00:01:29 a brilliant World Cup season,
00:01:31 and the athletes, of course, preparing themselves
00:01:34 for the World Cup Final.
00:01:36 This is the first of two semifinals
00:01:40 here in the women's semifinal.
00:01:43 We have, of course, the men's individual semifinals
00:01:45 tomorrow, semifinal A and semifinal B
00:01:48 taking place there.
00:01:49 It's, of course, the second events here in Turkey.
00:01:53 Weather hasn't been our friend so far in this competition.
00:01:55 It's a little bit warmer this time around,
00:01:57 17 degrees Celsius,
00:01:59 but we are expecting some thunderstorms
00:02:02 a little bit later today,
00:02:04 which could, of course, cause some problems
00:02:05 for the athletes competing in semifinal B.
00:02:10 But, of course, tension is now on semifinal A,

00:02:34 starts, of course, with the riding.
00:02:37 And you can see there are the ten obstacles
00:02:40 that the athletes have to make their way past.
00:02:42 Then things move over to the fencing bonus round.
00:02:46 The ranking round, of course, happening the day before.
00:02:49 An extra two points available for every bounce won
00:02:52 in the fencing bonus round.
00:02:53 It's then over to the swimming pool.
00:02:56 It's a 25-meter pool here in Ankara
00:03:00 just before a quick, swift move over to the laser run.
00:03:03 There is the start of the laser run course.
00:03:06 The first lap is affectionately known as the formation lap.
00:03:09 The athletes don't have to shoot on the first lap,
00:03:11 but on the second lap onwards
00:03:13 is, of course, the laser shooting rounds.
00:03:16 Four series at 10 meters distance.
00:03:18 You have to hit the five targets before moving on.
00:03:21 This is the new format.

00:03:47 I wanted to tell that this is the only competition
00:03:51 that has got riding in the semifinal and final.
00:03:58 We'll come back to it in a moment's time.
00:03:59 We're just going to take a quick look at the ranking round
00:04:01 which, of course, took place yesterday.
00:04:03 And it's been a very, very good day
00:04:05 for the likes of Heidi Morse and Marie Orteza
00:04:08 who've had very, very good scores.
00:04:11 It is a 24 for Morse and a 24 for Marie Orteza.
00:04:17 Elodie Clubel a little bit further back with 23.
00:04:19 But those two French athletes have really, really done well
00:04:22 and they are leading the way in semifinal A.
00:04:25 Sunwoo Kim of Korea is on 22 victories.
00:04:28 But let's take a look at those scores.
00:04:30 Samaraktom and Suden in fourth place.
00:04:32 Yebo Setup in the 80 in fifth place.
00:04:34 Bryson in sixth. Kim in seventh.
00:04:37 Khrunnikova in eighth. And Novotka in ninth.
00:04:39 It's all about getting in that top nine for the semifinals
00:04:43 because, of course, the top 18 athletes will qualify
00:04:45 for Super Saturday's final.
00:04:47 So the likes of Ceterao, Elodie, Oliver, Jong,
00:04:51 Afreza, Medina Gonzalez, Oseo, Domignac and Uds
00:04:55 with work to do if they are to get inside that top nine position.
00:05:01 Sorry to interrupt you then. You were in a bit of a flow
00:05:03 and we jumped into the fencing ranking round results.
00:05:05 So, yeah, I want just to say that we have riding
00:05:09 in the semifinal A and semifinal B in this competition.
00:05:14 And it's the only competition that is very similar
00:05:18 to the Olympic Games, so it's very important
00:05:22 for the athletes to compete in this competition.
00:05:25 Yeah, what's unique about this particular way of doing things
00:05:29 in the World Cup final, as just picking up what Erin was saying there,
00:05:32 is this is the only competition of the year
00:05:34 where we have riding in the semifinals warm-up.
00:05:37 So it's an extra challenge for athletes,
00:05:39 an extra opportunity for mistakes to be made.
00:05:43 So you look at the likes of Marie Orteza and Elodie Cluvel
00:05:47 who have 245 and 240 points respectively,
00:05:50 which is 24 and 23 victories.
00:05:53 But that doesn't mean anything at this stage
00:05:55 because you've got to get through the semifinals,
00:05:57 you've got to get through two rides, there's still a lot that can change
00:05:59 between now and when those medals are handed over on Saturday.
00:06:02 Yeah, this competition really tests the athletes.
00:06:06 And, yes, welcome to Uds.
00:06:12 Yeah, and Uds is the first athlete to make her way
00:06:16 out onto the riding arena here.
00:06:20 She's on course 25, Kera.
00:06:24 And Uds comes into this competition in, you know, decent form.
00:06:29 She had a 14th place finish in Budapest,
00:06:33 which was her best World Cup finish.
00:06:36 So, yeah, she's obviously here at World Cup final,
00:06:38 in 18th place at the moment in semifinal A,
00:06:41 and with a bit of work to do, I think.
00:06:44 Yeah, she's really working very good
00:06:50 and looking forward to seeing her in this riding competition.
00:06:57 Because, you know, riding is quite important.
00:06:59 If you do a great score, you can really make a difference
00:07:03 and going up makes you in a good place.
00:07:08 Any particular parts of this course?
00:07:11 We walked around the course, didn't we?
00:07:13 And you turned into 6th there.
00:07:15 Is that one of the troublesome areas you feel of this course?
00:07:17 Yeah, I think the turn between 5th and 6th is very tricky
00:07:21 because you lose the rhythm of the horse,
00:07:26 but then you have always to have the same rhythm
00:07:30 to make sure that the horse doesn't make any mistake.
00:07:33 Heading towards obstacle 10, and that is fantastic
00:07:36 from Anais Uds of Belgium on horse 25.
00:07:42 That is first athlete, perfect score, 300,
00:07:45 and that is the benchmark for all the athletes to try to replicate.
00:07:49 It's a really, really good start to the riding.
00:07:52 Anais Uds is off to a flyer.
00:07:54 She has a perfect 300.
00:07:58 So up next is Mariana Aceo,
00:08:01 who has been in great form this year.
00:08:04 She was a bronze medalist in Ankara in the World Cup
00:08:09 just a couple of months or so ago,
00:08:13 which was her first ever World Cup medal,
00:08:16 but has not had the ideal start to this competition.
00:08:21 She is down in 17th place.
00:08:37 So the one knockdown for Aceo.
00:08:39 She makes her way now towards this sharp turn out of 5a and b towards 6.
00:08:43 You can see it is a real sharp right-hand turn.
00:08:45 She has nailed that though.
00:08:47 Well done. Over towards 7.
00:08:49 Knocks down 7. So it's two knockdowns for Aceo.
00:08:52 She needed some make-up time, and I think this could prove tricky,
00:08:55 and it's a refusal.
00:08:57 Yeah, and as you can see, she did a mistake in the turn 5 to 6,
00:09:03 and she wasn't very straight.
00:09:05 She was good to put the horse straight in the 7th one,
00:09:09 but not the 7th one.
00:09:11 And when you're not regular with the horse,
00:09:15 then she did a mistake, a refusal in the 8th one.
00:09:20 Yeah. A clean finish to the right.
00:09:23 She managed to keep it going, but that is going to be costly.
00:09:33 2.75 then for Aceo.
00:09:36 So up next in is Natalia Dominyak.
00:10:03 Dominyak was 5th in Cairo in 2022, 11th in the 2021 European Championships,
00:10:09 in 16th place overall as the competition stands.
00:10:14 A little bit of work to do if she is to make her way up into that top 9.

00:10:29 She is very balanced and she looks very comfortable with this horse.

00:10:39 Just, oh no, it's a slight wobble on that 9b and it has come down,
00:10:43 so it's one knockdown over towards 10, and she's cleared that.
00:10:47 So it's a nice ride that from Dominyak, and that'll be a 2.93.

00:10:53 So up next is your Italian team mate, Alexandra Frezza.
00:11:13 Yeah, Alexandra Frezza, she's having a great year and
00:11:17 I want to say well done to her because she's been injured for a couple of years under her foot
00:11:23 and she's coming back great.
00:11:26 She has a couple of decent finishes so far already this season,
00:11:29 a couple of top 10s notably in Sofia just a couple of weeks ago
00:11:34 and in Ankara here in the third World Cup of the season.
00:11:38 So it's two top 10 finishes.
00:11:41 She was of course 2018 European Championships Team Relay silver medalist.
00:11:45 Yeah, was with me.
00:11:46 Was with you?

00:11:48 Yeah.
00:11:49 Oh, and there is a refusal into 5a.
00:11:52 So she's lost quite a bit of time here as well, she's swinging it back round.

00:12:03 You have to point the right pole of the obstacles to get straight.
00:12:08 You did flag that as being a problem area, didn't you?

00:12:12 And it's slow into 6 and there's a second refusal for Frezza, so...
00:12:16 She's struggling in the turn with this horse.
00:12:19 She needs probably to put more left.
00:12:24 And there is the third refusal resulting in the elimination.
00:12:29 So it's our first elimination of the semi-finals, unfortunately,
00:12:34 for Alexandra Frezza on horse 20, Calatay.
00:12:37 Just talk us through what went wrong there.
00:12:39 Was it the horse perhaps not performing or do you think maybe
00:12:44 there's a few mistakes there that Frezza can go away and then...
00:12:46 I think in terms of mistakes it's always half and half.
00:12:50 And of course she wasn't very good with the reins
00:12:57 and in terms of reins and foot that you have to balance the horse.
00:13:02 But I think also the horse was very strong when it needed to turn in the right.
00:13:07 So up next is Andrea Medina Gonzalez.
00:13:13 One of two Spanish athletes qualifying for World Cup Final.
00:13:16 Andrea Medina Gonzalez is in her first full senior season
00:13:21 and is doing very well it has to be said.
00:13:23 She's consistently making semi-finals.
00:13:26 Obviously here in World Cup Final you get straight to semi-finals
00:13:29 but that's a refusal there and Medina Gonzalez is struggling
00:13:32 to get the horse under control here.
00:13:34 So there's 10 off of her scores.
00:13:37 She heads into 3 and then there's a bit of a tricky angle
00:13:42 around that cluster of trees to bring it straight through.
00:13:47 Because they put that 5-6-3 in the middle and the horse is like "what is that?"
00:13:53 So Medina Gonzalez just trying to find her rhythm again.
00:14:01 It's better through... what is it?
00:14:04 Awkward angle into 5A and 5B.
00:14:07 She gets through it and it's going to be that sharp turn
00:14:11 probably the hardest part of the course here towards 6.
00:14:13 She's lost speed going into that corner but comes out well
00:14:17 and clears 6 and now 7.
00:14:19 She's hanging on here.

00:14:24 She needs to follow a little bit more the horse
00:14:28 because she's always a step forward.
00:14:31 Well you have to admire her courage here.
00:14:35 She's kept this ride going, heads towards 10 now.
00:14:38 The final obstacle, pushes the horse through
00:14:41 and clears it.
00:14:42 26 time penalties so it's 36 of a score which means it'll be a 2-6-4.

00:15:19 Was 7th in Cairo earlier this year.

00:16:22 you are panicking a bit and she didn't hear the bell.

00:16:29 So Laura Heredia becomes our second elimination after Alessandro Fresa.
00:16:36 So up next is Mayan Oliver.
00:16:47 4th in World Cup final in 2021.

00:17:09 You know having riding in a semi-final is tricky because it's difficult.

00:17:25 So we've seen that now with 2 that's the second refusal for Oliver.
00:17:30 So there's something tricky about obstacle 2 that's caught out both Heredia and Oliver.
00:17:36 One more refusal and there it is, that is an elimination.
00:17:42 I want to say that obstacle 2 is very close to the exit.
00:17:55 So probably the horse when they see the enter and the exit of course they just want to go out.
00:18:02 Well, so far the only perfect score to pick up on what you were saying a moment ago was
00:18:12 Nath Udzu who got that 300 didn't she?
00:18:14 Yeah, she really can make the difference with 300 points.
00:18:21 So Xuting Zhang on horse 14 Rhapsody is our next athlete to make her way onto this riding course.
00:18:36 Was 15th in Sofia.
00:18:38 Happy to see that she made the obstacle 2. That was tricky.
00:18:44 Yeah, it's good to see that run of obstacle 2s.
00:18:48 Not causing us problems in the ride.
00:18:56 So here we go that tricky turn from 5 to 6.
00:19:09 Caught out a couple of athletes but not Xuting Zhang who is going well here over 7.
00:19:16 Loses a bit of pace towards 8.
00:19:19 Oh and didn't get the line right into 9a and b there.
00:19:26 Yeah, we walked before and all these turns are very close one to each other.

00:19:51 She was quite a good riding. She was balanced with her legs, her hands, the horse was very well balanced.

01:37:39 A time of around ten seconds is pretty good.

01:41:12 Well, you want to be focused now in the shooting because if you are in the top seven
01:41:25 you probably need just to shoot well and save your legs for the final.
01:41:32 Well, that is the element of unpredictability for a laser runner, isn't it?
01:41:37 You've got a good idea of who's going to run, maybe if 10 seconds here or there,
01:41:42 but it's the shooting where significant time is made up or lost.
01:41:47 Time around 10 seconds you'd be happy with, wouldn't you?
01:41:50 Any slower than that and it starts to get a bit worrying, doesn't it?
01:41:53 Yeah, of course. All that you want is to make sure that the shooting is good.
01:41:58 Also to feel comfortable for the final.
01:42:01 And the running course, have you walked the running course?
01:42:05 Not yet, no.
01:42:06 Because you have a small hill which is...
01:42:09 Which goes up towards the back end.
01:42:11 It's one of the most interesting running courses.
01:42:13 I haven't walked it, I haven't run it ever, I haven't walked it this event,
01:42:18 but I have done previous events and I know that what interests me the most about this course
01:42:24 is that it is three different surfaces.
01:42:26 You've got grass on the back of the course, you've got sand in the middle of the course
01:42:30 and then of course you've got a little bit of a running track,
01:42:34 I think it's a bit of clay as well, some of those, it's hard concrete.

01:42:39 Yeah, and you have lots of turns as well.
01:42:41 Lots of turns. What shoes would you wear for running this course?
01:42:44 You wouldn't wear spikes, would you?
01:42:45 No spikes. You've got the hard concrete.
01:42:48 The shoes that now they have the carbon and they're very light shoes.
01:42:53 Yeah, that would be the only shoes that you can wear, because spikes, you can't wear spikes.

01:43:03 All eyes on Nelody Kluvel who dropped out of the top ten in Sofia.

01:45:07 Since then she's amassed 47 World Cup stars, picking up two World Championship silver medals, a bronze.

01:45:25 In terms of her handicap analysis.
01:45:40 Ankara in the previous World Cup started in second place and finished in sixth place.

01:45:50 So she's been dropping back ever since World Cup final last year, which she of course won here in Ankara.
01:45:55 She is a very much a big occasion athlete, often saving her best performance in the World Cup.

01:46:08 She's got to get through to the final first of all. She starts in first place.
01:46:11 And that is a little bit of an in-depth analysis into Nelody Kluvel.

01:47:36 Has won two World Cup gold medals, both of which coming in Sofia in 2021 and 2019, if memory serves correct.

01:47:50 Starts in second place and having a look at her overall performance compared to average.
01:47:59 She is 8% above average in fencing, which is good.
01:48:03 5% above average in swimming and 1% above average in Laser Run.
01:48:07 But Laser Run has got a little bit of room for improvement, you feel, in terms of her ability.
01:48:14 We know how good of an athlete she is. I'm sure she would potentially be able to shoot better.
01:48:19 And let's take a look at her handicap analysis.
01:48:22 In Sofia, starts second, finished sixth.
01:48:24 In Ankara, starts first, finished seventh.
01:48:26 You can see dropping down places consistently.
01:48:30 We'll wait to see how she gets on.
01:48:32 If she's get through to the final, which you would imagine she will at this point of the competition.
01:48:37 But those are the stats and analysis of Marie Orteza.
01:48:44 And the athletes are making their way to the start/finish line.
01:48:51 We're just two minutes away from the start of Laser Run.

01:49:02 And we can see now the athletes are just checking the time of the handicap they have to start.
01:49:08 And it's a very intense moment because you have all the pressure and it's the last competition of the effort, the last effort of the day.

01:49:36 We can see all the athletes walking to the start line.
01:49:52 Last couple of strides before to go, last jumping.
01:50:17 We're just waiting to see what means to see this Laser Run, which is going to be exciting.

01:50:28 It's the Carenza with 51 seconds of gap seconds from Elodie.
01:50:37 And we can see Arceo is only five seconds in the ninth spot.
01:50:50 So just taking a quick look then at the starts list there and you can see all eyes on Mariana Arceo,
01:50:58 who is the only athlete really in with a good chance of breaking into that top ten.
01:51:04 All nine of those athletes will nervously be looking over their shoulder knowing that one of the fastest runners of this semifinal could break into that top ten.

01:51:21 Eva Serrapiniete in fourth place, Sihikim in fifth.
01:51:24 Anais Ouds will be starting in sixth place.

01:51:30 Karenza Bryson in ninth.
01:51:32 Away goes Satero, closely followed out by Serrapiniete.
01:51:37 And it does add an extra element of edginess having such a quick runner.

01:51:44 She will be putting the pressure on those athletes.

01:51:49 It looks like a big lead, but when they start to get to that shooting range, those leads can get chipped away quite quickly.

01:52:04 She's very close to Elodie.
01:52:07 Yeah, it's a French 1-2 at the moment.
01:52:09 Ortiz and Cluvel will know each other well.
01:52:13 So we're waiting to see if Arceo is on the finish line, start/finish line.
01:52:18 I know Arceo is away.
01:52:20 So Arceo is sprinting already.
01:52:23 She knows she's got the pace to close that gap on the athletes further up.
01:52:29 And Bryson has already moved past Xiuting Zhong.
01:52:32 And Arceo is absolutely flying.

01:52:38 She is absolutely flying towards eighth and ninth place.
01:52:43 So those are our leaders.
01:52:46 But Marianna Arceo is really the race that we're intrigued in at the moment.
01:52:50 She is the only one that can break inside that top nine.
01:52:53 She has already closed that gap down to around five or six seconds.
01:52:58 You'll see her coming on your screen in a moment, hopefully.
01:53:03 If we hold this shot, there she is.
01:53:05 So you just saw a glimpse of Marianna Arceo in that gap that she's got.
01:53:09 So there's Bryson. Bryson has moved ahead of Xiuting Zhong.
01:53:13 And any moment now, there she is in the back of the shot, taking a very wide line out of that corner.
01:53:18 And Marianna Arceo is already, you feel, got half a step into this final.
01:53:24 Look at that. It's so fast.
01:53:26 And then there's that big chunk of athletes further back.
01:53:30 But unfortunately, the race is not about them.
01:53:32 It's about those top nine positions.
01:53:35 Arceo, you feel at this point, almost certainly looks like she's going to be putting the pressure on, doesn't she?
01:53:41 Yeah, of course. And I want to say the first part of the course is not easy to run because you have a straight corner.
01:53:47 Sorry to jump in and interrupt you there, but Arceo has already caught up.
01:53:52 Well, we knew it was going to put some pressure on.
01:53:55 We didn't realize it was going to be quite that much.
01:53:58 Right. Let's turn our attention to the shooting range because the two French athletes,
01:54:04 Cluvel and Ortiz are there.
01:54:06 So Ortiz has made her first shot, but Cluvel is missing.
01:54:10 So Ortiz is flying through.
01:54:13 And Cluvel has made, I think, one or two shots.
01:54:17 There you can see in the bottom right of the screen.
01:54:18 So Ortiz with some really good shooting.
01:54:20 But this is once again, slow shooting from Cluvel.
01:54:24 So interesting.
01:54:26 Ellen De Cluvel has now hit the 20 second mark.
01:54:28 She's found a bit of rhythm now.
01:54:30 Four out of five for Cluvel.
01:54:33 Cluvel still struggling with her shooting.
01:54:35 It's a 27 second shoot for Cluvel.
01:54:37 So room for improvement for Cluvel.

01:55:38 I love watching Arceo run.
01:55:40 She really puts so much effort into it.
01:55:43 Bryson's got a lot more pace in the tank should she need it.
01:55:46 Xiong, I think, probably is the slower of the three in terms of running pace.
01:55:50 Yeah, she needs to close that gap again.
01:55:57 And Arceo needs a good shooting series.
01:56:02 She does, doesn't she?
01:56:03 So getting pulled into that battle is a nice ouds.
01:56:07 And you can see Arceo is having to do this the hard way.
01:56:11 She is already closing in on Xiong and Bryson.
01:56:14 Must be fascinating having that much pace.
01:56:19 Yeah, of course, you start the last run with the feeling that you can do it
01:56:25 because you're stronger than the other one in running and you can catch it,
01:56:29 whatever you want.
01:56:31 So Arceo is not as close as she was at this point in the previous lap.
01:56:37 So interestingly, Arceo has dropped back a little bit.
01:56:39 She's having to put maximum pace into this run.
01:56:43 So back at the shooting range is Marie Orteza.
01:56:46 Orteza's shooting slow this time.
01:56:48 10 seconds, two targets hit.
01:56:51 Starting to find a bit of rhythm now.

01:56:55 Cluvel, that's better from Cluvel.

01:57:28 You come from a competition that you haven't shoot well.
01:57:30 Let's take a look at this battle for 7th, 8th and 9th place.
01:57:33 Arceo needs to shoot better if she's to really put pressure on Bryson.
01:57:37 And so on Bryson with a little bit of a stuttered start there.
01:57:39 And Bryson gets away.
01:57:41 Arceo is shooting slow again.
01:57:43 So, well, this battle from Arceo will not end well unless she shoots better.
01:57:51 She's putting so much effort into the running.
01:57:53 You're wondering if that is affecting her shooting.
01:57:55 It's going to be a 28-second shoot for Arceo, who once again has a massive gap to make up.
01:58:02 And she's got to try and get ahead of Anais Ouz now, who's dropped down to 9th place.
01:58:05 Yeah, but you still have two shooting to do.
01:58:09 And we saw now the Belgian girl that just dropped in 9th position from the 6th.
01:58:17 So that is 7th, 8th and 9th place.
01:58:20 Xiong's running very well here.
01:58:22 Ouz has moved back past Bryson.
01:58:24 Bryson, we now had a little bit of a stiffness in her right arm from fencing.
01:58:33 Having to dig deep here.
01:58:35 But she's holding pace.
01:58:37 The gold medalist from Saphir with 7th and 8th place.
01:58:42 And are we going to see Arceo just cracking onto the screen again?

02:01:25 You wouldn't be able to box this lap in pentathlon.
02:01:28 But Marianne Arceo is really closing in on Zhong and moves up into ninth place.
02:01:34 Zhong has felt the pain and has lost the pace.
02:01:38 And Marianne Arceo has moved up into ninth place.
02:01:46 So Marianne Arceo has done it.
02:01:50 And just in a flash like that Zhong just took her foot off the gas and lost that pace.

02:04:12 I think it was, yep, Osetero in second place, Clouvel in third.

02:04:27 Brilliant running from Arsene, she's done superbly there.

02:04:35 Heredia to celebrate coming over the line in ninth place.

02:04:44 And yeah the handicap is capped at a 1 minute 30 start.
02:04:48 But when you look at the start times Heredia was 5 minutes and 43 seconds off the pace.
02:04:55 So she will not be finishing in ninth place.
02:04:58 But she did finish 20 seconds off the lead given that she started a minute 30 off.
02:05:03 Testament to Lara Heredia's incredible laser run abilities.
02:05:06 As she has had better fortunes in the ride she would no doubt be looking down at place in the final.

02:06:58 And Bryson and Jean had faster shoots and were unable to get away.
