00:00:00Yes, welcome and Nihao to Zhengzhou in the east of China for this showpiece event at
00:00:25this breathtaking stadium and in that stadium we will crown the world champions of modern
00:00:30pentathlon 2024. This is the last stop of this unique sports journey on the road to
00:00:37the Paris Olympics. My name is Ian Stringer, I'm your commentator for the next four days.
00:00:42I'm blessed to have Patrick Dogg alongside me. The temperature 39 degrees. It's hot.
00:00:49It's been hot for the last few days. It's humid. The temperature may well register 39.
00:00:55It feels like it's a lot hotter I've got to say. Let's take you through the format
00:00:59then shall we? For the first of our semi-finals it's our female athletes, the top nine qualify.
00:01:04The event is placed over a 90 minute duration. Riding comes into place in the final incidentally.
00:01:12There is no riding in the semi-final so the riding will come into place in the final.
00:01:17Remember top nine qualify from today. We start with the semi-finals of the fencing bonus
00:01:22round. That's the one-on-one bounce. Remember it's a winner stays on kind of format. Trip
00:01:26to the pool here in Zhengzhou. It's a 25 meter pool. 2.30 is the time for our athletes and
00:01:33we conclude with the final placing decided with the thrilling laser run. Five laps of
00:01:39our 600 meter circuit. Four trips to the laser shooting rounds. They don't go in in the first
00:01:46lap. The athletes have got to shoot five targets from 10 meters. They then move on
00:01:51to the rest of the course. As you can see the course winds its way around the Olympic
00:01:55Stadium here in Zhengzhou. The first nine over the finish line confirm their places
00:02:00in the final. It's a new format. It's the Olympic format and the question is who is
00:02:03going to make it to the Super Saturday final? They are the Olympic rankings as of now for
00:02:12our female athletes. Patrick alongside me. Two-time world bronze. Budapest 2019. World
00:02:21Cup in 2021 in Budapest. Two-time Olympian alongside me. Good afternoon. Good afternoon.
00:02:26I'm very happy to be here. We're delighted to have you here. Our viewers can see the
00:02:30Olympic ranking rounds after the World Cup final in Ankara which was again another wonderful
00:02:35event but this Patrick ultimately is it. I know that as an athlete you as we see some
00:02:42of the pictures from the fencing qualifying that took place before today. So the ranking
00:02:52round that you can see. See Elodie Cluvel in your picture there and our female athletes.
00:02:57This ultimately decides the start of the bonus round but also the riding for when the riding
00:03:04takes place in the in the final. So the the athletes who came out on top. Song Min Song
00:03:11with 23 victories in the ranking round. Kate French, Abdul Maksoud. You can see all the
00:03:16way down the listings there. We have 18 of our athletes in semi-final A, 18 in semi-final
00:03:22B. Semi-final A will take place this afternoon but that is the ranking round done. That's
00:03:29the stage for the bonus round. Patrick you're here of course in the in the male category
00:03:37and unfortunately aren't going to play any more of a part but we know you only did it
00:03:42so you could come and join us up here. What's it like competing out here in Zhengzhou? It's
00:03:46amazing. It looks like Olympic Games. It's nearly the same stadium like in Tokyo. It
00:03:53feels great like we have great facilities here. Everything is well organized and it
00:03:59was a good experience. And as our athletes make their way to the stage you can see the
00:04:04first two in the bonus round of the fencing. How's the facilities as well as our athletes
00:04:13get ready for their first 30 second bout? How's the facilities out there? How's it looks
00:04:19to the outside as though it's perfect? Yeah it's amazing. I mean I think it's the best
00:04:23facilities we've ever had for pentathlon competition except maybe the Olympic Games in Rio and
00:04:29in Tokyo where I competed since I do pentathlon and it's pretty pretty long since 20 years
00:04:34I've been in pentathlon. So first up remember this is a one-on-one bout and you score two
00:04:42points as you go through the rest of the field. You can see on your screen Wally and
00:04:50Batashova against each other. The clock will wear down and the victory goes to Batashova.
00:04:59Wally beaten on this particular occasion. If you're on that one I know it's fast and
00:05:04it's quick and it's one one touch Patrick. You can see how Batashova set Wally under
00:05:09pressure and she were pushing her to the end of the piste and then she beautifully
00:05:13touched her in her counter-attack so it was a nice touch. So Batashova with one victory
00:05:21in that particular bout and again if you're new to the sport or you're still integrated
00:05:25into the sport it's kind of a winner stays on kind of format and two points available
00:05:29per athlete as you accumulate them two becomes four becomes six becomes eight and as an athlete
00:05:35when do you start getting excited is it is it when it's six when it's eight in terms
00:05:38of the points or or does it need to be more than that where it's significant. Yeah I mean
00:05:43I always count in swimming seconds like every touch is one swimming second and makes my
00:05:48time on the pool faster so I mean if like two touches three touches then you're getting
00:05:53excited and you are warmed up and you try to push and continue so yeah two touches are
00:05:58is always a good thing. That the voice of Patrick Dogg our expert summarizer this afternoon
00:06:03it's local time 10 to 3 incidentally here in Zhengzhou. So bout number two 30 seconds
00:06:08on the clock. Batashova with one victory. Zhang of Korea with the time advantage as
00:06:17well and the victory oh was that a double touch so they'll go again with 21 seconds
00:06:26on the clock and the victory. You can see Zhang. Batashova had the same strategy she
00:06:37was pushing Zhang till the end of the piece but Zhang she did a beautiful touch in the
00:06:42contra tempo when Batashova moved forward. Yeah so Zhang with the win on that occasion
00:06:49the athlete from South Korea meaning one victory for her and two points and remember the bonus
00:06:57round here in terms of the fencing will take the athletes into the pool and then following
00:07:03the pool will be the all-important laser run that we will bring you all the action
00:07:07of here. And Zhang will try and take that victory the first victory.
00:07:27Domeniak from Poland on the back foot somewhat but Zhang not exactly wanted to come forward
00:07:37herself she seems happiest on the back foot and the counter-attack as the clock runs down
00:07:41halfway 15. The time advantage with Domeniak and the victory goes to Zhang. Seemed on the
00:07:50back foot quite a lot there Patrick but eventually as time ticked down knew she needed to get
00:07:54on the front foot. Yeah I mean in this format the one who comes on the piece has priority
00:08:00the athlete who comes on the piece so that's why Zhang made some pressure she had to make
00:08:03a touch and then she pushed her to the end and yeah at the end she did a nice flash and
00:08:09touched her on the chest. So that's two victories for the Korean. Zhang lovely aerial shot of
00:08:28the piece that you can see under a bit of protection just for the odd downpour here
00:08:33in Jingzhou has been known was yesterday. And Zhang Malaszewska is the next bout. Malaszewska
00:08:44the Polish athlete again a little back foot here has the time advantage as we get down
00:08:49to 15 seconds if it were to go the course. We enter the last 10 Zhang in the last bout
00:08:55got on the front foot and does the same but does not secure the win and Patrick Malaszewska
00:09:02doing well there. Did I know her? Did well just to kind of fend her off keep her at bay
00:09:08and take the advantage. Yeah she took the advantage she did a beautiful stop when the
00:09:14Korean athlete flashed her was the right strategy in this moment and was a nice touch. Must
00:09:21be hot in those uniforms. Yeah it's incredible now there's no air coming through this material
00:09:28there shouldn't come nothing through this material obviously. For obvious reasons yeah we don't want that.
00:09:34Yep so the athletes meet in the middle of the piece. Potapenko the next athlete up.
00:09:46And Potapenko Kazak will take on Malaszewska from Poland with one victory. Potapenko light
00:10:00on her feet that's for sure foot movements very quick but a sword action from doubling
00:10:07her points the Polish athlete takes two wins. It's a nice nice flash with a fin on the down
00:10:12sector and then she touched her on the upper sector beautiful made by Anna Malaszewska. So the feint you
00:10:18see the feint when she came in first. Yeah she came in first down and then she touched her on the top
00:10:22it was good but you can see here perfect. So that's more victories for Malaszewska
00:10:33and again the athletes that you'll see first up in the bonus round here are those who didn't
00:10:39fare the best in the ranking round so it's they who are desperate to to pick up
00:10:46more points as best they can. Uchida from Japan.
00:10:55Next up Misaki Uchida.
00:11:01Malaszewska coming forward a little here with a little more purpose the Japanese athlete again
00:11:08just trying to feel her way into the bout with 10 seconds of it gone.
00:11:14Malaszewska with another victory Patrick. Yeah Malaszewska set the Uchida under pressure
00:11:20because Uchida had the priority and she had to do a move and then Uchida tried to
00:11:24counterattack her Malaszewska with a nice stop hit step back she touched her on the shoulder.
00:11:32Having never fenced myself, I know you're all protected and you're ready and there's
00:11:37protection there but somebody still comes at you with a sword right? So I know you get used to it
00:11:41because you're an athlete and that's fine but you know ultimately it's a combat sport
00:11:46someone's still coming at you with a... do you get used to that? Do you ever get used to that?
00:11:49I mean it's normal for you you don't feel any pain nothing it's just uh if you may be new to
00:11:55the fencing you feel every touch but we are used to it it's not a problem it's not a problem.
00:11:59Zhang from China next up again the um the history of this sport is born out of warriors and
00:12:08shooting, sword fighting, swimming and maybe running away from the enemy when they've been
00:12:13dealt with. The call of valet and Malaszewska has three victories now Zhang of China in her home
00:12:22nation.
00:12:30This one certainly seems in the balance and the victory goes to Zhang who thrust forward with
00:12:37purpose there Patrick to take her first win. Yeah it was uh I don't know if I saw correctly
00:12:41it was also a fend on the lower sector and then she just did a flash was good I mean she's having
00:12:47a french grip it gives her a little bit advantage of length in her arm so she can do the flash and
00:12:55have a like a better timing than Anna Malaszewska. What's the disadvantage of a french grip? You
00:13:00don't have that much power like if you take a parade if you had like try to do something with
00:13:04a blade you don't have the power to hold it you hold your epee it's better with this called it's
00:13:09called pistol grip and that's a disadvantage but I mean at the end of the day you have to touch your
00:13:16opponent and uh this reach is good. Edez the Belgian and Ace Edez onto the piste
00:13:28and they'll be thankful that uh either end of this stadium at the moment there is a little
00:13:31breeze we are thankful for I'm sure they will be down there and away they go can Zhang make it two
00:13:42Edez
00:13:43with her first bout looks tentative dare I say
00:13:55Zhang with the second effective Patrick yes you did a fend up a sector uh Anais she took
00:14:03the parade and she just uh disengaged and touched her on the chest with the flash was beautiful
00:14:09no chance for Anais sadly yeah because I know her very well for a long time okay we're friends
00:14:15I really hope she's doing good here qualifying for the olympics yeah okay because of course the
00:14:20qualification here they've got to get through to the final today and then as uh that's difficult
00:14:26in itself because we've got to remember this is a cream of the crop the best in the world the best
00:14:29athletes in the world Amelie Arceo who we saw in the laser run actually taking part she took part
00:14:37in the laser run championships she's here with her fencing bonus round first bout
00:14:48Arceo of Mexico Zhang with two wins now in this particular event
00:14:58Arceo with quick hands but a slip
00:15:01that will be a concern for the athlete wonderful sporting behavior from Zhang to pick her up
00:15:09that looked like an ankle to me Patrick it doesn't look good I hope she I hope it's just a shock
00:15:14nothing serious she is struggling and as an athlete I can tell you exactly what's going
00:15:22through her head it's not here and now it's the next two hours and it's the next two months
00:15:30is she allowed to have treatment at this stage I take it she's not there mid bout
00:15:34I don't know how the rules are normally you can have a short break she'll take the
00:15:40medical break she'll take the defeat and just try and get some treatment I'd imagine
00:15:44winning here would not be advantage in fact she wins I'll say who gets the touch but how's the ankle
00:15:52that was brave beyond brave as you say
00:15:54it's not looking good he's kind of shaking her leg maybe we should take a break for medical
00:16:01yeah well that's the victory that's the winning touch
00:16:06and so well done to Maria, Maria is just working the ankle and the good news for the athletes here
00:16:16is that they have medical attention as Langria of Germany enters
00:16:19the piece, Patrick's compatriot yes crossed fingers indeed indeed I'm sure
00:16:28as an athlete coming in when you've got somebody injured off of opposite you
00:16:31it's difficult because you've still got to give it everything right yeah for sure there's
00:16:34no mercy and that's the way it is and Maria will be the same yeah for sure the other way
00:16:39around so let's see how this goes here is Arceo and Langria, Arceo working really hard
00:16:45Arceo and Langria, Arceo working really well on that foot in fairness to her deserves tremendous credit
00:16:54and Arceo of Mexico has one victory already in
00:16:57tentative Langria not as aggressive as I expected her to be she might have seen the injury but she
00:17:02gets the touch she gets the win and Arceo doesn't look overly bothered by it and I've got to say
00:17:09Patrick she's walking off relatively relatively well yeah I think maybe it was just a shock yeah
00:17:15first couple seconds and she will be fine for the later on in swimming yeah we will see she has a
00:17:20smile on her face she's walking freely you'll be pleased to hear Maria Arceo but she will get
00:17:25treatment I'm sure if needed all the medical staff here are here to support the athletes and
00:17:33she is out of the bonus round of the fencing and on we move the German
00:17:37Langria wins and takes victory Guzzi Blanca Guzzi next in
00:17:45of the uh the flag on her left arm like a captain's armband isn't it yeah Guzzi of Hungary
00:17:54then with the time advantage if it comes to that but Langria with one win that subtle front foot
00:18:00movement from the German as well don't know what she's gonna do disguising a few moves in there as
00:18:07well and takes the second and that was patience there Patrick yeah was a good touch by Langria
00:18:13was a six on the shoulder of Blanca Guzzi so that's a couple of wins for
00:18:23the German athletes very quick hands you can see there
00:18:27very quick saw an advantage saw an opening I thought yep I'll have that thank you
00:18:33very good very very good
00:18:35so
00:18:44Serapignetti next in
00:18:50and is that two now for Langria I think that's two
00:18:57Serapignetti in for Lithuania and uh Langria you can see growing in confidence in this bonus
00:19:05round with two victories already that noise Patrick is unique and the oh it's a double
00:19:15touch so they will reset that noise is just unique in sport isn't it yeah sound of the blades yeah
00:19:22wonderful the judges watching on as we're down to seven seconds Serapignetti will have the time
00:19:29advantage so with four to go Langria needs to do something and suffers because she had to get on
00:19:34the front foot with two seconds to go and the Lithuanian athlete with a touch in the victory
00:19:38Patrick yeah sadly time was running out and she had to do her move and there was no good situation
00:19:44for her in this case and yeah Serapignetti did her job yeah and Serapignetti knew that the time was
00:19:52running down I wonder when you're in there Patrick and you have the time advantage what stage of the
00:19:5630 seconds do you think I'm going to back off and play the time out I would say like five seconds
00:20:01five seconds depends on where you are on the piste if you press the opponent at the end of
00:20:05the piste and it's five second you slowly move back right in this case and that's what Serapignetti
00:20:10did she knew it's just five seconds and she slowly moved back and then the Rebecca had to come
00:20:16gives you an advantage yeah it did and the Lithuanian Serapignetti took full advantage of that
00:20:22so Prokopenko and Serapignetti Serapignetti with one win Prokopenko
00:20:36kind of little jigging leg style tiny little movements and gets the touch aggressive in
00:20:44its nature there Prokopenko but victory Patrick should be pleased with that aggressive yeah she's
00:20:51like uh one of the oldest athletes of the field she's experienced and
00:20:55she know what she want to do and she does it with everything she can give you know yeah Prokopenko with
00:21:05the uh with the victory so that's Serapignetti kind of missed the parade
00:21:11so Guliash of Hungary next in
00:21:27the pool awaits our athletes this semi-final A a reminder semi-final B will follow
00:21:32the final on super saturday for the women and the men's event a little bit of wardrobe
00:21:39assistance required but this is for safety measures as well so no it's not aesthetic it's uh
00:21:46although this kit is very much needed to keep our athletes safe
00:21:51Guliash in then for Hungary Prokopenko with one victory here
00:21:57wonderful balance from the Hungarian I have to say
00:22:02she's been pushed back in the piece as well Guliash 15 to go
00:22:0515 to go Prokopenko will know that that clock is wearing down so we're down to seven seconds
00:22:14Guliash here just fending and Prokopenko that was two seconds to go Guliash opted with two seconds
00:22:23to go to get on the front foot there I don't understand why she did that but sometimes you're
00:22:27not in the athlete's head maybe she had an idea but look like like kind of unnecessary to go there
00:22:33for that touch because she still had one or one and a half meters to go back in two seconds
00:22:39yeah she opted to try and take the touch but
00:22:45the experience won the day eventually beautiful parade repulse by Prokopenko
00:22:53so Prokopenko remaining in and uh the story of this weekend is plentiful there are so many
00:23:01different stories around but you don't have to look too much further than Egypt to get a story
00:23:06in modern pentathlon so successful as a nation women's and men's
00:23:17Prokopenko then in against Abdul Maksoud Abdul Maksoud
00:23:26of Egypt Prokopenko with a couple of wins here and again wanting to get on the front foot slightly
00:23:32Egyptian athlete just trying to like a boxer saucer out behind a jab and which way is she
00:23:36going to go how to play this one out and it's a double touch so clock reset nine seconds
00:23:43Abdul Maksoud has the time advantage if it goes all the way and will take the win and the points
00:23:49but another double touch Prokopenko knows the time's down to seven seconds
00:23:56it's a five and Abdul Maksoud takes that one and actually a nod of appreciation from Prokopenko
00:24:01there as well Patrick that was a beautiful touch from Abdul Maksoud on the
00:24:06wrist of Prokopenko I know the time was running out Prokopenko had to come and yeah
00:24:14it was nice yeah it was um counterattacking really as well wasn't it on the back foot
00:24:25then forward brilliantly and took the green light
00:24:31so British athletic representation Cape French in onto the beast
00:24:40and Cape French
00:24:45again stories everywhere but the Brits with good representation here over the course of the
00:24:50weekend Abdul Maksoud with one win
00:25:02French did very well in the uh in the ranking having a look down particularly well Abdul Maksoud
00:25:11with the one win and down to 10 seconds and Cape French takes it on the back foot Patrick but
00:25:21that was a nice touch by Cape French it's good to have her back after the Olympics in 2021 she
00:25:27took time off and she didn't really compete and since this season she's back and it's good to
00:25:34have her in the top of the field because you're closely knit communities athletes as well right
00:25:40yes I know her because we are the same age and we know her since we were very young teenagers
00:25:45last year yeah for sure last year plus 15 well with that in mind actually wasn't it wonderful
00:25:53to see the you know the younger age groups as well in the last few days competing you must
00:25:57have enjoyed that you know with the laser run had so many young athletes from I think we had five
00:26:01and six year olds here this weekend yeah that's crazy just competing getting involved in the sport
00:26:07choosing you know laser run and ultimately maybe modern pentathlon long term French then with one
00:26:12victory French and song song who is was the top of this particular semi-final so four points for
00:26:23song if she were to take this one but French looking to get for herself with two wins and
00:26:28song wins it nice contradict by the Korean athlete it's good to win if you win the bonus
00:26:36round you get not two points you get four points yes at the end so it's all because you want to
00:26:40get one bout yeah you only have one bout that's the difference and uh it was good counter-attack
00:26:50yep so we'll um as you can see on the replay he's a Korean again aggressive in nature and quick
00:26:56as well agile athlete
00:27:01left-handed handshake because the weapon is usually in our athletes right hand usually
00:27:07difficult facing a left-hander yeah it's difficult because everything is mirrored
00:27:11makes gives you a lot of problems and you're used to it we don't have that much left-handed
00:27:15uh athletes in fencing so um yeah most of them are right-handed so you're not used to it there
00:27:21are the fencing results for you then there are the points for the athletes coming out to the fencing
00:27:25results that's the um the fencing for you that's coming from the uh the ranking round the
00:27:32the bonus round as well listing all of your athletes a reminder and it'll be a lot more
00:27:36prevalent as we get into the laser run but the top nine qualify let's take a look back
00:27:44at some of the highlights from the first fencing bonus round of the week
00:28:31so fencing fencing bonus round complete for our athletes and now it's the quick change as you can
00:28:46see from that shot there that's the fencing bonus round area and this graphic is geographically
00:28:53very accurate in that the pool is uh is right next door to be honest Patrick could probably
00:28:58throw his swimming kit from the pool to the fencing bonus round it's that close it's
00:29:03very very close indeed our athletes 200 meters freestyle two and a half minutes
00:29:07is the time and you've been in the pool obviously and what's it like as a pool because it's a we
00:29:13should tell our audience it's a temporary pool yeah but it's okay it's not too hot i mean it's
00:29:17a refreshing heat like a refreshing temperature in the pool uh it's good everything they have nice
00:29:24lanes uh could be a little bit deeper maybe because i'm nearly two meters it's uh maybe not
00:29:29deep enough for me but for most of the athletes especially the girls it's it's okay it's pretty
00:29:35nice haven't been in such a because it's a portable pool haven't been in such a nice portable pool
00:29:41and there it is you can see the starting blocks i'm reliably informed are very good as well
00:29:45very important for our athletes to push off on their starting blocks you can see
00:29:50the pool is in the sunshine at this stage and on the weather patrick and i'll have a
00:29:54a brief set the scene with the weather because it looks lovely doesn't it on the tv screens it
00:29:58looks nice and bright and sunny and great but our thermometer at the start of the day i think said 39
00:30:05on my app it said it feels like 42 and if you walk there without shoes it's nearly impossible
00:30:10because everything is so heated up you need sun cream for sure even i do and i'm half african
00:30:19so i'm saying a guy though it's uh it's crazy all the all the egyptians everyone has struggled
00:30:24with the heat and the sun it's really burning on your skin yep so that's going to have an impact
00:30:28for our swimmers as well as our athletes prepare to and indeed enter the uh the swimming pool but
00:30:38they are the lanes it looks beautiful like a mill pond at the moment you just want to
00:30:42jump into it and break the water be the first into it to break that water maybe maybe that's
00:30:47just me but our athletes will get the big arrival walk on as well which uh modern pentathlon is
00:30:56doing a wonderful job on six minutes until we go so we'll uh make sure that we bring you the action
00:31:01as and when here on uipm cv around my name is ian stringer i'm your commentator throughout the
00:31:06weekend here patrick dog german athlete alongside me hasn't qualified for his semi-final disappointed
00:31:14patrick and imagine yes yeah it was a i mean one of the last competition was riding for me
00:31:21i mean i will continue with obstacle and next season but uh yeah i wish i could perform better
00:31:27but i had not my fencing was no good and i had a really struggle with the shooting here
00:31:32obviously the heat and then 30 minutes before the laser run there was a heavy rain yesterday
00:31:38and uh like changed everything from the condition became very humid and i couldn't really deal with
00:31:45it so yeah sadly i'm out so the conditions had a big impact i mean i know you're not an excuses
00:31:50athlete no no i know that it's about me you've owned it and said i didn't qualify yeah but the
00:31:54conditions are really significant yes yes and i think everyone has to everyone has to deal with
00:32:00it and some do it better some not and i didn't but uh like uh yeah the conditions it's brutal i mean
00:32:06everyone who will survive this competition is a world champion in my eyes because crossing the
00:32:11finish line in this heat with this humidity and everything it's horrible yeah well swimming is
00:32:17next up for our athletes we will have three heats of six and uh patrick and i have just been handed
00:32:23the start list and we have the uh the best performances of the athletes in the last 12 months
00:32:29and there is a standout performer to say the least in heat one we'll go through the heats with you
00:32:33a little nearer the time um but the japanese athlete uchida with 207 80 in the last 12 months
00:32:42is certainly the athlete to look out for um but going into the swimming patrick again i'm fascinated
00:32:47from an athlete's point of view mon pentathlon is unique we know it's unique for a million different
00:32:52reasons but for me the some of the unique aspects aren't even replicated by any other sports saving
00:32:59your legs for a laser run in a pool and the balance between the swimming time and your quads
00:33:04and your glutes and using and burning and getting lactic in there that you don't want to live
00:33:09you know rent free for 30 minutes before the laser run how do you how do you do that calculation how
00:33:15do you do it per per lap per as you're you're nearing 100 150 meters you you you step off and
00:33:22you save or do you just have to hope that your training comes back at you no it depends on which
00:33:26heat you are like my normal like strategy is if i'm in heat one i can nearly go all out because
00:33:32i have like 10 minutes plus the 15 minutes after the last heat till the start of the laser run so
00:33:38it's 25 minutes it's okay to recover if you are in heat two and heat three you like not go all out
00:33:46maybe 95 to 90 to save some energy especially in your when your arms are sore you have the
00:33:52lactate you have to shoot later and you have to be precise and if you have like a heavy arm it's
00:33:57nearly impossible so that's why most of the athletes if they're in the last heat or in the
00:34:01second last they just go 90 95 so there is a significant advantage for being in a heat one
00:34:08yeah for sure but you fence not that well before so you have also a handicap coming and you it's
00:34:14not it's better to be in the last heat and fence well than like have a try to be in the first heat
00:34:20at the end of the day yeah understood so our judges and officials are being welcomed onto the
00:34:26pool arena and we will as we course throughout the weekend pay credit to them they do a wonderful job
00:34:35our officials again it's testing conditions for them for the officials here and they are screening
00:34:43themselves from the sun you can see some of the judges head to toe as much as they possibly can
00:34:49in order to protect themselves from the elements patrick turned up in a hat very similar to the one
00:34:54that you see being sported i already bought it here because the sun was crazy and the second day
00:34:59i went to the mall bought this hat yeah preparation yeah very very important very key so there we have
00:35:05it then this is the uh semi-final a heat one for the women's semi-final uchida of japan and you can
00:35:13see the rest of the list uh petrpenko jang dominic vali and bashova our six athletes
00:35:22in the pool a reminder it's a 200 meter the disciplined pool is a 25 meter pool here
00:35:30but again it's uh the work that goes on to put events in on here you know setting the pool up
00:35:39is uh is very very impressive you can see our athletes will not want to be in the sun for any
00:35:43longer than they will need to be uchida of japan
00:35:51he's being welcomed by james zanadakis james normally in this uh in this seat he's here don't
00:35:55you worry for those of you who are familiar with james's voice he's here you can you can hear him
00:36:02welcoming the athletes here he is our master of ceremonies here is our mc
00:36:09bringing the athletes on potapenko can even in just that we've got a tracksuit top it's just
00:36:15going to be it's going to be hot out there they'll want to get in the pool get their tracksuit top off
00:36:21first thing you do after the presentation you open a zipper of the tracksuit and we can see
00:36:25actually the korean national athlete jang has got a towel around her neck that towel will probably
00:36:30have been frozen if not it might have ice in it and the idea there is to try and get as close to
00:36:35the main arteries in your neck and keep your blood flow cold right that's the idea dominiac
00:36:44poland a tall athlete perfect for swimming long levers jessica varley already has the
00:36:54swimming jackets on its way that'll be off nice and quickly
00:36:59farley again as patrick quite rightly says footwear make sure you've got effective footwear
00:37:05you don't want to burn your feet but show that individual neutral athlete
00:37:09in white makes her way to her starting blocks
00:37:16and we'll be ready for heat one here in the pool a reminder of the
00:37:20laser run which will follow the swimming it's the top nine that go through so we'll
00:37:25remind you a little nearer the time and yes first over the line we will make sure that we show you
00:37:29you know the first athletes over the line but ultimately ninth place is the most important
00:37:35place today to qualify for the final and i'll have a bit of a chat with patrick as we near
00:37:41the laser run but are fascinated to know when you ease off when you know ninth is safe
00:37:48first is fifth doesn't matter fifth is seventh doesn't matter doesn't matter
00:37:52no but we'll uh ten and ninth that's what you want as long as you're neither not tenth
00:37:59our athletes giving their marks and away they go this is heat one then of our
00:38:05uh semi-final eight heat one of three and our athletes turning
00:38:17and although although a leader is of relative importance i think potapenko they're
00:38:24out pretty close potapenko lane one though leading we'd expect ushida to lead the way
00:38:30potapenko actually in third position at the moment but ushida's got a significantly quicker
00:38:36best time and is respectfully the better swimmer out there you were thinking lane one patrick
00:38:41yeah i think uh ushida will win this heat but uh but the show is also doing good first 75 meters
00:38:48but uh swimming will be decided on the second half of the race because then it's the time where
00:38:52lactate came and uh arms getting heavy and the athletes decide will i go all out or will i
00:38:58stay on 90 and again as an athlete in there patrick it's against the clock like in terms of
00:39:03the heat and the position in the heat with the utmost respect it doesn't really matter it's
00:39:07against the clock it's against the clock yeah for sure so it's from your own race for your time yeah
00:39:12it's your race make sure you race your race and get the job done
00:39:19and uh you can see
00:39:25legs not particularly pumping when we saw her come out of lane six but that's
00:39:29ushida in lane number one so it's lane one and lane 62 athletes
00:39:37wonderful shot of our athletes under the water
00:39:41may i say patrick you look particularly dashing in the underwater shot yeah it's a great shot
00:39:46though isn't it see the athletes coming through and coming out you can see the turns the technique
00:39:52and how they do their underwater kicks here ushida on lane one she's doing a very consistent good
00:39:59race here but again she'll be wanting at some stage to conserve and preserve those deltoids
00:40:05in her shoulders bicep muscles and forearms and for the record it will be a victory in lane one
00:40:12for ushida lane eight batashova will touch in second and potapenko will touch in third but the
00:40:18winning time 211.68 patrick is probably a relative for ushida a relatively average time for her yeah
00:40:25i mean it's it's still a good time for for the woman and uh but i think she saved some energy
00:40:31for the laser run and what will she do now as we see a replay of that eight what will she do now
00:40:36in terms of getting herself ready for the laser run do you spend any time rehabilitating anything
00:40:42stretching anything or have you just got to stay warm and get prepared and get in i think the first
00:40:46thing you want to do is getting out of the swimsuit and then you turn on your put on your
00:40:51running suit and then you relax take a breath and then you slowly start to move a little bit to get
00:40:57your muscles like smooth and then you start stretching and preparing immediately for the
00:41:03and that is exactly what uh ushida who you just saw in your shot just then and that's the uh the
00:41:09leaderboard uh sorry the swimming touch points at the minute after the swim but that's skewed
00:41:14because we've not had heat two and heat three but for the record there is the uh leaderboard we will
00:41:19discern that a little as it we get our heat two and heat three complete
00:41:26eight
00:41:28next up langreth in one guzzi arceo
00:41:34malyshevska
00:41:37as well as edez and xiang
00:41:42malyshevska did well in the fencing arceo in there after a bit of a twist of her ankle but
00:41:50she looks okay we'll get a good look at how that is off the start blocks to be honest
00:41:54and again we see a little bit of uh cooling technique because it's it's all important
00:42:01if you can keep that core temperature it's all about the core temperature patrick right
00:42:06the the german team we have some cooling vests they're filled with ice cubes and then we can
00:42:10wear them that's what we do between the events to cool our bodies and i think she's having some
00:42:19ice in the towel as well yeah mariana arceo and she does a lovely heart to the camera there's arceo
00:42:33she has one of the best smiles out there for me
00:42:37this will be quite interesting in the race because their times are really close it's just two seconds
00:42:41three seconds and uh you know we are all athletes we all want to be better than the one next to us
00:42:48we will see maybe someone decided to give 90 percent and then they changed their mind during
00:42:53the race okay maybe i will go 95 to 100 yeah i was going to ask you about that it's kind of the
00:42:58ego thing isn't it you know i want to beat you but you know we saw it in some of the younger age
00:43:04groups as our athletes are welcome zhang takes a place towards their marks we saw some of the
00:43:09younger athletes a bit of an experience as well in the um in the semifinals wanting to come first
00:43:14or second yeah it doesn't matter no it doesn't matter yeah you see you see there's the athlete
00:43:19everybody yeah yeah i came first yeah but does it matter yeah well we'll see that in the uh laser on
00:43:25top nine and we'll see if uh first second third do cruise in or indeed whether it's the psychological
00:43:30advantage i finished first in my semi yeah lifts you so the athletes called to their blocks
00:43:44bit of activation work going on for zhang
00:43:53and away they go look at that in unison as well just as patrick suggested looking at the
00:43:58times here they're very similar so i'll be interested to see who pushes out here you
00:44:02can see arceo in your shot there right at the front and in fact it looks like indeed lane three
00:44:10i think i'll say we might just have taken an early lead here patrick it looks like i think
00:44:14rebecca langre also keeps up with her on lane one yeah isn't too far away and i think lane eight
00:44:23zhang is uh putting in a good performance as well like a guzzi in fact in there in in the mix
00:44:31it's uh fascinating to see the different swimmings that look at that shot goodness me
00:44:35beautiful aerial shot you can see here from the olympic stadium here in zhejiang
00:44:41it is as gorgeous a venue as you can possibly see and quite right for
00:44:45the world championships as there's our leader from mexico
00:44:50mariana arceo
00:44:55it's also about like different athletes they split the race different for example i go fast
00:45:01on the first 100 and maybe slow on the second and we have at least they start slow and they
00:45:05speed on the on the second half of the race so we will see how it will behave she can keep that
00:45:12pace or maybe she will slow down mariana is leading the way at this stage
00:45:21and she's a bit of distance between a couple of the athletes behind her does that say that
00:45:26arceo is really going for it here or maybe others are keeping a bit in the tank
00:45:33if we see the split here maybe she's going all out nearly all out
00:45:40her time is worth 216 and she's having now like 73 seconds i think she will maybe do 216 in the school
00:45:49well she hits the final tumble turn in the lead but alongside her
00:45:58this uh looks like he's going to be a very close one two three to be quite honest
00:46:07in it blanca guzzi though beats her to it jack second arceo in third
00:46:11blanca guzzi had a pretty strong finish on the last 50.
00:46:19so the winner blanca guzzi and again it's all about their times janga second back second and
00:46:25a half back mariana arceo so those athletes now have the advantage of getting out ahead of heat
00:46:32three they almost broke the water perfectly together there patrick beautiful shot yeah
00:46:42i mean competing in this venue gives like an extra motivation
00:46:46because it's so beautiful here you want to show your performance here it's crazy it's impressive
00:46:51isn't it but i'm interested in the the athlete perspective that you look around and think this
00:46:56is this is it this is look at this place i think everyone come when they first enter the stadium
00:47:01they're like okay i want to do good here i wanted to show my performance i want to be good in this
00:47:06stadium and want to do my race here the voice of patrick dog our summarizer for this of the
00:47:14semi-final there we go guzzi top of the board at the moment but again we've still got another heat
00:47:18to go third heat in the swimming but that is the leaderboard at the moment our computer system will
00:47:24very quickly after the final heat tell you who's got what lead in the in the laser run which will
00:47:31follow here so this is the last of the heats we will list the athletes for you as they patiently
00:47:39make their way song french abdul masoud prokopenko gulyash and serbanati of lithuania and again
00:47:50patrick having a look at the splits it would seem gulyash i think gulyash will win this heat if she
00:47:57will go all out and uh yeah but the rest pretty close maybe exact pokopenko
00:48:06so we have song minsong of korea first up
00:48:13and these athletes a reminder this is their semi-final they have a final on saturday
00:48:18so they're how you do the balance in cape french of grayburn how you do the balance of
00:48:24i'm gonna be in the top nine i'll preserve something for the final or you can't do that
00:48:28surely no you can't do that i mean everyone wants to be in top nine people pushing from behind the
00:48:34i think you can maybe relax on the last lap if you see okay it's safe but before there's no no space
00:48:40to save some energy and we see that in semi-finals as well don't we with the athletes and we've seen
00:48:45you you know just just the line you're done that's it yeah finished everything left out there yeah
00:48:51everyone is giving 110 percent yeah you've got to you've got to now this is a
00:48:56fascinating approach from gulyash she's gone the whole towel over the head and i don't blame
00:49:03it because that thing your head will take up so much heat especially with the swim cap
00:49:10hair all all in there as well here comes serapinati
00:49:15serapinati is uh t-shirt we'll need to
00:49:23be ready for the swim very very soon but yeah the um i'm also interested in fueling particularly for
00:49:28the men patrick we'll probably get on to that maybe in between the break for the swimming and
00:49:32the and the laser room but the women and of course the men the men on a friday for a saturday how you
00:49:37refuel and get the fuel back in to be ready we'll pick it up probably after the the swimming as a
00:49:42talking point but it's something again that fascinates me with uh with how you manage this
00:49:48and here goes our final heat then you will hear the acknowledgement of the start to get this heat
00:49:52underway they don't hang about and away we go our athletes into their freestyle stroke
00:50:04and we are expecting michelle gulyash in lane five to be taking
00:50:15a lead here
00:50:18in fact song min song in lane number one with a good sprightly start
00:50:25gulyash in second song in third and serapinati leading at the moment patrick
00:50:38i mean she's one of the strongest swimmer in the field uh since years she was always good in
00:50:43swimming it's no surprise that she's also that she can also win this competition and if you see
00:50:51the the whole ranking gulyash she's also one of the strongest laser runner and uh serapinati
00:50:57some sometimes a little struggling with the laser run so gulyash thinks oh maybe i can save some
00:51:01energy here i feel my laser running strong and maybe uh yeah but she will just uh have to go
00:51:07all out here and jeva is indeed doing that serapinati is trying to put in what she can
00:51:13you can see this interesting battle actually they're in lanes next to each other just going
00:51:17back to what patrick said about you know ever the athlete in lanes five and six if they're in
00:51:21lanes one and six they're probably not as bothered about each other but they're in five and six and
00:51:25they can see it but it's for sure at this stage it's um it's a good strong swim by the swimmers
00:51:32on the outside song on lane one's doing well but gulyash leading serapinati in second place and
00:51:39song in third but gulyash is stretching out a little bit of a lead here as well patrick
00:51:44yeah she's attending the lead and uh i think it's because she knows that uh she has to do a good
00:51:53swimming to keep her like position in top nine at the end of the of the day alive like keep that
00:52:02gulyash is going to win this one she's going to win it that's a relative canter as well
00:52:06you'll see a touch to take the win and the finish at the time 210 56 it's a good time song two and
00:52:12a half behind serapinati three and a half behind yeah it's a good time and maybe serapinati save
00:52:19something for the later on don't be so stiff in the arm that's the that's the thing our final
00:52:25athletes come in and it makes that much of a difference when your lactic's building up and
00:52:30you're really going kind of red zoning going hard really hard but that ties you up just that bit
00:52:36much more for the shooting yeah yeah and the lactate is kind of difficult because 10 minutes
00:52:41after the race it really kicks into it and then you have five minutes to the laser on start so you
00:52:47really try to keep it low and be ready what can you do what do you do do you get massage or is
00:52:52there not enough time oh there's no time for massage because to get out of the suit dry your
00:52:57body then get into the track suit and then uh there's no time for much you just move your arms
00:53:03shaking a little bit there is your start and uh gulyash was good from the word go
00:53:11gulyash had the better last 12 month best time it's fair to say on paper and she demonstrated
00:53:19that serapinati of lithuania was close in for a lot of it but i've got to say in the last 50 meters
00:53:25the uh hungarian just exerted her authority i think it's fair to say
00:53:31uh thanks for taking the time to join us by the way on uipm tv wherever you are around the world
00:53:37we very much appreciate the time of the day there we go there's the swimming points and
00:53:44swimming total at this stage then patrick dog how do you think this one plays out
00:53:49i mean everyone is in danger in front because uh there are strong runners coming like from
00:53:56the second half of the field for example malicevska dominiac they're pretty strong
00:54:03the koreans jessica wally she's always dangerous she's now in 18th place but
00:54:08she can run pretty hard so 18th is still within possibility of nine i need i need to see the time
00:54:15there's a gap but i mean here with this heat with the shooting everything can happen in pentathlon
00:54:20let's see a replay of the swimming discipline then shall we
00:54:50so that's this swimming discipline finished for our athletes and a welcome respite from the heat
00:55:14i cannot emphasize enough how uh how significant that that heat and the respite is um patrick i
00:55:21mentioned earlier on about refueling and i as we just moved from the pool so we've just to give you
00:55:28a bit of a preview of our laser on the laps five laps of the 600 meter track they
00:55:34visit the laser shooting range four times four series at 10 meters five hits in order to move
00:55:42out of the range if you time out at 50 seconds you can move on but a 50 second shoot at this elite
00:55:46world championship level is a disaster for our athletes frankly and the first across the line
00:55:52finishes so we start with a handicap start is the important thing to remember here there is a
00:55:58handicap start for our athletes so they will see athlete number one will go off first and then they
00:56:05will ultimately have to hunt them down and chase them down we will bring you the start list
00:56:09imminently you saw a penalty area there on the start line as well that's for
00:56:14any penalties incurred but again at this level you would find it unlikely yeah how do you refuel
00:56:19for the run first of all we'll talk about semi-finals final later what are you getting on
00:56:23board it something quick energy gels bananas yeah some energy gels some some bananas uh you drink
00:56:30most of the time because it's easier to also you have some like some water some neutral like
00:56:36electrolytes and something that stuff that that brings you back and uh this is what you do in this
00:56:4115 minutes yep and shake out your arms yeah yeah a bit of practice in the range go familiarize
00:56:47yourself with your pistol after the the swim yeah the coaches normally go after the swimming
00:56:51immediately with your pistols to the shooting range set everything up for you that you just
00:56:55have to come and start your warming up and what about semi-final to final so for the women that's
00:57:00they get friday and then there's final on saturday men have got friday to saturday how do you make
00:57:05sure you get the right calories in that you need because you'll burn you know your body can hold
00:57:10two and a half thousand you'll burn those yeah yeah you burn a lot and then you go back you you
00:57:14have some like shakes yeah you're using and it's a it's a big task for our physios yeah i can tell
00:57:21you because after every competition they work till late in the night giving massage to everyone
00:57:27like preparing everyone for the next day like uh there we are everyone is very thankful for them
00:57:32yes and they the people always talk as well patrick about the team when there's a team
00:57:37loses a team competes the team travel as a team and that's what you're talking about physios coaches
00:57:41help and assistance that you get from within your families you know your families are part of your
00:57:45team as well right they'll they'll pick you up when you're down and they'll keep you level when
00:57:48you're up yeah yeah that's where you grow together you might mean you spent six months of the year
00:57:53together on camps and competitions and that stuff so yeah our athletes just making sure that
00:58:00everything's in order our athletes will be in spikes for the laser run this time in ankara
00:58:06we saw most of them in carbons yeah carbon the alpha fly yeah shoes like marathon shoes
00:58:12because it was not possible cops part of the the lab was asphalt but here spikes
00:58:18gives you an advantage yes they do and they'll uh they'll help and our athletes just familiarizing
00:58:23themselves reminding themselves some jessica varley under under shade and you can understand why
00:58:29hand sweating as well patrick on the pistol also because the grip is getting hot
00:58:33so will be interesting will be interesting and you can see the reflection in the sunglasses there
00:58:40and the uh the targets somebody give that camera operator a gold star please
00:58:46very impressive well done but you can see the 10 meter 10 meter target
00:58:51we should thank our team as well by the way because we uh we have somebody who's working
00:59:02very hard to get us the stats we're we're high in the uh high in the gods here in the
00:59:06olympic stadium in zhang jiao and uh we are setting up earrings yeah yeah the important
00:59:17things but some of it's superstition as well right you know lucky earrings lucky socks
00:59:22maybe maybe a bit of that in there and you can see a cooling vest that's one of the best so
00:59:25talk us through that patrick yeah it's like it's a cooling vest you put them in the fridge
00:59:29or you have like ice like pockets where you can put ice cubes inside and then it cools you down
00:59:34pretty helpful in this conditions and the idea is of course you've cooled down your
00:59:38core body temperature so the more you can keep your core cool yeah keep your internal organs
00:59:43cool because they're the things that will give up and say uh stop running yeah that's where
00:59:46athletes fall over correct so we have the start list patrick yeah the start list is thus
00:59:54we'll talk you through it in a few members time but ultimately song min song will take a seven
00:59:59second lead um and i know i know which position you've looked at straight away it's right away
01:00:05look to ninth position yes it's the german and then i saw the handicap time of uh 42 seconds
01:00:11and then i immediately went down to 18th position jessica wiley as i said before yes it's
01:00:16one minute and seven so it's just 25 seconds to ninth place in pentathlon this is definitely a
01:00:23doable time so you're so 18 can qualify yeah 18 can qualify but they've got to shoot well if they
01:00:30shoot well if they do their job like as they do normally and jessica wiley she is a good laser
01:00:36runner she was kind of injured at the beginning of the year but now she's back her performances
01:00:40were pretty good the last time so she can definitely qualify so our athletes warming up
01:00:45their eight and a half minutes they have to go uh final preparations and making sure that they
01:00:50have their timing chip so you can see our athletes attaching the timing chips to their left foot
01:00:58and they're just making sure that the chip is in place
01:01:03mariana arceo is going to be an athlete that we focus on because we've got some
01:01:08wonderful graphics here uh patrick that's and we've looked at you with this in mind as well
01:01:12by the way but it shows uh along the bottom you can see their medal um cabinet a trophy cabinet
01:01:18and what mariana has there's a olympic world olympic ranking and senior world ranking in there
01:01:24and she's still very very young you can see her birth date in there but the the fascinating part
01:01:29of this for me is compared to average how they're performing and where they're performing three
01:01:34percent up on her average laser run and three percent up two percent up on swim as well so
01:01:39performing fencing is is compared to average down the middle but performing better in terms of the
01:01:45other disciplines yeah so you can see how they really improved their performance during the
01:01:51season and everyone is on his peak now and you can see as well where mariana has handicapped
01:01:56started and finished and she will she picked up places in bath and lost a place in in cairo but
01:02:04a bit of a bit of a mixed bag to be honest in ankara 18th 18th was a start and finish but
01:02:10you can see our athletes again it's interesting to see uh where they start and finish remember
01:02:16mariana started the laser run world championships there as well she took part in the laser run
01:02:21world championship so she's more than aware of the uh of the conditions and where does she start
01:02:28she starts in eighth patrick yeah she's two seconds safe yeah i mean she's a pretty good
01:02:34laser runner uh i don't know sissy this season i saw her sometimes struggling with the shooting
01:02:39that's maybe also happened in bath but her running is like really fast she's a really really fast
01:02:45runner she struggled with a shooting laser run as well maybe she should just use it for training here
01:02:51and uh i cross fingers for her because i like her and i she deserves to be a top nine
01:02:58yep blanca guzzi will run the rule over blanca's uh stats as well you saw a warming up just then
01:03:04not a lot of warming up needing to be done here gold medals in the cabinet as well for blanca guzzi
01:03:12always nice to have the golds in there patrick no i mean she's a pretty impressive
01:03:17athlete she's sometimes struggling with the fencing but her laser run is always very very
01:03:22impressive so i think she's also kind of big top nine here yeah blanca guzzi then
01:03:29sofia gold and budapest gold for the record uh fencing as you suggested there patrick ten percent
01:03:35down on the average but a laser run eight percent up and a swim three percent up which are the last
01:03:39two disciplines we have here in zhengjiao in this semi-final and then again we get to see
01:03:46her start and finish times and places i beg your pardon and you can see sofia starts seven wins
01:03:52budapest starts seventh wins sofia starts 11th seventh so she picks up places in the laser run
01:03:58yeah she's definitely one one of the athletes everyone is afraid of when they see her in the
01:04:02back and uh yeah i think she will make a good race here if everything went normal will be normal
01:04:08blanca guzzi is in sixth i think i just saw guzzi with unmatching shoes as well did i see or duff
01:04:15my eyes deceive me we will see as we push into the laser run but the running spikes were definitely
01:04:21in there and rainbow of colors it's fair to say as our athletes continue their warm-up some have
01:04:26opted for hats some have the opportunity to have visors sunglasses all round because just looking
01:04:31at the range as well here patrick it is in is in sun for i think all 18 of our athletes yes
01:04:38and the whole rate shooting range is in the sun and uh it would be better for the athletes if
01:04:44shooting range will be on the other other side of the the other half because then it will be in
01:04:49the shadow but everyone has the same condition so it's fair and that's the important thing isn't it
01:04:54that none of the shooting bays are in the shade yeah because that would be a level of uh of
01:04:59disadvantage and this make no mistakes everybody this is high pressure for these athletes this is
01:05:04semi-final top nine go through uh james zanadakis his trackside with an interview for us james
01:05:11well olympic bronze medalist roger kovacs always a pleasure to speak to you especially at this
01:05:16exciting part of the uh competition here we are in the heart of the uh shooting range you've
01:05:22obviously got two athletes you're keeping a keen eye on blanca guzzi and michelle gullash blanca
01:05:27guzzi is in a very good position as is gullash i think these two are going to be comfortably
01:05:31through to the semi-final in this position no i think both for hungry and girls are good and
01:05:36they are good in les aires so i hope they make a final easy but the weather is so hot so easy easy
01:05:44but i i hope they can do so no worries how are your athletes adapting to the heat because listen
01:05:51hungry is not the coldest country in the world but it's definitely not 40 degrees i think they
01:05:54are good they are good in good shape so it's you know it's raining i think they will be good
01:06:00the gap from ninth place down to 12th place is less than 10 seconds at this point in the
01:06:06competition that's not a lot of time this could be a really exciting battle don't you think
01:06:10yeah we will see but i think the hungarian girls are good runners they are the best in the world
01:06:14now so i think it will be good all right well listen best of luck to you best of luck to all
01:06:19our athletes we're looking forward to a good laser run thank you for your time as always
01:06:22olympic bronze medalists roger kovacs thank you for your time thank you thank you thank you well
01:06:26james is on the dacius track side for us and um the hungarian strong in the run it's fair to say
01:06:32patrick yeah the men are strong the women are strong i mean they do something right in running
01:06:37yeah for sure yeah serpen nighty just receiving some coaching instructor that's just having a
01:06:45look at the start list there the handicap list there i think patrick just checking the handicap
01:06:49time i mean you don't want to risk 10 second penalty because you start too early and a little
01:06:55bit of breath work i think there maybe for mariana yeah you like most of the athletes there before the
01:07:01shooting they start praying you know it's you're like please let me shoot good yeah and everything
01:07:07will be fine any help you can get patrick dog any help you can get yeah so this is semi-final a
01:07:14semi-final b incidentally won't be a million miles away from semi-final a will bring you all the
01:07:18action here on uipm and a reminder to make sure that you head over to uipm on instagram and check
01:07:26out some of the pictures by the way are outrageously good so good so yesterday we had a
01:07:32downpour one of our photographers managed to get a reflection of athletes in the puddle and another
01:07:39one uh there's some pictures on there are just out of this world check out uipm on instagram if you're
01:07:44not already following make sure you do check out some of the posts and the stories here we go then
01:07:48this is a start list for the laser run song has a seven second head start over abdullah maksud
01:07:55french in there but what we're looking at is for impartial reasons rebecca langer down there in
01:08:01ninth patrick uh 42 seconds off the start but actually i'll say there's only a second behind
01:08:08ahead i beg your pardon and jang at 43 potapenko at 45 there's nothing in it no there's nothing i
01:08:16think to the first shooting there will come as a pack like between uh seventh place and uh
01:08:2312th place they will be all together after the after the first lap the net first shooting and
01:08:27then there will be the mind game starting you know like uh try to be cool tell me about the
01:08:33mind games like if you go there sometimes you're like okay i will overtake them and be first in the
01:08:38shooting range you try to make a fast first shot to set them under pressure if you have a green
01:08:43light first then that's something like that and because of course you try to do your own race to
01:08:49try to be focused but it's hard to not have an eye on your like on the other athletes you see that
01:08:56part of it i'm fascinated with the discipline trying to stay focused but especially if they're
01:09:00next to you in the next bay yeah yeah if they're next to you and you see it it's in your head so
01:09:05much of this sport is psychological it's clearly very physical these athletes are our supreme
01:09:10athletes but the psychology as well it's fascinating right we have 30 seconds then
01:09:16ladies gentlemen boys and girls until the start of this laser on semi-final remember and it will
01:09:23be repeated a few times and i make no apologies it's the top nine that go through so the leader
01:09:26that will go out first under handicap with a seven second lead is song min-sung of korea who
01:09:33you would expect to go through it only takes a bad trip to the range to change everything
01:09:38i think this semi-final will be decided on the shooting range
01:09:43so off goes our first athlete we will focus on song min-sung as we go throughout the race and
01:09:50a reminder the first lap is without a trip to the shooting range so under handicap our
01:09:56athletes get underway third place athlete cape french is immediately right behind abdul
01:10:01masood fourth athlete out goodyash out i saw a nice embrace between the hungarians as
01:10:13java set up in the it is out from the lithuanian contingent and our athletes start to leave in
01:10:20these this is where it starts to get interesting here patrick because we're talking about sixth
01:10:25seventh eighth ninth and out they go and at the moment we will focus on that athlete
01:10:29in ninth position that is the german athlete rebecca langre but they will have one lap
01:10:35without the pistol and when they head into the shooting range it is that position that
01:10:39currently is ninth with the number nine being chased down by the chinese athlete zhang
01:10:46you can see on twa's position poco banker she's one of the strongest runner
01:10:50and she's already making closing the gap on this group 9 10 and 11
01:10:58you can see her how she's running up the field just in the back of that shot you saw her that's
01:11:06for sure and uh the good news is that that ankle issue for mariana arceo is clearly not a problem
01:11:14she's running freely and running well and that is the focus at the moment is rebecca langre
01:11:20she is in ninth position but the athletes there you go visual gap and just as patrick told us
01:11:26it's potapenko who's already into tenth yes she's uh like really strong and running and
01:11:34i think all this pack will go together on the shooting range and then
01:11:37we will see what happened in the next lap it's going to be fascinating and i can tell you that
01:11:44the uh ninth place is not overly safe in fact just as i suspected it's been taken
01:11:52i mean uh rebecca she's doing her own race uh i talked to her before and she said yeah i have to
01:11:57take care before because of the heat and uh i will not go too fast at the beginning and
01:12:03if you have a solid shooting and you are in position you can uh
01:12:08well you can see at the top of your screen in the top left is our leader that's sungmin song
01:12:12so you don't lose anything you don't miss out on the leader but that is our leader in the range and
01:12:16that the number 12 you can see anastasia prokopenko is our athlete currently in that coveted
01:12:23ninth position but as patrick dog alongside me current athlete olympian quite rightly says
01:12:32it's going to be all about the range first up so into the range they go abdul maqsood out with an
01:12:378.65 which is impressive guliash and french out 10 and 14 respectfully guzzi and serapinaite are
01:12:45in again shooting pretty well they're looking by both might be around 10 seconds potentially
01:12:50serapinaite just missing number five three times now still not out serapinaite out in 17 guzzi
01:12:57still in 16 so serapinaite out in fifth and guzzi out in sixth but in come
01:13:05prokopenko in 15 arceo in 21 so we've got a a shakedown now for the athlete in ninth place
01:13:14because it's arceo who took a little bit of that in the range but immediately patrick
01:13:21prokopenko is going to take that ninth spot straight back you would think arceo's digging
01:13:26in a bit there as you can see prokopenko she's speeding up now and uh i don't know if arceo can
01:13:36well arceo's fighting with her and she's not giving up impressive impressive very impressive
01:13:41in fact you could argue that arceo the mexican has just really given a little bit of a warning
01:13:48sign to prokopenko to say you're not going to cruise away from me all the kind of mind games
01:13:54you have in your head when you're in the shooting range that you oh maybe i'm not that much faster
01:13:59than her in running i have to shoot well so yeah fascinating but we also keep a very keen eye on
01:14:05the athlete wearing number 10 you can see there that's xiang because xiang is in 11th position and
01:14:11arceo in 10th at the moment those two want the number nine position so who can catch the next
01:14:17trip to the range as our leaders head towards the range you'll see in the top of your shot there
01:14:25song winsong is into the range in first and barring a catastrophe in the range which our
01:14:31leader will not have because it's two from two so far she is going to make it into the top nine
01:14:36i'm sure three from three and four from four from song and this is impressive final three targets
01:14:41misses number five but out in 13 and our leader will be happy with that i'm sure and in go the
01:14:46rest of the pack goulash french abdel mahsud for second third and fourth and they are pretty much
01:14:52neck and neck goulash leading by one leading by two now to french and abdel mahsud and goulash i
01:14:58think he's going to come out in the lead here but all eyes on that place that all important ninth place
01:15:07just trying to keep an eye on who's coming into it
01:15:09and we'll have to see in the shakedown who's going to come out in ninth because guzzi is out
01:15:13serpignante out prokopenko in 12 serpignante in 13 there's going to be tight this one
01:15:19arseio still in there and arseio out in 15 also out in 12 is xiang so all eyes arseio is in 8th
01:15:29and arseio out in 15 also out in 12 is xiang so all eyes arseio is in 8th at this stage
01:15:41jang comes out and jang is the athlete the korean wearing number 15 that is ninth so what has
01:15:47happened to prokopenko maybe moved up the field a little bit yeah she moved up the field she's
01:15:54in front in the range so that is 12th position at the moment that's athlete 15 that's huan jang
01:16:02from korea and jang just coming out of the riding arena does have athletes close behind her
01:16:14she's got a lead jang maybe of 10 meters next in is batashova who started 17th yes
01:16:23she did a really strong like two shootings the first two shootings were really strong and she's
01:16:28also like a really solid runner so yeah actually i expected her to be to run up the field but
01:16:38pretty pretty early more early than i expected but this is uh yeah she's definitely one who could be
01:16:43in top nine the maniac is just behind batashova but the important position is jang so in that shot
01:16:49you see there the athlete at the front with about a seven or eight meter lead is our ninth position
01:16:54that's jang into the range for the final time comes song min-seong i think that's her fourth
01:17:00trip to the range final time the third shooting now that's jang so you can see in the main shot
01:17:07there that's jang in ninth position third in and out well done for song 11.19 song min-seong is
01:17:13out gulyash and french are in there as well in second and third in your main screen there that's
01:17:19the battle for ninth that's guangxiang of korea out will come abdul-maqsood and french pretty
01:17:25close i don't actually with a 676 second and third french and abdul-maqsood are close together here
01:17:31guzzi and prokopenko prokopenko still brilliantly here but that's in the middle of your shot there
01:17:37is the battle for ninth and closing in batashova starting in 17th patrick dong is i think that
01:17:43gonna hit the range at the same time as jang yes yes yes i told you the field is very close
01:17:49and in pentathlon everyone everything can happen and i have the feeling not everyone is shooting
01:17:53well maybe because of the weather conditions so if you have a good shooting like batashova does
01:17:59batashova's gonna be out pretty soon 21 for arseo gets out batashova 14 16 for jang that's the fight
01:18:06this is a fight you can see ahead of you that is ninth folks that is ninth position that is
01:18:11batashova and jang jang takes an inside line and takes a lead i think we all know what's happening
01:18:17here it looks like it's going to be a final lap shootout between those two anyone behind them
01:18:22that could potentially catch them i wonder dominia has a pretty strong last lap if she's shooting
01:18:28well on the last shooting she can definitely be a part of this uh ninth place so there's going to
01:18:34be another trip into the range for these athletes so that's the battle for ninth that you can see
01:18:40in front of you batashova in behind jang jang's done well to pull out a little bit of a lead here
01:18:46patrick yeah she's extending a little lead maybe gives her some extra couple seconds on the shooting
01:18:52range it's a smart move in in this position in this position and uh if you have the power you
01:19:00can see here the refreshing area yep the showers they're not running through but tell me why maybe
01:19:05they're no need maybe they have enough power i would definitely take a little shower in that
01:19:10area i hate them when you have them in marathons i run marathons very slowly patrick i know you
01:19:14look at me and think no chance i'm running very slowly i never go through and i hate them because
01:19:18they just disrupt your face your eyes and maybe you got sunglasses on you got sunglasses on you
01:19:22got water all over them how do you shoot maybe that's the point possibly that's the point our
01:19:26leader in then you can see in the top left that song winsong who is our leader and cape french
01:19:32i can see there's some wind going on some of the fences they're moving around there
01:19:37maybe it will infect the shooting now on the last shooting yeah so outcome our athletes uh song is
01:19:43out abdul maksud and french are close but song winsong our leader is out of the range cape
01:19:48french shooting well here as is guzzi guzzi catching french out in the 11.58 world on her
01:19:53and she will go out in second 8.99 for blanca guzzi that's good 12.86 for guliac but this is
01:19:58a battle for ninth brocco penco's done brilliantly in flying up this field but to get your eyes on
01:20:04the korean athlete of 15 which is jang and 17 batashova they know it as well they know it they
01:20:12know this is a place in the final of the world championships up for grab they go in at the same
01:20:16time maria is still in there batashova and jang this is important as to how they shoot and who
01:20:23shoots well batashova has a slight lead but jang does well to catch up to two now jang takes a
01:20:28lead 3-2 and now 4-2, 4-3 this is going to be tight out comes jang batashova needs to hit that
01:20:33final one first time otherwise there's a problem batashova is going to struggle here and eventually
01:20:37in 18-19 here we go here's a fight here's the scrap and arceo i think may have been pushed down
01:20:44into ninth position because she may have been overtaken by jang she has i think arceo is her
01:20:51athlete batashova is her athlete in ninth and behind batashova is jang so jang just behind
01:20:58batashova batashova occupies ninth at the moment
01:21:03batashova with jang close in behind patrick how do you see this one shaking down i think
01:21:08batashova maybe has a stronger finish but i mean you have your home crowd here you are
01:21:14in china you want to show your best and you want to qualify for the final so maybe she has some extra
01:21:19extra um excitement in her well jang is closing here as well i think so that's
01:21:30jang of china and batashova and there is our leader and you can see them cruising in
01:21:37it's just about to jog before our athletes in first second and third and they will cross the
01:21:42line they will cross the line with relative ease the first six are coming to see chang
01:21:46overtaking batashova now yeah chang is taking that position it's a big position
01:21:51it's an important position zhang has put the pedal down as well zhang is pulling away you can see our
01:21:57leaders coming over the line here but i can tell you that zhang is pulling away in that ninth
01:22:01position and i think she's going to secure it here there she is in the front of your shot that's
01:22:05number 10 and jang looks like she's going to make it there's going to be a late sprint is there going
01:22:10to be a sprint are they going to catch zhang i don't think they are jang is going to secure ninth
01:22:14position for china and indeed over the line in ninth comes jang that's the big position the
01:22:21difficult position in tenth is batashova who crosses the line that's heartbreaking she will
01:22:26not make the final but well done to the chinese athlete mingyu zhang over the line to take ninth
01:22:34patrick dong yeah was a very impressive race i didn't expect her with just a strong finish
01:22:41uh that's from china chang and um yeah it was a lot a lot of movements in the field
01:22:48it's crazy yeah and she took it kind of as the 400 meter track is kind of the 200 meter start
01:22:53point didn't she as our athletes put it in to get across the line in this semi-final
01:22:58i mean the the last 300 meter you can just have do you have a big like a big turn like the last
01:23:04300 it's nearly straight you feel it straight and you can just put your head down and start to sprint
01:23:09and yeah she had a stronger finish very strong finish very very strong so we'll give you a
01:23:14classified of our athletes who make it through to the final in the first of our semi-finals
01:23:22athletes have their water in a cooling box incidentally so just been delivered to them
01:23:28now to keep their body temperature cool and rehydrate as quickly as they can
01:23:33but an interested battle for that all-important ninth place and that's the athlete that secured
01:23:40it that's ming yu zhang of china with a real effort getting the water on the back of her neck
01:23:47you are into the world championship final with a hell of a performance and we can see from the
01:23:54warm-ups osseo warming up and being prepared gulyash and the hungarians with the high fives
01:24:01and frankly song min seom didn't look back no no she didn't look back was a start to finish first
01:24:08place uh there was no doubt with this shooting what she showed up here that she can easily make
01:24:14it into the top nine yeah and she did make sure it was secure at as did abdul maqsood as did kate
01:24:20french kind of sad that rebecca didn't made it because uh for me she deserved to be in top nine
01:24:28but the semi-final was hard and the constellation was not the best like a lot of fast runners in the
01:24:34back sometimes it's like that yep and that's the nature of elite sport and this is elite make no
01:24:40mistake semi-finals of the world championships here in jing zhao and the shooting as ever
01:24:44imperative look at them all in the range at the same time all of our athletes uh kind of the second
01:24:51half of the field as it were impressive performance from batashova she was outstanding yeah it was
01:25:00like i mean with this outstanding performance like when you showed when you can show this i
01:25:06think oh maybe she deserved to be in top nine sadly it didn't work at the end but with this
01:25:11laser run and i think it was just the last shooting where she was struggling a little bit
01:25:15which cost her the ninth place
01:25:19impressive though it was that the battle with
01:25:23yang batashova you can see there were some good battles out there
01:25:30some really impressive battles but batashova eventually
01:25:36extended somewhat and uh it all it all hinged really on that final shoot the final trip to
01:25:44the range that our leader song min-sung made light work of quite frankly looked really impressive
01:25:52batashova as well was um probably the uh most impressive of the athletes to in terms of
01:25:59performance yes i will i'm uh i'm looking forward to see the results of the laser run and see what
01:26:05what her running was what the shooting was to see that it's like kind of analyze how the
01:26:11woman's level compared to man's level but this was really impressive you saw the coach for the
01:26:17chinese athlete zhang there on the turn just really encouraging saying this is nine this is
01:26:21your final you got to make it here and that's what all the coaches said on the last lap who is nine
01:26:26how how big is the gap to nine even if you are before nine or after nine like it's uh this is
01:26:31the position everyone is uh looking around because you need to know and and as well at this stage
01:26:37we've got to remember our athletes have been through fencing swimming laser running they're
01:26:40mentally fatigued your brain's ability to to do maths isn't good no you need instruction two
01:26:46seconds you're in night that's all you need yeah that's all three words so there's your qualifying
01:26:50list of your top nine that go into saturday super saturday final song french guzzi are your one two
01:26:57three qualifying in there the the leaders kind of cruised over the line and you can see what
01:27:04places they made up or not it's not particular the seventh play seven places for prokopenko was
01:27:08impressive but again the top six kind of cruised over the line in all fairness to them just trying
01:27:13to relax into it as best they can make sure that they um make sure that they are refreshed and
01:27:20ready to go for their final which is on saturday and there's the athletes who unfortunately
01:27:26didn't make it on this occasion patrick sadly they didn't make it but as you can see also
01:27:32jessica wiley moved up a couple places um at the end he was struggling she was struggling on the
01:27:37shooting range a little bit so uh was that was the reason why she couldn't catch up more and
01:27:43could be part of the game uh battling for ninth place but she also did a good later run yeah and
01:27:50then we'll see what the next thing if i will bring how would you sum up that semi-final patrick
01:27:55of yeah i mean the the athletes who did the best performance there in top nine so i think uh it was
01:28:03a pretty solid and fair semi-final it's been a pleasure and a gift to have you alongside me to
01:28:09have that insight from an athlete it's really important really interesting you know you're down
01:28:13there you've been down there here in jing jang you've experienced the the condition so for now
