00:04Are you good?
00:06How's it?
00:07Good?
00:09Staying out of trouble.
00:30Cameras, are we good to go?
00:32All good here?
00:34All right.
00:35Guys, we have our assistant coach, Mr. Ryan Tandushkadeh.
00:38As usual, you take one person at a time.
00:40Who wants to go first?
00:44Ryan, how confident are we for tomorrow first?
00:48And the second thing is, what were the main points of discussion when the batters were
00:52coming out after dismissal?
00:54Is there some more challenging on the wicket or the bowlers, what specifically they were
00:58doing, what kind of a conversation you guys were having?
01:01And firstly, are you happy with the score, especially knowing that the ball was almost
01:07throughout the day doing something?
01:09Yeah, I think that score is a pretty fair day.
01:12It was challenging for the batting group with the starting and stopping.
01:17You know, I think the fact that the partnerships are all sort of 20, 30, 40, 20, 30 is indicative
01:23of the surface.
01:24There's a lot of good balls out there.
01:26And if we can push that closer to 300, we think that's a very good score.
01:29I mean, obviously with the rain breaks, the messaging is about switching back on, which
01:34is difficult to do.
01:35And you almost got to start again every time.
01:37But I thought the guys did, by and large, did very well today.
01:42What's the messaging to the players coming on off the field?
01:45What were they talking about?
01:47Yeah, look, the wicket obviously started a bit slow.
01:50But the main thing is, you know, to mentally be able to switch back on as soon as you go
01:56back out there.
01:57The stop starts are disruptive for the batters.
01:58You're obviously trying to get some rhythm.
02:00But, you know, we knew they would come hard in that first session.
02:05And with the rain, they get to start again, so to speak.
02:08And they're pretty fresh.
02:09So it's just switching on.
02:10Actually, I thought Sai played really nicely.
02:12There's obviously two really good balls in that last spell from Josh Tung.
02:17But yeah, we're pretty happy with 205 for six, whatever it is.
02:21Coach, the captain has said yesterday that a call on Bumrah's participation in the game
02:25would be taken before Toss seeing the conditions.
02:28Considering what was Green top today, what was the chat and why didn't he play?
02:34I think it's quite a complex issue around Bumrah.
02:37You know, we obviously want to wheel him out.
02:40We also want to respect where his body's at.
02:43And on the basis of that, we just felt that it wasn't worth including him in the squad.
02:48You know, he has bowled a large number of overs.
02:51I know it doesn't always seem like that because he's only played three tests
02:54and he only bowled in one innings in Manchester.
02:56But if you look at the loads, he's bowled a lot of overs.
03:00And like he did say coming into the tour, he was going to be available for three games.
03:04And we just felt it was right to honour that call.
03:09Coach, you always maintained that Karun always looked in good rhythm and people backed him.
03:14But given the stage of his career where he is, how important is this knock?
03:18And what kind of conversation did you have after Manchester, especially when Rishabh was not available?
03:25Because that number five was very important.
03:27Yeah, look, Karun's been asked to do a tough job on the tour.
03:30You know, start off at six in the first test and then batted at three for the other two tests.
03:34And I always said and we always thought that his tempo and his rhythm was very good.
03:39He's a quality player, particularly for that reason, that he can absorb the pressure.
03:43So going in today at a different position again, I thought he summed up the conditions really well.
03:47Look, when someone comes back into the test side like he does after a lengthy absence, the pressure is always there.
03:53And I think he's handled that very well.
03:55But you could probably say the same about someone like Dhruv.
03:57And I think when you're representing a country like India, you don't expect it easy.
04:01And the guys are attuned to going then, dealing with the pressure.
04:04And hats off to Karun.
04:05I think he's had a really good tour without blowing the lights out.
04:09But he's given himself a chance now tomorrow to get a big, meaningful score for the team.
04:14Yeah, just an extension of the last question.
04:17Basically, Subman was in one of the previous press conferences.
04:20He said that in the first test match, Karun did not bat at his probably preferred position.
04:25And then again, we have seen him bat twice at number three.
04:29Again, he's batting at number five.
04:31So how difficult it is for someone, like you said, that he's coming back into test cricket
04:36after a long time and under these difficult circumstances.
04:40How tough do you think is it for a player also mentally, technically also?
04:44How to adjust to different conditions according to the flexibility of the team?
04:49It's not ideal.
04:50And you can see we're always trying to put the guys in their most favourite position.
04:55But with the batting unit we've brought on tour, sometimes you have to make adjustments.
05:02I'd say today probably suited him quite well given the conditions.
05:04You know, walking in when he did, it's not too dissimilar to what a three or four,
05:09which is his preferred position, would walk into.
05:12And I think it's a feather in his cap that he is so versatile.
05:16Personally, I thought six was a big ask.
05:18You know, six is very different to five, four, three.
05:20And given the way that we could play it and how early he got to the crease today,
05:23I think it actually suited him nicely.
05:25But he's never complained.
05:27You know, the messaging is always the same.
05:28It's the team that comes first.
05:30What job can you do for the team?
05:31And he just cracks on with it.
05:32And like everyone else, he just wants to give his best and play as much test cricket as he can.
05:36Ryan, how frustrating is it that your in-form batter, who is also the captain of the team,
05:42gets himself in and then runs himself out in conditions such as these?
05:48I'm assuming not as frustrating as it is for him.
05:51You know, he's in the touch of his life again today.
05:53He made batting look really easy for the 40 minutes or whatever he was out there.
05:58But you know, these mistakes do happen.
06:00England actually bowled nicely in that little spell.
06:02And, you know, one of the things we did speak about in the breaks is how well we were accumulating
06:07because it didn't look easy to hit boundaries then.
06:09I thought all the batters today accumulated really well around the stumps.
06:13I guess it's getting that balance right of, you know, trying to keep the pressure on the bowlers
06:16and the fielders and taking the runs where you can.
06:19But that's a misjudgment of a run.
06:21And I think given what he's done in the first four tests, we'll let him get away with that one.
06:26Ryan, just for the conditions, from the outside, it seems like this already could be
06:32a good score.
06:33But you'll be better equipped to tell us because you would know what to expect from this pitch
06:38tomorrow and day after.
06:40Do you, like, is the moment expected to die down anytime soon?
06:44Which might not make it look as good as it seems to me right now.
06:48And the other thing is, just as a batter facing somebody like Josh Tung, who can kind of spray the ball around
06:54and then come on, come with balls that are bordering on the unplayable.
06:59Is his bowl four or five such balls in the series?
07:02How's that to face?
07:04Yeah, look, I think when you set out for a tour of England, you expect conditions closer to this
07:10than what we've seen in the first four tests.
07:12How do I think conditions will play out over the next four days?
07:15I think it's got a lot to do with the overhead conditions.
07:17If it stays cloudy, I think the ball will continue to do what it's done.
07:21I think the bowlers' landings were quite tricky today as well.
07:25I thought all the England bowlers struggled with that and that's maybe why you saw some inconsistency.
07:30But it actually makes it very challenging when someone bowls like Josh did today.
07:34He's a very good bowler when you don't know what's coming down as a batter and he's bowled.
07:39A couple of absolute jaffers in there and got two big wickets.
07:43It does make it tough.
07:45But for us, hopefully it stays the same.
07:47I think if you get the ball in the right area and like I said about the partnerships,
07:50you never feel like you're in there.
07:52There's always a good ball around the corner.
07:54And I don't think it's going to go absolutely flat.
07:56I don't think there's going to be a massive change in conditions.
07:59But hopefully it stays as close as it was today.
08:04Ryan, you were just talking about the complex case of Boombra.
08:07Now when your lead pacer makes himself available only for three test matches in a series
08:11and now with the conditions pretty much the best for a bowler.
08:15So for a think tank, how hard is it to like, you know, you have your best bowler,
08:19you can only play three matches and then how you go about managing all the difficulty for the team management?
08:25Yeah, every time I've answered this question, I've spoken about like putting the pieces of the puzzles together
08:30and guys were baffled when we didn't play him in the second test, the third test, sorry.
08:35And our thinking here was that the oval, yes, it's got bounce, but it's normally a fairly good wicket for batting on.
08:43And we thought we'd roll the dice in Manchester.
08:45Well, obviously, if we'd won the toss, we would have bowled.
08:47In hindsight, you would have loved to have him here.
08:51But you would also have said if we come here 3-1 down that we didn't use him there.
08:54So it's trying to, not guess, but trying to look into the future and then try to see how we can manage him.
09:01And maybe, you know, maybe England have got it spot on leaving the best bowling wicket for the last test after he's played three.
09:09Just an extension of that, how do you manage the poses around him?
09:16Now, Prasit Krishna misses a game, he comes back into D11.
09:19Arshadip and Kuldeep won the bench for five tests.
09:22Abhiwani Vishwaran remains on the bench for ten tests.
09:24How do you manage that in the dressing room when the players are consistently not playing
09:28and there's a player who is picking and choosing games and others around have to fall in line?
09:32So how tricky is that a situation to deal with?
09:36Look, I don't think picking and choosing is a fair comment to Booms.
09:40You know, he did say he was going to play three games.
09:42He left it up to us which three he played.
09:44We've tried to manage the situation.
09:46It's not ideal.
09:47I guess giving those guys attention, the guys who aren't playing, particularly when you're carrying 18, is important.
09:53You know, make them know that you're making all the decisions in good faith in the best interest of the team.
09:59And just on that, all the guys who haven't played, they've been fantastic.
10:03They've trained the house down.
10:05They're disappointed when they get left out, but they don't let it show when they're around the group.
10:08And that's very important to creating a good culture for the guys who are playing to perform it.
