Etihad Stadium, manchester UK

00:00 [VIDEO PLAYBACK]
00:08 - Welcome.
00:10 We will begin now the press conference.
00:11 Please have in mind that we do one question per intervention,
00:14 and that you have to identify yourself with the name
00:16 of the company that you represent.
00:18 [SPEAKING SPANISH]
00:20 [SPEAKING SPANISH]
00:31 - I'm going to need me earphones right now.
00:33 [LAUGHTER]
00:36 Too fast as well.
00:40 [SPEAKING SPANISH]
00:58 - I'm a little bit more nervous for this than the game,
01:00 to be honest.
01:01 Good evening, everyone, for a start.
01:03 But yeah, looking forward to the game more than anything.
01:05 I think, like I've said before, these
01:07 are the games you join a club like Real Madrid for.
01:10 Really excited for the game.
01:13 And yeah, can't wait to just get out and get playing.
01:18 [SPEAKING SPANISH]
01:35 - Well, I think everyone spoke a lot about them.
01:38 They're the treble winners, and rightly so.
01:40 They're an amazing team.
01:41 But I think you've got to understand
01:44 that that's the impression from the outside.
01:46 And that's the kind of feeling from everyone else.
01:49 I'm not a gambler.
01:50 I've never been to the bookies.
01:51 So I don't know the bets and the favorites and things like that.
01:54 But I do know that we're Real Madrid,
01:56 and we're a pretty good team ourselves.
01:58 We've got some brilliant players.
01:59 And yeah, I think that's more kind of external noise.
02:02 And internally, we're confident, and we're
02:05 trusting in the abilities that we've got in the room
02:07 and in the changing room.
02:09 - Hi, Jude.
02:09 Ben Ransom from Sky.
02:11 We saw another one of your teammates
02:13 get racist abuse at the weekend.
02:15 First of all, how is Aurelien?
02:17 Second of all, from your experience,
02:20 do you feel like this is an issue that's getting worse?
02:23 - Oh, yeah.
02:23 It's mad that you say that.
02:25 I didn't even know.
02:26 I think in the games where we go away, in La Liga especially,
02:30 you almost get so used to it that, like I said,
02:33 I wasn't even aware of the incident.
02:35 And I think that's a massive problem in itself.
02:38 More's got to be done, whether it's the punishment
02:40 and how you react to it or how you move proactively
02:43 to this kind of thing.
02:44 I think it's a horrible way for a player
02:48 to have to prepare for a game knowing that they're probably
02:50 going to get racially abused.
02:51 It's disgusting.
02:52 Shouldn't happen.
02:53 The people in power need to do more, especially with Vinny
02:58 in the recent weeks and, well, years, actually.
03:01 I think the blame gets shifted more onto him
03:03 because of maybe his play style and the way
03:05 he likes to express himself.
03:07 And I don't think that's fair.
03:09 The game would miss players like Vinny
03:10 if he decided to take a break because of this kind of thing.
03:15 More needs to be done to support these kind of players.
03:17 And it's sad to hear, because I get to know the lads really well,
03:21 personally, and no one deserves that kind of thing.
03:24 So, yeah, it's definitely a call out
03:26 for the people who are in charge to take control.
03:29 I doubt it will happen.
03:30 And it's going to be something that I
03:32 imagine we will still have to just deal
03:34 with going into games.
03:35 But, yeah, it's kind of one of those things
03:37 where you've just got to play your game
03:39 and hope that the people look after you.
03:41 And they're not doing it well enough at the minute.
03:44 [SPEAKING SPANISH]
03:46 [SPEAKING SPANISH]
03:48 I think, obviously, I started the first half
04:16 of the season really well.
04:17 And even until January, obviously,
04:19 winning the Super Cup and things like that.
04:20 And I think the main thing that probably killed my rhythm
04:23 a little bit was the injury, more so than anything
04:25 against Girona, when you miss so many games
04:28 and you can kind of still feel little bits of pain
04:31 and aren't comfortable doing certain things.
04:33 And finally, I get over that feeling of the pain in my ankle
04:36 and play against Valencia School, what
04:38 I thought was a perfectly good goal, and get suspended.
04:41 But I've said before, I've got to be
04:43 responsible for my actions and that kind of thing.
04:45 But yeah, I think it's definitely affected my rhythm.
04:47 The one thing I had at the start of the season
04:48 was I was playing every game consistently
04:50 and felt like it was very clear what I was doing
04:53 and things like that.
04:54 And then a few times so far, the last couple of months,
04:57 my role's changed slightly.
04:59 And there's been little things that I've had to kind of tweak.
05:01 And it means that maybe I'm doing
05:03 a bit more work for the team, which I absolutely
05:05 don't mind doing.
05:06 But maybe I lose that effectiveness on the pitch.
05:08 And like I said, it's up to me to try and regain that.
05:11 And I'm confident.
05:13 I'm aware there'll be criticism.
05:14 I'm happy to take it on the chin.
05:16 It's all about how you respond.
05:18 And I'll be looking to do that.
05:21 Hi, Jude.
05:21 Paul Hurst from The Times.
05:23 You're moving abroad, and to a new club
05:26 brings its own challenges in terms
05:27 of the pressure of playing on the pitch
05:30 and the changing culture, language, et cetera.
05:33 Obviously, you've hit the ground running at Real.
05:35 How have you adapted?
05:36 And what do you like most about being
05:38 at the club and the city?
05:40 Yeah, well, there's countless things
05:42 I could name about being at the club, to be honest.
05:44 I feel grateful every time I go into training
05:46 I wear that badge on my chest.
05:48 It's an amazing feeling.
05:49 It'll never get old.
05:51 And in terms of being English and playing abroad,
05:54 I was at Dortmund for three years as well.
05:56 I maybe took a bit of a path that's
05:57 a bit unfamiliar with young players in England.
05:59 And yeah, it's different.
06:01 But it means that you learn a lot.
06:03 And I can take a lot going back to the national team
06:05 and things like that.
06:06 But I'm really grateful for the opportunities
06:07 I've been given in European football.
06:09 I think maybe there wouldn't have
06:10 been as accessible in England.
06:12 And I feel like I've made good decisions, thankfully,
06:15 to my parents, my family, the people who are around me.
06:18 So yeah, I think playing abroad is definitely
06:21 a good idea for a lot of young English players.
06:23 And hopefully I'm showing that.
06:25 [SPEAKING SPANISH]
06:30 [SPEAKING SPANISH]
06:32 [SPEAKING SPANISH]
06:34 [SPEAKING SPANISH]
07:03 I think what makes me anxious is if I don't score
07:05 and the team don't win.
07:07 I think while the team's winning and playing well,
07:09 I feel comfortable.
07:10 And I know that my game's more than goals.
07:12 I think if you watch the games, you can see that.
07:15 And it's part of my game to try and add
07:18 a wide range of skills and different assets
07:21 to the team's game.
07:22 Of course, I want to score goals.
07:23 I love scoring goals.
07:24 And especially when you get into the rhythm of it,
07:26 you don't want to stop.
07:27 But I understand that I can affect
07:29 the game in different ways.
07:31 And that's it, really.
07:33 I think I didn't expect to come here and score as many goals
07:35 anyway.
07:35 But now that I'm here, I want to keep taking that responsibility
07:38 and try and score more.
07:39 In terms of having a target, I've never really
07:42 been one for that kind of thing, mate, to be fair.
07:44 I think when I joined, people was asking me all the time.
07:47 And I just said that I want to try and start with one
07:49 and see where that takes me.
07:50 So yeah, I'm up to 20 now.
07:53 And hopefully I can get more before the end of the season.
08:00 [SPEAKING SPANISH]
08:04 Yeah, well, hopefully the team wins.
08:18 That's the first and foremost thing that I'm looking for.
08:22 Everything is second to that.
08:24 The team has to win.
08:25 The team has to play well.
08:26 And if I can contribute to that and add to that,
08:29 then that would be brilliant.
08:30 So yeah, that's the main focus for me.
08:32 I want to try and be effective, have a good impact on the game,
08:38 and work hard, help the team defensively, offensively.
08:41 And yeah, the most important thing
08:43 is that we get through to the next round.
08:44 And it will be difficult. It will be a tough game.
08:46 But we've got to be prepared for that.
08:47 And like I've said just then, we're
08:49 a great team in our own right.
08:51 And I think that we have to show our qualities and be brave.
08:53 And hopefully we can do that.
08:55 Hi, Jude.
08:56 Hi, I'm Jamie Jackson from The Guardian.
08:58 And I know you weren't at Real last season.
09:00 But the team obviously lost 4-0 here
09:02 in the semifinal second leg.
09:05 Can you use that as motivation?
09:06 Does it matter?
09:08 Have you talked about this game at all?
09:09 Yeah, I spoke to some of the lads that played last year
09:12 and how it felt. And they all have similar feelings about it,
09:16 that it wasn't nice.
09:17 I've been on the end of big losses as well,
09:21 and ones that feel painful.
09:22 So you can understand their frustration.
09:25 But I think you have to regulate that emotion when you come
09:28 into the game and understand that it's a new game.
09:29 We don't start 4-0 down, regardless of what anyone thinks.
09:32 It's an even score going into the second leg.
09:35 And like I've said, we've got to be brave and come out to play.
09:39 Yeah, the lads have spoke a little bit about it.
09:41 But I think they're all kind of professional enough
09:43 to let that be the past and be ready to attack the next game.
09:46 Hi, how are you?
09:51 Jude, this is Juanma Sánchez from Radio Nacional.
09:54 You know the Premier League well, Manchester City,
09:57 what's the most dangerous thing about Guardiola's team?
10:00 And you're talking about showing tomorrow
10:01 the qualities of Real Madrid.
10:02 With what weapons can Real Madrid win tomorrow?
10:06 Thank you.
10:07 Well, I think it's the unpredictability of City.
10:12 You know, you try and focus on one player a little bit too much
10:14 and they have 10 others that can cause problems.
10:17 So I think there's no point trying to take them individual
10:19 for individual and seeing what each person can do.
10:23 I think it's about trying to attack as a team
10:25 and defend as a team and working strategically like that.
10:29 Like I've said, we need to be brave.
10:32 We need to come out, be ready to play and play our game.
10:34 And obviously there'll be tweaks based on what they can do as well.
10:37 But it's important that we remember who we are
10:39 and go into the game with the right confidence.
10:42 Hi, Jude. How are you?
10:44 Joel from El Río del Día de Marca.
10:46 You said that two months ago your role in the team has changed.
10:49 I'd like to know if it's because Ancelotti has asked for more
10:52 or is it more of a system change?
10:54 Where exactly are you comfortable playing in Real Madrid?
10:56 What position?
10:57 I think there's been a few changes.
11:01 It's normal, you know, when there's a lot of injuries like we've had this year
11:05 and then you could try and adapt to different opposition.
11:07 It's normal that the coach tries to change the little things.
11:11 And, you know, it's important and it's worked, which is the key thing.
11:14 You know, everything the coach has done this year
11:15 has felt like it's worked really well.
11:18 For me, I've kind of shown that I can play in different positions
11:20 and it's not about really picking one that's my favourite.
11:23 It's about just kind of taking in the information that I need to
11:25 from the staff who are amazing and applying it to the game.
11:28 You know, sometimes there's little things I'll be unfamiliar with
11:31 and it may take me a little bit of time to get used to it.
11:34 But it's about using those experiences like the first leg
11:37 and like other games where I've had to make little changes
11:40 to affect the game as much as possible.
11:42 And that's what I'll try and do tomorrow.
11:44 Hi, Jut, Alberto Pereira from Acero.
11:46 We've been asking a lot about you and your performance and your goals,
11:50 but when you arrived, there was a coach, who is Carlo Ancelotti,
11:53 who has shown a crazy performance, at least when it comes to scoring.
11:56 I don't know if you can tell us about Ancelotti, how you see him,
11:59 and if he's the coach who has been the best at fitting you into the game.
12:02 I think so, yeah.
12:09 I think it would be fair to say that, you know, he's completely...
12:12 I think the sign of a good manager is when he can make you believe
12:15 that you're almost a bit better than maybe you think you were before.
12:19 And I think he fills me with that kind of confidence every day at training
12:22 and in the games, and he gives me the freedom to kind of roam the pitch
12:25 and be as effective as possible.
12:28 Not only that, but he's a top person.
12:30 He makes you feel comfortable.
12:31 Obviously, it's a big move for me coming here with so many massive characters
12:34 and so many big legends.
12:36 And I think he's been amazing in helping me adapt
12:39 and basically making me understand my own kind of potential, if you like.
12:43 It's the first time that I've played maybe as more of a 10.
12:46 I think in Dortmund, I was playing a lot deeper,
12:50 and then Birmingham all over the place.
12:51 So I think, yeah, it's definitely down to him
12:54 why I've kind of had the start that I've had at Madrid this season.
12:56 And I'm really grateful for everything he's done for me so far.
12:59 We're going to do two last questions.
13:01 Últimas dos preguntas.
13:02 Hi, Jude. David McDonald from the Daily Mirror.
13:05 Do you surprise yourself at the speed and ease with which you've adapted to life at Real Madrid
13:09 and the influence you now have in the team?
13:11 Do you think it would probably take maybe a bit longer to settle?
13:15 And with regard to Manchester City, they were obviously one of the teams
13:17 that were interested in signing you,
13:19 most of the clubs in Europe wanted you last summer.
13:21 Was that ever a consideration for you?
13:24 Or was it only one club when you knew Real Madrid were in for you?
13:28 Yeah, there's a couple of questions there.
13:29 I'll try and break it down a little bit.
13:32 Yeah, your last one about the clubs.
13:34 Yeah, I had good kind of chats with loads of clubs, including Dortmund.
13:38 And, you know, my family were brilliant in helping me kind of chew up that information,
13:42 because it's difficult while you're still in the season to kind of take in the information
13:46 and process it and then still have to go and play at a weekend
13:49 or in the Champions League or whatnot.
13:51 So that helped a massive deal with the support from my family.
13:54 But yeah, I had good conversations with other teams.
13:56 I just felt like as soon as Madrid came in, it was a bit of a no-brainer, really.
14:01 The size of the club, the project, the plan going forward,
14:04 the chance to play with such amazing players.
14:07 I kind of just jumped at it, really.
14:09 So, yeah, that's why I made my decision.
14:12 What was the one before? Sorry.
14:14 The one before the Spurs win.
14:16 Oh, right.
14:16 I think that's just down to the team, really.
14:19 The lads, the...
14:22 You know, I can pick out anything.
14:24 You know, it's the staff, it's the guys on a day-to-day that you don't see behind the scenes.
14:28 It's the football staff, it's the manager, it's the teammates.
14:31 It's all those kind of things.
14:32 The fans around the city, they make you feel really comfortable.
14:35 And yeah, like I said, just so grateful for how Madrid, the city,
14:39 and all the staff here and the players have received me.
14:42 Last question.
14:43 Hello, Tachana Montovani, TNT Sports Brasil.
14:46 I wanted to ask about the connection you have since you arrived in Madrid with Vinicius and Rodrigo.
14:52 A lot is expected of the three of you tomorrow in the game.
14:56 I wanted you to tell me a bit about your relationship with them on and off the pitch.
15:00 Thank you.
15:01 I think, in general, we have a great relationship with all the lads,
15:08 whether it be the senior lads or the young guys.
15:10 But obviously, Vinicius and Rodrigo, I play with closely on the pitch.
15:13 And I think when everything clicks, it's something that's kind of beautiful to play.
15:17 And there's been a few games where we felt like we were all kind of at our best.
15:21 And it's just beautiful to play with players like that, to be honest.
15:24 They make the job so much easier.
15:26 They have so much quality, so humble, so kind of honest working lads as well, which really helps.
15:31 And yeah, hopefully we'll continue to play well and score goals and win games for many more years.
15:36 It's a great environment in the team at the minute,
15:39 and hopefully we can take it into tomorrow.
15:41 - Thank you. - Thank you very much.
15:42 Have a good night, guys.
15:44 Take care, Vonky.
15:51 Bye.

22:48 (SPEAKS SPANISH)
22:51 Hello. In English, please.
23:12 Jude, when he was in here, said that a good coach
23:16 makes players believe they are better than they believe they are,
23:19 and he says you've done that with him.
23:22 You've worked with so many great players over the years.
23:25 How good is Bellingham, and how good could he be?
23:30 Bellingham is really good, because I think he's a modern player
23:40 with a lot of quality, technically, with a lot of strong physicality,
23:45 and a modern, difficult to say, midfielder,
23:50 but he can cover a lot of space for his physicality,
23:55 and he's doing really well.
23:57 He will be, for the future of Real Madrid,
24:00 one of the most important players, also because he's only 20 years old,
24:05 and sometimes we forget this, that he's 20 years old.
24:09 He's really mature, really professional, a fantastic player for us.
