]
00:07:23 [no audio]
00:07:48 So Marianne Asseo is next up on to the offensive bonus round piece.
00:07:54 Asseo had a fantastic 2023, didn't she, Marianne?
00:07:57 She picked up some really good results, one of which came here in Ankra
00:08:01 when she picked up a bronze medal.
00:08:05 Yeah, it was her first individual medal at a World Cup series.
00:08:09 Gold medalist in Pan American Games in 2019.
00:08:14 And Uds takes that high line and it's her second win.
00:08:19 [no audio]
00:08:35 So Anna Yurt stays up on the piece.
00:08:39 And we welcome the next athlete, Sofia Cabrera.
00:08:44 [no audio]
00:09:07 And there is Uds now with two victories to her name.
00:09:10 Sofia Cabrera is next up on the piece.
00:09:15 Sofia Cabrera's fourth Pan American Games to relay.
00:09:20 15 seconds left on the clock now.
00:09:23 [no audio]
00:09:25 And there is a third victory for an ace who is now up to six
00:09:31 and moves up to 201, just nine points away from qualification.
00:09:35 Now these are good points for the Belgian.
00:09:39 [no audio]
00:09:53 So those six extra points are basically equivalent to one point
00:10:00 in the fencing ranking round.
00:10:02 [no audio]
00:10:14 Amira Andil from Egypt up next.
00:10:19 Didn't have the best of ranking rounds either.
00:10:22 Struggled a bit in the fence yesterday.
00:10:25 She can try to redeem herself up on this piece right now.
00:10:30 So Uds looking to make it eight points with four victories.
00:10:33 Andil with a touch of brilliant stuff from Andil,
00:10:37 who last year in particular had some very good fencing scores.
00:10:41 She's not quite got to those levels this year,
00:10:43 but three victories for an ace who is a good return.
00:10:46 [no audio]
00:10:50 Amira struggles a bit with the laser run,
00:10:52 so it's good that she managed to pick up some points here.
00:10:57 She is currently outside the top nine.
00:11:02 But a good run on this bonus round can put her up
00:11:06 in those top nine spots heading into the swim.
00:11:10 [no audio]
00:11:12 Kvrjeva up next, 205 points from the ranking round.
00:11:18 [no audio]
00:11:24 Andil, of course, with that one victory so far, two in name.
00:11:30 Kvrjeva was seventh in the Under-24 European Championships in 2021.
00:11:37 Andil Gokhbashian makes it two victories.
00:11:40 [no audio]
00:11:44 Amira Andil, second victory.
00:11:47 [no audio]
00:11:51 [indistinct announcement]
00:11:56 Ranked number ten at the end of the top ten.
00:12:01 [indistinct announcement]
00:12:05 Welcome to the beach, Anastasia Prokopenko.
00:12:09 Prokopenko is next.
00:12:13 Prokopenko on the left has priority.
00:12:19 Bronze medalist at the Olympics.
00:12:23 [no audio]
00:12:27 15 World Cup final in 2022 as well.
00:12:31 Multiple team relay medalist as well as eighth place in Ankara last.
00:12:37 It's already 2002.
00:12:40 Andil makes it three victories in a row here,
00:12:43 equaling Anastasia's record.
00:12:45 We've only had two winners so far in the fencing round.
00:12:49 Some pretty significant points being made up here by Amira Andil.
00:12:55 She could potentially move up to top ten if she continues on this run.
00:13:01 I see the Egyptian coach cheering her on in the background.
00:13:05 Welcome to the beach, Lucy Lvachkova.
00:13:09 So Lucy Lvachkova of the Czech Republic is next up.
00:13:13 She's had a pretty decent fence, 210 points for yesterday.
00:13:19 She is one of the younger athletes in this field.
00:13:24 She was fourth at Budapest Indoors last year,
00:13:27 fourth at the Junior World Championships in 2022.
00:13:30 And it is Amira Andil who gets her fourth touch here on the bonus round piece.
00:13:35 Good stuff from--
00:13:36 She's flying, isn't she?
00:13:37 And getting herself ever closer to that top nine handle as an accomplished fencer.
00:13:42 And is making up for lost points from the ranking round.
00:13:51 Nice shot there of the Egyptian coaches giving Amira Andil a thumbs up.
00:13:56 Well deserved by her as we move on to our top eight athletes.
00:14:04 And at number eight is Valeria Permikina of the Ukraine.
00:14:18 And Andil makes it double fingers.
00:14:21 It's ten extra points and that has moved Andil joint ninth place.
00:14:29 These are big points.
00:14:31 And Andil not the fastest laser runner needs these points.
00:14:34 Yeah, absolutely.
00:14:35 I mean, heading into that swim you want to secure as much bonus points as you can.
00:14:40 I mean, if you get one touch, it doesn't really matter if it's two seconds.
00:14:43 But ten seconds is a whole other world.
00:14:46 I mean, you can get in or out of a final with basically four seconds.
00:14:51 So ten seconds is--
00:14:52 Does Andil have a chance from there, do you think?
00:14:54 I think she's really worked on her running--
00:14:56 Oh, she has?
00:14:57 Yeah, on her off season.
00:14:59 So could potentially be in with a chance to make it into her.
00:15:03 Has to get past.
00:15:04 I know, yeah.
00:15:06 Helena Potapenko, Kazakhstan.
00:15:14 Into those-- oh, my goodness me.
00:15:18 Andil is flying six victories.
00:15:20 We're seeing something special here now.
00:15:22 And it's clear in ninth place.
00:15:25 Amazing stuff from Anita.
00:15:27 Andil should be happy with that for sure.
00:15:30 Probably would have wished she got them yesterday in the fencing ranking round.
00:15:33 That would have been an entirely different story.
00:15:34 Different days, though, isn't it?
00:15:35 You can't-- she could have not got any points.
00:15:38 You know, it's 12 points she's added to her score.
00:15:41 The point of fencing bonus run, I suppose, is a separate entity to the ranking round.
00:15:46 [INAUDIBLE]
00:15:59 Xiangling Xiang.
00:16:01 I have a feeling this is where Andil's run comes to an end.
00:16:04 Xiangling Xiang has been fencing well in this competition.
00:16:07 220 pentathlon points.
00:16:10 Yeah, Mirandil's on a roll, though.
00:16:12 Seems to be primed and ready for this.
00:16:14 Goes for a flush, doesn't get it.
00:16:16 13 seconds on the clock.
00:16:20 All good runs have to come to an end.
00:16:22 Will Andil make it seven victories, which would be 14 extra points.
00:16:27 [INAUDIBLE]
00:16:30 Defeats the Egyptian.
00:16:31 No, she can't.
00:16:32 It's seven, and Andil's looking unstoppable now.
00:16:35 This is crazy.
00:16:38 Well, the world record is 13 set by Rebecca Langer in 2021.
00:16:47 Andil has seven.
00:16:52 So there are only five bouts remaining, so she won't break the world record.
00:16:57 She can continue to get good points and actually could set the highest ever points haul,
00:17:04 because it used to be worth one point in the fencing bonus round when Rebecca Langer set her record.
00:17:13 I mean, she's already at 14 points, so that beats the record in terms of points.
00:17:18 And she gets her eighth touch.
00:17:20 This is phenomenal.
00:17:21 Yeah, this is crazy.
00:17:22 16 points.
00:17:25 Yeah, moves her up into seventh place.
00:17:28 And Amira started down in 12th place, so that's a big jump.
00:17:43 It's going to be an all-Egyptian affair, Samah Abdel-Mosoud against Amira Andil.
00:17:52 Will she be able to stop her run at eight wins?
00:17:55 We'll find out. Amira Andil goes for a lunge there and doesn't get it.
00:17:59 Samah Abdel-Mosoud is ready on her feet.
00:18:01 Has a good counterattack.
00:18:03 And Samah Abdel-Mosoud stops the run of Amira Andil.
00:18:08 Just check the plate there, but it looks like it was Samah Abdel-Mosoud.
00:18:14 So someone had to end it. It was her teammate in the end.
00:18:19 Amira Andil with 16 extra points in that run.
00:18:25 If she makes it into the final, that'll be why.
00:18:27 But anyway, it's a big part of it.
00:18:30 Absolutely.
00:18:32 Our next athlete, representing France, ranked third for the rounding round,
00:18:38 Roger Thibaud.
00:18:41 Rio Teza from France.
00:18:43 [no audio]
00:19:00 So Maria Teza already secured her spot at the Olympic Games.
00:19:10 Samah Abdel-Mosoud looking for that attack.
00:19:15 Maria Teza is incredibly skilled with that blade.
00:19:19 Ten seconds on the clock.
00:19:21 Samah Abdel-Mosoud has to make a move.
00:19:23 It's almost five seconds. Goes down low.
00:19:25 Goes for a foot touch. Doesn't get it.
00:19:27 Maria Teza with a flush forward.
00:19:30 Beautiful work from Teza.
00:19:32 And we say goodbye to Samah Abdel-Mosoud.
00:19:35 [no audio]
00:19:39 So we're in our top two athletes now.
00:19:41 Only two remain.
00:19:44 Rebecca Langer of Germany.
00:19:49 A good run yesterday of 235 fencing ranking round points.
00:19:56 [no audio]
00:20:02 Germany with the time priority.
00:20:06 Two very experienced athletes up against each other.
00:20:12 And battling it out for a spot in that final.
00:20:16 Rebecca Langer, of course, with the fencing bonus round world record.
00:20:21 She's had a very good fencing ranking round.
00:20:23 Put her in second place.
00:20:24 Those ranking round points carry her through to the final.
00:20:26 And Langer gets that touch.
00:20:29 I think she has good memories for the German athlete.
00:20:35 She picked up a medal here in 2023.
00:20:44 [no audio]
00:20:49 So it's a battle of first versus second.
00:20:52 Corenza Bryson with her 27 victories in the fencing ranking round.
00:20:59 Is absolutely on fire here in Ankara.
00:21:07 She got 16 of her first 16 bouts as victory.
00:21:12 I think she then lost four in a row.
00:21:13 It happens.
00:21:14 She managed to get a total of 27 victories.
00:21:18 Corenza Bryson is looking in very good form here.
00:21:22 Exciting to see how she fences here.
00:21:23 Up against Langer.
00:21:24 This will be worth four points for Bryson.
00:21:25 Being top of the party, you get four points if you win your bout.
00:21:29 This is a very attacking display from Langer.
00:21:32 Corenza's being pushed down the piece.
00:21:33 She turns defence into attack.
00:21:35 And picks up the extra victory.
00:21:37 It is four more points for Bryson.
00:21:39 As if she didn't need any more points.
00:21:42 And she extends her lead.
00:21:44 Well, actually, it's only by two points.
00:21:46 Because Langer picked up a victory.
00:21:48 But still, Bryson is going to cruise through to the final.
00:21:52 I think Bryson is the first one that we see.
00:21:56 Obviously, these are all talented athletes.
00:21:59 But I think she is going to give Michelle Goulias around for her money in the Olympics.
00:22:04 At least you think it could be between those two?
00:22:07 I think so.
00:22:08 Giving her current form, both of their forms, in fact, I think it's a good chance.
00:22:15 Yeah, I can see that.
00:22:17 I think they are two of the best athletes out there.
00:22:19 But there are many athletes that would disagree with you.
00:22:21 Some of which are on that screen right in front of you there.
00:22:24 These are the top nine athletes from semi-final B at this point of the competition.
00:22:29 Keep your eyes peeled on 215 points.
00:22:33 Valeria Parikhina of Ukraine is currently in ninth place.
00:22:37 You've got to get inside the top nine.
00:22:38 So that's the position that they are all chasing.
00:22:42 Let's have a look then at the second screen.
00:22:46 You can see Klačová in that position there in tenth place.
00:22:55 Blokopenko, Hurieva, Woods, Carrera, Arceo, Whittaker, Edos and Jurt are your top 18.
00:23:10 So that concludes the fencing bonus round.
00:23:13 We'll be back shortly with some interviews building up to the swimming.
00:23:17 Let's just check quickly back at the highlights of the fencing.
00:23:20 [Music]
00:23:25 [Music]
00:23:30 [Music]
00:23:35 [Music]
00:23:40 [Music]
00:23:45 [Music]
00:23:50 [Music]
00:23:55 [Music]
00:24:00 [Music]
00:24:05 So there we have it.
00:24:07 The bonus round is done and dusted as we move on to the swimming discipline here in Ankara, Turkey.
00:24:15 Let's take a look back and see how things move to the pool.
00:24:19 It's a short 30-second walk, I'd say.
00:24:23 The athletes swim 200 meters, a total of 2 minutes 30 gets you 250 points.
00:24:30 But of course the athletes are much faster than that.
00:24:33 It is of course a 25-meter pool here in Ankara, so we're expecting some quick times.
00:24:40 We have gotten word that the times are actually not that fast because of the drag in the pool.
00:24:46 It is an artificial temporary pool, so a bit of slower times.
00:24:55 But up on your screen there is Lucy Lováčkova of the Czech Republic, one of the younger athletes in the field.
00:25:01 18 years of age, very accomplished for her age and already secured her spot from the European Games at the Olympic Games.
00:25:08 So we're expecting some big things from her.
00:25:11 She is currently in the bottom half of the semifinal B.
00:25:16 I'm sorry, actually, she is currently in ninth place.
00:25:20 So that magic number nine belongs to Lucy Lováčkova.
00:25:24 And given her career in terms of running and laser shooting, I'd say she's definitely in for a chance to get into those finals.
00:25:33 So eight minutes on the clock.
00:25:35 We have of course three heats of the semifinal B.
00:25:40 They are determined, of course, in the order of the bonus round and ranking round put together.
00:25:54 These athletes make their way to the pool.
00:25:58 Warming up.
00:26:01 Of course, they don't get a chance to warm up in the pool since it's such a short transition time.
00:26:06 So the athletes kind of utilize what they have around them, use bands, use medicine balls, stretching,
00:26:13 anything that can activate their muscles before they jump into that pool.
00:26:19 In order to get themselves primed and ready, Maria Tejsa up on your screen also has qualified to the Olympic Games.
00:26:28 Definitely a threat in the semifinal B.
00:26:32 Some big names, actually. Can't really tell for sure who's going to make it into those top nine.
00:26:38 But again, we've seen some surprises like earlier on with semifinal A.
00:26:42 So the likes of Elodie Clouvel started out in first place and didn't end up making it to the final.
00:26:50 But it was, of course, a technical error. Her pistol was broken.
00:26:55 And so we wish her the best of luck and a quick recovery and jumping back into the field.
00:27:03 I think she mentioned earlier that she was going to get a new pistol heading into the Budapest World Cup.
00:27:10 So all eyes on that.
00:27:14 And we're jumping to the field with James for an interview.
00:27:18 [no audio]
00:27:47 The actions, everything, it was really good.
00:27:50 And if you were Corenza Bryson in this position right now, would you take things a bit easier in the pool?
00:27:54 Because she's got time to play with, hasn't she?
00:27:56 Well, I guess it depends on your strategy in the day.
00:27:59 But I think she has enough points to take it a little bit easier in the swim.
00:28:04 And definitely she needs a good combine. But she should be fine. She did amazing in the fence.
00:28:08 We've heard athletes describe this swimming pool as a slow swimming pool.
00:28:12 Explain to us what exactly that means.
00:28:14 Well, I think since they built it for the competition, it's not that fast.
00:28:19 And also the starting blocks are not that good, I think, in my opinion.
00:28:24 But, yeah, it's not such a fast pool. I think you need to push harder in order to reach your time.
00:28:29 But, yeah, everyone's swimming a bit slower. So I guess the pool is the same for everyone.
00:28:33 Exactly. And different pools, obviously, are going to produce different times.
00:28:36 It's just the ever-changing nature of being a fence athlete.
00:28:39 What would you say is the comparison between, say, a fast pool and a slow pool?
00:28:43 How much time, potentially, could an athlete lose?
00:28:46 I think around three to four seconds.
00:28:48 I think that would be around what people are assuming, four seconds slower or three seconds slower than the normal times.
00:28:54 And with this current format of pentathlon, it's all about getting inside that top nine.
00:28:59 How much pressure do you feel when you're close to that ninth place, trying to qualify for the final?
00:29:05 How much pressure does that add to your shoulders?
00:29:07 Oh, I think it's a lot of pressure. I don't think it really matters where you're at.
00:29:11 Because everything can happen in pentathlon. You don't really know until you cross the finish line.
00:29:15 And you can be first, you can be second, you can be 11th or 12th, and the pressure is there.
00:29:20 So I think you have to try to keep focused during the whole competition
00:29:24 and try to manage yourself the best you can to reach the result.
00:29:28 Different athletes, obviously, handle pressure in different ways.
00:29:31 Different athletes will, of course, compete in the competition in different ways.
00:29:36 In terms of saving energy for swimming, you hear different opinions here.
00:29:40 But times are generally slower than they are or they were in the previous format.
00:29:46 It's important to save a bit of energy for the laser run,
00:29:49 but equally to try and give as much time in the pool as possible.
00:29:52 Yeah, well, I guess with the new format, it's important to save your legs a little bit
00:29:56 because you have 10 minutes until you have to run really hard.
00:29:59 So potentially, the times are going to be a little bit slower.
00:30:02 But I guess it depends on which position you're at.
00:30:04 If you're trying to look for that top nine, then you're going to have to swim really hard
00:30:08 to get those extra points for the combined.
00:30:11 So I guess it really depends on where you're at.
00:30:14 Final question, who's going to win gold here in the female side of the competition?
00:30:18 I'm putting you in the spotlight here.
00:30:20 Well, I don't know. Like I said, anything can happen.
00:30:23 But I can have a good guess. I would say I would love to see Karenza get the gold.
00:30:28 Yeah, she did a really good job.
00:30:29 All right, thank you, Sofia. We'll see you in Budapest at the next World Cup.
00:30:32 Thank you.
00:30:37 That was Sofia Hernandez, the Guatemalan athlete.
00:30:41 And some good insight from her on how the athletes handle pressure throughout the competition,
00:30:47 whether or not they save their energy for the laser run.
00:30:51 So good words from her.
00:30:53 As we come closer to the start of the swimming, it's almost three minutes away.
00:30:59 The judges and officials are being announced.
00:31:03 And as we speak, see the first heat of three.
00:31:09 First heat, Anais Utz, Sofia Cabrera, Mariana Arceo, Emma Whittaker, Rita Erdos and Ana Ureth.
00:31:20 These are the bottom six athletes of the pile.
00:31:24 As of now, you can see that beautiful underwater shot as we take a look at the start list.
00:31:31 Swimming lane number one, Anais Utz, Sofia Cabrera in second, Mariana Arceo in third,
00:31:36 Emma Whittaker in fourth, Rita Erdos in fifth and Ana Ureth in the sixth lane.
00:32:00 So here we go, folks. It is the start of the swimming discipline.
00:32:06 Have a thought then of Guatemalan athlete Sofia Hernandez.
00:32:12 Guatemalan colleague Sofia Cabrera is next out.
00:32:20 On to the swimming arena. Mariana Arceo, another big wave to the crowd.
00:32:28 A bronze medalist in Ankara here last season.
00:32:35 Emma Whittaker, bronze medalist in the first event of the new formats back in 2022 in Cairo.
00:32:45 She's one of many talented British athletes trying to make their way into the Olympic pool.
00:32:55 Rita Erdos was fourth in the 2021 Junior World Championships.
00:33:01 Ana Ureth, fifth in the under-24 European Championships.
00:33:08 So heat number one about to get us underway here.
00:33:15 So heat number one about to get us underway here in Ankara, Turkey.
00:33:40 Off we go.
00:33:53 Off we go, athletes in pool heat underway race beginning.
00:33:59 The road to Paris continues.
00:34:05 First 25-meter dash flashes by, 14 seconds.
00:34:18 Mariana Arceo currently leading the wave. We'll see that split times as she turns.
00:34:25 31 seconds and one second behind her is Emma Whittaker.
00:34:29 And Sofia Cabrera also at that one second.
00:34:33 A bit of a slow start actually by Emma Whittaker. We'd expect to see her finish ahead of Mariana Arceo.
00:34:38 She's to the left of our race leader.
00:34:41 To the right actually, depending which way you look at things.
00:34:54 Arceo about to hit the halfway mark.
00:34:58 100 meters done, a 105 Arceo is flying.
00:35:01 Emma Whittaker, don't you think is having a good race there?
00:35:04 Emma Whittaker, but she could maybe make up a bit of time.
00:35:06 Yeah, she could make up some time now.
00:35:09 Mariana Arceo is looking strong though.
00:35:12 So it's difficult to say.
00:35:14 But again, we still have 75 meters to go.
00:35:21 So around 40 to 45 seconds of this race left to go.
00:35:26 Can Arceo keep this pace going?
00:35:29 She's a quick runner as well, so she still has a good chance to qualify for the final.
00:35:33 This is a really good swim from the Mexican athlete.
00:35:35 Whittaker is now nearly two seconds behind.
00:35:38 I think she's going to close that gap.
00:35:42 Arceo is giving it everything.
00:35:44 She looks to become the second female Mexican athlete to qualify for the Olympic Games.
00:35:52 Only two athletes per nation can qualify.
00:35:57 Here we go then. The battle is between Whittaker and Arceo.
00:36:00 Whittaker has closed that gap down. It's no longer as big as it was.
00:36:03 Whittaker is about to take this race lead.
00:36:05 It's been a really good, solid final 25 meters from Whittaker.
00:36:09 And it's only 0.19 in the end, the gap between the two of them, 2.17.
00:36:14 The time, a really good swim from Arceo and a good comeback from Whittaker.
00:36:18 Ns Oudts is further back, nearly seven seconds off the lead.
00:36:23 Strong finish from Whittaker.
00:36:27 Arceo did give that a lot of effort, didn't she?
00:36:31 I think she's the only athlete to swim close to her time.
00:36:35 She has a seat time of 2.16 and considering that this is a slow pool,
00:36:39 she could have even improved on that if it was a different pool.
00:36:43 But good stuff from both athletes.
00:36:52 Just in the replays and of Swimming Heat 1. One down, two to go.
00:36:57 You can see that strong finish from Whittaker.
00:36:59 They will actually get the same points, won't they?
00:37:01 Yeah, joint 2.17. It doesn't really matter whether or not you're finishing first.
00:37:10 But that is the standings.
00:37:11 Three points then between Whittaker and Arceo.
00:37:24 Now you can see the standings, then total points after swimming points have been added.
00:37:33 And these are the athletes for Swimming Heat 2.
00:37:44 Six athletes, Andal Potapenko, Pana Kina, Klajkova, Prokopenko and Hrulejeva.
00:38:02 Andal, who we saw picking up eight points.
00:38:07 Eight points, right? Eight victories.
00:38:09 Eight victories, so 16 points.
00:38:12 That's a lot.
00:38:13 Yeah, that's quite a bit.
00:38:17 Jumped up into seventh after shutting down in twelfth.
00:38:39 Valeria Permikina of the Ukraine out next.
00:38:42 Followed by the woman who currently occupies number nine, Lucy Lvochkova.
00:38:55 Anastasia Prokopenko swimming in lane number five.
00:39:00 From the individual and neutral athletes.
00:39:04 And Valeria Hrulejeva.
00:39:09 As the final athletes in the second heat.
00:39:12 These are midfield athletes.
00:39:14 The ones looking to get into those top nine.
00:39:43 Six athletes, second heat of the semifinal.
00:39:47 We're almost halfway through the competition.
00:39:53 Beautiful shot of the pool there.
00:39:55 Yeah, lovely shot.
00:39:57 Just captures that moment of calm and tranquility before boom.
00:40:01 Six athletes hit the water.
00:40:03 Race back underway.
00:40:05 Heat two of three.
00:40:08 The road to Paris continues.
00:40:11 Heading towards the 25-meter dash.
00:40:20 20 seconds in this race.
00:40:30 And we get our first split times and the leads.
00:40:37 So Amira Andil is flying in the swim.
00:40:42 To add to that, her eight victories earlier today.
00:40:48 This is looking to be a good semifinal for her.
00:40:53 Not too far behind Elena Potapenko of Kazakhstan.
00:40:56 It's going to be up to the split times to decide who wins this so far.
00:41:03 And it is the athlete from Kazakhstan, Elena Potapenko.
00:41:07 Only .5 ahead of Amira Andil.
00:41:10 So this is going to be tight.
00:41:11 Yeah, good start to this swimming heat.
00:41:13 Halfway stage and it's just .5 in the pool.
00:41:19 The difference between first and second.
00:41:24 So approaching the business end of this race.
00:41:36 And here we go then, the final 50 meters.
00:41:39 Athletes turn.
00:41:40 Potapenko leads.
00:41:42 She's opened up a gap of 1.63 over Andil.
00:41:45 Horeyeva is three seconds further back.
00:41:50 Final 25.
00:41:55 And there we go, final tumble turn.
00:41:58 And we have 25 meters to go.
00:42:02 It's looking fast from Potapenko.
00:42:07 And it's a strong finish, this from Potapenko.
00:42:10 The best time over the past 12 months is 2.15.
00:42:14 Oh my goodness me.
00:42:15 That is officially best time in the past 12 months.
00:42:20 A 2.15.50, two tenths quicker than her best time in the past 12 months.
00:42:27 That's a good swim that from Elena Potapenko.
00:42:30 Yeah, I think if this was a normal pool, she would have improved on that 2.15.
00:42:36 So good performance from her.
00:42:38 Definitely shows that she worked on her swim.
00:42:42 Good swim that from Potapenko then, made an exciting finish to that race.
00:43:02 Those then are the highlights, the second swimming heat.
00:43:06 One more to go.
00:43:11 We're nearly near the end of this swimming discipline.
00:43:25 So those are the standings.
00:43:29 The first two swimming heats.
00:43:32 Potapenko goes top on 4.94.
00:43:38 Four points ahead of Andal who took 16 points from the fencing bonus round.
00:43:44 We still have six athletes to go.
00:43:46 Xiaomeng Xiang, Dominjak Abdul-Maksoud, Tazer Lange and Bryson will take to the pool.
00:44:04 Yeah, Karenza Bryson, you might lose a bit of time in the pool.
00:44:09 Not the quickest of swimmers.
00:44:10 There you have heat number three.
00:44:13 Bryson, Lange, Tazer, Abdul-Maksoud, Dominjak and Xiang.
00:44:27 So next out, well I say next out, first out is Karenza Bryson who's been absolutely superb this competition.
00:44:37 27 victories in the fencing ranking round and four extra points for the fencing bonus round.
00:44:44 Great, great fencing from the gold medalist from Sofia last year.
00:44:49 Rebecca Lange, silver medalist in Ankara last year.
00:44:54 She's in second place in semi-final B. Maria Tazer, gold medalist in Sofia in 2019.
00:45:01 A lot of medalists in this final swimming heat.
00:45:06 Out next, Salma Abdul-Maksoud.
00:45:14 Bronze medalist in Cairo 2023.
00:45:18 Bronze medalist in Budapest, gold medalist in Budapest indoors in 2022.
00:45:26 Next it is Natalia Dominjak inside this lead group of athletes.
00:45:40 And then finally it is Xiangling Xiang of Korea.
00:45:47 Silver medalist in Sofia last year, Xiangling Xiang.
00:45:56 Those are your six athletes for the final swimming heat.
00:46:14 So here we go then, the final heat of the semi-final B.
00:46:18 We're that much closer to knowing who our top 18 athletes are and where we're going to make it to the finals are.
00:46:27 Great angle there from the camera and athletes launch themselves into the pool.
00:46:35 Now it will be interesting to see some of these swimming times because we've got the very quick Xiangling Xiang who is looking probably at time just over 2.11, possibly 2.12, 2.13.
00:46:51 It's the slowest swim for her.
00:46:53 Crenza Bryson who has such a powerful lead may opt not to put too much energy into this swim.
00:47:03 Xiangling Xiang has made a quick start.
00:47:18 Xiangling Xiang is looking strong and fast in this heat.
00:47:32 At the halfway stage here and Xiangling Xiang is comfortably ahead by a massive margin.
00:47:39 Samadhi Matsud keeping pace.
00:47:43 Oteyza is not too far off as well. Oteyza is a quick swimmer.
00:47:46 In fact, it could be a tight battle at the end.
00:47:48 Has Xiangling Xiang put too much energy into that opening 100 meters?
00:47:54 We'll find out. Can she hold on to the top place?
00:48:02 Look at that. These athletes are catching up to Xiangling Xiang, Samadhi Matsud and Natalia Dvinjak.
00:48:11 Or Oteyza, I'm sorry.
00:48:23 Into the business end of this final swimming heat.
00:48:26 Into the business end of swimming heat three.
00:48:29 And it is a battle now between our top three.
00:48:32 As we head to the finish line.
00:48:36 Maria Oteyza, Xiangling Xiang and Samadhi Matsud.
00:48:41 Samadhi Matsud with the lead now.
00:48:44 Final stages and it is Samadhi Matsud who wins this swimming heat.
00:48:48 I think Xiangling Xiang went a little bit fast, a little bit early, a little bit too hard in that opening 100 meters.
00:48:52 Her pace dropped off a bit towards the end.
00:48:54 Samadhi Matsud takes the win.
00:48:55 Xiangling Xiang in second place.
00:48:57 Maria Oteyza coming home in third.
00:49:00 And that positions us very nicely heading towards the laser run.
00:49:06 I'm curious to know where this leaves Corenza Bryson after the swim.
00:49:09 She's going to be ahead without question.
00:49:11 She had a big lead. It was 30 seconds or so, I think.
00:49:14 Wasn't it something like that?
00:49:16 I think she probably had at least a 15, 20 second lead.
00:49:23 Samadhi Matsud makes her way out of the pool.
00:49:25 Quite out of breath there.
00:49:26 She really gave it some in that second 100 meters.
00:49:29 So, you know, highlights of the swimming.
00:49:33 [Music]
00:49:39 [Music]
00:50:03 So Samadhi Matsud second half of that swimming heat.
00:50:09 Let's have a look at the sound exam.
00:50:10 Bryson with a 16 point lead.
00:50:16 Oteyza and Samadhi Matsud on 5.06.
00:50:18 But let's look at ninth place because this is what really matters.
00:50:21 Burmikina on 4.84.
00:50:26 4.84 the number to remember then.
00:50:29 And that's a bit of a gap, isn't it, between Klakova.
00:50:31 Arseye is a quick runner.
00:50:33 Wittke is a quick runner as well.
00:50:34 Prokopenko, the fact they're all quick runners,
00:50:37 it's just who can capitalize.
00:50:38 We saw Venkarskyty go from 18th place to 7th in semifinal 8.
00:50:44 It's not worn out anyone at this point.
00:50:49 So that's where things stand after the fencing burners front and the swimming.
00:50:54 It's now time to turn our attention to the ever exciting laser run.
00:50:59 But before we do that, let's just take a look back at some of the final moments from the swimming.
00:51:02 We'll be back in a moment.
00:51:05 [MUSIC PLAYING]
00:51:08 [MUSIC PLAYING]
00:51:11 [MUSIC PLAYING]
00:51:14 [MUSIC PLAYING]
00:51:18 [MUSIC PLAYING]
00:51:21 (lively music)
00:51:23 So those were the swimming highlights
00:51:50 of the semi-final B.
00:51:51 Three heats done and dusted,
00:51:54 and we say goodbye to the pool
00:51:56 as we move things over to the Laser Run Arena.
00:51:59 It's, as you can see, pretty accurate,
00:52:01 the description of the arena.
00:52:03 It's a short walk to the Laser Run.
00:52:07 It's a one-stadium show here in Ankara.
00:52:10 It's five times 600 meters, four laser shooting series,
00:52:14 as the athletes progress in this competition.
00:52:20 Of course, there are no medals won or lost today.
00:52:22 It's only about making it into that top nine.
00:52:26 You wanna get yourself secured for the finals on Saturday.
00:52:30 So here we go.
00:52:31 Semi-final B.
00:52:33 We already have the nine names making it
00:52:35 to the final from semi-final A,
00:52:37 which, of course, took place this morning.
00:52:41 And we'll have our second nine athletes
00:52:44 making it shortly after this Laser Run.
00:52:49 So final few athletes are making their way
00:52:52 from the pool to the Laser Run Arena.
00:52:54 Couple of athletes in the first two heats
00:52:56 have already started their warmup.
00:52:58 So we have a little over 11 minutes to go
00:53:04 to the start of the Laser Run.
00:53:06 This is, of course, the time that the athletes
00:53:09 take to transition, change, and kind of fine-tune the details
00:53:14 and not doing that much warmup.
00:53:17 Of course, they've done that
00:53:18 during their general warmup time,
00:53:20 which, of course, occurred before the fencing bonus round.
00:53:24 Just a bit of last touches.
00:53:26 Putting their numbers on their jerseys
00:53:30 and checking that everything's okay in the range.
00:53:33 Well, it's kind of ironic that the athletes
00:53:37 have this time to do that,
00:53:38 and even minor issues don't really come up in the warmup.
00:53:46 I mean, an athlete such as Elodie Clouvel
00:53:50 was doing really well in the warmup,
00:53:51 did really well on her first shoot,
00:53:53 and then things just come and stuck later on,
00:53:57 had an issue with her pistol,
00:53:59 which cost her a spot in that final.
00:54:02 But it's all eyes on this semifinal.
00:54:05 Be Emma Whitaker currently in 13th place overall.
00:54:10 She's 54 seconds off the lead.
00:54:15 And only 20 seconds off ninth place.
00:54:19 But before we talk about that,
00:54:21 let's just move to James in the field with an interview.
00:54:23 - Marco, good to talk to you, British coach.
00:54:27 Let's start by talking about Corenza Bryson.
00:54:29 She's been in very, very good form today.
00:54:31 Her fencing, incredible.
00:54:33 She was able to take a little bit of time in swimming.
00:54:34 She's in a very good position.
00:54:36 What are you expecting from her in this laser run?
00:54:39 - I make the good competition from yesterday for fencing.
00:54:42 I maintain the same situation for the whole competition,
00:54:45 maintain without no push a lot during the competition,
00:54:49 this, and then during the final.
00:54:51 And after tomorrow and again, the rest of the competition.
00:54:53 - When you are in the position that Corenza is in,
00:54:56 where you have a good lead,
00:54:58 can you take it a little bit slower in the laser run,
00:55:01 or is she gonna be giving it everything?
00:55:02 - I need to manage better that situation,
00:55:04 because I also, the other opponent, I stay near,
00:55:09 is close to the distance.
00:55:10 In this case, I need to manage very well these things.
00:55:13 - We saw, obviously, what happened with Elodie Cluvel earlier
00:55:16 where she dropped from first place to outside
00:55:18 in case she had a problem with her pistol.
00:55:19 But you have to remain focused
00:55:21 the whole way through a semi-final, don't you?
00:55:22 - I need to remain always the focus.
00:55:24 The competition finish when you arrive, not before.
00:55:28 I'm sorry.
00:55:30 - Ultimately, this competition is all about
00:55:31 getting inside that top nine, obviously.
00:55:33 We'll focus on the British athletes
00:55:35 because you are a British coach.
00:55:35 Emma Whittaker, what's her chances, do you think?
00:55:37 - I need to shoot well and run well.
00:55:40 And that's a little bit chance ever.
00:55:42 But I need to watch, repeat,
00:55:43 what happened during the shooting range.
00:55:47 - And just in terms of any other athletes,
00:55:49 you've got the likes of Marianna Seau.
00:55:51 She's a very quick athlete.
00:55:52 Are you looking behind you a little bit as well
00:55:54 and seeing who some of the faster runners are?
00:55:56 - Yeah, yeah, yeah, sure, sure, sure.
00:55:57 Repeat, the competition is very close.
00:55:59 In this case, one series is not good,
00:56:02 it's not fantastic for the rank.
00:56:05 But I think, I watch positive, this situation.
00:56:08 - Marco, a pleasure to talk to you.
00:56:09 I know you're a busy man.
00:56:10 I'll let you go focus on the athletes.
00:56:11 Thanks, my friend, appreciate it.
00:56:12 - Bye-bye, bye-bye, thanks.
00:56:13 Good, thank you.
00:56:14 - Thank you, thank you so much.
00:56:16 - So, British coach.
00:56:18 He has two British athletes here in semifinal B.
00:56:22 Corenza Bryson, who's currently leading,
00:56:24 and Emma Whittaker, who is down in 13th place,
00:56:27 looking to make it into those top nine.
00:56:29 So as things stand, Corenza Bryson is 16 seconds
00:56:34 off the next athlete, who's Sanat Masoud and Mario Teza,
00:56:38 will be starting together in joint second.
00:56:40 That doesn't mean that she's gonna go that slow
00:56:46 in the laser, and she still has to maintain her position.
00:56:49 And the athletes behind her are just gonna try
00:56:52 and catch her the entire way.
00:56:53 So, it's all about finding that pace and rhythm
00:56:58 that keeps you in the competition
00:56:59 without burning too much energy.
00:57:01 She has to keep that energy for tomorrow.
00:57:03 And with those 27 victories, let me tell you,
00:57:06 I think she is one of the favorites for gold.
00:57:09 Again, anything can happen in modern pentathlon.
00:57:11 We still have riding to go on Saturday.
00:57:15 A lot of things could change
00:57:20 as we approach the start of this laser run.
00:57:28 Big names in this semifinal B.
00:57:30 A lot of athletes from this semifinal
00:57:33 have actually already qualified to the Olympics,
00:57:35 and just trying to secure their position
00:57:39 and tighten their grip on that qualification,
00:57:42 because it is two qualification spots per country,
00:57:47 but it's down to the country at the end
00:57:49 to make the decision who gets to go to the Olympic Games.
00:57:54 Xiang Mengxiang with that little warmup we see there.
00:58:01 She's trying to get herself and her muscles ready
00:58:06 for the start of this laser run at Kuala Lumpur.
00:58:12 So, we heard from Corenza Bryson's coach, Marco,
00:58:18 there about his thoughts about Corenza
00:58:21 heading into this laser run.
00:58:25 There you can see Corenza warming up at the shooting range.
00:58:28 Let's just take an in-depth look
00:58:30 into some of Corenza's achievements so far in her career.
00:58:34 Senior world ranking of third in the world,
00:58:37 and Olympic ranking of eighth.
00:58:40 She's only had 11 World Cup starts.
00:58:42 Let's remind ourselves of that.
00:58:44 Two World Championship medals,
00:58:45 one coming at youth level,
00:58:47 one coming in the World Championships in Bath last year.
00:58:52 She's never won an Olympic medal,
00:58:53 but she's not had an Olympic opportunity,
00:58:56 which one is potentially on the cards for Corenza Bryson,
00:58:59 who is in really, really good form.
00:59:02 And in terms of how she compares to other athletes,
00:59:04 she is one of the best fencers out there.
00:59:06 A bit slower in the pool,
00:59:07 but she's very quick on the laser run arena.
00:59:09 She's a quick runner, she's a good shooter,
00:59:11 she's a consistent shooter,
00:59:13 and she's also, by the way, a very good rider.
00:59:15 Corenza Bryson's performance compared
00:59:18 to the other athletes on your screen there.
00:59:20 But how does she start races and how does she finish them?
00:59:24 Let's take a little bit of a look
00:59:26 in terms of her handicap analysis.
00:59:28 So as you can see, consistently moving up the field.
00:59:31 In Sofia last year, starting in fourth place
00:59:33 with a 14-second deficit on first place,
00:59:36 but ended up winning the race
00:59:37 to take her first World Cup gold.
00:59:39 In Ankara last year, she moved up from 11th to 6th
00:59:43 in the World Championships in Bath.
00:59:44 She picked up her first World Championship
00:59:45 senior bronze medalist, moving up from sixth to third.
00:59:49 In Cairo, she continued that good runner form,
00:59:51 starting in fourth, finishing in third.
00:59:54 And here in semifinals, she is starting in first place
00:59:58 with a 16-second advantage.
01:00:01 You would imagine, Mariam, this will be
01:00:03 a fairly straightforward cruise
01:00:05 to the final for Corenza Bryson.
01:00:07 - Yeah, definitely.
01:00:08 I think no athlete can play it safe from the beginning.
01:00:11 I think she's gonna start with a good pace,
01:00:14 first two 600 meters, and then see where things are
01:00:17 and where the other athletes are and take it from there.
01:00:21 (crowd chattering)
01:00:24 - So Rebecca Langer on your screens there.
01:00:30 She picked up a silver medal here in
01:00:34 Ankara last season.
01:00:40 Let's take a quick look at some of Rebecca Langer's
01:00:45 statistics.
01:00:46 She picked up that silver, as mentioned.
01:00:48 That's the only senior medal that she's picked up
01:00:51 from 54th in the Olympic rankings,
01:00:54 seventh in the world rankings, 23 World Cup starts.
01:00:59 Let's see how she compares to the other athletes
01:01:03 in terms of her statistics.
01:01:04 - I'll tell you now, the fencing's gonna be above average.
01:01:09 - Yeah, she's a great fencer, isn't she?
01:01:11 - Yeah, world record holder when it comes to bonus round.
01:01:15 - Yeah, so yeah, as you can see there in the top eight,
01:01:17 well, 8% above average compared to everybody else.
01:01:21 4% above average and bang, middle in terms of swimming.
01:01:26 Let's have a look at where she starts and finishes
01:01:31 in laser run.
01:01:32 I think we might see some mixed results here.
01:01:33 It's just a guess, let's have a look.
01:01:35 So in Cairo, she started ninth and finished in 11th,
01:01:39 whereas Ankara last year started in fourth
01:01:42 and moved up two places to pick up that silver medal.
01:01:44 She's fairly consistent in laser run
01:01:47 in the Bath World Championships last year.
01:01:48 Started fifth, finished fifth.
01:01:50 Rebecca Langer is, in my opinion,
01:01:52 becoming more and more consistent
01:01:54 and she could be a good athlete to watch in Paris.
01:01:59 - Yeah, I mean, she got her first World Cup medal last year
01:02:02 and the form she's in right now,
01:02:06 you'd say she'd pick up another one this year.
01:02:08 - Good confidence from Rebecca Langer
01:02:10 that she's taken since that World Cup silver medal.
01:02:13 I saw a lot of the time, I just feel like
01:02:15 when an athlete picks up a medal for the first time,
01:02:17 it gives them that confidence to push on.
01:02:19 - Definitely, I think it's a huge turning point
01:02:22 in her career and she'll take it and run with it.
01:02:26 She's not gonna stop there for sure.
01:02:27 She's a very--
01:02:29 - She'll take it and hopefully run and shoot with it.
01:02:31 - Yeah.
01:02:32 She's a very determined athlete
01:02:35 and we expect some big things from her.
01:02:39 Some of the muscle that's in your shot there,
01:02:41 she's starting in second place,
01:02:44 just 16 seconds off the lead.
01:02:46 - So just a couple of minutes away
01:03:02 from the start of the race here
01:03:05 and in a minute's time we will take a look
01:03:07 at the standings to see who is starting where.
01:03:12 It's all about getting inside that top nine.
01:03:18 Marianne Nassau just going through things,
01:03:28 just checking the timings and seeing how far behind she is.
01:03:32 She's got a bit of time to make up.
01:03:34 She knows she's gonna have to give it some
01:03:36 to try and get herself into this final.
01:03:38 So let's take a look at the start list.
01:03:45 Bryson starts top of the pack
01:03:48 and you can see they are periodically spread down.
01:03:51 16, 16, 25, 22, I mean that is a really strong fence
01:03:56 and swim from Bryson who's put herself
01:03:59 in a very good position.
01:04:01 Handling eighth place, Pema Kina in ninth.
01:04:03 38 seconds off the lead
01:04:05 but let's keep in mind that 38 seconds
01:04:08 as we look on the second page
01:04:10 and see just how high they have to jump.
01:04:14 So it is seven seconds, a gap between ninth and 10th.
01:04:17 Chlacova in 10th place.
01:04:19 Kureyeva is in 11th place.
01:04:24 She is a little bit further back
01:04:28 but I feel that so Mwiska could be problematic.
01:04:31 Uds as well is not a million miles away.
01:04:35 Let's see what happens though
01:04:36 because just a reminder,
01:04:37 Venkatesh Gaiti started in 18th place
01:04:41 and finished comfortably inside that top.
01:04:44 Inside that top nine.
01:04:57 So there you can see Marie Otayda.
01:04:59 We've not spoken too much about Marie Otayda today.
01:05:01 She's starting in third place.
01:05:04 Hoping to shoot well so she can fire her way
01:05:07 into Saturday's final.
01:05:10 This could be a good final.
01:05:13 Semi-final B was solid.
01:05:16 Sorry, semi-final A was a solid final.
01:05:20 At semi-final we should see something of the like
01:05:23 here in semi-final B.
01:05:26 (birds chirping)
01:05:29 So final 30 seconds before the start of this race.
01:05:38 Promises to be a good one.
01:05:40 We have some of the stronger runners
01:05:42 in the back end of the field
01:05:44 so be keeping an eye out on them as things progress.
01:05:49 - 20 seconds to start.
01:05:55 (birds chirping)
01:05:57 - So 20 seconds away from the start of semi-final B.
01:05:59 Semi-final A was gripping from start to finish.
01:06:02 There were sub-blocks happening all throughout the race.
01:06:05 We lost two of our favorites for the final.
01:06:08 What's gonna happen in the semi-final B?
01:06:11 We'll find out soon.
01:06:12 Corenza Bryson leads us out of the blocks
01:06:16 with a 16 second head start
01:06:18 over Salma Abdul-Muqsud and Marie Otayda
01:06:21 who are both locked on 506 points each.
01:06:25 Bryson has a solid lead
01:06:27 and I don't think we're gonna see a push too hard
01:06:29 on this opening lap.
01:06:31 And there we go, Abdul-Muqsud and Otayda.
01:06:33 And Otayda, by the way, somehow opened up
01:06:36 like a second from the small gap.
01:06:37 But that was, it seemed like a lightning fast start
01:06:40 from Otayda, that.
01:06:41 - Yeah, you wonder whether she's pushing too hard
01:06:45 at the beginning of this race
01:06:46 or just kind of securing her position.
01:06:48 - She's opened up a gap over Abdul-Muqsud
01:06:51 already those two were locked on points
01:06:53 and already the gap is probably about two seconds.
01:06:56 So Otayda is quick off the blocks.
01:06:58 She's pushing quite hard here.
01:07:01 She has a 40 odd second start.
01:07:06 In fact, longer 40, yeah, well,
01:07:07 actually sorry, a little bit less.
01:07:08 30 seconds lead over
01:07:10 I think in 10th place.
01:07:12 So she's looking comfortable at the minute,
01:07:14 but yeah, a lot can change in a petestal as we know.
01:07:18 Bryson now through the back of the course.
01:07:20 You can see those puffs of dust.
01:07:22 It's quite dusty here.
01:07:23 It's been quite windy.
01:07:24 We've just blown a lot of the sand around the arena.
01:07:26 - Three more athletes to get off of that start finish straight
01:07:33 before we have all 18 athletes on course,
01:07:35 but it is Corenza Bryson making her way
01:07:38 back to the shooting range.
01:07:40 - Is it quite lonely out front
01:07:41 when you're leading a race that far ahead?
01:07:44 - I think it's a good kind of loneliness.
01:07:47 - It's a good kind of loneliness, a happy loneliness.
01:07:50 So just a reminder,
01:07:52 the first lap is just a straight 600 meter run
01:07:55 before then the athletes make their way around
01:07:59 and head to the shooting range.
01:08:01 It's all about shooting and keeping your composure.
01:08:04 And Amira Anzal must say,
01:08:05 is looking reasonably quick out there.
01:08:07 You say she's been working hard on her running,
01:08:09 so it'd be interesting if she can keep up.
01:08:11 - Yeah, well, only time can tell, but again, we've...
01:08:16 The thing is with Anzal,
01:08:17 she's good over the first couple of laps
01:08:19 and then drops off on the second couple of laps.
01:08:20 I'm wondering to see if that's something
01:08:22 she's able to make a significant progress with.
01:08:25 But Corenza Bryson is now making her way
01:08:28 towards the shooting range.
01:08:31 Eye patch goes on.
01:08:32 And there we go, Bryson is beginning her shooting.
01:08:38 There we go, two out of five for Bryson,
01:08:42 three out of five, four out of five.
01:08:44 This is solid shooting from Bryson.
01:08:46 Got a bit of time to play with here.
01:08:47 Five out of five, Bryson's away safely.
01:08:49 Abdul-Muqsood next at the range alongside Eretaza.
01:08:53 Shot for shot so far, Eretaza misses her third.
01:08:57 Good shooting from Eretaza, has to be said.
01:09:00 Away goes Abdul-Muqsood.
01:09:01 That's a 10 second shoot from Eretaza, that's good to see.
01:09:03 So Eretaza's shooting looks on form today.
01:09:06 Sean is a little bit slower here.
01:09:09 Has allowed some of the others to catch up,
01:09:10 so Sean gets away in fourth place.
01:09:13 Dominic with a good shoot, as is Lange.
01:09:15 That's a great shoot from Lange.
01:09:17 Potapenko is away, Pernikina is away.
01:09:20 Andel struggling at the range.
01:09:22 So a 20 second shoot from Andel.
01:09:24 - Yeah, Andel is now in ninth place, so.
01:09:28 - She's dropped to place.
01:09:29 So Andel with work to do, goes from eighth to ninth.
01:09:33 If anyone has made up some time,
01:09:34 Arceo with a slow shoot as well.
01:09:36 Arceo's shooting's not been that quick this year.
01:09:39 She is in 10th place, and there is a 12 second gap
01:09:42 between Arceo and Andel.
01:09:44 If Arceo can halve that shooting time,
01:09:46 I think she's got a chance here, actually.
01:09:48 - She's running through that field here.
01:09:49 - Like a fast, isn't she?
01:09:51 - And the Vachkova as well is catching up.
01:09:54 - Yeah, some quick runners.
01:09:55 Really quick runners.
01:09:58 - You can see them at the back of your shots, yeah.
01:10:00 - Kureyeva as well is being closed down by Emelwyska
01:10:02 a little bit further down.
01:10:04 So you can see that is the gap between ninth and 10th.
01:10:08 Andel is being followed by Mariana Arceo.
01:10:13 Vachkova, yeah, she's a quick runner as well.
01:10:15 There's a lot of quick runners in Vendalfa
01:10:17 in these days.
01:10:18 The running is just something they've all been improving
01:10:20 and all been getting better at.
01:10:21 We've got some lightning fast runners.
01:10:24 So Andel holding pace at the moment,
01:10:26 holding on to ninth place.
01:10:27 And actually, it looks like Potapenko's dropped down
01:10:30 a little bit there, hasn't she?
01:10:32 So I wonder if any of those top nine
01:10:33 get pulled back into this battle.
01:10:35 We have only had one shooting routine so far.
01:10:40 And Bryson has a 10 second lead over Abdul-Muqsud.
01:10:44 It was 16 seconds.
01:10:46 And you can see a good battle here between Arceo
01:10:48 and is that Lucy Klakova just behind her?
01:10:50 - Yeah.
01:10:51 I think it's gonna be a race till the end with these two.
01:10:56 - Well, I think Klakova knows if she keeps pace with Arceo,
01:10:59 she's going to be quicker than most people on the course
01:11:01 'cause Arceo is such a quick runner.
01:11:03 So Arceo is dragging Klakova with her.
01:11:08 Bryson back in the range.
01:11:10 (announcer speaking in foreign language)
01:11:12 A little bit of a sticky patch here.
01:11:14 Makes it three out of the five.
01:11:15 If she can get this done now.
01:11:17 It's not the quickest shooting this from Bryson
01:11:19 by her standards anyway.
01:11:20 Four out of five.
01:11:23 17 seconds shoot for Bryson away.
01:11:25 Abdul-Muqsud and Chong and Orteza
01:11:28 have really closed that gap up to Bryson now.
01:11:30 It's not gonna cause Bryson too much of a headache,
01:11:32 but it's not their fastest shooting.
01:11:34 Dominjak with another quick shoot.
01:11:39 - This is the battle for ninth.
01:11:40 - Yeah.
01:11:42 Abdul is slow again.
01:11:43 Lange is away, Prokopenko away,
01:11:45 as Pernokin is away.
01:11:46 Lange is a little bit slow at the range here as well.
01:11:49 So Lange with a 17 second shoot.
01:11:51 Abdul needs to be quicker here.
01:11:52 Klakova is about to close in on Abdul.
01:11:55 Arceo is slow as well.
01:11:57 So the battle for ninth is now in the hands of Klakova,
01:12:01 but Arceo is still in the range
01:12:02 and Korojeva is away with a good shoot.
01:12:05 And Prokopenko, Whittaker with a 19 second shoot.
01:12:09 Krobera with an eight second shoot.
01:12:11 Who knows, Lockwood still changing this.
01:12:13 Erdos with a seven, seven second shoot.
01:12:14 That's brilliant.
01:12:16 Uds is just trying to round things off here.
01:12:18 14 second shoot.
01:12:19 Anna Giertz still at the range.
01:12:21 Exciting stuff, this.
01:12:23 - Yeah, I mean, we're quiet,
01:12:26 but we're observing the field at the moment
01:12:29 'cause these athletes are moving up pretty quickly.
01:12:31 Mira Anzil is dropped out of the top 10.
01:12:35 - And you can ominously see for the rest of the pack,
01:12:38 Korojeva and Arceo.
01:12:40 Whittaker is there as well.
01:12:43 Yeah, there's still a lot of changes,
01:12:45 I feel, to come in this race.
01:12:46 It's setting itself up nicely for a conclusion.
01:12:50 Top seven, I've got a good little gap there.
01:12:52 Then it's Lange, Klakova on exactly the same time
01:12:56 as they cross the checkpoint.
01:12:57 Abdul is five seconds back
01:12:59 and I feel possibly in free fall here.
01:13:01 Arceo is just eight seconds off those top nine.
01:13:05 Whittaker is 11 seconds or so.
01:13:07 Korojeva and Prokopenko.
01:13:10 Krubera's giving herself a chance here as well
01:13:12 in 15th place.
01:13:13 Erdos not a million miles behind.
01:13:14 - So two more shooting series to go
01:13:22 as our leaders make it across the start/finish straight
01:13:25 and heading to their third shoot.
01:13:28 Ambitiously, I'm going to say anybody can qualify here
01:13:30 as Arceo looks to go around the outside of Andal.
01:13:33 So this is the point of the race
01:13:34 where Andal does often start to lose her pace
01:13:38 and it seems to be happening again
01:13:40 as Arceo moves up into 10th place.
01:13:44 So Arceo, one place off a qualification
01:13:46 if she needs to shoot well,
01:13:48 if she is to get in and amongst it.
01:13:50 Our lead athletes throughout the range,
01:13:51 that's a better shoot there from Bryson,
01:13:52 a sub-10 second shoot from Bryson.
01:13:54 Orteza's shoot has been fantastic today.
01:13:56 Abdelmoukoud, sub-15 seconds.
01:13:58 Chong and Dominic are out.
01:14:01 Permakina, anybody going to get stuck here?
01:14:04 It doesn't look like it.
01:14:05 Potapenko, what about Klakova?
01:14:06 She's not made that first target yet.
01:14:08 So Klakova needs to start making some targets here
01:14:11 if she doesn't want to get herself caught up
01:14:13 in that battle behind her.
01:14:15 Lange at the range, Wittke at the range.
01:14:18 And Klakova with a 15 seconds.
01:14:20 A good recovery actually, isn't it?
01:14:23 And there you go, Andal with a fantastic shoot,
01:14:25 sub-10 seconds.
01:14:26 Potapenko could be dangerous.
01:14:27 Lange is there or thereabouts.
01:14:29 Arceo gets away with an 18 second shoot.
01:14:31 That's not good enough for Arceo,
01:14:32 but she is a fast runner and she's closing in.
01:14:35 Lange is a fast runner as well,
01:14:36 but Lange, don't forget, started this race in fourth place
01:14:40 and has not had the semifinal she would have hoped for.
01:14:43 Bryson three seconds ahead of Orteza.
01:14:45 Six seconds further back is Abdelmoukoud.
01:14:48 Song is in fourth place.
01:14:51 - But Amir is back in the mix now.
01:14:53 She's in ninth place, but looking back.
01:14:57 - It was a great shoot, wasn't it, from her?
01:14:58 - Yeah, I think she's pretty much.
01:15:02 - She's getting caught by some big runners here.
01:15:04 And Anastasia Potapenko started in 16th place.
01:15:07 He's closing in on a qualification spot,
01:15:09 but Rebecca Lange, Mariana Arceo,
01:15:12 and then a bit further back is Khorayeva,
01:15:16 who has made a good race so far.
01:15:20 Lange moves up into ninth place
01:15:22 as she's taken a qualification spot back off of.
01:15:24 - Looks like Prokopenko and Mariana Arceo
01:15:28 are managing to catch up to Rebecca Lange.
01:15:31 Moves up to ninth.
01:15:32 - So Mariana Arceo storms around and into 10th place,
01:15:36 but it is absolutely neck and neck
01:15:38 for the battle for ninth.
01:15:40 And Lange is still hanging on.
01:15:42 Andel is not too far off, by the way.
01:15:43 If she can shoot like she did last time,
01:15:45 she still has a chance.
01:15:46 But she is now in the battle with some big runners
01:15:49 and knows Prokopenko and Arceo and Lange.
01:15:53 - Arceo's taking that ninth spot from Prokopenko.
01:15:56 - Yep, Arceo just sneaks into the lead of that battle
01:16:00 for ninth place now.
01:16:01 Lange's there.
01:16:02 She's looking like she's tiring,
01:16:03 but Arceo looks like she's got a lot more to give.
01:16:05 There's more energy in those legs
01:16:07 as we approach the final shooting routine.
01:16:10 Very calmly and collectively,
01:16:12 those top four arrive at the range.
01:16:14 A good chance to practice shooting under pressure.
01:16:16 Abdelmaksou shooting very well here.
01:16:18 Chong shooting well as well.
01:16:19 Bryson's made a few in a row.
01:16:21 Bryson Stein stormed through this.
01:16:22 Great shooting from Bryson, who makes it an 8.71.
01:16:25 She flew through those last few shots.
01:16:28 So Krenza Bryson, Sam Radimantsoud, and Chong Leng Song
01:16:31 are in a league of their own at the moment.
01:16:34 Away they go.
01:16:34 And Tanya Domignac in a good position.
01:16:36 Or Tej is not too far off as well.
01:16:38 Pamikina is in sixth place.
01:16:40 They'll all be happy with that.
01:16:41 Prokopenko, Krakow has done a great job.
01:16:44 She's in eighth place.
01:16:45 But this is the battle for ninth
01:16:47 as they arrive at the range.
01:16:49 Prokopenko is out in ninth,
01:16:50 miles and miles ahead of Mariana Arceo.
01:16:53 It looks like Emira Ndila and Hrjeva
01:16:55 are pulled back into that mix.
01:16:57 But is that number 16 on your screen there
01:17:01 who's up in ninth place?
01:17:02 Yeah, Arceo has lost 10 seconds.
01:17:04 I don't think she's going to do it now.
01:17:06 She is giving it absolutely everything.
01:17:08 She saved some energy for this final sprint.
01:17:10 And you'll see her moving back into 10th place,
01:17:12 but she has to catch 10 seconds on Prokopenko,
01:17:14 who is a quick runner.
01:17:15 And Arceo again caught a little bit of traffic here.
01:17:17 She's very congested there.
01:17:18 She goes to go around the outside of Hrjeva.
01:17:23 Actually in front of her, but yeah, Hrjeva
01:17:25 is holding ground there.
01:17:27 And eventually Arceo gets around her,
01:17:29 but she's lost a little bit of time there.
01:17:31 I think Arceo probably knows her shooting
01:17:32 is not being good enough this year,
01:17:34 not being good enough today,
01:17:35 not enough to move her inside that top 10,
01:17:37 unless can she make a last minute dash
01:17:40 towards Prokopenko, who's had a really good laser on.
01:17:42 The top eight are safely through.
01:17:44 You can see their names on your screen there.
01:17:46 They will not be challenged at this point of the race.
01:17:49 And Marianna Arceo has to find some electric pace.
01:17:52 There you can see the athletes she's trying to catch,
01:17:54 Anastasia Prokopenko.
01:17:55 They're on the same screen together,
01:17:57 but I think it's going to be tough from this point.
01:17:59 In fact, Rebecca Lange is really giving Arceo a battle,
01:18:03 but I think neither of these athletes
01:18:05 are going to make it through to the final.
01:18:07 Let's see what the gap is.
01:18:10 So there you can see Prokopenko.
01:18:12 And yeah, it's not going to be enough
01:18:14 for those athletes coming through.
01:18:16 It's been a very solid laser on Fulopokopenko.
01:18:19 There you can see the gap.
01:18:23 Prokopenko is gaining on those top eight,
01:18:25 and they're not going to be too worried
01:18:27 about what position they finish in.
01:18:29 The defensive Bryson has taken her foot
01:18:30 completely off the gas,
01:18:32 and they all are feeling, I think,
01:18:34 probably pretty safe at this point, aren't they?
01:18:37 They've got Lange and Arceo chasing down in the background,
01:18:41 but there they are, your top nine,
01:18:43 your finalists for Super Saturday.
01:18:47 Across the line, they all come.
01:18:50 And there they are, the top nine,
01:18:52 all those names on your screen there.
01:18:55 - Yeah, Lange found that bit of extra pace at the end there,
01:18:58 finishing in 10th place.
01:18:59 - I think Arceo possibly accepted her fate there.
01:19:01 Good work by Hureyeva.
01:19:04 - I think that's the first time we've ever seen her
01:19:07 not move up the standings.
01:19:08 She started in 12th and finished in 12th.
01:19:11 - Not the performance she would have wanted.
01:19:13 Disappointing shoot from her.
01:19:15 But again, it's up and down with Pentathlon.
01:19:18 Final couple of athletes make their way
01:19:21 across the start/finish straight.
01:19:22 Anna Yurt is across the line.
01:19:25 - And Whiska went backwards in that laser run.
01:19:26 It wasn't to be for her today.
01:19:28 - And he's, oops, finished his--
01:19:31 - Yeah, he's just come back from injury as well.
01:19:32 It's worth reminding ourselves of.
01:19:34 So she's obviously not quite up to her full fitness yet,
01:19:39 but that's all right.
01:19:41 So just a moment of reflection there for Amina Handel.
01:19:53 And we can officially announce which athletes
01:20:09 have qualified.
01:20:10 I say unofficially, unofficially.
01:20:12 And now switch athletes have made it through to the final,
01:20:16 starting with semifinal B,
01:20:17 'cause that's one we've just seen.
01:20:18 Grenza Bryson, Samraj Maksud,
01:20:20 Marie-Od Tejda Lange dropped out.
01:20:22 She's not gonna be there.
01:20:23 Chongming Chong, Elena Potapenko, Natalia Dominyak,
01:20:27 Valeria Permikina, Lucy Khlakova,
01:20:30 and Anastasia Prokopenko all through from semifinal B.
01:20:33 A little bit earlier today,
01:20:34 we had a very exciting semifinal A,
01:20:36 of which Sunwoo Kim, Juliana Batasheva,
01:20:39 Aleksandra Frazer, Elisa Sotero,
01:20:42 Malakish Mount, Tamara Vega,
01:20:44 Blanka Bauer, Maria Gnedchik,
01:20:47 and Juntaro Venkal.
01:20:49 Skatey all qualified for the final.
01:20:52 We're just taking a look back at the replays then
01:20:54 of the semifinal B laser run.
01:20:59 Grenza Bryson looked very calm and cool, didn't she?
01:21:02 As we expected.
01:21:03 Marianna Tseo had a battle that whole race.
01:21:06 - Yeah, she, Marianna Tseo was in and out of the phase
01:21:08 top nine.
01:21:09 Bryson though, I think she felt a little bit of pressure.
01:21:13 Her shooting didn't go exactly as planned.
01:21:15 Not all of the shoots.
01:21:16 I think her final one was like eight seconds.
01:21:19 - It got gradually better actually,
01:21:20 I think, didn't it?
01:21:21 - Yeah, but pretty consistent athlete she is.
01:21:25 And yeah, didn't need to push that hard today.
01:21:29 Saving that for Saturday.
01:21:31 - Yeah, it does help, doesn't it?
01:21:32 Save a bit of energy for Super Saturday.
01:21:35 She's got a day of rest now as well.
01:21:37 So a little bit of light exercise, you'd think,
01:21:39 for Bryson tomorrow, but nothing too hard.
01:21:41 She's had that amazing fence
01:21:43 and she'll be saving her best performance for Saturday.
01:21:45 She looks to get herself on the podium
01:21:47 and obviously it'll be a very exciting finish
01:21:49 to the race, you feel, on Saturday.
01:21:52 If Bryson can build her lead,
01:21:53 'cause she is such a good rider,
01:21:55 could be really interesting, couldn't it,
01:21:56 to see just how much of a lead she can build
01:21:59 because she got such a good fencing score.
01:22:01 (crowd chattering)
01:22:04 - No Elena McKellie or Michelle Goullash
01:22:08 at this World Cup.
01:22:09 You had them both in Cairo.
01:22:12 Elena McKellie dropping out of the semi-finals.
01:22:14 She's had a bit of an injury, she's nursing.
01:22:17 And of course, Goullash took the gold.
01:22:18 She was in unbelievable form.
01:22:20 Goullash is looking like an Olympic medalist in the making.
01:22:24 - Olympic gold medalist in the making.
01:22:27 - Yeah, I think it's definitely possible.
01:22:31 - It wasn't the day for Lange and for Arceo.
01:22:35 Now you can see our top nine all coming over together,
01:22:40 just making sure they were safely all three.
01:22:44 - Yeah, honorable mention to Prokopenko
01:22:46 who made it from 16th place up into those top nine spots.
01:22:51 - Romina Andal gave it everything, but it wasn't to be.
01:22:58 - Jessica Bryson and Rebecca Lange sharing a moment.
01:23:01 Let's take a look then at the standings from semi-final B.
01:23:05 Abdul, Maksud, Sean, Dominjak, Pamukkina, Bryson,
01:23:08 Oteyzo, Prokopenko, Khadkava, and Prokopenko,
01:23:12 all separated by one second.
01:23:15 That was done intentionally as well.
01:23:18 It wasn't as dramatic a finish as those results might suggest.
01:23:22 They all managed to get themselves safely
01:23:23 inside that top nine.
01:23:25 They, though, missed out on a place in the final.
01:23:29 What are those nine athletes on your screen there?
01:23:32 Rebecca Lange, Vilyaleta Hureyeva,
01:23:37 Marianna Arceo, Sofia Cabrera,
01:23:39 Emilia Andal, Rita Erdos, Emma Whittaker,
01:23:42 Anais Uds, and Anna Yertz,
01:23:45 all unable to make it into the final.
01:23:50 So that concludes semi-final B.
01:23:54 It is, of course, Super Saturday next up for the women
01:23:57 before we have the men's semi-finals tomorrow.
01:24:01 Let's take a look back, though, at the images of the day.
