Judge Judy didn't realize she was having a mini-stroke until the production crew on her show noticed her slurring her speech while on camera. Hear more about what she has to say about that experience.
Transcript
00:00 One of the joys of doing this show is having the opportunity to talk to some of my favorite celebrity friends
00:05 About important health issues and I can recall when straight-talking judge Judy came on she gives no-nonsense decisions on our TV court show
00:12 She's done it for 25 years, but she shared her health challenges with us
00:15 Judge Judy told us that her whole family never went to the doctor until her mother became ill and that changed how she faces health
00:23 Concerns and it's her story of suffering what is believed to have been a transient ischemic attack
00:28 More commonly known as a mini stroke that could help save your life. If you don't mind tell us the story what happened
00:34 How'd you figure it out?
00:36 Well, I don't think I figured it out. You know, I like you work in front of six cameras and
00:41 the camera people
00:44 Noticed my slurred speech
00:46 so they called the paramedics and certainly by the time I got to the hospital I felt fine and
00:51 They put me on something called plavix
00:55 which I've been on now for two years afraid to get off because who knows and
00:59 Feel terrific
01:04 So I learned from that experience that life is an unknown for me
01:10 I'm not really good and vigilant as I should be about keeping up to date with my
01:15 Medical tests and going for annual checkups and that sort of thing
01:20 Because I think that we all have a DNA program in our body you can change that
01:26 Modify it a little bit if you behave yourself if you exercise every day, which I do three miles a day on the treadmill
01:34 Lightweights, I keep my muscle mass. Keep your posture straight, you know, keep your posture straight. Judge Judy has guns guns
01:41 remain limber
01:44 you know, well you see you've not been a big advocate of getting preventive screening in life, but
01:50 And I don't know if your family does or not, but you've had health health issues. Every family's had those issues
01:55 How do you change your health destiny in your opinion? I mean you lost your mom when she was young
01:59 I thought it was 57 57 and what my father was 71. My mother died from
02:04 misdiagnosed colon cancer
02:07 And she was always healthy. My parents were slim and watch. My father was most vigilant about his diet
02:14 he had a gallbladder condition and he didn't want to have his gallbladder removed in those days because that was a
02:19 Was a big deal. It's a big deal. So when I started to have some signs in my 30s of a similar situation
02:25 He said to me no bacon
02:28 No eggs. No fat. He said if we have a
02:32 Congenital predisposition to gallbladder problems change your diet, which I did when I was in my mid-30s and
02:41 It's been fine, you know, I love that you're pointing out
02:45 I was gonna make a point first of all
02:46 Getting screened as part of what you need to do in life whether you have a genetic risk or not
02:50 And we all know that right judge. We tell them get a colonoscopy. Oh, I do get colonoscopies
02:55 I get them now every five years, but that is the one kind of cancer
03:01 that I know of that you can
03:04 Become completely cancer free if you catch it early enough
03:09 It's just a matter of testing so age 50 all member this or if you got a family history 10 years before that now
03:15 I point these out because when I look at you and I see my future I hope to be like you
03:19 So let me just orient you here. You got the brain up top the hearts down here
03:24 These are the blood vessels that are perfusing the brain with oxygen and nutrients, right?
03:29 Let's look at what happens inside the body during a mini stroke inside this artery right the carotid artery
03:34 It supplies the brain with blood you see all these blood cells flowing around but let's look at the wall of that artery
03:39 She's the wall here is a little fragile area plaque, right?
03:42 And that clot will sometimes boom break off and that plaque will fly all the way up into the brain, right?
03:48 Now that it's broken off it gets up in the brain and it sticks right there
03:51 See that thing now you get a big bruise like someone punched you there, right?
03:55 And that's because the blood is beginning to back up behind the clot and this clot will prevent any part of the brain from getting
04:02 What it means but sometimes the clot breaks away get lucky and that returns blood flow to the brain and then look what happens that
04:07 Dark area suddenly almost miraculously gets back to normal. Oh, it's joy
04:12 All of a sudden everything starts working again, right and you feel much better than you did because your symptoms resolve on their own
04:18 Now this is a mini stroke because it got better on its own
04:22 But I obviously it's a warning because if it didn't get better on its own it would have been a big stroke
04:26 So it's a warning that you might have a bigger stroke in your future
04:29 So you want to prevent this from happening like most chronic diseases the usual applies you want to exercise more?
04:35 You'll drink less alcohol quit smoking, you know all that and I want you also stay away from a very specific diet choice
04:41 Saturated fats if you eat too much of the steak right the bacon cheese butter, right?
04:47 These are packed with saturated fats
04:49 They may raise your body's total cholesterol levels that cause inflammation
04:52 Right and that cholesterol builds up in the arteries like I showed you
04:55 Increasing the risk of something breaking off and causing that ischemic stroke instead eat foods that are unsaturated fats like salmon
05:03 Which you know, I adore avocados nuts olive oils guys
05:06 I'm not torturing you these foods are eat are eaten by the whole planet and it and it's allowed the folks to survive without strokes
05:13 So you might want to give it a shot now. You think you were a loved one is experiencing a stroke
05:17 Remember this acronym, right? It's fast FAST you want to act fast, but what does fast stand for?
05:22 Well F is for face
05:24 You'll get a facial droop when you smile only half your face will actually work because the other half is paralyzed from that little mini
05:30 Stroke you're suffering from your arms will be weak to put your arms up and only one side will go up when you tell the
05:36 Person to raise their arms because they can't move the other side their speech will become slurred
05:40 You won't make the words right because you can't form those words in your mouth
05:44 The muscles aren't working correctly and time is critical, right?
05:48 So go to our website for more information on what I had to identify a stroke and to prevent a stroke and check out judge
