00:00Welcome to WatchMojo, and today we're counting down our picks for the most testosterone-laden
00:11scenes to ever grace the silver screen.
00:1810.
00:21Lumberjacking β Commando It's difficult to know for sure exactly
00:27how serious director Markel Lester and crew were feeling when they filmed this introduction
00:33for 1985's Commando.
00:42The camera makes absolutely no bones about lingering upon all of Arnold Schwarzenegger's
00:47bulging muscles as it introduces the latter's character, John Matrix.
00:52Oh, and there's also the fact that Arnold as Matrix just happens to be lugging a friggin
00:59tree around like it's nothing, you know, as you do.
01:08Elsewhere, these masculine moments are intercut with impossibly feel-good footage of Schwarzenegger
01:16and co-star Alyssa Milano eating food and piling around with a deer.
01:22It's amazing stuff.
01:269.
01:30Are You Not Entertained β Gladiator A gladiatorial battle to the death is what
01:36we have here with our next pick, as Maximus Decimus Meridius slays his opponents.
01:46Russell Crowe's star was already on the rise when he took the lead role in Gladiator,
01:52but it was this performance that helped put him over the top.
01:55The combat sequences are well-actualized and shot with an intense personal viciousness.
02:00Meanwhile, Crowe plays up to his increasing popularity with the crowd, asking them, with
02:09a look that speaks to Meridius' disgust with the entire affair.
02:13It's a nice mixture of character beats and physicality that helps make this scene succeed.
02:248.
02:29Pain Don't Hurt β Roadhouse We all miss Patrick Swayze.
02:34The man was an underrated performer with plenty of range, able to switch easily between moments
02:39of tenderness and hyper-masculinity.
02:46This scene from Roadhouse is a great example of that, as a wounded James Dalton is being
02:51read as proverbial rights by an attending physician, Doc Clay.
02:59The doctor rattles off all of the cooler's various injuries over the years, while Dalton
03:05is receiving staples for his wound.
03:07He declines anesthesia during the procedure, telling Clay that, sure, Dalton flinches a
03:13bit when the staple gun is used, but Swayze's hair remains impeccable through it all.
03:19And that smile is still worth a million bucks.
03:237.
03:24Do You Smoke β Lethal Weapon Gary Busey provides legitimate menace and
03:30unpredictability in his portrayal of lethal weapon antagonist, Mr. Joshua.
03:35This is seen right from his character's introduction, thanks to a very memorable interaction
03:40with a cigarette lighter.
03:41The movie's main heavy, General McAllister, is attempting to prove exactly how loyal Joshua
03:47is.
03:53McAllister holds an open flame to Joshua's arm, and the latter almost seems to enjoy
03:58the pain that's being inflicted on him, all to prove a point.
04:07The scene helps send a message that this group of ex-military men and mercenaries mean business.
04:146.
04:16All Out Of Bubblegum β They Live Some of the best movie moments in the world
04:26have been the result of ad-libs, including this scene from 1988's They Live.
04:32Rowdy Roddy Piper was already used to improvising dialogue, thanks to his history as a professional
04:37wrestler.
04:43As a result, Piper turned on the charm when it came to this scene, where his character
04:47of Nada enters a bank.
04:49Nada is wearing the special sunglasses that enable him to see how an alien race has infiltrated
04:55nearly every aspect of human life.
04:58Oh, and he's also armed, and intends to do something about that infiltration.
05:03That something involves kicking butt, and lots of it.
05:07But not before he utters one iconic line.
05:185.
05:23James Bond β Dr. No What's the best way to properly introduce
05:28a character?
05:29It's a difficult question with many different answers, depending on the style of film.
05:34James Bond's world of spies, intrigue, sex, and danger acquired a truly iconic opening,
05:40with an actor able to communicate that world on screen.
05:47Sean Connery embodies all of this, and more, with a laconic performance that's smooth,
05:53suave, and debonair.
05:57The cigarette dangling from Bond's lip is almost a character unto itself, and Connery
06:03introduces the world to Sir Ian Fleming's super-spy.
06:10It's a scene that would set the template for countless imitators, as well as solidifying
06:15Connery as the perfect secret agent.
06:194.
06:20This Is Sparta β 300 Zack Snyder's 300 is chock-full of memorably
06:26masculine dialogue, such as that particularly memorable line about fighting in the shade.
06:44However, Snyder's film is probably most associated with this speech from lead Gerard
06:49Butler.
06:50Sparta has been visited by an emissary from King Xerxes of Persia, one who seems to feel
06:55no fear of Butler's character, King Leonidas.
07:06The messenger is in for a rude awakening, however, when his insults, threats, and requests
07:11for earth and water in tribute are met with defiance.
07:25Leonidas boots the Persian into the pit, effectively setting the stage for all of the action to
07:31come.
07:323.
07:34Rocky & Apollo Celebrates β Rocky 3 The Rocky franchise is somewhat synonymous
07:41with training montages.
07:43Rocky 4 had a great one that was set to no easy way out by Robert Tepper.
07:54Yet there's just something about the relationship between Rocky Balboa and Apollo Creed that
07:59makes this montage from Rocky 3 feel special.
08:03For starters, we love seeing these old opponents team up as Apollo assists Rocky in regaining
08:08the eye of the tiger.
08:10The challenge of a rematch with Clubber Lang looms large, and the pair's training is
08:15intense and seems to be working.
08:17Rocky's progress is measured primarily against his ability to outrun Creed on the beach,
08:23which he finally does.
08:33The pair's embrace in the water shortly thereafter makes us raise our fists and yell
08:38every time.
08:422.
08:46Tough Guy Dialogue β Heartbreak Ridge Let's be real, we could have populated this
08:51entire list with scenes taken solely from the filmography of Clint Eastwood.
08:57Films like Gran Torino, Dirty Harry, and A Fistful of Dollars all proved Eastwood's
09:02mettle as a cinematic tough guy.
09:04For our money, however, there's just something special about the poetry Eastwood's character
09:09of Tom Highway spouts off in Heartbreak Ridge.
09:18We're specifically referencing a scene where Highway is interrupted by a tough guy while
09:23he's trying to tell old war stories in jail.
09:33Not only does Eastwood beat the life out of his would-be assailant, but he does so
09:37while spouting off one-liners with ease.
09:44Before we unveil our top pick, here are a few honorable mentions.
09:48Shopping Wood β Avengers Age of Ultron Cap doing it the old-fashioned way
10:01Stingray licks the blade Undefeatable β One epic final showdown
10:14Cauterizing the Wound β Rambo 3 Ouch I'm Your Huckleberry β Tombstone
10:26A Farewell for Johnny Ringo

11:01Hard Handshake β Predator There are few films as testosterone-laden
11:06as 1987's Predator.
11:08There are lots of memorable moments to underline this fact too, such as star Arnold Schwarzenegger's
11:15impassioned battle cry near the film's climax.
11:22However, we'd be remiss in not mentioning what just has to be the hardest handshake
11:34in the history of cinema.
11:35This reunion between Arnold Schwarzenegger's Dutch and Carl Weather's Dillon is solidified
11:41with a hand clasp that soon turns into an arm-wrestling match.
11:49The sweat glistens and biceps flex as Dutch admonishes Dillon for pushing too many pencils.
12:01It's a contest of machismo, sure, but in the best possible way.
12:05A way that emphasises just how much we love this stuff.
12:13What's the best era for tough guy cinema?
