00:00 The man set to be Senegal's next president, just weeks after having been released from prison,
00:03 has addressed his country for the first time. Basarou Diamay Faye, whose victory in Sunday's
00:08 vote sets him up to become the continent's youngest elected head of state, has vowed
00:12 to tackle corruption and revamp the economy. Sam Bradpiece brings us more from Dakar.
00:17 In the years leading up to Senegal's presidential election, the country went through an unprecedented
00:25 period of political unrest. More than 60 people were killed in and around protests, hundreds of
00:32 political opponents were thrown in jail, and the freedom of the press was seriously impinged.
00:38 In his first address to the nation since winning what looks like an absolute majority at the polls,
00:44 Basarou Diamay Faye, the country's new president-elect, thanked his supporters for their struggle.
00:53 "While I regret the pain and suffering of recent years,
00:56 the lives that have been shattered and those that have been lost,
01:00 I would like to acknowledge and salute our people's attachment to democracy, justice and equality."
01:09 While his critics say that Basarou Diamay Faye is too young, too inexperienced to hold high office,
01:17 the majority of the Senegalese electorate disagrees. He won support with a radical
01:23 program which involves pulling Senegal out of the CFA franc currency, boosting local production,
01:29 and renegotiating contracts with international oil and gas companies.
